How I feel about this character

When I think about Arthur Pendragon, my head empties of thought, and is instead filled with the sustained screams of a deranged pterodactyl.

If I could cradle him against my chest like the poor, struggling, wounded animal he is, I would, lmfao. He is the epitome of a kicked dog. He tries so hard to be tough and to be enough, and is so easily hurt. He has been raised to believe in his own inadequacy, remaining staunchly faithful to that belief at all times. He blames himself, for everything, just as Uther taught him he should. He is blustering and stupid, he is smart and strategic, he is self-sacrificing and puts others first at all times. He’s petty. He’s noble. He’s a dick. He’s incredibly selfless and brave. He would willingly submit to excruciating torture rather than be vulnerable with his feelings, but it’s a complete waste of effort because his eyes do all the emotional yearning for him. He is incredibly lonely, and incredibly repressed.

I fucking love Arthur Pendragon.

I don’t need to labour this point; but I will. 💁🏻‍♀️

Merlin and Arthur are made for each other, and this is canon. “Two sides of the same coin”, “a half cannot hate that which makes it whole”, “I’ve seen the way he needs you; how you need him”. On top of this, it’s canon that Merlin is the person Arthur feels closest to — “You’re the only friend I have and I couldn’t bear to lose you”, “You, Merlin, are the only person I can trust”. Really Arthur???? Don’t you have a wife??? Oh yeah. That’s right. The same wife that you took on an anniversary picnic, WITH MERLIN. The same wife you proposed to, alone, EXCEPT FOR MERLIN. The same wife that, when you were courting her, you took her on a date in the woods and told her that if you could do ANYTHING, you’d RUN AWAY TO BE ALONE, WITH MERLIN. I weep for Gwen, she deserved better than this pathetic lovelorn loser.

But yeah, beyond the canon destiny-ness of it all, and Arthur’s canon declarations of love, lmao, they literally just are It for each other. They’re best friends, and they want to have so much sex about it. I love their banter, their intimacy, their understanding of one another… the fact that they truly are two sides of the same coin, because Merlin is the most powerful force in the kingdom, while Arthur is the most powerful political figure, and they both carry great burdens of responsibility that alienate them from most other people. And of course, the sexual chemistry. Good god.

My non-romantic OTP for this character

Morgana and Arthur. I will not die on the Pendragon Siblings Rights™️ hill, because there will be no need for my death: I will fight, and I will win, and vanquish all non-supporters.

Morgana is the only true, real family that Arthur has. He lets his walls down with Morgana in a similar way to how he is with Merlin; he lets himself be human with each of them. Arthur and Morgana love each other, even when they can’t stand each other. They are fiercely protective of each other, while antagonising each other constantly. This was a relationship the BBC well and truly fucked up, and for the correct interpretation of their siblingship, I would direct everyone to please refer to Jenn’s entire anthology of work. Lmfao

My unpopular opinion about this character

Hoo boy. Where do I start? And where do I stop. 🙃✋🛑🚫🙅🏻‍♀️ You and I both know the truth how many unpopular entirely correct headcanons I have of Arthur.

1) Arthur is gay

I say this is an opinion, but actually it’s fact. I know, because I’m right. 🤷🏻‍♀️ It’s hard being scientifically accurate 24/7 but someone’s gotta do it. Lmfao

Arthur is the epitome of walking, talking compulsory heterosexuality™️. His repression is central to his character. I don’t feel this with most characters, but with Arthur I do.

With Uther as his father, and the expectations and guilt and self-blame heaped on his shoulders since birth, plus the responsibility to his kingdom to marry and have children — Arthur has had to repress the absolute fuck out of any urges or feelings he has. And the more we repress, the more we yearn. Arthur is touch-starved, affection-starved, and restricted by his station. He can’t afford to even admit to it, to face it within himself. So he buries it. All the way down.

So much of what happens in canon confirms this for me. The fact that enchantments are used on him both with Sophia and Vivian (beautiful women that a young virile man should need no encouragement to be attracted to) is particularly…… interesting ( 🌈 ) and it is also interesting that he doesn’t go through with a marriage to either Elena or Mithian, despite the fact that they would be good political matches and they’re both attractive and his age. He’s been primed since birth to marry for political advantage, and he would be keenly aware that he’s lucky not to be married off to less appealing options.

On top of this, there’s also the way he looks at men. Especially – but not only – Merlin. He gazes with such fucking naked longing it’s insane. He’s constantly staring at Merlin’s mouth, and finding ways to touch him, in ways where he can pretend it’s only playful roughhousing but just… isn’t.

2) Arthur is not a Casanova

I do not understand the fanon tendency to make Arthur a confident, charming Ladies Man™️. He is so fucking awkward and repressed. He’s the type to boast and bluster about his sexual prowess, when in reality he’s inexperienced and prudish. I will die on this hill, alongside you Jenn. Also, this man doesn’t have a player’s bone in his body; it’s canon that he kissed Gwen one time and immediately was like ‘well, this means marriage, right?’ He is absolutely not equipped to handle flings or casual sex in any way, shape or form. Lmao

Merlin on the other hand has had a decent number of sexual encounters, which Arthur would be supremely disturbed to know. Not for any reason of course. He’s just horrified that anyone has been subjected to sleeping with Merlin, which Arthur wouldn’t wish on anyone, and certainly not himself.

3) Arthur is a bottom

🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ Again, I can’t help being academically flawless and revered for my incredibly accurate wisdom. This is just true fact; Arthur is primarily a bottom.

Again, a lot of the time this is not a hill I’d set out to die upon, but for Arthur, I’ll do it. Because he has so much pressure on him to be the pinnacle of untouchable masculinity – from Uther, from his role as Camelot’s sole heir, from his position as the leader of Camelot’s army and as the kingdom’s most renowned knight – it just fits his character so much that he would, deep down, be fucking aching to put that mantel down, to not have to perform “masculinity” and dominance in every area of his life. I think he’s desperate to be free of that, to be able to let that go, and also to be looked after; and I think that’s one of the reasons he would like bottoming – not only for the physical pleasure of it, but also the release from the chains of expectation that weigh him down at all times. (Obviously it’s not un-masculine to bottom, but I think it would represent that in canon!Arthur’s mind.)

4) Arthur is slightly shorter than Merlin

And Arthur is constantly seething about it, lmao.

One thing I wish had happened with this character in canon

It’s difficult to choose just one when the BBC has provided such a plethora of options, lmao, but if I was going to choose just one thing, it would have been Arthur finding out about Merlin’s magic early on – either at the end of season one or early in season two.

Arthur knowing about Merlin’s magic would have changed everything. It would have allowed Merlin to let down his guard with Arthur completely. It would have sped up Arthur’s acceptance of magic, and his rejection of his father’s dogma. It would have drawn Merlin and Arthur even closer. It also would have meant Merlin could be open with Arthur about everything that was going on, all the threats facing Arthur and Camelot, so things would have unfolded completely differently. And we also could have got the BAMF!Merlin/Arthur duo on the battlefield that we fucking deserved.
