Darren Criss Is Betting Big on Maybe Happy Ending, the Musical You're About to Fall in Love With

Darren Criss on the Timelessness of MAYBE HAPPY ENDING

Darren Criss has danced up the corporate ladder as J. Pierrepont Finch, stripped down to his skivvies as a queer East German rock star and tackled the “profane poetry” of David Mamet. And still, he says, there’s one thing he hasn’t done: “I haven’t taken any risks on Broadway.”

That ends this season with Maybe Happy Ending, a new musical on a mission to draw audiences to the Belasco Theatre without the benefit of a recognizable title, popular source material or songs that have already spent time on the Billboard Hot 100. “It's a really, really hard market right now to be making art,” Criss says to Broadway.com Editor-in-Chief Paul Wontorek, chatting at So & So's Neighborhood Piano Bar. And commercial Broadway theater? It’s “tedious, expensive and a gamble.” So naturally, Criss is going double or nothing as both star and producer of Broadway’s next thrilling crap shoot.

Maybe Happy Ending takes the trappings of a classic love story and inserts futuristic robots with outdated software. Criss plays Oliver opposite Helen J Shen’s Claire—a pair of Helper-Bots who, on a quest to contact their former owner, evoke a kind of Millennial-Gen Z mismatch. But rather than getting swept away by love, the two retired machines take the concept itself and try to break it down to its zeros and ones. As Criss explains, “[It’s] two computers trying to computationally synthesize and process what love is and why human beings do this.”

The musical was a hit when it debuted in Seoul, South Korea nearly a decade ago, and now, writers Will Aronson and Hue Park have a crafted an English-language version that Criss thinks has the potential to ascend to the proverbial Heaviside Layer of musical theater. “This is the seminal version that I hope can last in perpetuity for the ages,” he says, adding confidently, “I do feel like this is a timeless piece.”

Original musicals have the most challenging road on Broadway. But when you look to grassroots successes like Urinetown, or Dear Evan Hansen, or even The Prom—which ran in New York for less than a year but inspired a starry film and a slate of regional and international productions—you see how quickly an unknown quantity can become canon. “People are always like, ‘There’s no one creating original things,’” Criss says. “They are. It’s just really, really hard to produce them because you really have to believe in something hard enough to be OK with the risk.”

The fact that Maybe Happy Ending has earned that belief from some of the theater’s heaviest hitters is telling. Director Michael Arden, hot off a 2023 Tony Award for his revival of Parade, chose the piece as his next musical. And producers Jeffrey Richards and Hunter Arnold, with nearly 20 Tony Awards between them, have given Arden free rein to make a capital “B” Broadway meal of it.

The show’s cast is deceptively modest (Marcus Choi and Dez Duron complete the four-hander), but there’s nothing minimalist about Arden’s vision for Maybe Happy Ending or the high-tech space he’s worked out with set designer Dane Laffrey. In short, “They don’t f**k around,” says Criss. “This show is very technologically advanced. I think it's kind of the ace in the hole that people aren't expecting.” He tosses out comparisons to Miss Saigon’s descending helicopter and The Phantom of the Opera’s haunted chandelier—emblems of the bygone ‘80s megamusical. In an era of subtlety and economy (think recent Tony winners Kimberly Akimbo or The Band’s Visit), this, Criss promises, is “a big-a** mother**king spectacle.”

It's another bold, all-in move from the Maybe Happy Ending team, but Criss is determined to hedge no bets this time around. He looks back at his Broadway resume: How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (“Glee was white-hot and I was going in for three weeks after Daniel Radcliffe”); Hedwig and the Angry Inch (“People love that show. With or without me, it would be just fine”); American Buffalo (“A beloved and respected American play”).

“They're all classics to some degree,” he concludes. “This is not that.” Of course, understanding what Maybe Happy Ending is not is less of an issue than getting audiences to understand what it is. Right now, Criss says, there are rumblings around town that it’s “the cute little robot show.” The thought puts a mischievous grin on his face: “You have no idea.”

Hii I heard you do anon advice and I wanted to ask something.

I recently went and watched my theatre company idols in concert (Starkid, if you know them?) and as a birthday gift from a family member, I was able to do a meet and greet with them.

I panicked in front of them and the first thing I said was 'sorry, it feels like I'm having a fever dream right now'.

Everyone I've told has laughed, and my photo with the cast now looks like we're all having a strange fever dream inspired by what I said. I got the opportunity to tell them that they inspired me and thank them for the photo, but I'm still overthinking it. I'm just worried that I fucked up my one time meeting my idols. While I know it's stupid, it's stressing me out. Is there any way I can let go of this anxiety?

I get it with people in general, but usually it's with my friends, and then when I see them the next day I realise how stupid it is and feel fine again, but this one is harder because they're American celebrities.

But I completely get it. It's hard not to overthink things like this. Especially when you've been building up to that moment for so long.

I have two thoughts:

First, whenever I have an overthinking moment like this, I remind myself that while I am overthinking it, the likelihood that anyone else even remembers it is slim. For example, I said something stupid in a discord chat the other day. I am still overthinking it. But I'm sure nobody else has thought about it since.

Second, these people probably did a meet-and-greet with hundreds of people. Of those hundreds, I would say half were probably more starstruck than you, and I'd guess at least ten were downright creepy or rude. The creepy and rude ones are the ones they're going to remember down the line.

I know logic isn't going to stop you from overthinking completely, but I promise you that the only person Darren Criss is thinking about is me, because we're getting married soon. (But seriously, did you meet him? Because if you did, I hope you told him we're getting married. Because we are, he just doesn't know it.)

I'm naming you starkid anon.

(Also once I managed to get Conan Gray to read my ask in a live chat and my ask was "SIRIUS BLACK?" and his response was "Sirius Black? Ugh, guyyyyys." And I spent WEEKS trying to decide if that was a good reaction or not. So. Same.)

Spider, Missy, Ant, Harper, Amerie, Darren, Quinni and Cash are all sat in the amphitheatre.

Quinni, Darren and Cash are sitting criss cross apple sauce on the floor, chatting quietly. Missy, Harper and Amerie are standing by the entrance, talk loudly amongst themselves. Spider and Ant are sitting on the seats along the wall. Neither one is talking, instead staring ahead as they churn thoughts in their head.

They are the last of the year 12's waiting, and despite the cahtter, the room is somehow overwhelmingly silent.

It's the beginning of year 12 and the whole class is getting their classifications. There's 4 potential classifications: caregiver, little, flip and neutral.

Neutral is the most common, with 47% of the population falling into the neutral category. Neutrals can have tendencies of any of the other classes but they ultimately fall under none of the above. They function as normal all of the time.

Littles and caregivers both make up 19% of the population, coming together to form 38% of the population. Littles sometimes fall into a younger headspace where they rely more heavily on others. Caregivers are built to support and care for the littles.

Finally, flips make up 15% of the population. A flip can both regress or care for those that are regressed. Some flips lean one way or another but they can be both.

The test is quick and easy. The teens get asked some simple questions and then get their blood taken.

Within minutes, they have the results back. They group together silently, pushing aside past grievances and arguments to come together.

Quinni opens hers first, a wide grin on her face. Then, she opens the letter and in big bright letters, an orange NEUTRAL appears. She leafs through the letter, finding a pamphlet explaining her class and details on how to register with the government. "It's like opening a letter" she exclaims gleefully.

Cash and Darren open each other's, both sighing in relief when they get the same NEUTRAL as Quinni. "Thank God. I am so not built to be a caregiver" Darren sighs dramatically, clutching at their chest for added flair.

Amerie opens hers next, the whole group sitting in shock when the words FLIP stare back at them.

"Hey it's ok babe, we'll help you" Harper consoles, pulling Amerie into a hug.

"Yeah, it's no big deal" Darren chimes in.

"You get the best of both worlds?" Cash adds hesitantly.

"Yeah ok... I'm ok. Why don't you go Harps?" Amerie says after a long moment of silence. She wipes at her eyes and visibly pulls herself together.

Harper tears her envelop open, Missy lightly punching her in the arm when a bright red CAREGIVER is written in bold.

"And to noones suprise, our group mum is actually a mommy" Missy jokes, quickly getting a punch from Ant, Harper and Spider.

"OK then, let's see yours then" Spider teases, pulling her in close as they carefully open her envelope together. They skim through the envelop, but right in the middle is CAREGIVER

The group chat happily about the results and spider and Ant send each other a look. "Last two?" Spider says, though he phrases it like a question.

Ant just looks up at him, blinking with wide eyes. Ant hasn't spoken since the test, choosing instead to sit at the back of the group.

"I bet I can guess what his is going to be" Harper jokes. She gets up from her spot and sits in front of Ant, gently grabbing his attention by placing a hand on his shoulder. "Hey kiddo. Can I open your envelope? It's imporant"

Ant just nods, still not talking. Missy smiles at him and picks up the letter. She carefully opens it and places it on the table, displaying a light blue LITTLE for everyone to see.

Ant just whimpers at seeing the words and launches himself into Harper. Harper catches him with a grunt, steadying the both of them with the other hand.

"You're all good kiddo, I got you" she murmers, running her hands through his hair while he sobs into her chest.

"Awe it's alright Ant, I'll be your little buddy" Amerie jokes, sitting down besides Harper.

Cash and Darren join the two, not knowing how to help and instead offering silent support with their presence.

Quinni sits from across the table and silently hands Ant a pair of noise cancelling headphones and a fidget cube. Harper helps him put them on and he calms down almost instantly, content to sit in Harper's lap and play with the fidget cube.

"Spider, you haven't done yours y-" Missy trails off mid sentence. Everyone looks up from a now very happy Ant to see a very distraught Spider spitting off to the side.

He's clutching his open letter in his hand, the light blue of the LITTLE still clearly visible. He makes eye contact with Missy, his whole body still.

"Hey Spidey, you ok?" She asks cautiously, standing up and carefully walking over to him, watching for a reaction.

"I'm a little" He says, almost in a whisper.

"I know. Looks like we've got two little buggy boys" she chuckles over her joke to herself, before slowly sitting next to him. She gives a quick nod of her head to tell the rest of the group to leave them alone for a bit.

The two sit in silence for a long while, Spider processing this new information and Missy silently offering the support he needs.

"I don't have any gear" Spider says quietly, not making eye contact.

"That's OK, you can apply for a grant with the government to get some if you want it" Missy replies gently.

"I um... I don't know how to be little" Spider mutters, finally lifting his head to look at Missy with pleading eyes.

"Oh, well that I can help with. Can I touch you?" Missy chuckles, scooting closer. Spider just nods and leans into her.

Missy waits until he's comfortable before nodding at the rest of the gang to come over now.

Ant is the first to toddle over. He plops down in front of Spider and waits (as patiently as a 5 year old can wait) for Spuder to look up.

When spider looks up, Ant grabs his hand, says " We're buggy boys :)" before racing off. Spider lets Ant drag him along but he sends a glare Missys way.

Missy and Harper both laugh before trailing behind the two littles, chatting while they play pirates and fairies and superheros and mermaids.

A not so short introduction

Hello! My name is Milo, I am 28 and have been on tumblr for more than a decade.

I am primarily a fandom blog, but I really post whatever I want. So what you will find here will vary from day to day. My biggest fandoms are Glee and Starkid, but you will also find Woe.Begone, Magnus Archives, Malevolent, Good Omens, Heartstopper, Marvel, DC, Omgcheckplease, Stargate, Farscape, Supernatural, Doctor Who, and any myriad of other pieces of fiction that strike my fancy.

For everything fandom related, I do tag so if you don't want to see a particular fandom's content, feel free to block the tag. For the majority of them, it will simply be the name of the media, but for Glee and Starkid I have specialized tags that I will list below a read more for ease of knowing what to block.

I am a fic writer, though I only recently started writing again. My name is Meg. I’ve been on tumblr since 2011/2012. I started off as a gl*e blog and then kind of just segued into general fandom nonsense. Then around 2015-ish, I transferred to a big university where Twitter was the big thing. Pair that with an internship, graduating, and starting a job that has all but broken me in every way possible, my tumblr habits pretty much became nonexistent. It wasn’t out of malice or spite or anything weird, it just kind of happened. With that being said, Twitter really sucks now and I’m mentally at a place where I think in terms of reblogs instead of retweets. So without further blubbering, I’m here to (re) introduce myself:

-I’m a teacher

-i am currently in a graduate program to get my masters in library/information science

-I read. Too much.

-I have adhd, fall somewhere on the autism spectrum, and have crippling anxiety fueled depression

-I am queer

-I love things probably too much and too loudly but that was always my favorite thing about tumblr, someone was always weirder and louder than you so it was okay

-I really enjoy the idea of scrapbooking/journaling/collaging but I have no space to do it physically so I’m going to revisit tumblr to see if this can scratch that itch

-I’m hoping this will be a space for my pop culture interests as well as academic/general life things as well

-I know I’m entirely too old and out of touch as to how tumblr runs nowadays compared to how it did back when I couldn’t go 5 minutes without checking my phone but I’m hoping to find someway to quiet the incessant ticker tape 24 hour newsfeed happening in my head

-I’m happy to fulfill the elderly lady in the rocking chair position who people go to for stories about the olden days with pride

No real ending to this except to say my dms are always open and I’m happy to chat about literally anything. I’m gonna put all of my “stuff” in the tags in case you see anything we have in common.
