not to be sappy or anything, i'm having such a wonderful day and i'm positively overwhelmed from all the love and attention and gifts
but FUCK! did it all make me think of my birthday almost ten years ago, during the worst year of my life. when i sat alone in my tiny apartment, absolutely shattered, eating a slice of cake by myself. when i was deeply depressed and suicidal, in complete isolation, with my heart broken into a million jagged pieces with seemingly no way to put it back together. my father was in the icu, dying. it was my birthday, but it was far from a celebration. the juxtaposition of what a birthday was supposed to represent and everything that was happening in my life was like a slab of rock, crushing me. i forced myself to eat that fucking cake just to maybe feel a little bit of relief. a little bit of happiness. but it just left me sobbing at the table. i didn't even know where to start. how to pick myself up. and looking back.. i couldn't really, as everything was still actively falling apart.
i had a lot of birthdays afterwards that still carried that ghost. that feeling. the memory of that misery. the hopelessness. i'd smile and press on because i couldn't afford to look back. but it was all fragile. some of it fake. because part of me believed i'd never truly recover.
and now, while the memory is still full of sorrow, it's distant. it's being eroded year by year, day by day. by people's kindness. by sweet words and thoughtful gifts. all the warm little trinkets that part of me thinks i don't really deserve. but i appreciate it. all of it.
thank you so much for making this day so special, for taking even a moment of your time to think of me.

Pancakes
I have made various fruit syrups before, generally whenever a berry harvest is overabundant, but this year, the cherry syrup? GoOd LorD! I am, if at all possible, making a GALLON of that stuff next year.
While we were at the orchard picking them, I thought a 'bucketful' of sour cherries looked like quite a generous amount. I am now regretting that decision, and I'll probably shoot for twice that much next year. Ten pounds( 4.5 kg) made about three pies and maybe 3 cups of syrup.
I wonder if I could make syrup out of peaches? They're firmer than berries/cherries, it would be a bit different. Maybe if I pureed them with a bit of apple juice, to get the proper consistency? Hmm. Peachy thoughts.

images and talk of dead animals under the cut (specifically shrimp, dunno if that'll change any minds at all)
without trying to sound too cold, i wanted to use Fungus Girl as an "experiment" to figure out if theres a way to preserve a shrimp body without the use of chemicals (my idea is just having it on open display like how some do with bugs). right now i've just been letting the body dry out in a well-lit ventilated area, and some interesting things have happened. for one, the body has become almost entirely brittle, and while handling it i accidentally broke off one of the antennule (i am so sorry Miss Fungus...) that means if you want the shrimp in a specific "pose" or like, with its legs out, you need to delicately move it while its still wet. it also seems like the carapace is becoming transparent, or at least is changing into a much lighter color, which is strange. not sure why its happening. if it doesnt change much beyond this and it stays in relatively good shape i might go with this method for preserving shrimp if i ever feel the need to. i'll keep an eye out on how things go
