Here she is, BPD analysis.
— Disclaimer: I am not a professional, I did study psychology for most of my life and my credentials to this is simply the fact that I am BPD as well. I also want to highlight that these symptoms can also be AUTISM! And that maybe that is even more relatable to him, though, you can have both, because they really tend to coexist
Here are the symptoms of BPD, and either if he shows them or not, or if its believed he does. Remembering you don't need to have all of them, you need to fit the criteria, of some specific ones, that differentiate BPD from disorders like Bipolar and depression, and they all overlap with Autism which causes a confusion in diagnosis.
• Fear of rejection and abandonment: He keeps count of every time he was rejected, his biggest struggle in life was with the fact that Amelia rejected him, replaced him, and abandoned him, he has been in the loop of this trauma for years, it never leaves him, because that's his biggest fear coming true. His fear of boringness or of being mediocre is also in this, he wants to overcompensate so people don't reject or leave him again. Also, this symptom comes with a pattern that is very very common in this symptom, leaving first, losing interest after the chase, people with BPD leave first to not get abandoned.
• Intense and unstable relationships: We know that his romantic relationships are always like this, incredibly intense at first and then it dies out or they leave or he leaves, and they tend to be unstable while it was happening, especially with Amelia, it was incredibly unstable and toxic for both.
• 8/80 relationships, going from intense love to nothing or to hatred: It seems like most of them have this, a big start, and a terrible ending, either it going to nothing or strong resentment (Amelia's case) It also has a part of this not talked, that after this hatred passes, BPD people tend to come back, and, blame themselves which well, next symptom.
• Villain complex: Most BPD people experience this, seeing themselves as absolute horrible monsters, most of his songs make him the villain, he really highlights like hey i'm a horrible person, and this is very, very common. I think funnily enough, C!Wilbur is a perfect demonstration of this part of him, it's a self insert of the Villain he makes himself to be.
• Constant changes in personality: We have seen this, even as a streamer, in a place he was never truly himself, he's always changing completely who he is, even though it's a character. I also feel that the fact that he has so many characters that are all clearly self inserts is a way to express this self image issue he has, going on a limb here but you get it. He also seems to struggle with his appearance and self image and tends to become a sponge when with others.
• Impulsive behavior: So this is many factors, getting from the internet straight up “Impulsive and risky behavior, such as gambling, reckless driving, unsafe sex, spending sprees, binge eating or drug abuse, or sabotaging success by suddenly quitting a good job or ending a positive relationship” He does a bunch of those, he did have a problem with abusing alcohol, most of us believe he did that with coke as well, we know that he impulsively drops all his responsibilities and doesn't keep up his promises, that he's constantly moving, constantly dropping and then coming back to it, that he can be super excited for something and then suddenly not be anymore, he's always ruining his relationships even though some of them are good just because he found something more exciting. He has binge eaten too but I don't know if that is something he always does.
• Self harm/Suicidal tendencies: He shows few of these, some of his songs imply that he was in a mental state that this could happen, what we know is that he did punch a window, accidentally he says, but we don't know, I think his form of self harm is self sabotage.
• Paranoia: This is something that is not spoken much about BPD but I think even his hypochondria could be a symptom since BPD is very prone to paranoia, and his is based on his health, he thinks he's dying literally all the time, that he's sick and that he has something, this is pure paranoid behavior.
• Mood swings: We don't know if he has many, we do know he has Bipolar signs in this, expressing more stages of depression and mania, but he also has constant anxiety problems, which can all be part of this symptom in specific.
• Emptiness: Another one that is incredibly necessary, and we know this is his main affliction most times, he feels apathetic all the fucking time, it's his favorite word in music, he shows this idea that he's incapable of loving too that is part of this emptiness, he thinks he doesn't feel anything because there's nothing inside him type of thing.
• Anger: This is inconclusive, it is to believe that when he was younger he was a very angry person, we don't know if that's still there, but, we know it was a problem at some point.

Dean has a really bad habit of reaching to blame people for the deaths of people he cares about (Sam for Charlie, Jack for Cas, Cas for Mary), mostly because he unnecessarily blames himself but has to project it onto others so he doesn't blow his brains out (of course, this time around it doesn't help that this is what sends him over the edge with the Mark)

“When Donald Trump proclaimed himself the ‘world’s biggest winner’, psychoanalyst Josh Cohen got interested in the opposite: what is it to be a loser.
“Delving into comics, European literature, and the writings of Freud, Josh concludes that embracing our inner loser is what makes us most human.”

Tumblr media
You don't know what's making you more drunk; the alcohol or the man in front of you.
You've been watching his dark hooded eyes gaze at you this whole conversation, something that should feel casual, but with no one else on the couch, feels more intimate than you would have expected. And try as you might, you can't ignore the deep timbre of his voice, almost reminding you of a siren in how you can barely focus on anything else. Even the loud music of the party seems to fade when your eyes naturally trace the sound to the curve of his mouth, occasionally curling on one side when he catches your eyes wandering lower.
Damn. You don't remember being this much of a lightweight.
“-but enough about my major,” he sighs, rubbing his finger absentmindedly along the trim of the couch, a gesture that definitely should not have your insides twisting into a coil. “I am becoming increasingly curious as to what yours might be.” The tilt of his lips gives away the mock sincerity he's using, a sarcastic stab to the dull nature of collegiate small talk. You fight the urge to grin, feeling like a silly teenage girl. It was only one shot of vodka, what the hell?
“Guess.” An unoriginal response, but he leans back and strokes an imaginary beard, looking to the ceiling as if he was consulting the gods of career choices.
After a moment, he snaps his fingers and points at you.
“Culinary arts?”
“Close. Psychology.”
He bursts out laughing at your blatant lie, and you don't think you've ever heard a sound more disarming.
There is no way it was just vodka in your red solo cup.
“Have you been psychoanalyzing me?” He says with a glint in his eyes as he narrows them.
“I can't help it,” you laugh.
“Tell me.” His voice was so clear despite it being barely above a whisper.
“You just want to know how you're perceived by a stranger, don't you?”
His jaw drops open in awe. “You really are a psych major, huh?” You nod your head and let a laugh slip out again.
“So what have you gathered about me then?” He leans closer again, quieting his voice even more just in case anyone could hear him over the raging bass of the speakers.
“Well for one, you’re quiet,” you begin, and you wait for him to open his mouth(probably to argue that that’s obvious) to continue, “but it’s not because you’re shy. You’re reserved, probably choosing to keep to yourself in public situations because you don’t crave social interaction.”
His tongue pushes the inside of his cheek, fighting a smile, and you have to digest the butterflies in your stomach to keep going.
“And you’re observant, which is pretty common amongst introverted…?” you wait for him to confirm your guess with a nod, “Right. Introverted reserved guys that get caught people watching at parties.”
“I was not!” He argues, scrunching his nose in defiance.
“How’d you know what was in my cup then?”
“Oh that?” He nods his head over to the strawberry blonde that has the kitchen on lock, entertaining practically every girl within earshot of him. “Jaemin makes the same drink for every new girl he meets.”
You raise an eyebrow, unimpressed. “A vodka cranberry?”
“With a splash of lime,” he adds, rolling his eyes. “He insists it elevates the drink.”
“Does he know it’s a house party?"
“Shh, he doesn’t need to know that.”
You’re both laughing, with heads so close that if it weren’t for the decibel levels of the party, you’d be sweating buckets at his proximity.
“You’re good though,” he says, sighing, and when he sees your confused stare he elaborates, “your psychoanalysis, I mean. That was pretty spot on.” You shake your head, waving him off with your free hand.
“That was nothing– I’d rather see you try,” you subtly challenge, raising your cup back to your lips.
“Oh yeah?”
You raise your eyebrows, as if you were daring him to try and figure you out.
He leans back from you, now gazing at you thoughtfully as he crosses his arms across his chest. Immediately you feel warm, clearly unprepared for having this much attention on you, let alone his. Your outfit was nothing unusual for a college party– just a short dress you felt confident in paired with a shrug that matched your sneakers –and you smirk to yourself knowing that the only piece of your personality he could derive from your clothes was well out of sight.
“I think you have a lot of secrets,” he says suddenly, meeting your eyes and leaning in close again. There was a lilt to his voice; was he teasing?
“Doesn’t everyone?” You ask, attempting to get him to elaborate.
“No, you’re probably a vault now that I think about it,” he chuckles, eyes wandering down to your neck as he eyes the locket necklace hanging just above your collarbones. “And assuming you want to go into a career where you help people, you’re always giving advice and listening to others, but don’t bother bothering others with your problems.”
He hit the nail on the head so hard you’re practically drooling.
“Who are you, seriously,” you laugh, feeling ridiculously exposed.
“Park Jisung, creative writing,” he says, swirling his hands and giving a mock bow, and you playfully slap his hand away. “How’s your back?”
“Sorry?”
“Your back. You know, doesn’t it hurt from carrying the weight of your friends’ trauma?”
When was the last time you laughed this much? “Not nearly as much as writer’s block.”
He scoffs, holding a hand against his hoodie and leaning back as if you’ve delivered a fatal blow. Which you probably did, to his ego. “So she plays dirty. I should have seen that coming.”
“Careful, I know how to weaponize words.”
“Well that makes two of us,” he muses, leaning close enough so his voice is clear again. “I’m also good at telling people what they wanna hear.”
“Is that so?” You bend down and leave your solo cup on the floor, no longer interested in its contents. “What do you think I wanna hear then?”
He pauses, probably weighing the risk of voicing his next thought.
“Mmmm…something like how from the moment I saw you at the bar, I knew I couldn’t leave this party without your number,” he says, fighting a smirk as he lifts a hand to his face to hide his bashful expression.
“Oh really,” you laugh, mentally thanking the low light in the room for hiding the blush coloring your cheeks. He wasn’t wrong though, you won’t let him leave without your digits in his phone.
Your gaze flickers down to his pouty lips, hoping he’ll pick up what you’re putting down. ”Anything else?”
“I think…” he says slowly, leaning in just enough so his intentions are clear as day, “you want me to say that I wanna try that vodka cranberry.”
“With lime,” you add, eyelids dropping as his face inches closer to yours. “The lime is essential.”
“Right. Can’t forget that.”
He smiles right when his lips touch yours, and the action has your skin nearly bursting into flames before he finally commits to the kiss.
Pillowy and soft, his kiss is slow and sensual against your lips, and immediately you feel so dizzy that you brace a hand on his shoulder to steady yourself, which unintentionally pulls him closer. The second kiss is deeper as a result, and the buzz in your fingertips is not from the alcohol, you’re sure.
Pulling away with a smile on his lips, Jisung watches your reaction carefully, and you hope that you don't look half as flustered as you feel with his face still close to yours.
“Riddle me this, psych major,” he says, eyes flickering around your face, “can you tell me what I’m thinking right now?”
You don’t even have to think twice; following his gaze was enough of an indication.
Somehow, you find it in yourself to giggle amongst the tension. “You want to get out of here?”
“Well,” he grins, tilting his head towards the door and offering a hand to you, “since you’re asking…”

I want to take a minute to talk about the books that are in the therapist's office in 'The Gang Gets Analyzed'. Now, I've watched this episode at least ten times, and I never once paid much attention to them, but upon viewing it today, they finally stood out.
Tumblr media
The first one that caught my attention was the Child Sexual Abuse book sitting atop the Lesbian Subjects one. I had to pause and rewind, and immediately I couldn't help but think they were referring to Dennis, Charlie and Dee (I've read speculation about her sexuality and it's a definite possibility as we know Glenn stated that all the characters are a little gay).
Let's look a little closer at the other titles - (I can't make out the very first one on the left, no matter how close I zoomed in), but from there we have Soul, Mind, Body, Medicine : A Complete Soul Healing SYSTEM for Optimum Health and Vitality (again, Dennis, anyone?), Psychological Research in Prisons (Mac and his daddy issues?), Power vs. Force (a book that explains how anyone can tap into their inner power to change their lives and the lives of those around them) (Again, this cries Dennis to me), Identity and Anxiety (Mac again), and finally, Listening Perspectives in Psychotherapy, a book that illustrates four distinctly different styles of listening that have emerged in psychoanalysis (Dennis and how he analyzes the other four).
I just found the titles not only interesting, but quite specific to the characters' traits.
Moving on...
Tumblr media
Next up, on the top shelf, the first book Medicine Without Menopause felt like a dig at Dee, followed by Adult Children of Alcoholics (Dee, Dennis and Charlie), (And I Can only partially make the next one out) The Handbook of Psychiatric x (I can't make out the part in white but it sounds like something Dennis would've ingested at some point), Sex After Sixty (Frank, no doubt), and lastly Collective Behavior which the very definition of describes the gang to a t - {Excerpt from the book} Collective behavior takes many forms but generally violates societal norms. Collective behavior can be tremendously destructive, as with riots or mob violence, silly, as with fads, or anywhere in between. Collective behavior is always driven by group dynamics, encouraging people to engage in acts they might consider unthinkable under typical social circumstances.
Then we have the other books that are standing - The Human Animal (Charlie and possibly Frank), Adult Bipolar Disorders (Dennis, Mac?), When Life Becomes Precious (a book about taking care of a loved one with a terminal illness i.e. in reference to Charlie's Mom Has Cancer?), Woman Heal Thyself (another dig at Dee), and lastly, How to Live Well on a Shoestring Budget (Frank and Charlie).
Tumblr media
This screenshot was taken in the last few minutes of the ep, and look! A new book has been added to the pile - Childhood Socialization. I don't know why I found that one to feel like it was calling out Charlie specifically, but could quite possibly refer to them all as well.
I feel like all of these titles weren't just mere happenstance and that someone picked these out to represent the gang as a whole or individually.
Either way, just thought there were a lot of interesting choices in the mold. Thank you for listening to my ted talk regarding the Gang Gets Analyzed.

Ok I took a minute to sit down and get my thoughts together.
As shell shocking that this is. I’ve come to a small conclusion. This is bringing back to what you were based off of. That the “hero” (or in this point, “Savior”) realized that none of this is real. That the audience must have hated you for what you’ve done. And it did follow through that at first. We as not anons, but viewers originally hated you. But as we took more time to get to know you guys, the more human we saw to you all. To Charlie’s self loathing to your previous anger issues to Ranboo’s coming out. Hell, even psychoanalysis down to a T and looking at logical injuries and determining what would be needed in our world. That all touched something with the audience. It appeals to the human nature. The Pathos side of people of you will. As much as these things are fabricated and not real in a sense. They made us feel something. They formed a community of viewers who felt as tight as a band of thieves. A love for a father continues going for their kid. No matter life or death. So id like to thank you. Not only Hetch but to the person who planned all of this out, the one who’s drawing out your response behind the scenes. She’s made something wonderful as an audience to enjoy. To play a part in. She made what was generation loss in this alternate universe. So thank you. Not from ‼️

Hector has not been an FBI agent for many years; now he teaches psychoanalysis to future agents. One day Charles asks him to help with an episode of "The Architects of Murder" about Manny Sherman, and after that they gradually become friends.
Or the short story of how everyone knows that Hector has a crush on Charles, except Charlie himself.

Erik Erikson's Stages of Psychosocial Development
For this project, Erik Erikson’s Theory of Development – also commonly referred to as Erikson’s Eight Stages – will be used to provide a psychoanalysis of Charlie Kelmeckis, the main protagonist of the film The Perks of Being a Wallflower.
Erik Erikson was a German-American psychoanalyst born in 1903 in what is present-day Germany. He is most well known for his theory on the psychosocial development of human beings.
As described in Chapter 9 of My Psychology, Erikson’s theory posits that an individual goes through eight stages of development in which each stage presents a challenge, or “crises”, that they must overcome. Successfully addressing such crises allows the individual to acquire a virtue, specific to the stage from which the individual has overcome, thus encouraging healthy psychological development. Conversely, a failure to adequately address these crises can have a negative effect on further psychological development (Pomerantz, 2022).
Erikson’s eight stages are as follows:
1st Stage (0 - 1 year): Trust vs. Mistrust – Hope
At this stage, a newborn child knows little to nothing about the world around them, and is heavily dependent on their caregiver(s) for love and support. If a child’s caregiver is nurturing and attentive to the child's needs, that child will feel a sense of security and come to the conclusion that people are generally good, acquiring the virtue of “hope”. Alternatively, if the child’s caregiver is unreliable, unloving, etc. the child will develop a sense of mistrust and anxiety around others.
2nd Stage (1 - 3 years): Autonomy vs. Shame/Doubt – Will
At this stage, children begin to develop a sense of independence, exercising their ability to perform previously supported tasks – like walking, eating, and going to the bathroom – on their own. If a child feels supported in this exploration of independence, they will develop a sense of confidence in being able to do things on their own, and thus acquire the virtue of “will”. Alternatively, being overly critical of the child will cause them to develop shame over being unable to do things without the support of others.
3rd Stage (3 - 6 years): Initiative vs. Guilt – Purpose
As children begin to engage with others, namely children around their age, outside of their immediate family, they begin to acknowledge the effect they have on their surroundings and others. This development of initiative can be described as a child’s ability to feel in control of their actions, thus acquiring the virtue of “purpose”. If a child’s exploration of this stage is scrutinized and/or discouraged by their caregivers, they develop feelings of guilt about their desire to take initiative.
4th Stage (7 - 11 years): Industry vs. Inferiority – Competence
At this stage, children begin to compare themselves to their peers, typically regarding their own personal skills and abilities; notably, this comparison primarily takes place in the context of school and/or associated extracurricular activities when individual skills are magnified. Feedback is important at this age; if children consistently receive encouragement from their caregivers and teachers, they will develop a sense of industry. In other words, a sense of confidence in their skills and abilities leads to the acquisition of “competence”. Alternatively, if a child does not feel supported, whether it be through a lack of encouragement or overt, negative feedback, they risk developing feelings of inferiority about themselves.
5th Stage (12 - 18 years): Identity vs. Confusion – Fidelity
It is at this stage that individuals begin to explore their own identity, discovering who they are and what makes them unique. This also goes hand-in-hand with establishing one's own beliefs and values. When an individual is successful in this stage, they gain confidence in their ability to self-identify and explore other aspects of their personality, thus acquiring the virtue of fidelity, which in this context is a loyalty to one's true self. Alternatively, a failure of this stage, which can be attributed to an individual feeling restricted in this exploration, leads to one’s lack of assuredness of who they are.
6th Stage (19 - 29 years): Intimacy vs. Isolation – Love
At this stage, individuals begin to form deeper, more intimate relationships, both intimate and platonic, with others. Successfully navigating this stage leads to an individual developing the ability to experience intimacy with others, thus acquiring the virtue of love. Alternatively, a failure at this stage may propel an individual towards isolation and feelings of loneliness. It is theorized that this typically occurs due to experiences of rejection and/or the latent effect of challenges faced during earlier stages of development.
7th Stage (30 - 64 years): Generativity vs. Stagnation – Care
At this stage, which takes place during adulthood, individuals are often concerned with continuing to build upon their personal and professional lives – this may involve focusing on one’s career, interpersonal relationships, or spirituality to name a few. Feeling that they are meaningfully contributing to society contributes to feelings of generativity, thus allowing them to acquire the virtue of care. Alternatively, if an individual does not feel that they are giving back to society, they may experience feelings of stagnation.
8th Stage (65+ years): Integrity vs. Despair – Wisdom
As individuals near the end of life, they tend to reflect on whether their life was well-lived. Depending on how they feel about how they conducted themselves over the course of their life span, the individual may experience either ego-integrity, the acceptance of how their life was lived, or, conversely, despair and regret. Achieving ego-integrity unlocks the virtue of wisdom
Critiques of this theory
Critiques of Erikson’s theory of development typically concern its inherent bias towards Western, American culture and a general lack of diverse, multicultural perspectives on development. For instance, Erikson’s subjects primarily consisted of affluent, upper middle class white individuals, thus constructing an extremely narrow understanding of development in individuals. Arguably, a failure to address how sociological factors like identity – e.g. race, ethnicity, class, gender, sexuality – affect individual lived experiences clashes with the notion that Erikson’s theory is a universal one.
Another significant critique of this theory is its rigid definition of each stage of development, both in terms of what specific crises are experienced as well as how long these stages last. As previously acknowledged, the intersecting identities of an individual have profound effects on their progression through these stages, which notably revolve around a Euro-centric understanding of development. For instance, on average, homosexual individuals may experience Erikson’s 5th and 6th Stages later than their heterosexual peers due to their living within the confines of a hetero-normative society that does not seek to accommodate their psychosocial needs.

The scene above is also a pointed dig at Freudian psychoanalysis and the whole Oedipus/Elektra complex thing that sought to normalize these ideas in the open (and did do enormous damage to the general understanding of CSA) because Nabokov hated Freuds guts for exactly that reason. It pops up several times throughout the novel in pointed asides even on top of the general way Humbert's abuse is allowed to go on because of his position as a patriarchal authority figure. It's even more clear in the paragraph proceeding the bit that @rilkeannheart quoted here (as well as how much Humbert delights in his power knowing that he can frame himself as a protector with this rethoric despite having done this exact thing to her):
But now, I am just your old man, a dream dad protecting his dream daughter. “My chère Dolorès! I want to protect you, dear, from all the horrors that happen to little girls in coal sheds and alley ways, and, alas, comme vous le savez trop bien, ma gentille , in the blueberry woods during the bluest of summers. Through thick and thin I will still stay your guardian, and if you are good, I hope a court may legalize that guardianship before long. Let us, however, forget, Dolores Haze, so-called legal terminology, terminology that accepts as rational the term ‘lewd and lascivious cohabitation.’ I am not a criminal sexual psychopath taking indecent liberties with a child. The rapist was Charlie Holmes; I am the therapist—a matter of nice spacing in the way of distinction
Humbert also specifically knows his role as a patriarch allows him further liberties to molest Dolores than he would have as an unrelated man and it is what drives him to marry her mother in the first place (and again we have a reference to a literary canon that legitimizes his behavior):
Suddenly, gentlemen of the jury, I felt a Dostoyevskian grin dawning (through the very grimace that twisted my lips) like a distant and terrible sun. I imagined (under conditions of new and perfect visibility) all the casual caresses her mother’s husband would be able to lavish on his Lolita. I would hold her against me three times a day, every day. All my troubles would be expelled, I would be a healthy man. “To hold thee lightly on a gentle knee and print on thy soft cheek a parent’s kiss …” Well-read Humbert!
Then, figuratively speaking, I shattered the glass, and boldly imagined (for I was drunk on those visions by then and underrated the gentleness of my nature) how eventually I might blackmail—no, that is too strong a word— mauvemail big Haze into letting me consort with little Haze by gently threatening the poor doting Big Dove with desertion if she tried to bar me from playing with my legal stepdaughter.
And as is repeated in this post, this is a logical extension of the existing patriarchal structures and Humbert sees that too and he relishes it, as the first quote above already showed. He doesn't see any conflict between thinking of Dolores as his daughter and his sexual subject, they go hand in hand, he is living the ultimate patriarchal fantasy in his mind.
(Lolita, with an incestuous thrill, I had grown to regard as my child)
one of rgu's best takes about rape and incest is that rape and incest are not deviant. they are exceedingly normal. they are, in fact, the logical extension of patriarchal romance and the patriarchal family -- the same logic that underpins those structures facilitates abuse, rape, incest, and csa. many people, even those who nominally understand the idea of rape culture, conceive of rape as a deviation from cultural mores, and even more people view incest as an aberration, a twisting of the Family (which is Good) into something unnatural and evil. but rgu correctly identifies that rape and incest are outgrowths of patriarchal society, not alien intrusions upon it. incest is merely a symptom of the problem which is the patriarchal family itself. rape and domestic abuse are merely symptoms of the problem which is patriarchal & heteronormative romance and society itself. rather than rape being deviant, it is resistance to patriarchy which is deviant; rather than incest being abnormal, it is a girl holding out a hand to another girl in pain which is abnormal. because 'abnormal' does not mean 'bad' any more than 'normal' means 'good'. "fall in love normally, get married normally, have a normal family, and have a normal life -- but normal has nothing to do with us!"

it was always about you
Tumblr media
Sam arrives at TGI Fridays early. It’s Friday, early evening, and he’s hungry. He figures he’ll start with the broccoli cheese soup and work his way toward that Jack Daniels chicken. It’s 1990, and chain restaurants are still pretty damn good. He’ll never live to see the day when they’re not anymore.
But today, Sam doesn’t know that.
He just knows he’s meeting with Charlie.
It’s been an unusually long time since Sam has really spoken to his little brother.
For most of their lives, Sam and Charlie have been what Sam calls casually close. He loves his brother. He admires him, even. Charlie’s the kind of guy who never knows how to quit, and more often than not, it shapes up to be a good thing. Lately, though, it hasn’t been such a good thing. It hasn’t been such a good thing at all.
Sam’s pretty sure he and Charlie would be more than just casually close if it hadn’t been for their mother. Charlie was her saint, and Sam was her imago. He’s read enough archaic psychoanalysis to know that it’s not supposed to be this way; that the parent is supposed to be the child’s imago, but Maggie Doyle has been doing things strangely since she was Little Mags Brady. Charlie is the version of herself that never stopped believing, like a damn Journey record. Sam is the version of herself that wasted his potential; locked it up in the attic with the Pat Boone albums and pressed orchids from the senior prom.
In other words, he’s just like her.
Charlie refuses to see any of that. He’s been lying to himself ever since he figured out he’s the only kid who gets a solid chocolate bunny on Easter (as opposed to the hollow jokes Sam and Sadie have had to contend with since they were old enough to chew). When he and Sam had their weekly phone call a couple of months ago, before Thanksgiving, Charlie mentioned their mother was taking him to New York to see Meet Me in St. Louis at the Gershwin. Never mind that Meet Me in St. Louis was Sam’s favorite movie when he was four, five, six, and seven. Never mind that Mom never took Sam or even Sadie on a special trip. Not when they were kids and not once they grew up. Never mind that they never once thought the whole family might want to be together on Thanksgiving. They just went. They just went, left everybody else in the dust, and never once cared about how anyone else felt.
When Charlie walks through the door, he looks older than twenty. Maybe not older, per se, but cooler. It’s that fucking leather jacket. Another purchase from Mom. She got it for him for Christmas this year. Never mind that when Sam wanted a leather jacket, he had to pull doubles at the little market to afford one. Charlie just got one handed to him. That’s what happens when you’re the miracle baby after difficult twins. You get stuff, and they get shit.
He sits down like it hasn’t been two months since he and Sam had a real conversation. Smoothly orders a Coca-Cola from the waitress like he’s really ordering a cocktail. Sam almost rolls his eyes. He knows exactly what he’s going to say to Charlie.
You gotta see it, man. With Mom, it was never about me. It was always about you.
But it’ll probably be for naught.
When it’s Charlie, it usually is.
