The world building in Toriko is legitimately so good, and the power crawl is I kid you not probably the best I have ever seen in a shonen and these are SO related guys

Like Toriko shows up and you know he and the others are the Four Heavenly Kings and you THINK this means they're the Most Powerful Dudes Ever right but turns out that, no, they're literally just the IGO darlings because they're a bunch of orphans raised in the public eye and they ARE powerful, regular people understand that, but people don't get that they're STILL the IGO darlings -- at the beginning of the show none of them would stand a chance against Ichiryu or any of the other higher ups.

They're still very much seen as Babies and this is driven in when they reveal OHOHO there's a whole gourmet world out there that most people can't survive five seconds in--and guess what the 4 heavenly kings are NOT among the number who can. Gives them a goal, something to work towards.

ALSO usually the worst thing to do in a fantasy world is start throwing arbitrary power levels on things (7 deadly sins, DBZ I am looking at YOU) but Toriko does it and it works because they give a basic, easy meaning for each unit (capture level 1 means it would take 10 normal people to get it or something) and then it sticks to that (I think the highest we ever see is the Final Boss of the manga with a capture level of 30,000 which is a ton but sure is evocative)

And this isn't just done with the fighter people either! Komatsu gets this just as much, and it's probably one of my favorite world building things because they use our knowledge of the real world against us as readers to achieve it. Komatsu is introduced as a cook in a five star restaurant and obviously we're like "aha so he's a very good chef" only to reveal several arcs in that, in this food-focused world, the cap is actually ten stars and Komatsu is actually a solidly mid ranked chef at the start.

There are so many more things because the worldbuilding of Toriko is in turns mind-blowingly brilliant and absolutely unhinged and I love that but basically they do an amazing job managing the audience's expectations by leveraging our knowledge of the real world and tropes commonly used in similar media to set up and then pulling the rug out from under us and I love it.

I like the Toriko x Pokemon AU, how about Toriko's interactions and reactions to us and our pokemon? Does he meet us during the Gararagator event?

Meeting Toriko

You will meet Toriko after the Garagator events that he and Komatsu had been through, like the Rainbow Fruit Arc or the Puffer Fish Arc.

I will make a separate fic/headcanon that is similar question to this but with all the Heavenly Kings and with specific pokemon for them to meet, like/are similar to but for now, lets focus on Toriko.

I always like to imagine your meeting with him during the two arcs that I had mentioned, specifically one about the adventures they have in getting the Rainbow Fruit.

The hot sun shine warmly upon your outing with your in all but blood brother, Komatsu at the Central Gourmet Wholesale Market where you had decided to give him a suprise visit two days ago and have a fun time together just like old times with your Pokémon. It was the battle for the fittest when you had announce to your hundreds of companions that you are going to visit Komatsu and are bringing some of them along for the trip.

Many are eagered to jump to the chance to meet their short chef friend again!

Which lead with you trying to evade a stampede of pokémon running all over the place to get a spot on the trip.

In the end, you had decided to bring one of your little Milceries along that had gotten very close to Komatsu, Appletun, Meganium, and Mimikyu, since it was left in the dust and you wanted to give it a little more attention.

Komatsu was bewildered two days ago at the news he got from one of the waiters about a someone waiting for them at the dining hall during minutes before closing, with two beasts that they cant recognized. One being a floating cream and the other a turtle-like beast with a crust as a shell.

Those descriptions were familiar to him as he went out to see who was waiting for him, in which it turned out to be you!

You two had chatted from evening until morning, yesterday 'till today, where you had catch up of what you two were doing so far in life as your pokémon enjoyed the food that you had both made for them all. If you two were outing in a outdoor eating establishment with your partners eating away the food in joy, people will stare and be shock at such strange Gourmet beasts. They have never seen something like them before.

One of them even teases about you two buying food for a doll until they realize it is actually alive!

The last day of your staying kinda took a turn when Komatsu was called for work to go to the Gourmet Market with an IGO Chief named Johannes, who came for something involving an ingredient.

Now, you have heard of the IGO, and their work, but you dont exactly put them in the lime light or any sort of light whatsoever. The organization kinda reminded you of some that are similar, but the name alone being spoken through your mouth made you feel like a pit is in your stomach, making you uncomfortable and uneasy. Yet, nonetheless, you just view them neutrally.

The same feeling came back when you look around the market. The place made you quasi whenever you see so many Gourmet beasts being sold and displayed out in the open. Back in your home world of pokemon, it never was like this Gourmet market place since majority of everyone in the planet is vegetarian with very little meat eaten. Even when meat is eaten, it never was sold like...this. Even after years of being here in this strange and unique of the Gourmet age, you will never understand some of it's customs.

"She's spunky" as you and Komatsu watch Tina, a news reporter for the "Gourmet News", switch personalities between on and off camera and being dragged away to prevent any toruble from intervening IGO business, you finally meet the man your brother has been talking about, Toriko.

Toriko didnt exactly felt any different to any of the Gourmet hunters you meet prior today, but his aura...it didnt take a genius to knew that this man is strong, and its not because of how he carried that Underbite Dragon . The Milcery, who was floating beside Komatsu had let out a cry and hid behind his head from the aura she had felt. Appletun, on the other hand, took a few steps back away from Toriko, feeling wary from what he felt in the man. Meganium and Mimikyu, who are in their pokeballs, shook abit.

It seems your Pokémon, too, had felt the aura...

There wasnt much interaction between you and Toriko. Komatsu had introduced the Heavenly King to once he had realize you are there.

Toriko was very curious about the creatures you have. He had never seem them before or recognise them from any data or encounter he had. The smell of Appletun quickly invaded his nose. It smells so good! The Heavenly King already had taken a swipe of pie skin from Appletun and ate it with a delighted moan from the taste, much to you and Komatsu's shock! He later on apologises but...

HE EVEN HAVE THE ODESCITY TO ASK TO HAVE A TASTE OF THEM!!!

It took all you could to stop yourself from growling and running away from the man as possible and preventing Appletun from using Dragon Rage on the man upon hearing the comment!

He may be an Apple Pie, and he may let it slide of Toriko taking a bite, but this dragon is one where you should earn it's respect!

This action kinda increase your thoughts subconsciously about Gourmet hunters being nothing but killers and eaters. Yes, we have to kill to eat food and to survive but the amount of animals at the market and how many times Gourmet hunters had come and try to hunt your pokemon back home....

It wasnt pretty.

Gourmet Tamers (atleast, he thinks you are one) are rare. And they dont just come off as genuine or great as they come but Toriko was definetly impressed and interested in hearing and meeting you and these so called "Pokémon" in person.

There were rumours from other Gourmet Hunters that he had heard from have told the same thing over and over again : how bloodthirsty and ruthless you are with your unimaginable beasts that could rivaled the 8 kings of the Gourmet World.

They werent entirely wrong. The way you have strategically ordered your pokemon through the Troll Kongs with Meganium's sun bean and vines, Milcery's attract, and Appletun's bullet seeds. Toriko raised a brow when he saw you releasing Mimikyu, a small rugged clotheds...thing, in front of the Kongs that were shaking and even slightly backing away...

You soon later on, after Toriko decided to use Knocking instead of killing one of the Troll Kongs, had learned that he may not be exactly like those Gourmet hunters you meet. He may eat alot like when he had eaten a thousand dishes at the Gourmet Hotel, is a glutton, loves big juicy beasts but he has his morals in hunting, and that is to kill what he wents to eat, not for the thrill.

You may have gotten a new shine in the Gourmet Hunters....for now.

Bagel Manga Review: Toriko

If I had a nickel for every manga I've read focused on food and the hunt for it where your desire to eat can be physically removed from you and be the equivalent of a death sentence, I would have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.

Toriko is a shounen battle manga about big beefy men in the vein of Fist of the North Star and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. But what sets this manga apart is the central focus on food. Instead of having some new bad guy every few chapters (though there are a fair share of antagonists) most of the battles are focused around battling newer and bigger monsters in hopes of acquiring an especially rare ingredient.

The story is headed by Toriko, a gourmet hunter who tracks down and discovers new and dangerous gourmet foods, and Komatsu, a 5-star chef who follows around Toriko to learn more about the ingredients he prepares. There are plenty of other characters that make up a fairly large cast that have a simple but fun dynamic with each other.

The highlight of this manga is the ridiculous over-the-top foods that the characters eat and experiencing the gourmet-centric society that Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro imagines. There is a good amount of thought put into the world-building with the amount of build-up and payoff reminding me of Hunter x Hunter, but don't expect something as advanced as Dungeon Meshi. The foods and environments are primarily dictated by Rule of Cool.

One thing that I appreciate is that even though the power levels of the characters continually rise to ridiculous levels (a la Dragon Ball), there is a well-established upper limit of where that power can be. Characters introduced early on in the manga such as Knocking Master Jiro provide good targets to make sure that the power scaling doesn't get too far ahead of itself.

Overall I really enjoyed it. The story gets pretty out there, but it always stays rooted in the simple pleasure of enjoying a good meal with friends. If you enjoy shounen battle manga like I do and want a meal with a lot of substance it's definitely worth giving a shot.

Toriko is also notable for having a close connection, partnership and affiliation with many of the world's most influential individuals, such as being the combo partner of chef Komatsu (one of the top 100 chefs in the world), the adopted son and apprentice of IGO President Ichiryuu (alongside the other Four Heavenly Kings), the fiancée of Gourmet Research Chief Rin (one of the IGO's highest ranking officials), the adoptive father figure of a Battle Wolf named Terry Cloth (making him the only human known to have ever tamed a Battle Wolf), and is a close ally and friend of the leaders of both the Gourmet Knights (a noble order of Gourmet Hunters) and the Gourmet Yakuza (one of the world's most notable criminal organizations).

Midora got reincarnated as Skull De Mort

After the events of the manga Midora got reincarnated into the khr world

Midora being an orphan in this life too , as a early teen or preteen(and I cannot express this enough he is very young ) decided to join a circus mainly because it looked interesting enough at the moment and he was in a fancy mood

Then he gets an invite from Chekerface and decides " why not ?" Resulting in him meeting the rest of the Arcobaleno (and him being unimpressed with them) . After the first meeting he started ditching the rest of the meet ups resulting in a growingly bizarre , unique and downright cartoony game of cat and mouse . Consisting of the Arcobaleno trying to catch Midora at last , only to always miss by the skin of their teeth . Even more comical by the fact that Midora will for years to come not know what flames are

That continued until it was time for the ritual at which point Chekerface just teleported him at the time he was needed , binding them all together . With all of it being the same as in canon except Midora rather than as baby/toddler got stuck as a teen(aka as the age he got the curse which is at maximum like 15 but everyone thinks he is 19 at youngest)

The rest of the Arcobaleno were outraged as to why he got to keep his adult form while they are babies even Lal didn't get spared while being the"defective" so why does he get to keep his body ? Verde then put out the theory that he might just have such a monstrous flame amount and/or purity that he is essentially overfeeding the pacifier , after all it will explain why he got chosen as the Cloud of the Arcobaleno despite being a civilian

While they are exchanging theories Midora is escaping the manor because he doesn't give a tomato what is happening , death retired him from world/planet saving bullshit the rest can deal whit it . He has fought God , he's had enough of being alive . Is he overfeeding this thing ? He doesn't know , maybe yes ? Does he give a tomato ? No .

And so he continues following his fancy and going whenever he likes and doing whatever he likes . Creating and destroying(most of the time by accidents) cults , famiglia , families , business, restaurants and etc . One of the more passionate cults even started famiglia or was it the famiglia starting a cult ? Either case they are at the moment both and are calling him their boss . What was their name again ? Car something . In either case they are surprisingly good at finding him . They even found him a pet octopus so that is nice .

Anyway one day while he was on a walk on this cozy little island called Japan he stumbled upon a kid getting bullied and while he might be apathetic towards humanity as a whole he isn't going to let a kid be bullied before him . So he stepped in . After scaring the bullies away the kid(who felt so much like his little Starjun when he was young) introduced himself as Tsuna , tried to give him one of his onigiri as thanks for the help . Midora of course tried to refuse gently as to not hurt the little child who reminds him of his son so much , the kid however like a little amber haired version of Komatsu , succeeded in making him eat (chefs and their charisma) .

And the onigiri was undeniably delicious so Midora asked who has made it , with Tsuna answering his Mama who is the best cook .

While Midora would like to form a combo with her he isn't going to force her into it even if this onigiri was more than he has eaten in quite a while so he will probably continue on his way walking with no end goal . But first before that he is going to escort this kid who reminds him of his own child so much to his home safely .

When he got him home his mother tried and succeeded in getting him to stay for dinner(again chefs and their charisma) . While eating he did learn a lot more of this family of two and he might have grown a little attached .

With him being attached he did stay in town a lot , he is still going on long walks but he always returns to this place that is slowly starting to become a home for him . With little Tsuna who reminds him of his Starjun , of the little chef with big heart Komatsu and sometimes of himself when times were sipmle before he lost the one most precious to him . The one who Nana reminds him of , the one who is always so gentle and patient yet protective in a way only a mother can be like Fronze like his mother . With these memories being here his stay in the little town became long and often . He also became such a frequent visitor of the Sawada household he practically lived with them , with a room for him , a toothbrush for him , plates and mugs for him and more . Odako even got an aquarium in his room .And if he gets to babysit Tsuna while Nana takes time for herself and her hobbies . Well he wants to replay her somehow even if it's not much as Tsuna is such a good child that he is a blessing to babysit , always so curious as to what is everything in the world and asking questions and if Midora doesn't know the answer they both try to find it which is one of Midora's favorite activities with Tsuna .

One day after Nana had won 3 place in a competition she took part in , Midora took her and Tsuna on a celebration in a sushi place he and Tsuna found on one of their walks around the neighborhood a while back . Nana did try to say she would be playing but Midora stopped her by saying that the one for who is the reason for celebrating shouldn't play and that it is his gift for her for getting 3 place . The chef was rather good as well , not as much as Nana , Komatsu , Starjun or Fronze but still good . Not to mention that he and Nana seem to be hitting it pretty good and his kid does get along with Tsuna better than most others , so he excused himself and Tsuna saying he will be watching the kids while those two have that going on . They were red faced after the comment for some reason .

After the dinner and when both Nana and Tsuna were asleep the sushi chef came and asked some really strange questions . It was an interesting night but it did result in Tsuna and Takeshi becoming friends playing almost daily with the exception being if one of them is sick . Nana and Tsuyoshi seem to be getting closer (she even searched how one can get divorced with a consistently missing spouse) , so good for them .

Tsuna and Takeshi also got themselves another friend a little boy whit tonfas who seems to very much like order (the three of them are adorable together , he has half an album already)

Tsuna sat himself on fire accidentally (and with orange one at that) making Midora , Takeshi , Kyoya and Tsuna panic , thankfulaly Tsuyoshi came almost immediately . After Tsuyoshi got them calmer he seated them along with Nana to explain The Seven Colored Flames to them . All of them were surprised other than Kyoya who apparently had his suspicions with his family or at least a "fake baby carnivore" relative of his

After the fiasco Tsuyoshi did ask Nana if she wanted to cut contact with him after he thought Tsuna how to control his flames . Nana refused to cut contact with Tsunayoshi saying that she is already surrounded with flame users other than him such as her son , Midora , Kyoya and even her ex-husband . Her ex-husband who is responsible for why so many years seem to just merge together , why she felt as if she wasn't even awake most of the time , why she felt like a puppet . And she has memories of shortly before what Lemitsu did , she remembers a person asking if Lemitsu is sure he wants her in his state and Lemitsu answered yes without hesitation . And even if spotty she remembers the last time Lemitsu was here with that man before Tsuna started to feel like herself not in control in his own body , before that man put COLDNESS in her child causing Tsuna to constantly feel cold even under dozens of tick blankets . She members it all , and she also remembers how Tsuyoshi immediately started running towards their sons and Kyoya and Midora as soon as he felt flames .
