A rant about the Chicago Art Scene by @oprah_gucci. — — — — My Two Cents: My feeling exactly about the scene. I was just asked, “Why is it that it’s hard for Chicago artists to blow up?” Its because no one is giving room for other artists to shine... we don’t share each other’s music or show love to folks besides the ones we love. And it’s not just the artists: I blame the BLOGS/MEDIA too! They’re part of reason how I discover new music... so they also need to do better. It’s crazy how I get more love in NEW YORK AND EVEN GERMANY before Chicago. Even before rocking with my band #TheLandBand, only a select number of people gave me space to show my work. Some people never heard of me until I rocked with my band or a particular individual. So we need to fix this. So what’s the solution? Chicago Blogs/Playlist Curators/Podcasts, etc: FIND ANOTHER ARTIST TO WRITE ABOUT. Event curators: Ask around (and not just your friends) on who they like in the city... Artists: Collaborate with one another and come and support them in any way possible and support artists who Aren’t your friends. People who THINK they are artists: question whether this life is for you. Know that you always have to be a face. Be a manager, or a booking agent, or someone behind the scenes because it’s too many “rappers” - find your true passion elsewhere. Being the face is more than it meets the eye. Supporters/Fans: Go to shows, spread the word, purchase a song or repost the music you like.
