Savate

A French kickboxing martial art, Savate is a popular style that uses various kicks to inflict damage on opponents. Interestingly, savateurs wear boots when in the ring as Savate is French for "old shoe".

Savate also focuses on kicking with the foot, a vastly different approach from Muay Thai where the focus is on the shin.

In MMA today, UFC heavyweight Cheick Kongo is one of the best known savateurs.

Training in kickboxing in France, Kongo uses many of the art's deadly kicks to dominate inside of the Octagon.

Kongo has also effectively used his Savate training to amass a 21-2 record in kickboxing, knocking out 12 opponents.

Ryan Bader takes UD over Cheick Kongo at Bellator 280. Retains heavyweight title.

Went about as expected. Bader pushed Kongo into the cage for like 5 rounds, getting him down to the mat several times and just never giving him room to throw any offense. This was a real throwback fight to like 2012. Not fun. Do not recommend.

Card started early because it’s in Paris. I was at work so I missed his fight but Yoel got a 3rd round KO.

Bellator 199's Javy Ayala is more than a gatekeeper

Javy Ayala (10-6) has been tapped a lot lately for fights in the heavyweight division and he has been called upon again to face Cheick Kongo (27-10-2) at Bellator 199. While he gets tapped to face a lot of big names in the division a lot lately, he is by no means a gatekeeper for it. His name was mentioned once as an alternate for the Heavyweight World Grand Prix, but even though it did not come up again Ayala is more than ready to get past Kongo and step in if anyone needs replacing.

Cheick Kongo subs Sergei Kharitonov at the bell in the 2nd!

What an old man heavyweight fight with both guys being wildly unable to move laterally. Kharitonov controlled the pace for most of the fight, walking Kongo down and working him up and down with the jab. It didn’t last though as part of the way through the 2nd, Kongo landed a huge shot that hurt Sergei. From there, Kongo punched on him along the fence and eventually took him down. Kharitonov, after eating some shots, got his neck snatched for the RNC and tapped right before the bell. Good thing too cause Kongo looked exhausted as hell.
