“George, do we have plans for dinn—"
George looked up and his eyes landed on you crumpled on the floor. His heart skipped a beat, and without a second thought, he sprinted toward you, panic etched across his face. You were cradling your elbow, your whole body trembling as pain pulsed through your arm.
“Shit.” He knelt down, positioning himself right in front of you, his voice softer now, but still filled with urgency. “You alright?” he asked, his brows furrowed with concern.
“Don’t touch it, don’t touch it,” you pleaded, your voice fragile as tears began to well in your eyes. The sharp sting radiated up your arm, intensifying with every heartbeat.
“I won’t, I promise,” George replied gently, his tone steady despite his racing thoughts. “I just need to take a look, alright?”
You nodded, biting your lip to keep from crying out as you slowly moved your other arm away, revealing the bruises already blooming across your skin and the unnatural angle of your forearm. His face tightened, a sigh escaping him. “Oh, kiddo, I think you broke it.”
The look you gave him then—wide-eyed, a mix of fear and confusion—was something George wasn’t prepared for. He’d never seen you like this, and it broke something in him. His usual calm exterior cracked at the sight of you so vulnerable, so scared.
“C’mon, let’s get you to the car, yeah?” His voice was tender as he stood, immediately helping you up by gripping your uninjured arm with careful precision. He steadied you, his movements deliberate, every action measured to keep from causing you more pain.
Without hesitation, George guided you toward the front door. He didn’t stop to grab his phone or wallet, leaving everything behind. His sole focus was on you—getting you to the hospital, making sure you were safe.
The world outside was a blur as he opened the car door for you, gently easing you into the passenger seat, his hands shaking ever so slightly. “We’ll get you fixed up, I promise,” he murmured, more to himself than to you, though his eyes remained locked on yours, filled with quiet reassurance.
……….
An X-ray technician walked into the room, and explained the basics of what was gonna happen before helping you into a wheelchair to wheel you into the exam room. You gave a small, almost imperceptible nod, the usual spark in your eyes dimmed, your enthusiasm drained. George watched you, his heart sinking with every step you took. He wasn’t prepared for how much it would hurt him to see you like this—so quiet, so defeated. The sadness clung to you like a shadow, creeping further into your expression with every passing second, and something shifted inside him. He felt powerless, desperate to fix things but knowing he couldn't.
As you shuffled toward the door, you looked back at George, eyes pleading for reassurance. He sat up as he spoke, “I’m gonna text Momma, alright?”
You nodded again, barely meeting his eyes, the pain too overwhelming for your usual bright response. It crushed him, seeing you like this—so far from your energetic self. He quickly pulled out his phone, typing with trembling fingers, his mind racing as he tried to hold it together for both of you.
……….
George | r u still at the studio?
Charli | yea wrapping up now. Y?
George | Y/n fell. we’re at the urgent care on carter st.
Charli | what? Is she okay?
George | shes getting xrays right now. I think it’s broken
Charli | oh my god ur joking
George | No.
George | I’m sorry baby
Charli | I'm on my way.
……….
He stared at the screen for a moment after sending the last text, the words hanging in the air. The guilt gnawed at him, as though somehow he should have prevented this, should have been able to protect you. When the door opened again and you were wheeled back inside, George’s heart clenched. He slipped his phone into his pocket, his eyes never leaving you.
The X-ray technician gave a brief, polite goodbye and closed the door behind him.
“Mom’s on her way.” he said softly, but all you could do was nod again, the weight of everything too much to bear at the moment. George swallowed hard, forcing himself to stay strong, even though seeing you like this was breaking him more than he’d ever let on. “You doing alright?” He said, taking you out of your zoned out state.
You sighed and shrugged, “I’ve been better I guess.”
……….
“Mum’s here, I’m gonna go get her. You gonna be alright?”
You nodded and gave a small smile.
He made his way out the door and to the parking lot to meet Charli.
“You broke my daughter?” She said, slamming the front door.
“No, no. No, no, no. I didn’t break her.”
“Well she’s broken!” She said, throwing her bag over her shoulder.
“But I didn’t break her.”
“So she broke herself?” She said, shrugging.
“No! She just tripped and broke her arm!”
“And what did she trip over?”
George sighed. “...a pedal me and Matty were using…”
“So it sounds to me like she wouldn’t have tripped and broken her arm in the first place if you blokes hadn’t placed it there. Right?” She started walking towards the front door or the clinic and away from George.
“Charli-”
“We’ll talk about this later. I want to see y/n.”
His girlfriend being angry wasn’t what he necessarily expected, especially not at him. He was too tired to fight it. One thing they could agree on was that you came first, and you needed all the comfort and help you could get right now.
George led her to the room, letting her walk in first. Her expression changed upon seeing your face. “How are you feeling my sweet?”
You smiled at her own smile. “I don’t know. I think the pain meds are starting to wear off.”
She smoothed your hair. “We can get you some more.” She turned to the door where he was standing. “George? Will you find the Nurse?” He solemnly nodded and walked out the door. Turning back with a smirk that didn’t go unnoticed by you.
You spoke softly once the door closed, “Don’t be mad at him, Mom.”
She tilted her head in fake confusion. “I’m not mad, why would I be mad-”
“I know when you guys get angry with each other…”
She sighed, dropping the act. “Anyone who hurts my baby I get mad with.”
“He didn’t hurt me. I hurt myself and it was an accident.”
……….
The doctor finally returned, clipboard in hand, and offered a reassuring smile. “It’s definitely broken, but there’s nothing a couple of weeks in a cast won’t fix.” Relief washed over the room, even if only slightly, as you all now waited for a nurse to come in and wrap up the visit. The promise of heading home soon lingered in the air.
You lay stretched out on the exam table, slowly sucking on a lollipop one of the charge nurses had given you during the paperwork shuffle. It was a small distraction from the lingering ache in your arm, though the real tension wasn’t from the pain—it was from your mom and George.
They sat side by side, close enough to touch, but the space between them felt like miles. Neither had spoken a word to the other, both stubbornly avoiding eye contact as though locked in some invisible standoff. Your mom had her arms and legs crossed tightly, her posture stiff, while George sat beside her, slouched in defeat, his hands resting limply in his lap.
You glanced between them, the tension more painful than your broken arm. Finally, you couldn’t take it anymore. “Oh my god, can you guys just apologize already?” Your voice broke the silence, startling them both. “I’m gonna be just fine. There’s literally no point in fighting.”
They both let out soft, sheepish laughs, clearly caught off guard by your bluntness. From your laid-out position on the table, you watched as their defenses slowly crumbled. Charli turned to George first, her lips tugging into a soft, tentative smile. He glanced back at her, the tension in his face easing, and after a moment, he reached for her hand.
“I’m sorry for not telling you right away,” George murmured, his thumb brushing lightly over her knuckles. His voice was quiet, full of regret. “I should’ve called you the second we were in the car.”
He lifted her hand and kissed her wrist, the small gesture enough to make your mom’s face soften entirely. She smiled back at him, her own walls lowering. “I’m sorry for being angry with you. I had no reason to be. You were doing the right thing… You saved her, and I’m sorry.”
They exchanged a quiet look, the kind of wordless understanding that spoke louder than any argument. Slowly, they leaned in and shared a soft, forgiving kiss, the weight of the tension between them finally lifting.
You couldn’t help but roll your eyes playfully, letting out a dramatic sigh as you lay back down on the table. “Thank goodness.”
They both laughed, the sound warm and full of relief, and for the first time that night, everything felt just a little bit lighter.

Na, most, hogy kijöttek az első 2021-es év végi albumlisták, itt a tökéletes időpont megosztani a 2020-as félkész (jó, 7/8-ad kész) albumlistámat.

Borte
favorite thing about them: hmmm i like how annoying and intrusive she is lol. borte could read my diary (orla from derry girls style lol) and i honestly wouldn’t even be mad about it.
least favorite thing about them: i love everything about her so im go with someone’s headcanon that borte would have a threesome with rowaelin 😷 like i cannot even think about that without wanting to kms (obv i ship borte x aelin but borte and rowboat is an abomination and i hate that that person would say that)
favorite line: maybe not my fave but certainly memorable: “What does it feel like to be a duck, paddling beneath water but gliding so smoothly over the surface? When you eat as an animal, does the meat all fit in your human stomach? Do you have to wait between eating as an animal and shifting back into a human because of it? Do you defecate as an animal?” love that she asks all the questions i want to ask and love that she has no boundaries ✊
brOTP: falkan and borte are fun. also borte and nesryn of course!
OTP: borte x yeran and borte x nesryn!
nOTP: again- borte x row 🤢🤢 r🤢 i can’t even say it
random headcanon: her mother’s ruk would not let anyone but borte to come near her after her rider died. that first night after her mother’s death, borte fell asleep nestled within the bird’s wings. weeks went by like that and while borte offered the bird freedom, she stayed with her rider’s daughter. one morning, borte woke up and found that the great ruk was no longer breathing next to her :(
on a fun note, i think she collects rocks!
unpopular opinion: she’s not straight!!
song i associate with them: famous by charli xcx
favorite picture of them: consider this picrew and this photo of princess nokia 🔥

Here’s what I enjoyed in May. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6G0CPjAQFlGFCTXXbx6jZg?si=B5-28pckSb2vC0pim46A7A
NEW MUSIC: The Bad Bad Hats “The Wild Honeypie Buzzsession” A charming band from Minneapolis. They’ve been livestreaming every Saturday for the past few months and they sound great doing it.
Café Racer “Shadow Talk” If you’ve wanted to get a fix of Cryptograms/ Fluorescent Grey era Deerhunter this will set you right.
Caleb Landry Jones “The Mother Stone” He’s a captivating actor. His record is a woozy, brassy affair.
Carly Rae Jepsen “Dedicated Side B” This record is every bit as good as the “actual” record.
Charli XCX “Detonate” A great song from Charli XCX’s quarantine album.
Christian Lee Hutson “Beginners” An intimate folk record, produced by Phoebe Bridgers.
Deau Eyes “Let It Leave” Alt country goodness.
Fontaines D.C. “A Hero’s Death” Good advice.
Jaime Wyatt  “Neon Cross” More alt country goodness.
Jeff Rosenstock “N O  D R E A M” Rosenstock’s 2018 record “POST-“ is an equal to Superchunk’s “What A Time to Be Alive” in terms of examining the current age by asking ”What the fuck is going on?” in the form of a punk album. Rosenstock keeps that energy alive with “N O  D R E A M”.
Jim White and Marissa Anderson “The Quickening” Experimental drums and guitar from two captivating artists.
Mark Lanegan “Straight Songs of Sorrow” …and drugs. Sorrow and drugs.
Moses Sumney “grae” I saw Moses Sumney open for A Hundred Waters at the beginning of 2015. He ended the set by saying, “I think I have a few tapes left, come find me if you want one.” Greatest merch pitch ever.
Perfume Genius “Set My Heart On Fire Immediately” I look forward to each record with an expectation of greatness but no idea what it will sound like. A Perfume Genius preorder is one of my safest bets.
Prince and the Revolution “Live in Syracuse 1985” Prince followed his own whims onstage; he shifted gears quickly and rarely played entire songs. This set captures him at the hight of his powers at a time when he was still playing what could be considered a conventional set. He played the whole songs here; the setlist is incredible and the performances are expansive.
Rose City Band “Summerlong” Summer jams.
The Soft Pink Truth “Shall We Go On Sinning So That Grace May Increase?” Experimental house from Drew Daniel of Matmos.
Sparks “A Steady Drip Drip Drip” A new Sparks album. Charming, pointed, and very funny.
Sweet Spirit “Trinidad” Sweet Spirit seemed like a glam band (Sabrina Ellis and Andrew Cashen also helm the excellent punk band A Giant Dog) but this album is straight pop and it’s wonderful.
Varsity “Fine Forever” I saw Varsity open for Japanese Breakfast in Chicago a few years ago, “Fine Forever” is a leap forward. It’s a great record.
X “Alphabetland” I love the sound of X.
OLD MUSIC (revisits and new discoveries) :
Gospel Music “duettes, How to Get to Heaven from Jacksonville FL” Tracyanne Campbell tweeted about singing on “Automobile” and that led me to this EP and LP by Gospel Music. Wry lyrics in the spirit of Beat Happening or The Magnetic Fields.
Ministry “The Land of Rape and Honey, Psalm 69, Filth Pig, The Dark Side of the Spoon, Animositisomnia, No W, Rio Grande Blood, The Last Sucker” Upon reading the visual history book Prescripture, I went to revisit a few Ministry albums. My shorthand takeaway is that I’m never going to like “Filth Pig” (a land-of-a-thousand-chances record for me) but “The Dark Side of the Spoon” - where Al added a saxophone to the sludge - is still one of my favorites.
The Pipettes “We Are The Pipettes” They were fabricated to make modern girl-group music (“Pipettes” like they were formed in a lab, get it?) but had authentic talent. They have a handful of other releases, but “We Are The Pipettes” is the one to check out.
OLD MOVIES: Art School Confidential (2006) Director Terry Zwigoff revisits Daniel Clowes material for this cynical, funny look at art school.
Everyone Else (2009) The Forest for the Trees (2003) A few years ago I spent three hours on Christmas Day at the NuArt watching Toni Erdmann, the third feature written and directed by Maren Ade. It was one of my favorite films of the year. Her first two films are excellent as well. “Everyone Else” observes a young couple in what could be their final days together, and “The Forest for the Trees” chronicles the painful devastation of an idealistic young school teacher. Ade’s films aren’t always “fun” to watch, but I cared about all three of the leads. She works with the actors to capture authentic characters and then lets those characters guide the story.
Tumblr media
Godzilla (Showa Era 1954-1975) I was halfway through “Ghidorah the Three-Headed Monster” when my six-year-old passed through the room on her way to bed. “What’s this about?” What started as an attempt to delay bedtime for a few minutes has turned into part of our nightly routine: we’ve watched the entire Showa Era run of 15 films, plus “Rodan” and “Mothra.” My daughter marvels at the monsters and I marvel at what she sees and hears. We watched half a dozen films before she turned and exclaimed, “I like the Ghidorah music the best!” She made me realize how much kids appreciate a child’s perspective: her favorite film from the period is “Son of Godzilla”. She even enjoyed “All Monsters Attack!” aka “Godzilla’s Revenge” (where footage from other films is integrated as dream sequences) because the narrative is about a boy figuring out how to deal with bullies.
Tomboy (2011) I loved “Portrait of a Lady on Fire” and the Criterion Channel had some of Céline Sciamma’s  older films available for streaming. Tomboy is about a ten-year-old who presents herself as a boy when her family moves to a new neighborhood.
Un Flic (1972) Jean-Pierre Melville’s final film. Alain Delon is a brute as the titular cop who suspects that he’s caught in a love triangle with a criminal mastermind. I loved the heist scenes, I loved the color palette.

“the producers changed the period to the 1930s. the premise now is that elizabeth is the daughter of wealthy socialite who falls in love with william, a smooth-talking gangster.” GUESS WHO FUKCING PUT TOGETHER A PLAYLIST FOR THE FICTIONAL CHARACTERS OF TWO NON-MAIN FICTIONAL CHARACTERS IN A FILM WE’LL NEVER SEE/READ ABOUT! GUESS! ME!!!!!!! also ksdkfhdskh i couldn’t find hq tracks from the 1930s so ummmm the music is anachronistic because UMMMM their love transcends time!!!! let’s go with that (listen)
ELIZABETH‘S POINT OF VIEW
+ superlove - charli xcx
you're whiskey-wasted and beautiful
dancing through the fire
you're such a vision to see
s.o.s.! this is real and this is dangerous
+ whistle - blackpink*
english translation
+ honey, honey - abba**
honey, honey, how you thrill me honey, honey, nearly killed me you look like a movie star but i know just who you are
+ kisses down low - kelly rowland***
;)
+ once more to see you - mitski
in the rearview mirror i saw the setting sun on your neck but with everybody watching... our every move we do have reputations
+ over the love - florence and the machine
now there's green light in my eyes and my lover on my mind and i sing from the piano tear my yellow dress and
WILLIAM’S POINT OF VIEW
+ nearly witches (ever since we met...) - panic! at the disco
i only shoot up with your perfume
ever since we met, i’ve got
just one regret to live through:
and that one regret is you
+ electric love - børns
every night my mind is running around her then it's getting louder and louder and louder baby, you're like lightning in a bottle i can't let you go now that i got it
+ nobody love - tori kelly****
i should be more cynical and tell myself it’s not okay (to feel this good when i’m with you) i try my best to fight it, say “i hate you” but i always stay ‘cause ain’t nobody love like you do
+ i told you i was mean (cover) - brooke bruce*****
i'll always be a bad, bad seed and you know you still bother because love is for the poor so i left you knocking outside my front door
+ true colours - studio killers
we’ll light up the darkness show me your true colours i'll embrace all the monsters in your closet
+ my heart’s always yours - arkells
all of my life, i'm never on time i keep waking up thinking, “goodbye, goodbye” now, if time is what it takes: i'll be here, it’s yours; my heart’s always yours
notes!
* it’s catchy and felicitous. i don’t necessarily headcanon elizabeth/cassandra as korean!
** i fuckign love abba sdghsfdkghdfg LET ME LIVE!!!! again, felicitous
*** a substantial portion of the songs here r angsty so have this fun sexy happy one
**** I DO NOT SUPPORT toxic, abusive relationships! “i hate you” as in william’s from-the-lower-socioeconomic-class has an aversion from everyone born rich in general or “proper-rich” folk, he h8s them, but he doesn’t verbally abuse elizabeth fuck no
***** AGAIN, i’ll die before i romanticize a toxic, abusive relationship! his “meanness” is merely the lack of refinement that tends to accompany growing up not-rich. GOD i know william x elizabeth takes minor character-ing to a whole new level but this is a very complex relationship in my mind i’ve got it deeply thought out i’m GON E! (IN MY DEFENSE pls replay the freshman book 2 there is CANON BASIS for all this e.g. elizabeth: “you see me and see everything u hate!” and william’s like “ya and everythin i love too lol”) a concise version: william fell into a life of crime because the “upper classes” oppressed him and his poverty-stricken family. i love william so much i’m going to cry he’s such a complex beautiful tragic character fuck my ass!!!!!!!! elizabeth is a wealthy socialite’s daughter; her family’s asian but hollywood pretends that in the 1930s racism against asians wasn’t a thing anymore bc does hollywood enjoy talking abt racism? lol no, but not really? also? elizabeth my darling is also very clearly oppressed in-universe and out-.  i love them i...... my oppressed honeys,,, they love each other so much #iconic !

so if Matty’s daughter is Matilda…
what about George’s stepdaughter and Ross’s daughter!!!👀👀👀👀👀
also would u be open to writing them at once? im just wondering no pressure obvs.
Ohhhhh I’ve had this answered for like a year lemme cook. I always use these names while writing and rereading tbh. I’ve just always had these in my head but I assumed everyone would hate that they have names???? Which I totally understand btw! Matilda has been the only names character so far but that was only been for like 2 fics. Anywhoooo. One person asked for this so this is my excuse to finally post it. This has Mattys daughter, mattys stepdaughter, George’s stepdaughter, and Ross’s daughter.
I’ve only written once very briefly for mattys daughter with Charlis daughter but I don’t think I would do one with alllllll of them. I don’t think my brain can take that responsibility.
Okay so here u go.
Matilda George Moss-Healy
Okay so as seen in "she's begging you to stay stay" Matilda's mother, Florence, named her after her father. Her intention was to have her nickname be "Matty" as a way of secretly being close to the father she never knew (until now) but everyone, including Florence herself, just ended up calling her "Tilly." "George" is obviously from George who was Florence's childhood best friend. When Matty gained legal custody of Matilda she gained his last name so it was "Moss-Healy" Matty offered to change it back to just "Moss" but she liked the way she had his name while still having a piece of her mother. In public or on Instagram though...she proudly puts her name down as "Matilda Healy."
Clara Leigh Bechtel-Healy
Clara is a name Gabby always had in mind for her children for when she got older. But when she got pregnant unexpectedly, it was the first name to come to mind. Leigh comes from Gabby's middle name, and they both took up the "Healy" name when Matty and her mom get married.
Emma May Aitchison-Daniel
“Emma May” was a combo Charli had loved since the beginning of her pregnancy. Even before she found out she was having a girl. She would call her by both names all the time. Even when she wasn’t in trouble which is what most parents tended to reserve the middle name for. Charli took “Daniel” as her last name when she got married and Emma did the same when George adopted her 2 months later. Emma and Clara have never taken their biological fathers last names.
Maise Eloise Macdonald
Ross was going back and forth on a couple of first name options but once he laid his eyes on her he decided “Maise” was the winner. It was just a name he liked but “Eloise” was actually suggested by Adam. They were all sat in the hospital taking turns holding and saying hi to little maise for the first time and they were also trying to help Ross come up with a middle name. Adam said “Eloise” out on nowhere and the room went silent. Ross knew it was the one.

Disco Shrine: The Liner Notes Interview
Tumblr media
The internet is weird.
Late last summer, I received an email from a guy named Scott Brown. I know alot of Browns in NWI, and one is named Scott. He runs a breakfast place in town, and his daughter is the Sweetheart of Downtown Valpo – my dear amiga CBB, and my best friend’s best friend.
I see Scott sorta regularly at Brown family events. Super nice guy, great dad, great grandpa. Quick with a handshake and a smile. We’re on good terms, but not like email tight. So why would he email me and title it “Inspiring New Visuals Indie Electro Artist”? Huh?
Different Scott Brown, turns out. The SB who emailed me promotes music. Here’s what he said (bold is him):
“Hi there,
We are excited to send you the new visuals by indie/electro pop artist Disco Shrine. Entitled “Up in the Air” the video and song narrate the struggle her parents faced when immigrating to America from Iran and is the perfect anthem for the current situation in America. Disco Shrine is also known as a sought after DJ and has toured extensively throughout the US, as well as having been featured in outlets such as The 405 and Earmilk, among others.
Thanks so much for watching and for your support!”
I immediately hit OM on Slack to ask if he had met a Mr. Brown at a blog conference or something. Nope. Apparently, Liner Notes crossed the radar of an A&R guy on the Left Coast. Not sure how, not complaining. Anyway, my brother’s grad school “partner-in-crime” is a badass woman of Iranian decent, and her parents immigrated to the U.S. around the time of the revolution there in the late ’70s. So I was intrigued enough to listen to “Up in the Air.” Glad I did.
Disco Shrine is the nom de musique of Jessica Delijani, and she, too, is a badass woman of Iranian descent. The email from SB called her the “pop spark plug behind Disco Shrine,” and added that she “makes music that plays around with the contrast between high energy electronic beats and sensual melodies.” More SB: “By embodying the mission of empowerment, Disco Shrine thrives off of being an outlet for listeners to be carefree, accepted, and liberated through dance music.” Great stuff, but enough mansplain. Let’s let Jessica talk about “Up in the Air” herself:
“This song is about my parents immigrating to America from Iran after escaping the Iranian revolution in the 70’s. ‘Up in the Air’ paints a picture of them literally up in the air on their plane ride over to America, leaving the past behind and looking towards their new future. It’s also symbolic of their whole lives suddenly being up in the air, uncertain, and not knowing what to expect at all.  It’s more so in my mother’s perspective and the strength she had to leave her whole life behind to bring a better life for her children and family. “
youtube
Jessica was born/raised in the San Fernando Valley, and grew up with watching traditional Persian jam sessions with her family. She taught herself how to play guitar and banjo, and started writing and performing folk music as a teenager, before debuting as Disco Shrine in 2015. I dropped a few DS songs on playlists last summer, and connected with her via Instagram. Eventually, I sent her some interview questions, which she was kind enough to answer.
JF: Hi. Before I get to real questions, I have a silly, preliminary one. What should I call you? Disco Shrine? DS? Jessica?
DS: Hey, Jason! People call me Jess and sometimes Disco. I answer to any and all, haha.
JF: Are you a lyric-first or a music-first person? Like do you find the melody, then put words to it, or vice versa?
DS: Honestly, I have worked both ways. I think I tend to come up with the melody first, and then lay out lyrics. But some of my favorite songs I’ve written have been when I have something I need to get out, and those lines or lyrics end up remolding the song.
JF: What’s your workflow?  Notebooks, voice memos, both?
DS: Millions and millions of voice memos and notepad (the app).
Tumblr media
JF: Where have you played? The email that I got from a PR guy mentioned “all of the quintessential LA landmarks” and some fests. Any shows or sets stick out?
DS: This year has been a wild year of checking venues off of my bucket list and some that I didn’t even know I wanted. I played Santa Monica Pier, which was crazy, because Santa Monica Pier was iconic for my parents, when they first immigrated here. So to see their daughter performing a big festival (Pier 360) was crazy for them and really special for me.
Playing Baby’s All Right in New York was also pretty magical. The crowd was so amazing and fun. I ended up crowd surfing and getting this gnarly scar on my leg … totally worth it.
I’ve also created this strange pattern of playing really unconventional places this year. I played this warehouse party where I performed on an old geometro car. I had my music video release party in a Barber Shop and I also threw my single release party for Everyday at a Laundromat.
I’ve also created this strange pattern of playing really unconventional places this year. I played this warehouse party, where I performed on an old Geo Metro car. I had my music video release in a barber shop, and I also threw my single release party for “Everyday” at a Laundromat.
The biggest reason behind doing this release party in a Laundromat is because of everything a laundromat is symbolic of (workin’ hard, the everyday hustle, helping local businesses, the fact that they’re usually immigrant owned or used, etc…)! I would never have had the same opportunities and freedom to pursue what I love, if my parents didn’t immigrate to America. “Everyday” is all about seizing that opportunity and not taking it for granted. And what better way to celebrate that than through a Laundromat Party!
I also just played at a large benefit festival called The Billy Ball with Charli XCX, Dorian Electra, Allie X, Vincent, Daya, Leland, Chester Lockhart, etc. All proceeds go towards helping a young artist get life saving cancer treatment. It was a dream come true playing in front of such a huge crowd of people that were so receptive, especially for such a good cause.
JF: Have you toured much? And what’s that like? What’s the life of a “indie/electro pop artist” on the road?  I’m imagining it’s you and tidy cases, and not so much instruments, cables, and speakers.
DS: I have toured and travelled a lot this year. Half of it has been for live shows, and the other half has been for DJing. It’s so much fun, and it feeds so much of my soul, but it definitely gets exhausting at times, too. What I love most about it is just connecting with the crowd and meeting people across the country. Whenever I play shows out of town, I usually keep the set up pretty minimal. It’s usually just me, a dj, and maybe back up dancers. I’ll have a live band for my hometown shows
JF: I dropped “Soft Fur” onto a recent playlist between Moses Sumney and Blood Orange – good company, haha. Who are your influences? Anybody you want to single out? I just checked out your Disco Diamonds playlist. I saw Empress Of on there, and her new record is great.
DS: Love both of them. It’s so hard to answer that question, because I feel like who I’m listening to is constantly changing, and I admire different things about different artists that help me grow. So it’s really not just any few people I take from. I think I tend to love and listen to a lot of badass pop artists like Empress Of, Elohim, Hayley Kyiko, etc. Some of my faves from this year are Dorian Electra, Phem, Holychild, Zella Day, Mallrat, and the queen Ariana Grande.
Gwen Stefani, circa No Doubt, is definitely my spirit animal on stage. I feel like I always tell myself to channel Gwen before I hit a stage.
JF: Genre-wise, how would you classify DS? What do you think about the state of electronic music? What do you find interesting, and what do you find boring? What would you change?
DS: I would say that I make really melodic, upbeat music that you can bob your head to on a drive or on a dance floor. I love that the sky is the limit right now. A lot of mainstream music is experimenting with genres and non-formulaic type pop, which I think is pretty cool, because it opens the door to experiment more – and, hopefully, makes people more open-minded.
JF: And what about the state of the music industry?
DS: Ugh, I can’t even with this …
Tumblr media
JF: Turning to “Up in the Air,” it’s obviously personal. Would you share some of your parents’ story?
DS: “Up in the Air” was written shortly after I found out about the crazy journey my parents went through to get my family to America. I was so inspired by the tale I heard, one that involved escaping prison, fleeing the country, and finding a way to get a greencard to America. I was in such disbelief that it was my mom and dad that did something so brave for the hope of a better future, and it really inspired me. That’s how “Up in the Air” was born. We wrote and finished it in an hour with my friend/producer Samuel Jacob Lopez, Jr. (coqui).
In a lot of ways it breaks my heart to think about other people trying to get to America and not being able to do so. Everyday I think about what my life would be like if I didn’t have the freedom and opportunities that I have. And it’s sad that there are others out there that are trying to have the same opportunities, but are being stopped.
JF: Favorite place in the world?
DS: Lake Como Italy was the most breathtakingly beautiful place I have ever been to, and it’s crazy that a place that looks that beautiful exists in this world. So, yes, Lake Como.
JF: You’re LA-based, so best restaurant in LA? Best bar in LA?
DS: My go-to spot is this amazing tex-mex brunch restaurant called Homestate in Los Feliz. Their breakfast tacos are bomb. They’re also right next to this coffee shop Go Get Em Tiger. Getting coffee their after breakfast tacos is sort of a Sunday morning ritual.
Fave bar is the secret tiki room at Cliftons in DTLA.
JF: Favorite food?
DS: Mexican food! Whenever I leave LA, I always find myself missing good Mexican food the most.
JF: Favorite and least favorite words?  For the latter, my best friend/wife would say “moist,” but that seems too easy.
DS: I just hung out with a bunch of my Australian friends – shoutout to Oh Boy, Tanssi, Lover, and Tekie. They’re amazing musicians, and they taught me so many Aussie phrases that I love. I think the one that stuck the most was “redhot”. It basically means sus or suspicious.
Tumblr media
JF: The new single, “Everyday,” with Omenihu just dropped. How did that collaboration come about?
DS: Omenihu and I met at School Night earlier this year. He photobombed a photo I was taking on the stairs, and we ended up laughing and talking for like an hour. He was living in Austin at the time and told me he was planning on moving to LA. We just got along really well and kept in touch over the next few months.
Then I ended up writing Everyday, which is all about moving to a new place and having all the odds against you, but persevering and taking advantage of the opportunities you have. And I knew I wanted Omenihu on it because he was going on the same journey – soon to move to LA in pursuit of his dreams and not knowing anyone here, facing challenges, etc. So the timing of it all was really perfect. I sent him the song, and he loved it and ended up sending me his verse back in a voice memo the same day. It was really serendipitous.
JF: What are you working on? New material? Shows? This is your chance to shamelessly  plug anything.
DS: Yess haha! I just threw my release party at a Laundromat in Los Feliz which featured special guests Wes Period (just toured w/ Macklemore and Kesha), Phem (just toured w/ Lil Xan), Dorian Electra (toured + featured w/ Charli XCX), Mood Killer, Dance Yourself Clean etc… Who are all artists I admire so much and are each killing it in their own lanes. Next year, I plan on releasing way more music and throwing even weirder release parties.
I have a show on 1/21 at The Echo too
Tumblr media
There you go. I’ve done four interviews with musicians so far on LN. All have been fun, but the first three were people that I know, so they were pretty easy. I stretched a bit to do this one, and Jess couldn’t have been nicer – reachable, relatable, and genuinely sweet. Big thanks to her, and best wishes for a huge 2019!!
You can check out Disco Shrine on Spotify. Here’s a playlist that I compiled of her material so far. It’s all good, and well worth your time.
