Canon Verses:

Pre-Game: 10-26yo. Following a dramatic toy-car accident, little Jumin professionally befriends Jihyun Kim, a neighbor. The most unsuspecting friendship forms between the two.

Casual Story: 26yo. Someone has breached 707′s security system and entered the RFA chatroom. Who is this intruder? Jumin doesn’t like this one bit, and will do anything he can to see light shed on this shady mystery.

AUs:

Final Fantasy VII: 26yo. Though C&R is mainly based in an unnamed flourishing town in the Mideel region, the quickly rising power of Shinra Electric Power Company has inevitably caught the interest of Jumin’s father. Interested in claiming a foothold as a stakeholder of ShinRa, Jumin travels to the expanding city of Midgar, wanting to see for himself what these “mako reactors” can do and their potential for the whole world.

Writing Sample:

The shouts and calls of the reporters were so loud and so many, Jumin had to thank God he didn't get dizzy. The security guards opened them a path, and he nudged his new fiancé to climb into the limo first... he still had to be a gentleman, after all.

When it was finally his turn, he sat into the seat and let out a small sigh of relief when the door closed, immediately muffling the chaos that was going on outside. His eyes hurt from all the flashes.... "I should have brought shades with me."

He sat forward slightly to talk to Driver Kim and ask that they be taken home, and then closed the lid of the window that separated the driver's cabin from the passengers' space, giving them privacy. That was also part of the act. Driver Kim was not prone to let the media approach him for interviews, but just in case he did, he could have told everyone that Jumin Han and his “promised one” had immediately secluded themselves in the back of the limousine the moment they had left the convention. To exchange affections, no doubt.

Only then, he finally addressed the figure sitting next to him. “We’re finished. Take those clothes off, now.”

I’ve debated for the past few weeks about whether to say this.  I’ve made this post and read it over and over.  I’m posting it now after hearing about some things in the fandom today.

This fandom, the one for Mystic Messenger, is the only one I’ve ever been a part of.  I’ve met some amazing people in it.  I’ve been awestruck at the talent, acceptance, and companionship I’ve found here.

There is a problem though, and I think we all need to start talking about it, before someone ends up in jail.

The age range here is massive.  That’s a wonderful thing, in my eyes.  That so many people of such varied backgrounds and who are so wildly distanced by age can come together and get along so well is just another part of the Mystic Messenger miracle.

It carries a risk though.  Especially when we all tend to be so thirsty that Cheritz had to state that entries for their swimsuit contest had to be SFW.

The risk is that fans over the age of 18 may be interacting with fans under the age of 18.  Minors can access NSFW content by simply clicking a button that says they’re okay with that.

Personally, I’m not here to monitor the actions of minors.  They have parents who should be doing that.  And yes, I’m well aware that many minors are not innocent.  I’m older, I’m not a relic of the Elizabethan era.

The problem, the risk, is that a parent WILL be monitoring their minor child.  They find out that the minor is clicking through those alerts.  They catch the minor child in a roleplay or an NSFW Discord channel.  They find a piece of art depicting their minor child in a compromising position with a character from the game, a gift or commission.

What happens next depends on the parents.  They might hold their child accountable for their own actions.  They might decide to charge the other adults with a range of sexual abuse charges that can destroy everything a person has worked for.

Sexual abuse charges, and charges of pedophilia, can cost jobs, marriages, custody of children, friendships, and more.  They do not go away, ever.  A person on the sex offender registry is there for life.

Don’t think that if you, a minor, says that the charges are false, it’ll fix anything.  My brother was 19 and got his 17 yr old girlfriend pregnant.  The week before their wedding, her mother filed charges against him.  It was cleared, after a few years and a lot of money pumped into the judicial system.  In the meantime, he had a damn hard time providing for her and their son.  No one would hire him. 

I’m not making anything up about the dangers here.  I’ve witnessed what happens.

If there are minors reading this, I will say straight up, I don’t think your age determines anything specific about you.  This isn’t about you, on any personal level.  This is about the laws and how completely fucked an adult can be just for trusting that when you type something online, they’re talking to another adult because you clicked the button that said you were.

Don’t do it.  Please.  Don’t risk destroying someone’s life.  I know you don’t want anyone judging you about your age, I was there once.  My age isn’t so advanced that I don’t remember.  Trust that no one is judging you, but we have to protect ourselves.

All that said, I’m going to ask, without any judgement,

I write NSFW stuff and share NSFW content from other people.  Quite some time ago, I set the age restriction on my Tumblr and have been very careful to tag my AO3 stuff appropriately for very good reason.

It’s just.... after the 100th post like “Rika is abusive” just, yeah, we know, we know, I’m an abuse victim too and I like her, I’m allowed to like villains, bye. I’m also a Cersei Lannister fan and used to get crap for roleplaying her too a few years ago so I guess we’re back to this.

I feel the fandom act like there’s more people excusing her crap than there actually is (just ignore them ?). I hardly see any.

You have nothing to apologize for. I understand everyone’s grieving right now. It’s a very difficult thing to go through.

My least favorite character in Mysic Messenger would have to be V. I find it difficult to look passed everything he’s apologized for in defense of Rika. However, I’m doing my best to alter this perspective and have more empathy for him as a well-developed Cheritz character.

And my favorite character, hands down, is Saeran. When I first started roleplaying him, I had a vision of who he was. The release of new information and DLCs has really blasted that vision. And yet, every view I have of him or could have of him could still stand and be true. He’s such an amazingly well-written character with deep, deep meanings even to his existence, not to mention his actions and views. Hats off to Cheritz. They blew me away.

On Characterization and Character Development in Relationships (featuring Jumin Han)

In which I rant about the Mystic Messenger fandom a little, writing, and some of my experience as the mun of @cr-international-official.

I guess my post before wasn’t enough to satisfy me, because I kept finding posts about people decrying negative traits of characters that I love and I woke up still irritated about it. Although this happens with Solas all the time, and Fenris to a lesser degree, Jumin is the one I want to address right now. I’ve virtually written a novel on all the meta shit I’ve written about Solas (and writing a literal novel on Fenris,) but Jumin is a special case because of the kind of media he comes from. While all three characters are able to be romanced, the former are not nearly as changed or affected as the latter, at least not so directly. Also he’s the one I kept reading posts about, so I might as well just stick with him in the interest of keeping this post focused.

I have written previously about roleplaying and the effect it has on characters as well as Jumin Han’s D/s ending itself, but this topic goes a bit further with things touched on in both of those posts. There are two very important things that writers should understand about a character proper as well as a character that is engaged in some kind of close or frequent interpersonal relationship with someone else:

1) No one is static, ever. They will change over time even if they resist that change.

2) People will gain aspects of another person when they are around them for long periods of time, both positive and negative traits.

Those two things are why, as a player character in any game with writers worth their salt (or, shit any character in a strong relationship in fiction,) your influence will cause you to end up with a character that is different from the one you started with. Fenris at the end of a romance is very different depending on whether you are kind, agree with him, and work to bolster his independence or you’re prickly, argumentative, and overbearing. Will Graham is a very different man at the beginning of NBC’s Hannibal than he is by the end of Season 3, and the same goes for Hannibal Lecter, so this by no means only applies to video games. This is in all fiction and all its forms.

Jumin Han and the other members of the RFA are not exceptions to this rule. If as an MC you are patient, firm, and caring, you will get a very different Jumin then if you are clingy, dependent, and jealous. No, you don’t “fix” him if you’re the former, and the game doesn’t pretend like you do. You simply finally helped him see the path he can go down towards being mentally healthy.

Does that take away from any other route he can take? What about putting Jumin in relationships that are inherently toxic, or set a flame under the negative traits of his personality that he fights against? No. They are all Jumin. Possessive, calculating, domineering? Jumin. Awkward, sheltered, curious? Jumin. Protective, caring, resolute? Jumin. They are all Jumin. Depending on who he’s attracted to or in a relationship with (if he’s in one at all) depends on what traits he has that are emphasized, and what new ones he picks up. That’s how real people in real relationships work, so it makes sense that fictional characters should be bound by this kind of influence, isn’t it? If you want a certain kind of Jumin, make an MC that brings that out in him or pair him with a canon character that will do the same.

I realize that my interpretation of Jumin is my own, but I put a lot of effort and time into researching and getting into his head before properly starting to roleplay him at @cr-international-official, both on and off tumblr. My opinion of romancing player characters in general is pretty negative (as mentioned here) so if I were to entertain ships or friendships, it would be with other canon characters or really well written OCs. So far I have three ongoing roleplays with friends that have him pursuing or interested in some kind of relationship with various characters (Saeran, Zen, and Saeyoung) and although the change is more obvious in some than others, I fully intend to see him being very different the farther we go. I mean, shit, if you want to see an example of this change you can read through Jumin’s tag for Saeran. Saeran’s change is even more clear through their threads. Everything that’s mentioned off-hand on the blogs and plenty of things that haven’t been have all been rp’d out to make the character shift as natural as possible. People won’t always get to see it, but it’s there.

Just kidding let’s show some examples. Here’s an excerpt from the first time Jumin and Saeran interact face to face. Saeran has just ripped long sleeves off of a shirt he had been wearing and Jumin watched him and offered to take them from him, assuming he was discarding them:

It’s definitely in my Top Ten moments of any rp I’ve been involved in in the last decade if not ever. What they want from each other, or their pull to each other is plain to the audience, if it isn’t to the characters (moreso than it’s made over the tumblr blogs around the same time.) Admittedly it might be too self-aware of Jumin to be that straightforward at this point, but being honest and blunt is kind of his thing. He’s not emotionally invested yet, so he’s not vulnerable. At this point, Saeran is just intrigued, and attracted on a basic level. As time goes on, they get more comfortable and conversely more vulnerable.

Juan as a ship isn’t perfect though by any stretch. While they have chemistry and can have very vulnerable moments together: (Ignore the timestamps, Discord is weird)

They also exacerbate parts of each others’ personalities that most would consider detrimental, both to themselves and to each other:

The time span between the first excerpt and the last one shown here is about a month canonically.

Juan is like Hannigram levels of codependency and exacerbating bad character traits at times. They could be a perfect fit, but in some of the worst possible ways.

Getting off of my OTP train here before I derail this post entirely, Jumin wouldn’t act the way he does around Saeran with anyone else, because being with Saeran changes who he is, even if it’s just bringing out traits he doesn’t typically expose to others (and getting some of Saeran’s sense of humor.) Likewise, Jumin is different if he gets into a relationship with a clingy, possessive MC, even if their character dynamic is meant to be similar in how he changes. Both allow him to become possessive and indulge in the part of him that wants complete control over another person, but in very different ways. Still, that’s just one Jumin you can end up with at the end; due to how repressed and curious he is beyond his rigid control, he can end up in a lot of different situations and, I think, with the potential to be with a good variety of different people. Although Zenmin amounts to a flaming zeppelin or a firework, it’s pretty fun, and Juciel is pure and angsty goodness, they’re all perfectly reasonable as long as the writer(s) understand the characters (both their good and bad traits) and are able to write all aspects of them as well as they understand them.

In the end, all a ship or a relationship between two characters comes down to in regards to popularity and believablility is just that: execution. You could have the best characters in the world, but if you don’t know how to navigate them well, they’re always going to fall flat. If you are terrified of your character changing naturally over time, or of the characters rubbing off traits and characteristics on to each other, all you’re going to end up with is a boring, rigid relationship that feels like plastic and is just as interesting. So many fanfictions fail for these reasons (and original fiction,) because they either can’t execute what they want, or they fail to understand who they’re writing.

In closing, if you want Jumin Han (or any canon character) to be a certain way that runs counter to who he already is, you have already failed before you even started. If you want any character to have an arc where they end up different at the end, whether for the better or not, you first have to have them start out as they are before you can move them forward. This goes for romantic arcs where characters influence each other and standalone ones. Jumin is a fantastically deep character with a lot of potential, and putting him into a box tells me more about the fans that do it than the writers over at Cheritz who made him.

I. Am laughing so hard and I'm sorry, because I don't know if this is meant to be a joke or if I truly confused someone somehow, but this survey is about the birthday event I held here on my blog, in which I roleplayed Saeyoung for a week and not Cheritz' birthday event for the twins.
