For a Shounen jump series I feel like World Trigger has flown completely under the radar of my focus for years.
I didn’t even realise it was a shounen jump series until I tried reading it after binging the show.
But it’s so good?? The plot makes sense. Osamu is probably one of the more normal shounen protagonists. Everyone is friends. Yet there is no power of friendship. There is no magic training arc to cure all their problems. It’s also kinda dark if you dwell on the threat of the neighbours. However the children are safe and not forced to live this lifestyle?? Honestly that’s the most shocking part to me. Lots of action series tend to overlook the toll fighting on the frontlines takes on the youth.
The world building is amazing! It’s so detailed and immersive. The concept of triggers and Trion is really cool.
Also I find it fascinating how the border agents are all so interconnected and chill with each other. It’s especially evident the higher the rank. I mean there are some abrasive personalities but no one is outright a bully.
The squads are also so interesting. I love their dynamics. You can tell these squads are formed organically and WANT to work with each other. Plus people come and go frequently. Some agents quit their team and form a new one and there’s no bad blood.
The rank wars are also so good! Especially in season 2 and 3.

attention!!!!
anime / manga / animanga fans who have not yet seen or read World Trigger. WATCH IT. READ IT. IT IS GOOD AND FUN.
Some highlights:
THE KIDS MAY BE SOLDIERS BUT THEY ARE SAFE. How??? You might ask. Go on and watch it to find out ;)
Wholesome x shonen x found family
MC is not overpowered and have humble beginnings, knows that, and finds a way to work with what he has.
NO BULLIES. The kids/agents here are nice & give constructive criticism rather than be rude to our not-so-physically-powerful MC.
As a seiyuu fan, the abundance of characters = more seiyuu appearances! Guess-the-seiyuu is fun to play!
First bullet point because after watching a ton of shonen with kids in the frontlines, it is refreshing and so so nice to see a story where they can fight AND BE SAFE during battle.
WE NEED THE NEXT ARCS TO BE ANIMATED T^T

been on that world trigger brainrot fr (also a theory below the art) (long post)
I have a whole au living in my brain abt if yuma lives lmao. Maybe I'll sketch or talk abt it if anyone's interested.
Also, a theory I've been keeping to myself for years bcuz it's probably wrong:
Amo is the black trigger assassin. HEAR ME OUT !! I can't be the only one who's thought abt this at least a bit, right????
1. We haven't seen Amo's black trigger yet.
For triggers being so prominent, why haven't we seen Amo's? During Afto's invasion, we could have seen Amo's trigger, but we only got to see the aftermath. We also have no idea how he came into possession of it. We know it's VERY strong and VERY destructive. Kind of like an assassin we've heard of, yes? The assassin tore Yuma apart in a second, but it was only in like, small blasts? for lack of a better term. So the two are different in that aspect, but it's also been years since then, so Amo could have the room to improve.
2. Yuma hasn't met Amo yet.
Yuma has met like, almost everyone? Or has heard or seen them in passing? We've seen most of the squads, and were seeing more in the away missions test right now, and how they fight, their motives, and their skill level. Like, Yuma knows Amo exists, I'm pretty sure Amo knows Yuma exists, and yet they haven't met. Somehow. Seems kinda sus to me.
3. Kind of stupid, but Amo's hair and the assassin's is a little similar lmao.
Self explanatory. They do look different, but there's a three year difference, so yea.
4. We know next to nothing abt Amo.
We know his age, what he looks like, that he's anti-social, and doesn't really know how to reign in his power or that he really cares to. BUT we have no idea who is parents are, or WHERE he came from, or even when he joined border (that I can remember). He could be a neighbor, but he very may well be not.
5. We don't know what the assassin looks like.
We could chalk it to Yuma's memory, having the flashback being from his perspective and only seeing the assassin for a split second, but it also leaves a TON of possibilities of who they can be.
All of these put together COULD be deliberate. There has to be a reason!!! Like, waiting for a big reveal. Amo's mysterious nature really puts him up to be anything. But it really could just be that they haven't met yet because of simple reasons, and Amo is just some normal kid with a black trigger.
Like, this theory popped into my head one day as a what if, and since then, I've been running with it lmao. A lot of it is speculation. But I know that it can fall apart pretty easily, so I won't be surprised if it turns out I'm completely wrong.
But I also won't be surprised if I turn out to be right 😎
I hope I explained it at least somewhat coherently 😭

when rereading rinji's first appearance in chapter 13, i was really struck by the way he talked about chika's childhood and the way no one believed her about being targeted by trion soldiers.
"She says... when they first started coming after her, the Border base wasn't built yet. Nobody knew about Neighbors. So when she asked for help, nobody took her seriously. And then... there was one friend who did."
he very explicitly excises his own memories of that time from the story he tells osamu. so we Don't know about what rinji did at the time, how he felt about it, any of that. and in chika's firsthand account of the time from chapter 179, she Also doesn't mention Rinji specifically.
"My mom, my dad, and my classmates... none of them believed me. None of them except one friend."
although when she tells yuma about her situation she says she told both of them her secret. so thats there at least
to me, the most interesting read on the situation is that he didn't believe her either at first. maybe he changed his mind after aoba disappeared, or maybe in the wake of the first large-scale invasion and Border’s appearance, when ‘monsters who kidnapped my sister’s friend’ became a story with a lot more people who could tell it. either way, it’s clear that he suggested that chika get help from border, and she refused. it’s also clear that he doesn’t think much of their parents.
“We’re the only ones who can look after her.”
“We might die or get captured. Your parents would never forgive me if that happened.” “But that goes for you too...” “It’s not the same.”
(admittedly, he’s talking to a fourteen year old kid: in a very real way it isn’t the same. but that’s kind of belied by telling that same fourteen year old kid that he and rinji are the only ones who can look after chika, huh!)
i just think it would be really Something if, just as 15-16 yr old rinji realized his baby sister had been telling the truth about the monsters out to get her the whole time, chika was resolving not to let anyone know that very same thing.

I created World Trigger stickers for the past week.
I've been crazy about the manga again lately due to the recent updates.
Also dying from cliff hangers.
Have to cope somehow…

god i love chika amatori.
it's really interesting for her to at first appear like a typical Demure Shonen Girl, but even within that personality archetype she proves to be a real stand out character through being consistently interesting and important to the narrative with her own mysteries and social circle, in a way this genre's heroines' rarely ever get
such as: the story explicitly stating that the main driving force of the narrative so far (235 chapters and counting!) is in pursuit of HER ambitions, even going so far as to say that the male protags are just there to help out, their own objectives as things to do along the way
AND THEN
like 180 chapters in we have this big revelation that, instead of her combat ability being held back by her being "too soft-hearted" to shoot with real bullets, she's actually being selfish! putting on a facade of weakness because she doesn't want people to hate/fear her for being too strong... playing this balancing act of being strong enough to not be a liability, but weak enough to not be threatening...
and to me that Really resonates with like, just the experience of being a woman in general, and also more metatexually of being a female character (especially in a shonen action series)
like. female characters are despised for being too weak and despised for being too strong, and the line between them is crazy thin and arbitrary. so it's really cool to see that stigma used to subvert your expectations and make world trigger's heroine even more interesting than she already was!!
it is SOOOO satisfying to go back and reread the series with this knowledge completely re-contextualizing your view of her character, and done in a way that never feels like that first read was worthless or that her character was made weaker for the sake of a twist.
not to mention the way this aspect is reinforced by hatohara, a character who ACTUALLY couldn't shoot real bullets because she couldn't handle it, being literally one of the most intriguing characters and skilled combatants in the series. do you realize how insane it is that she only missed a shot ONCE? and she also gets mistakenly viewed as weak-willed by some of the people who were closest to her (ninomiya and ema), something that is tangibly countered.
it's just all so, so good i love her so much
#world trigger#my post#chika amatori#i hope i made it clear that i think her ''selfishness'' is not an inherently bad thing lol#i love that everyone immediately tells her that those emotions are perfectly natural#that selfish and selfless can coexist and its important to care about yourself#anyways#yayyyy watori i love you
