This month we are focusing on medical neglect in COG-TFI, beginning with excerpts from "Faith and Healing", the first of many publications by cult founder David Berg on whether to seek medical attention for health issues including childbirth emergencies.

Written early in the cult’s development, this 1970 publication laid out Berg's stance on doctors, medicine, and medical interventions, and set the tone for the cult’s attitude toward members seeking medical assistance. Berg made it clear that consulting doctors and receiving medical care demonstrated a lack of faith in God, and those who did so were subject to a withdrawal of God’s blessings both now and in the afterlife. Berg further stated that if members had genuine faith they should be willing to "literally die" rather than betray their faith by turning to doctors or hospitals and expressed that those unwilling to do so should leave the group.

This stance had devastating consequences for members of all ages in need of medical care, as the cult's immense pressure upon members not to seek help from doctors and hospitals even applied to medical emergencies, leading to preventable pain, long term health problems, disabilities, and even deaths.
