“...I’m sorry,” he comments simpy after a few long beats of silence, he still isn’t looking at you, “I do not have it in me…to talk about how I feel right now.”

It’s hard for him, being in a relationship, especially one this serious. One this vulnerable. He wishes it wasn’t, it seems to come so easy to you.

But you just don’t get it, he doesn’t think so at least.

His entire childhood was one filled with a very verbally imposing father. One who insisted he keep his mouth shut, talking or screaming over him whenever he tried to voice how he felt. A simple dismissive wave sent towards him for feeling any type of way. 

And he knows you, he knows you wouldn’t do that. He knows he’s safe in your arms, he knows his heart is protected by you and your hands alone, and the last thing you would do would be to crush it between your calloused palms at one disagreement. 

But the thought that you could, the simple idea that you could dismiss him just as quickly, makes him feel like that little boy with thick tears in his eyes as he begs to be heard again. And he won’t risk that.

He expects you to get upset, he expects you to sigh heavily and storm out at his refusal. 

But you don’t

“Okay,” you respond simply in your soft tone, offering him an understanding nod, “I understand, we don’t have to talk. But I’m here when you’re ready, if you are eventually.”

He doesn’t respond, he’s baffled only slightly. He pauses again before he nods, swallowing thickly as he finally meets your gaze.

Sincere, understanding, loving. 

His eyes mist over, and it’s not long before his arms are wrapped around your waist. His head burrows itself into the crook of your neck while the hot tears stream down his face slowly, and the feeling he gets when you hold him in return instead of pushing him away is indescribable. It feels like home.

you've made him a better man. he doesn't even think twice about that statement because he knows it as fact. it's not like he's some superhero movie villain that you needed to fix, or that he's some cold apathetic monster. no, you've instead help him heal his traumas that seemed impossible to until now. you've cemented the cracks in his heart with gentle love, one that can't be replaced. you have helped him mold himself into the man he wants to be. you've stuck by him through every single thing and taught him how to be a better person, following in the path of your loving example. you've made him a better man, and he is forever grateful for it.

One of the reasons I don't like giving advice to people is that they might regret it and people love to blame others for ruining their lives instead of themselves. It's hard for me to work for you for days, weeks, hours and then you simply say "Your words affected my thoughts, you made me break up with him when we were in love." Thanks, I wasn't jealous or particularly devoted to your partner, I loved you and tried to be who you wanted to be. I know it may seem manipulative. In reality, asking someone to make choices for you is like giving them the right to control your life, but I've never done anything but help you. I've never regretted my choices because I've been by your side for years to make sure you had the best. Sadly, if anyone should object, it's me, but the truth is, neither of us has the right to object, because that's what we both wanted. However, I am sincerely sorry if I ruined your life, I am sorry if you never have the chance to fall in love again, I tried my best for you to have the best, because in my opinion you deserve the best in the world, but you should have been wiser in choosing me, I have even ruined my own life, how can I save someone else's life?
