Ricky asked if I would bring the excavator over and make the more permanent repair. The cheap fix is to drain the tank, and dig out a ways to see if they installed a splitter, then from that point snake out the line to see if there are any clogs. The more expensive fix is to just dig up and replace the old system. That’s what I did. Told him as much as I would love to, I can’t. He lives in a community within the city limits. If I did and got caught, he would get a heft fine, lose his homeowners’ insurance and then be made to hire a “certified” contractor at a considerable cost. Better to forego the fine, the loss of insurance and just pay the man. I recommended the added expense of going gravel-less. It costs nearly twice as much as it does to go with gravel, but you don’t have to pre-stage the gravel and deal with leftover gravel in your yard tearing up your lawn mower blades for the next few years. He is not a happy man. Told him this is exactly why I chose to live so far out. No nosy neighbors and “government” isn’t nearly as actively interested in what goes on. The plumber offered to leave the clean out cap off the line. Said that it will keep things from backing up into the house. True. But the smell will surely be reported by the neighbors when it overflows onto the lawn. And when the neighbors complain, “government” will be acutely aware of what goes on.
