Kang Dooshik from Pearl Boy

Even before the side stories I never thought of Dooshik as a green flag. He wasn't/isn't but he is a dynamic character. He's funny and he and Jooha have really good chemistry. He's charming and has a really interesting backstory. Pearl Boy isn't my favorite but I really do like Dooshik.

Yeo Taejoo from Lowtide in twilight

Honestly ... he has so much rizz. Definitely a gangster and doesn't hide it. It's been joy to read his redemption arc. Euja doesn't change his personality. He's still pervy and goofy. He actively tries to be better but also messes up. That's realistic.

I love him. War crimes and all. Geneva Convention? Who is she? She should stay away from my man. I really love that he doesn't apologize for his actions. He did them and would do it again and that's something he owns up to and must live. So clever and fun. Also hot! Tan and a scar? Yeah... he's taking it.

Lee Woo Yeon/ Phillip from Love History by Willful negligence

You can get my read most stories if I find the toxic top funny and interesting. This mother fucker is hilarious. He says the wildest shit to get a rise out of Inseob. I'm sure he's 100 percent serious but also probably is tickled by his antics. He is certified crazy but I'm sorry if you said "I've tasted all your holes", I would die laughing.

TJ/ Oh Taejoon from Wetsand

Doyak really drew the sexiest character. My god. He's so delicious. I do love an obsessive bad boy and gangsters and men with scars... I'm a bird, I guess. Anyhow, I really enjoy he and Ian's backstory. I know it's toxic, but damn they look so good together.

I also prefer standalones! While there are times where I'd love to revisit my favourite worlduilding + characters, I tend to find the storytelling & character development more properly fleshed out within a standalone (comparing to books within a long series).

That's totally valid! It certainly took me some time to get into Alix E Harrow's writing - not that's it's poorly written (it's very artfully written), but it's pretty dense and the story pacing is on the slow side. Also as much as I enjoy taking notes / annotating beautifully written prose, I feel you effort required to analyse the writing 😅

Speaking of The Starless Sea, the aesthetic / vibes of the book reminds me of Taylor Swift's Midnights - very atmospheric and with a strong focus on storytelling. I've been meaning to make something showcasing parallels between songs from Midnights & sections of The Starless Sea since late 2022 (this was pushed back for various reasons), so I was very happy to post the edit today :D

hi jennifer!!! i have an arc of a tempest of tea, but i don't know if i'll get around to it before publication date 😭 i'm really intrigued by the premise, but struggled a bit with the fantasy in we hunt the flame (i struggle a lot with fantasy/have to be in a very specific mood for it)! i haven't read any of katherine arden's stuff, but have seen a lot of it on the internet over the years; maybe i'll check it out!

i feel like a common question i see on bookstagram is "what's your favorite series" and i always struggle to answer this because i am just not a series girlie! i think the few favorite series that i love (that aren't duologies) are probably either the raven cycle, or series of romance books that are set in the same universe but follow different characters so they essentially operate as standalones! i wish i was a series girlie, but i just ... am not one. i actually just put alix harrow's ten thousand doors of january on hold on libby — it might work better for me as an audiobook! sometimes i do better with fantasy via audiobook than physically reading it, for some reason.

i saw your starless sea/midnights gifset and am obsessed. i know i've told you this before but i loveeeee your gifsets so much, especially the ones where you find parallels between things!

oh this is so hard! i feel like it's easier to assign specific songs for me, rather than entire albums to books, but here goes:

normal people: i think either sam fender's seventeen going under, or noah kahan's stick season? i think both albums have a similar theme of being homesick and also home sick, which i feel like plays a big role in the plot of normal people!

For the lost reader who has stumbled onto my page, the real meaning behind the numbers in my title is that they're the numbered day of the year. So for example, 128 would be day 128 out of 365. 128, aka 8 May, aka my birthday. In the context of this year, it'll be the day I turn 30.

I thought turning 30 would be insanely hard. That at the stroke of midnight, I'd feel this overwhelming grief of growing up alone, of hitting this big 3-0 milestone without you. And even though it did hurt a little, it felt more like a sting than a stab, which surprised me.

I spent it with the people I loved, and who loved me in return. Got deliciously wasted at free-flow drinks with the girls, binged over kbbq with the family, met up with the boys for drinks (and, by the way, caught up with J who updated me about your clique), and had a really incredible meal with him. God. He is such a blessing. I am so grateful for him.

I'm not going to lie - the past weeks have been very rough. Some days, I feel perfectly fine and my mind is crystal clear. On others, the confusion hits me all over again and in an instant, it's as if I'm reliving the incident, and I feel this inane sadness overwhelm me.

Sometimes, when scrolling past my Instagram story archives in a bid to find something else, I scroll past your face and I break down. Every story that has your face is no longer a case of "here we were at ABC eating XYZ", or "here we were celebrating our 4th anniversary". Everything is marred. All the dates are no longer our own, it's relative to when you started talking to her, started seeing her, went overseas with her, started fucking her, etc ---it's now "when we were here celebrating our 4th anniversary, he had already cheated on me"; "this outing in dec was before/after he went to Bali with her". And I get so, so, so, so furious that you betrayed me like that. Why couldn't you have just broken up with me? Why did you have to cheat?

When these moments come, I try so hard to keep it in. I don't tell anyone I'm going through another depressive episode. As much as I want to, and as much as I know he'll understand and support me, I don't tell S because I know this is not his burden to bear. It is mine. And it's only something I can overcome. Plus, as much as I want to share everything with him, it isn't fair to him for him to keep hearing about my ex. And so I keep my mouth shut, I try my best to stop crying, and I pretend everything is okay.

The pain hits in spurts, and today, the wound is extra fresh. How has turning 30 become so much about you, when all I've wanted to do in the past few months is to get over you?

And here's a confession: as much as I'm convinced I'm falling in love with S, I've been so betrayed so often that I'm insanely scared of falling. I don't trust as easily, and doubt creeps into my mind every second of the day. I recognize that this is 100% me and 0% him. Poor boy. I'm so sorry I'm a mess. And so, in a bid to reassure my stupid brain that there's always a back-up plan in place (like a net below a tight rope), I've been looking up 3-room flats and drawing up floor plans of my future bachelorette home. At the very least, if things don't work (I'm also convinced part of the reason why we're not official yet is because of my insecurity and overthinking), I still have an independent big boss girl plan to rely on.

At the very least.

And as much as I'm trying my best not to hope and fall too fast, I can feel it coming, like a deer caught in the headlights.

The Drink With Me Exchange is a platonic exchange event that's happened for the past two years, so if you check out the 2022 collection and the 2021 collection (there doesn’t appear to be a fic collection on ao3 for this so I’ve just linked to the blog) you will find LOTS of sweet sweet platonic fics!!! (I haven't read all of this year's fics yet but so far they've been 10/10)

In terms of authors, check out @aromantic-enjolras' ao3 page, who is the self-confessed “this trope, but make it platonic” provider of the fandom, and @p-trichor, whose fics are ANGSTY AF but have some of the sweet sweet platonic vibes you’re looking for

(also NO I’m not just reccing them because they’re my friends......u can’t prove anything....)

Some specific fic recommendations are (I am about to create a rec list that is so skewed towards the triumvirate...): 

You Are A Revolution- God this fic is a little slice of perfection. Queerplatonic Triumvirate is the focus, so it pushes all my buttons. Also, genderqueer Enjolras!!! (he uses he/him pronouns, but I think interpreting him as not cis is very valid) The writing style is extremely emotive and very lovely, there’s something almost poetic about it. A journey through the Triumvirate’s lives as they grow up together

The Five Stages- a lil warm hug of a triumvirate fic

all those centuries ago- Okay disclaimer I haven’t read this one yet, but I was scrolling through the Triumvirate tag and saw that summary and was immediatey like HELL YESSSSSSSSSSSS

Carry On- another one I haven’t read, but I have on good authority that it’s amazing, and after seeing that summary and those tags, it jumped straight to the top of my list. Feuilly/happiness should be the top ship of this fandom, move over ExR

when you’re thinking about me (text 365)- texting fics are always a risky game, but trust me when I say that this one is hilarious. Courfeyrac tries to throw Enjolras a surprise party. 

Guided By A Beating Heart- okay, yes, maybe I'm cheating, given that the first relationship tag you see is ExR. But!!!!! BUT!!!! I think there's a pretty strong argument for this fic being about Enjolras' friendship with Les Amis, and in particular his relationship with Courfeyrac. It will break your heart, it will make you cry, but it will also water your crops and clear your skin

Sinking further into your seat when the squeals start up again. Your eyes shifting to to the right when Ally jumps in the empty seat next to you.

“You know I don’t think planes work like that.”

You tease, seeing equal annoyance on her face. You both loved Katie, the bride to be.

But her friends that seem determined to hit a new octave with their high pitched yells, not so much.

“Oh hush we’re already here they won’t say anything. Plus you didn’t just spend ten hours sitting next to a freakin squeaky toy.”

Laughing as you pushed her out of the way to grab your bag. Her grabbing hers as you pass her seat when the plane stops.

“Y/n, Ally, come on the cars waiting!”

Katie yells, still wearing a very inappropriate headband which is one of the reasons the two of us were keeping our distance until now. When we meet the group outside they immediately shove sashes over our heads. Ally was miss behaving, while I was hot mess. Rolling my eyes while she laughs.

“At lest you’re hot.”

After dinner we went to the resorts bar and took up a cabana by the pool. After a few hours of her housewife friends throwing subtle digs at you for being not being married yet.

“Clarity!”

“I’m just saying, Y/n is a pretty girl but she can’t wait to settle down forever.”

“Yeah I’d take your advice if I wanted my husband to be sleeping with his assistant.”

Ally coughs as she choked on her drink laughing while everyone else is still shocked that you even knew that. You didn’t, it was a guess but judging by her face you hit the nail on the head. As politely as you could you excused yourself saying you needed to find a bathroom, more like you needed the bar.

While you were still ranting in your head you accidentally bumped into a hard chest. Mumbling apologizes as you backed off, stopping as you looked at his face. Hello tall Italian and handsome. Taking a moment to look him over wearing all black, a few tattoos you can see, intense look in his eyes. As hot as he was there was something about him that send warnings off in your head.

“Are you lost babygirl?”

Before you could reply Ally comes running up, and starts shaking you.

“Y/n, that was amazing did you see her face!”

When you looked back for mystery man he was gone, so you let your guard down and let her drag you to the bar while telling you about the reactions you missed.

You’ve been here for five days. Just enough for you to fall in love with the place and your tan to be just right. You and Ally thankfully shared a room and while the champagne that room service brought every night that neither of you ordered creeped you out your roommate loved it.

And right now was a moment you were happy for the alcohol. The party was out at a restaurant while the food was amazing the company, not so much. Charity has made it her mission to get under your skin and while you found it funny Ally did not.

“Men don’t like women that drink Y/n”

“Shut it Karen!”

Seeing the two bicker you didn’t want it to ruin your friends bachelorette vacation. Taking yourself from equation was the best option, it was easy enough to slide away coming up with some lie about feeling sick and wanting to go back to the hotel.

Giving a few hugs to the people you actually like before taking your leave. The city was beautiful at night but you were definitely lost. While you weren’t exactly heading back immediately you’d like to at least know what direction the hotel was in.

Just as you were about to give in and call a taxi, the trashcans down the alley suddenly tipped over, your hand coming up to your chest to calm your breathing, laughing when a cat came running out. Turning around you bumped into someone for the second time this week and this man sent up red flags too.

And you should probably learn to listen to those instincts, because the next think you know everything went black.

The first thing the went through your head when you woke up was that this definitely wasn’t your hotel room or even the alley. You weren’t sure if you’d rather woken up here or back there. The room was beautiful, you can admit that. The dark floors and walls contrasted perfectly with the gold accents the biggest shower you’ve ever seen. Big double doors, wait doors! Almost tripping over the dress you were thankfully still wearing in you haste to get to the doors. Locked of course, you’ve seen enough criminal minds to know how this goes. They locked the doors but the windows however were open, Amateurs. They probably thought you wouldn’t risk the two story jump, but you’re pretty sure the climb down is better than what’s on the other side of those doors.

Pushing open the window, getting hit with the ocean breeze. The molding on the outside walls gave almost perfect steps for you to take down. You swear nothing had ever felt as good as the grass under your feet in that moment. you couldn't enjoy it for long before you heard yells, that was quick.

Gathering your dress in your hands you take off running. Looking for a way out when the voices started coming from all around you. You’re trapped, the only thing you can get to is the pool so that’s where you go.

Slowly getting into the pool to not create a splash, taking deep fast breaths until you see shadows come around the corner. Gasping once more slipping under the water keeping your back to the wall. You never thought you’d use anything you learned in those diving classes for once you were glad to be wrong.

All you heard was muffled voices, after what felt like forever they started to fade, waiting a few more seconds before coming up just to be safe. But before you could two hands reach through the water hauling you up.

Choking between screaming and gasping for air, barely noticing the man picking you up until he gently sets you down on a couch.

It’s mystery man! You can only see his back but you’re sure it’s him. Especially when he turned back. You didn’t see the towel that was around your shoulders until he finally spoke. Leaning on his arm that was resting above the very elaborate fireplace.

“Was the idea of being here so bad that you tried to kill yourself twice to get away?”

The words rolled off his tongue, thick with frustration and his Italian accent. Did he think you wanted to be here? You didn’t even know where here was. Oh if only you weren’t trapped in an episode of Dexter this situation would almost be hot.

“While it was incredibly stupid to jump out a window, I must admit I admire your dedication the pool was very smart. But if you try it again I will not be as kind.”

As his sentences went on the closer he got, step by step the more intimidating he became. He ended up only a few inches away from your face. Arms reaching the back of the couch trapping you between them.

“So next time don’t let you catch me”

Those were not the words he wanted to hear, he made that fact very clear but tugging the towel tighter around your neck and pulling you even closer as he growled.

“Don’t test me, If you run again I can always chain you to the bed. How would like that? Think you could run then?”

No you don’t, but you do think you can play nice and slip away once you gain his trust. So you kept quiet, taking your silence as cooperation he backs off back to the fireplace.

“Five years ago my life changed, I watched my father die by a bullet that was meant for the both of us. I didn’t see my life flash before my eyes I saw you, I’ve looked for you for years, no one believed you were real they said you were only my imagination, but when I saw you at the airport I knew I had to make you mine.”

You could see where everyone was coming from. You didn’t believe him either it was insane! “I’m not yours!” You couldn’t help but say. Now Y/n you really shouldn’t tell the psycho that he’s a psycho. You could hear Ally tell you now.

“I know, that’s why I’m giving you a chance to fall in love with me. Not because I forced you but because you want to. I’m giving you 365 days to love me and if in a year nothing changes I’ll let you go.”

Three words. What. The. Hell.

“I have a family, friends, a boyfriend! they’ll look for me!”

“My men have collected your things from the resort, your friends think you left to ease the tension with that woman. Your family thinks you found out your boyfriend cheated on you so you’re staying here to get over it. Y/n, if you give it a chance you’ll love me, I know you will. I’ll do everything to make you love me.”

Hey guys! The StarkerFestivals Summer Bingo has come to a close so we have info for the next event which has been named StarkerFestivals September Shuffle.

The goal for the event is to fit as many tropes into one universe as possible!

How does this work?

A calendar for September with possible prompts has been created for this event.

A text based version of the prompts will be included under the Read More cut.

Each day has two possible prompts to choose from. Participants can pick and choose the prompts from the calendar.

The number of prompts can be daily, weekly, or however many you wish to include to tailor the work to your liking. This can be posted as one single work or as multiple pieces all linked together in the same story.

(So for fanfics, this can be one completed fanfic or it can be a multi chapter fic that gets updated whenever a prompt is completed)

This also means that participants are not obligated to pick a prompt for every single day, but pick and choose whichever prompts they find appealing. The goal is to fit as many prompts into one work and to have fun with it!

What are the rules?

What if I'm not writing fanfics?

Other content is welcomed as long as they are linked in the same universe. So for example, an artist can create one art piece with as many tropes as they want, or they can create a series of art pieces like a comic. The same can be done for moodboards. As long as the prompts occur in the same universe, it'll count for this event.

This is a bit confusing… Can you give some examples of how to do this event?

Say your goal is to get every single prompt filled. You would need to plan on how to fit each prompt into a single/multi-chapter fic.

Say, your personal goal was to do the prompts you like and nothing more. You would need to plan on how to fit them all into a single/multi-chapter fic.

Maybe you spend the entire month working on a one shot, where you fit all 30 prompts into one chapter.

Maybe you write a 30 chapter fanfic, posting once a day to get each prompt.

Maybe you fit 7 prompts in one chapter, and post once a week.

Maybe you only like 2 of the prompts out of all of them. So your personal goal is to fit two tropes into a single fic by the end of the month.

Maybe you like some tropes but not others. Say you like days 1-6 but not 7 or 8. So your personal goal is to get a chapter out with days 1-6 and think about 9-30 later.

Whatever you want to do, at whatever pace and whatever challenge level you want!

Whatever you want to happen! You can skip that prompt if you want, or incorporate two prompts in one chapter, or plan to upload only one chapter that week with all the prompts. No big deal, it’s whatever you want.

2020 Year Review~

2020. Pretty unique year, don’t you think? It’s the first year since 2002 to have only two different digits in it. After 2022, this won’t happen again until 2111. Yep. Absolutely nothing more interesting than that.

Anyway! It’s time I reflect on my 2020, look back on my yearly goals and rant about things that happened to me this year. I made a post like this last year, where I went over my 2019 goals and talked about what I accomplished and what I didn’t, and it’s only fitting I do the same again this year. So, first things first, let’s look at my 2019 goals;

 Paying Off My Last Student Loan: Going down the list, I am proud to say that I FINALLY paid off all my student loans! (and not a moment too soon. The last payment I made was literally days before the first quarantine rolled out). It took me roughly 4 years on my part-time paycheck to pay off all my loans, and once I finished, I had no money to my name (literally; I had less than 1k as emergency money in case of car troubles or health issues). Heck, I’m STILL living at home as a save up for a place of my own. Finally paying off all my student loans DID activate my secret 2020 new year’s resolution, which was to adopt a cat! I did this too, literally a week later! She is the best thing that’s happened to me this entire year and I love her so much and she is the snuggliest cuddle bug I’ve ever met. I’m so happy she’s in my life now~

Put More Stuff On My Redbubble: ah ha ha ha… I thought I did this, but then I went and checked, and it turns out-! I did not. I made art I intended to go on my redbubble, but haven’t put there yet. They are all drawings of some OCs from a game I want to make, but because I haven’t progressed on making the game this year, I never got around to putting more stuff related to it on my redbubble. At the time of writing, there are 7 days left in December, so I guess I could go and put it up on my redbubble right now, but without context on where the characters are from, there wouldn’t be much point, now would there?

 Illustrate My Own Fan Fics: Another goal that I was so stoked to actually do… and then just didn’t. Gee, I wonder why I couldn’t find the energy or motivation to do it this year? Truly a conundrum. (Hey, you know what? If Ghost Switch counts as a fan fiction in a visual form, then I am doing GREAT on this goal. 2.5 years in, 1 of ~4 arcs done, and still going steady~)

 Sew At Least One Stuffed Animal: Okay, I have a valid excuse for not doing this one. I even knew which stuffed animal I wanted to make, and had the pattern drawn out and everything, but I had no money for materials because I had just paid off my student loans. And then, by the time I did have enough money again, quarantine was in full effect and I couldn’t go out to the fabric store. I’m still trying my best to stay out of public places even if the rules are laxer now, because I don’t want to catch the plague even if everyone in my goddamn city thinks and acts like the problem is over already. Even if they’re all wearing masks, even if they’re staying 6 feet apart, I still don’t want to risk it. I will stay inside until health experts give the all clear, and when that day comes, then I will buy some fleece and make a plush.

 Make An Enamel Pin: I ACTUALLY DID THIS ONE. TWICE! Halfway through quarantine, I was feeling anxious and depressed about my job and how they were planning to have me work with the public despite climbing infection rates and positive covid cases. I didn’t quit then, but in a desperate move to try and become self-sufficient, I went to madebycooper and made two enamel pins based on some butterfly dragons I drew last year. They’re on my etsy store now! I even went out of my way to open a P.O. box just to start a small business! I haven’t sold a single pin yet, and I’m actually really nervous to sell my first because I don’t trust the efficiency of the postal system thanks to the actions of the GOP that really screwed them over this year!  Read One Book A Month: I did this! With dragon books I bought a couple years back! In fact, I read FOURTEEN dragon books, and still have more books for next year to read! The 14 books I read this year were:

 To be honest, I had read The Red Dragon Codex years ago when it first came out, but completely forgotten what it was about. I remembered liking it, and I knew the reading level was on the lower side, but the whole dragon codex series was pretty good! So far, the Silver dragon codex was my favorite, and black dragon codex was probably the worst! Hatching Magic was also really slow and bad and had plot points that went nowhere, but the book was written in the 80s, so I don’t know what I expected. The Dealing with Dragons series was very charming and great for the most part, save for one line in the last book that really rubbed me the wrong way, and all the Wings of Fire Books go above and beyond in this third arc. The second legends book could be a little tighter, though (sky and wren are the best duo and I want a book solely about them, but I honest to god do not care about leaf and ivy’s stories.)

 Write one Page of any story every day/ complete at least one fic: I… did this? Okay, I kinda cheated near the end of the year. I was keeping up the one page a day thing for the first four months, but then the world went to shit and my schedule and habits got disrupted and I fell off my good track record. I completed 7 out of roughly 12 one-shots I had planned for this year (my goal WAS supposed to be one short a month, but… you know how it happens) I kept trying to catch up on this goal all year, but the days kept piling up…. Until November hit. I managed to write over 250 pages for Nanowrimo, and I consider this goal a win. 365 pages of fiction in total, which averages out to about one a day~. SHUT UP IT COUNTS.

 Learn Python or C# for the game I want to make: Another goal I didn’t have the mental energy to commit to this year. Truly a mystery to where all our willpower went in 2020.

 Fully Finish Scripting Ghost Switch: still haven’t done this one yet! The Snowdin arc is completely planned, but I just haven’t gotten around to getting the other areas. I’m not worried, though. I know all the major plot points I gotta hit, it’s just weaving them together in a way that flows nice is the final task. I’m not too worried though. I don’t expect to finish the Snowdin arc for another year and a half, at the bare minimum.

 And my last goal of 2020, Boost My Patreon. I did this at the beginning of the year, but then very intentionally stopped about a third of the way through. It didn’t sit right with me to tell you guys to donate to me when suddenly EVERYONE was financially strained from layoffs or being furloughed. I told my patrons the same, and if you ever need to stop donating to me to take care of yourself first, then by all means, please do. I would feel much better knowing you’re using your money to see yourself fed and housed instead of given to me (where it is pretty much only used to buy gas for my car, honestly)

 Welp! That was all my goals for 2020! I achieved 4 out of 10 goals plus 1 secret goal! Pretty much the same ratio as last year, but now this time I can blame all my failures on the pandemic! I don’t feel so bad about myself anymore~

 ON TO 2021!

 I have 11 goals for the new year, again some rolled over from this list, and some from even older years. They are, in no particular order;

 Read 12 new books (roughly 1 book a month)

Finish the first draft of 2019’s Nanowrimo project and rewrite it

Script TDV

Finish Scripting Ghost Switch

Build A Comic Buffer

Sew 1 Stuffed Animal

Finish 1 Song Comic

 Now to go into depth on each one, more for my own sake, really. I want to know exactly what I have planned for each goal this year, and sometimes just looking at a short list doesn’t capture all the smaller details.

 1)Read 12 new books. Same as last year! I The only difference is I might not be able to make it all dragon-related books. (I try my hardest not to buy from amazon anymore, but half-price-books doesn’t always have the obscure stuff I’m looking for)

 2)Finish 2019’s nanowrimo project. If you read my 2019 year reflection, you’ll notice I said I wanted to do some original writing. And I did! The story I wrote for nanowrimo back then was a story I’ve been toying with since 2017, but it was only last year I finally got pen to paper. Now, you may find it odd that the keyword says “finish”. You may think, “but isn’t that what you’re supposed to do for nanowrimo?” and to that I say, WRONG! I wrote 50k words for nanowrimo, but the draft was only about halfway complete. I was kinda discouraged about what I had written last year, because I didn’t like how it was coming out, but I did manage to get it half done. Now it’s time for me to bite the bullet and just finish the thing so I can finally revise it and make it into something I DO like. (It’s still gonna be hella long, tho. That’s what I get for trying to write an epic fantasy, I guess.)

 3)Script TDV. TDV is the abbreviation of the game I want to make. I… still need to do so much for this project OTL… In addition to getting the story solidified, I still need to draw art and game assets, and learn how to code for it, both of which are no small task. I keep having some sort of new year’s goal related to this on my list, and every year I just don’t hit this one. Will 2021 be different?

 4)Finish Scripting Ghost Switch. (Or at the very least, get the waterfall arc completely written out). I have a plan to break this down into simpler steps, by focusing on just one arc for a month or two. Every major arc has 2 to 3 parts, broken up by flashbacks, and if I can just finish one section a month, then I should have the entire thing scripted by the end of the year. It’s not a difficult pace, but seeing if I stick with it will be the real challenge, as it is will all my goals it seems.

 5)Build a Comic Buffer: I’m actually working on this one right now! Since I paid off my last loan and got a new job this year, my current Patreon goals are kind of out of date. They had all been centered around me paying off that last loan, and working towards full-time employment, but those are both completed now! So instead, I would love to get to a place where my patrons could read pages at least a week ahead, and to do that, I need to build a buffer. And since I’m working 5 full days a week now, I can’t afford to fall behind. But you can’t fall behind if you constantly stay ahead! I would like to have… a 10 to 12 page buffer. That’s roughly 3 months’ worth of pages to always have on hand in case I get swamped with work, or something. Right now I currently have a buffer of 3, which will cover me for half a January, which is better than not having anything at all, but still not the best. (ultimately, I would love to have a buffer so big, I could queue them up for the whole year. Wouldn’t that be something?)

 6) Sew one stuffed animal: same as last year. ASSUMING the plague gets under control in 2021, I don’t expect to get to this goal until the summer at the earliest.

 7)Finish 1 song comic: I have 7 song comics planned. One is a gift, one possibly for wandersong, one is a collab that’s currently in the works, but I’m waiting on a friend to do their part before I can continue mine, 2 are UT related, and 2 (well, technically 3, but one is the collab) are KH related. It’s one of the UT ones that will probably get finished, if I’m being honest. It’s completely story boarded, and now I just need to ink and color it. I would like to get it done for UT’s 6th birthday, since I made a song comic on the fly for the anniversary this year, and it was fun, and I’d like to do it again! So, look forward to that next september~

 8) Make another enamel pin: I have a dolphin design I’d like to make because dolphins are cute, if not little murder machines. (need to save up some expendable income first, tho. THESE THINGS AIN’T CHEAP TO MAKE.)

 9 and 10) start and finish 2 original short comics: I’ve got some comic ideas I want to do, but I need to get them written out first. I don’t think either would be too long. Each maybe a couple “episode’s” length, if envisioned on a website like webtoons or tapas. They’d both be heavy in allegory, but not overly drawn out (hopefully)

 11)And lastly, Finish the 5 remaining one-shots I had planned for this year but never got around to. I’m going to try to write one every other month. Pure self-indulgent shipping fluff. If I finish these 5, then maybe I’ll ask other people for more prompts and ideas, which I’ve never done before. We’ll see how it goes~

 Also, Like last year, I’d like to look at everything that’s happened to me this year, though to be honest, I’m not sure how much I remember/how accurate it’ll be. God, I don’t even remember what January was like. Who was I back then? Who were we all back then? I guess I’ll start my yearly retrospective in march because, heh, god we ALL know what started happening in march.

 Firstly, I paid off my last student loan! Then a week later on March 18th, I drove half an hour out of my city to adopt a cat and I love her and it was the best day of this year for me. Spring break is just beginning this weekend, but the attendance at the zoo is shockingly low this year. Apparently, a lot of people watch the news, and they’re all taking precautions about social distancing. I wasn’t too disappointed. Fewer people at the zoo, the easier my job is for me. I was looking forward to getting some free overtime on spring break, since I’m broke after paying off that loan, and I’m a cat parent now and have a furry child to feed. Monday rolls around. My manager calls me and tells me that the zoo is going into lockdown until further notice. I worry for the birds I take care of, but understand it’s for everyone’s safety.

 For two months I sleep in and watch way too much YouTube. I join a couple writing discords. I have nightmares about my birds escaping their enclosure and I dreamed one of the security guards I really like at the zoo gets covid and has to go to the ER. I woke up really upset.

 I started and finished BBS for the first time. I also replayed and finished KH2 final mix for the first time. It had been about 5 years since I last played KH2 before my PS2 died, and it was like coming home~ I also finished tearaway, and played and beat Ryme for a second time (which I can’t remember if I did that last year, but it was a fun experience regardless)

 Mid-June, and I’m allowed to start going back to work, be it on reduced hours. The zoo is still closed to the public, but I’m loving it! I get to work with full-time keepers and do full-time keeper things. It’s so much fun not having to deal with the public. August starts to creep up and there’s a rumor that the zoo will be opening to the public again, which I’m not stoked about. I don’t want to go back to standing in one exhibit all day, talking to guests who don’t listen to the rules or to me. 2 of my younger coworkers (who had both only been there a couple of months) get chosen for full-time positions, while I get passed up which really pisses me off. My other 2 coworkers quit when they think we might be reopening because they cannot risk catching the virus due to at-risk family. I am now the last keeper in the interactive bird exhibit.

 I keep working, the zoo slowly opens, but with me as the only interpreter in our interactive bird exhibit, we can’t open because I can’t run the entire exhibit by myself. So my exhibit stays closed. September comes and goes, and then October starts. Now there is more serious talk of opening my exhibit before the end of the year because the zoo expects to bring in larger crowds for the Christmas lights event in November/December. I ask if I get hazard pay or health insurance since I’m doing full-time hours until they hire more staff. They say no.

 I immediately start searching for a new job feeling incredibly indignant/hurt/slighted/insulted/used/abused/ALL the negative feelings at my job. I had been there for 4 years, but never got a chance to work full time, while the two newest hires who had only been there 2 months both got moved up. I can’t help but feel they were holding one mistake I made two years ago against me and never wanted to give me a chance. (that, or they knew I was reliable when it came to showing up for work in such a volatile position that sees a lot of new faces, and they didn’t want to bother going through the process of hiring someone new) I don’t want to risk my life working around guests who don’t wash their hands and don’t properly distance. I don’t want to gamble with my health when they won’t offer me health insurance because I’m part time.

 Mid October, I get an interview for a full time job and get hired on the spot. I peace out at the zoo 2 weeks later, literally 3 days before they planned to open my exhibit to the public. It was a close call for me to escape before they opened to the public (and pettiness was only partially the reason I dipped out so close to opening). Sorry new hires who are now in charge of the bird feeding exhibit. I taught you the best I could in the short time I had. If the managers are struggling with what to do with one less person, I can’t say I feel bad. I can only hope they delayed opening/closed you down again for your own safety. You are not lightbulbs. I really hope the higher ups stop considering you as replaceable as one. Will I go back to the zoo to visit? Probably. But not for a year at least.

 I started my new job the very next day after I quit the zoo, and have been there ever since, (which isn’t that long yet, tbh. Christmas day was my 2 month anniversary). It’s full time, but it’s also a small business, and everyone’s hours this year have been on the short side due to the plague. I understand, though. They don’t want us to work if they can’t afford to pay us. Everyone is nice enough, though some people smoke and it’s hard to avoid them with how frequently we have to go in and out, and I really don’t want to get lung cancer, sorry not sorry, please and thank you. Also, with such a small team, gossip is certainly harder to go undetected, so it’s a relief knowing people don’t talk behind one another’s backs.

 I participated and beat my 4th nanowrimo in a row, I made TWO apple crisps on thanksgiving, and made baklava on Christmas and both of these recipes were my first time making them, and they both came out adequately! I voted the first day of early voting, and I did an art trade/collab with two of my friends for my birthday! (normally we would have done monthly “art days” where we get together and do art projects for fun because we’re adults and we can spend our time together however we want, but the plague said otherwise this year) We drew pokemon and it was fun! (hopefully I can show you all the results soon. At the time of writing, I’m still waiting for the last two colored parts to get back to me)

 I reached 100 pages on my undertale comic, and finish the first arc out of…! (im not sure. It’s either going to be 4 or 5, I haven’t decided yet)

 Over all, I managed to stay healthy as far as I know. I wasn’t as productive as I wanted to be this year, but then again, who was? (don’t answer that. I don’t need that kind of comparison in my life right now)

 Will 2021be any better? Honestly? I don’t think so. Not right away, at least. Just because a new year is about to start does not mean the slate is completely wiped clean. The change of the calendar year doesn’t magically make all our current problems disappear. Covid will still be here and cases will still climb when January starts. Small business will still be strained when the month rolls over, police will still go on murdering innocent civilians and getting away scot free, amazon and disney will still be monopolizing all consumer goods and media, and I can’t help but feel like there’s an impending shit show about to go down on inauguration day. I do hope things will get better, though. It’ll be arduous and unpleasant, but I do hope things will improve, because sometimes hoping is all you can do.

K-Drama (Feb-March 2020)

1. 365: Repeat the Year

This drama is gold! I initially watched it because of Nam Ji Hyun and turns out this drama is better than I expected! If you’re looking for k-drama with an unpredictable storyline, this is the drama for you. So many plot twists. Like, every episode always has a way to amaze me. Great plot served with good cinematography.

2. When the Weather is Fine

Just by seeing the stills and trailers I got the impression that this drama gives beautiful and warm vibes. I was right. This drama is pleasant to eyes and also, heart. Although, honestly I wasn’t really impressed with the first episode. But I gave it another try and totally not regret it. This drama is so heartwarming!! The story pace maybe slow but that’s its charm. Through that, we get to see the process of character development, we get to empathize with the characters and understand them more deeply, and we get to see how both lead characters grow pure feelings toward another. It’s so beautiful I want to cry.

3. The World of the Married

Watched it because I was curious why many people talk about it. Now I know why. God this drama is so intense. Intriguing how this drama portrayed marriage and love affairs. Makes me looking forward for how their story would resolved. Don’t watch it if you can’t stand people who cheated on their spouses.

(update: i wanted to finish it, i did, but i couldn’t because i literally had headache every time i watch this lol. If you finish watching it, I salute you.)

4. Find Me in Your Memory

A love story about a guy who remembers and can’t forget everything and a woman who lost her important memories? Sign me up. I like it because the story is easy to follow, and the lead characters’ interactions are entertaining. Also, not only this drama gives off fun vibes, but another time this drama is dark. Therefore, it’s interesting to watch it.

5. A Piece of Your Mind

Here it is, another gem kdrama. The plot is slow-paced and many people may find it hard to stay motivated to watch the first two episodes. But this drama gets more interesting in each episode. The story is touching and the soundtracks are absolutely beautiful. If you love to watch the process of how love story grows, this is it. However, this drama has to be shorten into 12 eps due to low ratings. Makes me sad because I personally think this drama deserve more appreciation :(

6. My Holo Love

Just like Find Me In Your Memory, this drama is easy to follow. Actually, this drama reminds me a lot to Are You Human Too? because in some aspects, it has similiarity with that drama. But of course, it’s different. This drama is cute and tense in its own way. Perfect for binge-watch.

Day 4/365

Prompt: “The king is missing.”

Genre: Period Fic set in old Korea, angst, fluff

Summary: King!Hoseok RightHandMan!Namjoon Princess!Reader. The King disappears the night before his wedding and Namjoon and Y/N fear that he may have discovered their secret romance. It would be considered treason and Namjoons head could be in a basket. Little did they know, the monarchy was about to be flipped on its head.

It was tomorrow. The day your father would finally have his way and have you married to the King of Korea. You couldn’t fault Hoseok. He was your father’s first choice to be the man you wed due to his status being the highest of them all but, he was also kind and fun and genuine.  But you didn’t love him. 

No. You wish you did. It would make your life a lot easier but, spending more and more time in his palace to get acquainted before the marriage meant spending time with his staff too, especially since Hoseok seemed to spend all his time in the palace library. More specifically though, you spent most of your time with his second in command Namjoon.

The two of you had been meeting in secret for weeks after dark, knowing all too well that the grand palace you had created in your minds for the two of you, even more magical and impressive than the one in which you were a day away from being bound to forever, would crumble down to ruins once you and Hoseok were married. 

At first, you had been meeting because you got along with him and he felt safe and he had helped you massively with the homesickness you had felt when you first arrived at the palace but, it wasn’t long before your feelings grew. You hadn’t known love before, maybe that was why you hadn’t put up much of a fight about having an arranged marriage but now... you felt differently.

Now, you had known love. It had been confirmed last night under the moonlight on the pier where you and Namjoon had confessed passionately to each other before sharing a forbidden kiss.

Now, on the evening of your final day unmarried, you rubbed your lips together and closed your eyes, remembering the way his lips had felt and feeling butterflies upon hearing his beautiful words to you float around your head like a gymnast’s ribbon through the air. You stayed like that for a while before you were interrupted by the door bursting open, hinges almost snapping at the force.

It was the maid who looked after you here, looking frantic, panting heavily as if she had sprinted to you.

“Ma’am, the king is missing.” She says through her deep breaths. You jaw went slack in an instance.

Missing? You break the puzzled eye contact with her when you see a figure standing just behind her in the doorway. Namjoon. He looks at you the same way you look at him. Confused, worried and panicked.

What if Hoseok had found out about the two of you, he could execute Namjoon for this, it would be considered treason. 

You try not to let your thoughts spiral any further as you stand up, feigning certainty and confidence as you announce: “Well, then, we must look for him. Gather all the staff and hand them lanterns. We will find him.”

You walk past Namjoon, ignoring him as you worry he may be in extreme danger because of you.

Storming out the palace gates, leading your small army of palace staff, with a lantern of your own, you walk through the village hoping for a glimpse of any sign of him as everyone splits off on their own search. Villagers who had been decorating the streets with a beautiful shade of deep royal purple bowed as you rushed past them. You offered them a small one back but in your hurry, you’re well aware of how arrogant you may seem.

Before long, all the palace staff were hunting around, eager to find him but it was night, and the area was so vast, he could be anywhere. Namjoon had been the only person to stay at the palace in case His Majesty were to come back.

You had been running around for hours looking in every alley, venturing into neighbouring fields and even a nearby forest but there was not even a hint of where he had gone. You had grown weary by now and the feeling of hopelessness had long since settled in and, when the sun had begun to rise, signalling the beginning of the day you should be wed, you groggily made your way back to the palace.

It took you a while due to your fatigue, but eventually you entered past the towering golden gates and back into the palace you had been learning to call ‘home’. To your surprise, you were met at the door by a smiling Namjoon.

Smiling? He wasn’t worried he could face death as a consequence of his involvement with you? He outstretched a hand once you were near and wordlessly walked you to the grand ceremony room in the palace. You couldn’t mutter a word. Half because of how exhausted you were and half because of the strange happenings that you couldn’t quite make sense of.

Upon entering the expansive room with incredibly intricate artwork lining each wall, you see the villagers that had gathered there holding their breath, turning to face you, as you now realised you were holding hands with Namjoon, your fiance’s right hand man. He led you to the end of the room, as people began whispering to each other, where there was a small podium for announcements to the town’s people. He stood there and asked everyone to settle down. A hush blanketed the room. You could hear a pin drop. It was eerie. You flicked your eyes between each person in the room as they all looked at you as if expecting you to have an answer for what was happening. Why you were stood before them in a muddy gown, hair in a state, on the morning of your wedding. They didn’t know that you needed the answer to that even more than they did.

When you hear the sound of footsteps through the hall edging closer and closer to the room in which everyone was occupied, you had a feeling you were about to get your answer. 

Sure enough, in walks Hoseok, dressed smartly, but not like a King. Similar to the way Namjoon dressed, not in the royal silks but silk of fine quality nonetheless. He walked towards you both, smiling.

Smiling? Him too? You weren’t sure what you were expecting but it definitely wasn’t this. All you can do is watch helplessly as he stands before the confused crowd and prepares to address them.

“My people,” he starts, “you may wonder what happened last night. I did cause rather a lot of chaos around here, I believe, with my disappearance. I felt as though my time had come to be honest. One does not get into a position like this without some sort of deceit to lead them there. This throne has not been an honest one for centuries. You see, before my father’s death, your King before me, he had told me something that made my bones feel as though they were rotting with lies. You see, as a boy, he used to tell me a story, about a good King who was wrongfully murdered and the throne taken from his family. He used to warn me to sleep with one eye open and be wary of everyone around me. What my father told me, on his deathbed, was that it had been my ancestors who played the role of the murderers in that story.” 

A chorus of gasps sounded through the crowd. Hoseok raises a single, powerful finger and it silences the room once more.

“My father was not a bad man, nor was my grandfather, they were loved by this country. But they were sheep, following those who came before them aimlessly, being told they were meant to be King and believing it. My father told me that also, but I will not continue the deceit any further. You see, I have been spending an awful lot of time in the palace library as of late. I have been reading through diaries of those who came before me, trying to piece together the mystery I was confronted with. I had an epiphany of sorts; my life’s work was not to lead you all, as I had grown up believing it to be. No, it was to find the rightful heir to this throne who would become your new leader.” 

He now gestures Namjoon to stand next to him. 

“After my weeks of searching. I found out the family name and I traced the family tree from then to present day. As I said, my father wasn’t a bad man. He always told me to keep Namjoon here close, ever since we were young boys. I think he had figured it out too but was not man enough to accept the truth.”

Hoseok beckons a maid to the podium, she carries royal silks of gold. The ones Hoseok would have been wearing for the wedding. She gently places them above Namjoons head as he crouches slightly to allow her to put them on and adjust them. She finishes by handing him a golden staff with a ruby the size of a child’s head on the end. Head to toe, he was covered in gold, looking most imperial.

“It is my pleasure to hand you over to your rightful King.”

Hoseok bows to Namjoon and backs away to stand next to you, making eye contact as you flash him a subtle smile. Namjoon stands proudly in front of his people as they bow to him, embracing his role, before he dismisses everyone, including the staff so it was just the three of you in the room.

“What-” You begin.

“You’re confused.” Hoseok interrupts, “And understandably so. Let me explain. I came back here while everyone was searching. I had run away because I was unsure of my next move after putting the final piece of the puzzle together just yesterday. If I married you before telling the truth then you would suffer because of it, and I have grown to care for you. But it seemed like there wasn't going to be time to announce it formally. Then, I went for a walk to clear my head and I saw you two there on the pier. I shouldn’t have listened into your conversation, I apologise, but I’m glad I did. It pushed me to do the right thing. You two can be happy together now, and I... I’ll figure something out”

“You’re not going to be my right hand man?”

Hoseok looked at Namjoon as if he can’t quite believe the proposal he was just offered.

“If you’ll have me?”

“Of course. We have always been inseparable, why stop now?”

“Ok, hold on,” it’s your turn to interrupt now, still confused, “Namjoon weren’t you surprised?”

“Oh gosh no, I’ve always known. My family has always known. But we were content with the lives we lived and I suppose, through the generations, our families went from being mortal enemies to the closest of friends. Besides, I always had a feeling Hoseok would be the one to right his family’s wrongs.”

You opened your mouth to speak but nothing came out. How could the two people in the highest positions of power in Korea be so humble? Hoseok sensed you were unable to articulate and so filled the silence.

“Well, Y/N, Namjoon, haven’t you guys got a wedding to be at?”

For the first time, Namjoon looked confused now too. Hoseok continued on.

“Well, you’re the King and Y/N is here to marry the King, who she just so happens to love.”

He really had heard your moonlit conversation on the pier the night before. You looked at Namjoon with a look of certainty, showing him you wanted to marry him and you were relieved to see he was doing the same.

Hoseok snapped you both out of the moment with a clap. “Two hours until the ceremony, you better hurry.”

And so you did. Two hours later, you walked down the aisle, with Namjoon in his royal attire on the other side, looking rather handsome as he beamed a radiant smile at you. Hoseok, standing beside Namjoon catches your eye as he raises a hand to his face to quickly flick away a tear, hoping to go unnoticed, before he looks at you with pride. He had righted the wrong that had plagued the country unknowingly for centuries. Everything was just as it should be as you stand opposite Namjoon, staring into his eyes, as you bind yourselves together as King and Queen for eternity.

Speaking of 2024 albums, Kali Uchis' Orquideas came out today & I found it very refreshing - normally I listen less to R&B / Latin Pop albums in full but Kali's new LP is very cohesive! As of upcoming music releases, because most of my favourite artists released new albums last year, I find the 2024 release schedule considerably more quiet. Nevertheless, I'm looking forward to new albums from: Bleachers, Faye Webster, Allie X, and Madi Diaz!

Also fingers crossed that we'll also get new music from Sabrina Carpenter 🙏

As of fantasy books, I currently have two physical books with me: Starling House (Alix E Harrow) and The Tethered Mage (Melissa Caruso). It's been a challenging time for me to read books electronically (the only device I electronically read on is the same device that I use for academia), so I really like being able to unplug & read something physically 💖

And ahh The Starless Sea is a perfect winter read ❄️ I rarely re-read books myself, but this is one of the few books that I revisit from time to time! My copy isn't with me right now as I'm still abroad, but I'm working on an edit inspired by this book so I've been slowly re-reading it on my computer.

Amongst the upcoming book releases, which new books / series are you most looking forward to reading? And do you tend to prefer standalones or series?

i haven't listened to kali uchis' new album yet, but i keep seeing these stunning vinyl pressings for it in one of the vinyl groups i'm in! i'll probably listen to it at some point for my 365 albums in 365 days challenge. i didn't realize allie x has a new album coming out; i'm so excited! and new bleachers so soon. i'm really hoping we'll get new sabrina music, although i'm not looking forward to fighting for tickets if she does another tour.

i read and didn't love 10 thousand doors of january, but i've heard really good things about alix harrow / a lot of my friends like her stuff, so maybe i'll give her another shot! i've also been struggling with reading books electronically as of late (although i don't read on the same device i use for work), which is why a bunch of my arcs have piled up 😵‍💫 i haven't actually touched the starless sea in a few days; i feel like annotating takes so much more time / effort / energy (which ... makes sense) but i'm hoping to get back to it soon 🤍 i can't wait to see your edit!!!

My Top 10 K-Dramas of 2020 - What’s Yours?

2020 has ended after feeling like it was never ending and K-Dramaland has once again brought us so many goodies this year. As per our blog’s tradition [For 2019 faves click here], below are my Top 10 favs of the year (my faves in alphabetical order so it might not be yours so please don’t judge). (For our blog’s 2020 music ratings, click here!)

My only specific criteria is that the show must have had started in 2020 to be considered a 2020 series but like last year, I have allowed one drama starting very late in 2019 to make the list.

Without further ado, check the list below!

Crash Landing On You (tvN/Netflix)

While it started in December 2019, “Crash Landing On You” is certainly the Rom-Com of the year that swept the world by storm. It was possibly the K-Drama most people knew about and everyone rejoiced when the leads Hyun Bin and Son Yejin admitted to being a couple on 1 January 2021. 

One might say “Crash Landing On You” has generic plot - two people from vastly different worlds meeting through a crazy accident and developing feelings as a result, the choice of using North and South Korea as the two worlds provided unique social commentary and the opportunity for lots of interesting shenanigans. This is not the first series to feature a romance between a North and South Korean lead (see 2012’s “The King 2 Hearts”, which was also stellar), but it is definitely a more light-hearted take which is fun to watch. Additionally, the series is filled with fleshed out and lovable side characters.

While North Korean refugees interviewed by media outlets point out that the typical North Korean captain would not have the looks of Hyun Bin, most of them agree that the production team did their research as the everyday life of typical North Koreans were recreated quite accurately - from the types of furniture and household appliances they use, to the type of K-Dramas they watch in secret.

If you enjoy a good Rom-Com and an interesting premise, this is the K-Drama for you!

Extracurricular (Netflix)

Being a Netflix only series with no counterpart on Korean television, “Extracurricular” was able to explore the dark side of South Korean youth life which is not discussed on traditional South Korean media platforms. We are thrown into the life of a nerdy high school student played by Kim Dong Hee, who is actually effectively abandoned by his family and making ends meet secretly as an illegal prostitution ring mastermind.

The story unravels as the star student played by So Minhee discovers the schemes of Kim Dong Hee’s character and begins to blackmail him. Not to give too many spoilers, but it will prove difficult to balance his double life and the whole journey is captured superbly by the main cast’s stellar acting.

If you are a fan of dark and realistic teen dramas, this is the series for you!

Hospital Playlist (tvN/Netflix)

The team behind the “Reply” series and “Prison Playbook” returns with a few familiar faces so we all knew when the trailers dropped that we were in for a treat. As expected, the fabulous acting of the main cast, the wonderful storylines and also medically accurate procedures (according to my doctor friends), combined to make “Hospital Playlist” one of the most endearing dramas of the year.

Set in the fictional Yulje Medical Centre, we follow the lives of 5 doctors who met in college and their respective medical teams. Jo Jung-suk acts as a prankster and fun dad who is also a genius doctor. Yoo Yeon-seok plays a pediatric surgeon who is dead set on becoming a priest. Jung Kyung-ho acts as a cardiologist who seems cold-hearted (pun intended), but of course isn’t really. Kim Dae-myung plays a gynaecologist who is a mummy’s boy and has family drama galore. And finally Jeon Mi-do completes the set as a neurosurgeon who is lowkey the only adult in the friend group and who everyone wants to be when they grow up.

The drama throws us into the day to day runnings in the hospital without too much introductions and it actually made the characters all the more real because it was like we were just casually witnessing their everyday lives. The realisms of the show is furthered by the fact that even side characters like nurses and medical students have meaningful storylines of their own. We honestly cannot wait for Season 2 to air in May 2021!

Itaewon Class (JTBC/Netflix)

A remake of a popular Webtoon, “Itaewon Class” is a feel-good David and Goliath story where the male lead played by Park Seojun goes on a journey to avenge his father and chooses to do so without bending his morals at any point in time and making many friends along the way.

This series stood out by providing very diverse lead characters including a sociopath, a former convict, a trans woman, an illegitimate son and a Blasian trying to find acceptance in South Korea. All their stories highlight the different social issues and the stigmas many face navigating through life and is touching and relatable in many ways.

If you love a show with a positive social message, this is the show for you!

Sweet Home (Netflix)

Another webtoon remake by Netflix, “Sweet Home” follows a group of survivors in an apartment complex after all hell breaks loose in South Korea, as people begin to transform into monsters based on their greatest fears and regrets. 

Every character has interesting backstories that are slowly revealed as they try to survive together, while battling monsters that are generated by the team behind many Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbusters. The main cast led by Song Kang, Lee Jin Wook, Lee Siyoung and Lee Dohyun also acted extremely well, with Lee Siyoung grabbing a lot of attention with her ripped superhero physique. Kim Namhee also had a breakout performance as the survivor who favours a Korean sword and hopefully would continue to get more roles following years playing minor characters.

If you enjoy apocalypse thrillers that explore human nature, you would love “Sweet Home”!

The Uncanny Counter (OCN/Netflix)

Okay, Netflix is really funding all the webtoon adaptions because “The Uncanny Counter” is yet another one. Currently the highest rated OCN drama in the cable channel’s history, this webtoon adaption follows a disabled orphaned teenage boy who gains superpowers and joins a demon-banishing team of other super-powered beings (who own a noodle shop on the side) called the Counters, while the mystery of his parents’ death plays a key role in the story.

This somewhat cliché set-up is done in a fun and enjoyable way and it is great to see the talented Jo Byung Gyu finally cast as a male lead! Kim Sejeong has also further improved in her acting and is a loveable badass in this series. 

If you love a ghost/spirit busting mystery and just the superhero genre in general, you would enjoy “The Uncanny Counter”!

VIP (SBS)

“VIP” is a drama following a luxury brand’s VIP service team. While it has office drama, intrigue and power plays in almost every episode, it is arguably more of a drama about womanhood than anything else. With 4 female leads, 3 of whom are in their late 30s, the series accurately depicts the concerns women face reaching that age, whether they are married or unmarried, with children or not. 

Jang Nara plays a successful business woman and a co-worker to her husband played by Lee Sang Yoon. Born in a privileged background with a seemingly loving husband, all seems well until she has suspicions of her husband having an affair. This drives her to investigate and through her findings, she instead uncovers more stories of her other female co-workers, like the rumour-tainted but very cool section chief played by Lee Chungah and the stressed and depressed mother of two played by Kwak Sunyoung.

If you want a spicy office drama that also has meaningful discussions about working women in South Korea, VIP is the best drama for that!

The World of the Married (JTBC)

Overtaking JTBC’s “Sky Castle” to be highest rated cable TV K-Drama of all time, this 2020 production also by JTBC is a remake of BBC series “Doctor Foster” but highly localised to fit the Korean narrative.

Kim Hee-ae plays a successful doctor with a film director husband and a teenage son. Her life seems picture perfect until she discovers her husband’s infidelity. But unlike in “VIP”, where the female lead actually bonds with other women along the way, Kim Hee-ae’s character would quickly learn that she was in fact betrayed by everyone around her - they all knew her husband was cheating and have been pretty supportive of this whole affair.

While highly dramatised, the suspicions of the husband’s infidelity, the discovery, the subsequent divorce and schemes for revenge are all done tastefully and is a reason why it struck a chord with the general public, especially married women watching the show.

If you love mess and chaos and seeing douchebags destroyed, “World of the Married” is the perfect drama for you!

18 Again (JTBC)

JTBC really has a knack for remakes. This remake of the movie “17 Again” starring Zac Efron is also adapted seamlessly to fit Korean culture and social issues e.g. teen pregnancy, divorce, women’s careers after being a parent and parent-child relations. 

Kim Haneul and Yoon Sanghyun truly acted out the energy of a long-married couple and Lee Dohyun did extremely well in encapsulating Yoon Sanghyun’s mannerism as his de-aged counterpart. This boy is truly on a roll this year (he is also in “Sweet Home”). Also, the younger cast of this show were also very likeable and well flesh-outed and by the end of the series you are rooting for all of them to do well.

If you love a slice of life drama with a little fantastical element, you would love “18 Again”!

365: Repeat the Year (MBC)

Based on the Japanese novel “Repeat” by Kurumi Inui, “365 Days: Repeat the Year” follows this social experiment where 10 individuals are given the opportunity to travel 1 year back in time. As all 10 individuals try to remedy their mistakes and become better people, the experiment takes a sinister turn as the time-travellers begin to die one after another.

The veteran detective played by Lee Joohyuk and the mystery webtoon artist played by Nam Jihyun team up together with other time travellers to uncover the secrets behind travelling back in time and learn about the past lives of everyone chosen for the project.

If you enjoy a well-thought out time-travelling series that involves some alternate reality battle royale shenanigans, this is the series for you!

Kingdom (Season 2) (Netflix): The ancient zombie drama is back and still as strong as ever - one of the best zombie series on air right now.

Start-Up (tvN/Netflix): Loveable rom-com set in the start-up world in South Korea with one of the most hotly debated love triangles in this year’s K-Drama world.

Hi Bye, Mama! (tvN/Netflix): When a woman reincarnates to meet her husband and child again 5 years after her tragic death, only to find he has since remarried.
