The complete lack of a black protagonist in Life is Strange is disappointing

We've got 5 games and not a single game has gotten a single black protagonist.

I do love the series, but even I can see  a problem. A complete lack of black characters in the franchise.

None of the main characters are black. None of the secondary characters are black and the only black characters they have are side characters or background characters.

Like there was no reason whatsoever why Rachel, Warren, Kate, Steph, Ryan, Cassidy, Finn, Jacob, Sarah Lee or Chris couldn't have been black. Hell, there is no reason why Max, Chloe or Rachel couldn’t have been black.(although personally I would've loved it if Rachel was Indigenous)

And the black characters we do have is really bad in terms of representation.

Wells, a drunk and crooked  principal.

Hayden, a stoner and member of the Vortex Club

Drew North, a bully jock who got in the drug trade

Charlotte, a likable character, but who's anger is consuming her and blaming others around her, tho I understand where she is coming from, but her characterization tends to be reminiscent of the unfortunate angry black woman stereotype. And just so happens to own a pot shop...

Ms Grant, Mikey, Penny, and Joey the Nurse seem to be the only positive black characters in the series.

And we still have not gotten a single black protagonist in the franchise.

I find it weird that we seemingly have little good black representation that isn't just associated with drugs.

Like I’m not trying to say DONTNOD, D9 or Square Enix are racist or anything, but I’m saying they need to do better when it comes to representation. 

We were robbed of a black main character for Life Is Strange and are instead getting a cash grab sequel with Max who might as well be a completely new character seeing as how they’re throwing away everything that Max experienced and learned and everything we loved from LIS 1 to make it.

But considering how the fandom treated Sean and Daniel and their story, I can only imagine the disgusting hate a black protagonist would get in an extremely white franchise.

One thing I love and hate about LIS franchise is that it has a lot of good and interesting characters but I often felt they didn’t get explored too much and were wasted potential at worst. Was wondering - for each LIS game (but especially 1, 2 and colours) which characters do you think had a lot of potential but were overlooked by the narrative?

Oh, good question.

LiS1: Episode 5 of the original game left a lot of plot threads unresolved, but I think the biggest one was just straight up killing Nathan offscreen. Cut content implied he was supposed to have visions of the storm and would play a bigger role toward the end. I don't like the guy, but I wish his role in the story was resolved in a more complete way than being literally disposed of by the actual villain of the story.

LiS2: LYLA LYLA LYLA LYLA LYLA LYLA LYLA. That is all.

TC: I found Charlotte's anger, influenced by grief, really compelling. It subverts the image of a kind nurturing mother for her to hold (somewhat justifiable) resentment toward Ethan for endangering himself and Gabe that night, but it comes down to a overly simplistic, binary moral choice of taking away Charlotte's anger vs. not, and gets dropped in one conversation at the Spring Fest the next episode. I think the games have gotten progressively worse at resolving their plot threads and character arcs, unfortunately.

I absolutely agree on fucking timeline remark. it's stupid I hate it.

ESPECIALLY since Steph's novel came out. Because it messed the shit out of timeline and other details.

But apart from that, I would really like Charlotte and Alex interacting more with each other. So the scene in third (was it third omg??) chapter when she lashes out would feel even more angsty and even a little unexpected. because with how little of them we saw together, I kinda expected something like this to happen.

And also Jed. The same reason.

But my overall underrated and overlooked favorite is ✨Duckie✨. Oh how I love this dramatic man. He warms my heart. Each interaction with him was really welcoming and endearing. Loved him since the "to the most tenacious detective" line.

First of all, YES, I love Duckie, what a sweet, odd man. Heart of the town fr!!

(Anon, you have given me an excuse to ramble about Charlotte and Alex, and I thank you kindly bc it's one of my favorite things to do)

I LOVE the concept of Alex and Charlotte's relationship so much, man. Charlotte is so excited to welcome Alex into her life (as seen in Chapter 1, where she's trying SO hard to strike up conversation with a very withdrawn Alex, god she's so sweet).

And then Gabe dies, and everything flips on its head. I think it's so interesting how Alex becomes the one who reaches out and is trying to initiate that relationship post-Gabe (Char does, too, of course, but I think Alex is doing more and more of the work throughout the game). Just, really wanting to build a connection, but it's so hard because the glue that held them together is gone, so now what?

And Charlotte!! How strange and sad it must be, for Gabe's sister to arrive on the day he dies. And she looks like him, and talks like him, and has the same humor. It has to be so painful, to look at Alex and see Gabe.

I think one of the things the game did RIGHT was Charlotte's anger toward Ethan. It's taboo and uncomfortable and the elephant in the room, but my god, it was so raw and real. I swear I felt it through the screen the first time I played it. Just. An incredible moment, even though I wish both choices had an equal amount of weight to them.

Frankly, I think Jed's attack on Alex was the start of Charlotte finding closure. Her partner died, and his sister was almost murdered, and it's so awful, but long-buried secrets have been unearthed and now she knows the truth of what happened. After that, I think she can finally move forward and forgive Gabe. She can forgive Alex, and Ethan, and herself.

I'm tearing up a little writing this bc I just think their relationship is so beautiful and even if canon didn't give us as much depth as I would have liked, it's still impactful and important and compelling :')

hey so I've recently played the game and Charlotte has not left my mind

She is grieving ofc and I felt very sympathetic to her emotions, but in her confession she blames everyone and said out loud she blames and HATES her son

I was so skeptical about taking her anger bc that shit can't be healthy (It wasn't! the game also condemns it) but a parent hating their kid is dangerous and I was worried for Ethan, obviously I know she wouldn't hurt him but. well, at least emotionally, there's no way he wouldn't sense... something. My immediate reaction was "oh no she needs people to help her get through this" and yes, but I don't know how she'd get through it without affecting Ethan too.

But those are emotions you can't just take those away.

Except you caaannn! and it really feels like a great option here when you look at it through some perspectives

so my question is what did you pick? did you leave her anger or take it AND WHY I'd really appreciate hearing everyone's thoughts
