Black-Shouldered Drone Fly - Eristalis dimidiata
Seems I’m a bit nostalgic, revisiting insects that have had a limited showcase here. Thanks to the cold, there aren’t many insects outside at the moment, but this is an opportunity to flesh out some fascinating creatures, clear out the backlog and hopefully delight you with some nice pictures. As Picture 10 showcases, this insect is a small Fly in a large world. It’s just the right size to visit and pollinate the small flowers in nature, including the enticing goldenrod flowers which draws many visitors when in bloom. A familiar looking specimen, it’s a close relative of the Common Drone Fly and the Transverse Hoverfly. At a passing glance, it almost looks like a melanistic version of the latter with the identifiable (and characteristic) white lines around the abdomen. There’s a examples here that are slightly more golden than usual with some yellow near the abdomen. Variation like this truly highlights the similarities between the two Hoverflies, and while the Common Drone has a different abdomen pattern, the golden color is closer to that than the yellow of the Transverse Hoverfly. Like its aforementioned Eristalis relatives and most other Hoverflies, this insect relies on Bee mimicry in order to safely dart across and hover around flowers as it searches for nectar.
I’ve speculated before on what Bees it might mimic so I won’t cover that in this post (perhaps the Honeybee in Picture 9 is a mimic). What I will cover is the length of time that these insects remain active throughout the year based on the individuals I’ve found. May to August is a long time for activity, and apparently the duration can be even longer depending on the temperature and conditions of the region, even proceeding into the autumn months. Apparently they are among some of the first Flies to emerge in spring (presumably after overwintering as adults), and hopefully that time coincides directly with some flowers opening up. Alternatively, maybe the adults emerge to mate after winter and then find suitable egg locations for a summer generation? Pools of microorganism-filled water and moist decaying environments are plentiful after the snow melts. The summer generation has it made however: flowers aplenty, verdant foliage and a warming sun. Hmmm, perhaps the melanistic colors aid in the early emergence? If it can take in more warmth, the cold won’t slow it down.
Pictures were taken on May 4, July 2 and August 30, 2020 with a Google Pixel 4.

oh my god . okay i havent complained abt it in a while but since december 2021 when i got covid for the first* time (*you’ll see) ive been getting dizzy/lightheaded a lot, have random coughing fits, am even more sensitive to heat (i cant breathe in hot cars Like i start choking which was already a thing bc asthma but its worse now), and have frequently almost passed out after walking around for too long or just after standing up. (idk how many times ive actually passed out bc i cant remember really but its happened at least once). at first i chalked it up to Being Out Of Exercize and then i was like wait this isnt normal. and i wasnt eating well at the time and brushed it off as that but it continued even after i started eating somewhat better (altho it was a little less bad)
anyway eventually i was like yeah i probably have long covid or smth (also have pots symptoms guessing caused by covid) but i dont have a doctor (& dont know how to get one & dont have money & dont have transportation) so i havent been officially tested for anything
but the one thing that kept me from being like yes this is definitely bc of covid is in my senior year of highschool (started in sept 2020) (a year i have very few memories from so hard to compare symptoms) i remembered always being super out of breath + dizzy + lightheaded after walking up the stairs to my classes on the second floor. like id have to stand there for a second and breathe n shit and my friend was like “thats not good u should tell ur doctor” . but yeah i was like well maybe its just asthma and im exaggerating and its always been like this
WELL. i just remembered. in february 2020 i had this really awful cold. oone of the worst id ever had. coughing my fucking lungs up, couldnt breathe well, everytthing tasted weird. it lasted abt 2 weeks. You can see where this is goingg. i literally remember my mom saying like “wouldnt it be fucked up if tbat awful cold u had a couple months ago was covid” during like may2020.
and EARLY 2020 IS WHEN MY SYMPTOMS STARTED. and they got worse for a couple months and then stayed the same and i guess i got used to it UNTIL. i got covid in dec2021.
(ID: the “newsflash asshole” meme but the guy speaking has been edited over with a stick figure wearing a mask with wide eyes. the caption reads “newsflash asshole! it’s been long covid the entire goddamn time!” end ID)
#text#IM GONNA LOSE IT .#need to add ‘first covid infection’ to my List Of Big Things I Forgot About#health tag#<- new tag just dropped bc i know im gonna forget this revelation in like a week

Unless you’ve been in Nursing school, lived with someone who has been in nursing school, or are a Nurse, you will NOT understand what we go through. I wish schools offered orientation for families/friends so that they could hear directly from the nursing staff about all that comes with this program. No one understands because they think that if you’re smart you will make it, or if you study harder you’ll make it. Or question WHY you failed a test!! It’s not that simple. In this program you can study for three weeks straight, nonstop, and still fail! Does it mean you’re dumb? No! Does it mean you didn’t work hard or study hard? No! Does it mean you aren’t built to be a Nurse? Heck no! This stuff is hard, especially when every single answer to a question is correct. Nursing is Gray, not black and white, and that’s what makes it so difficult. I’m in this program with sooooo many Intelligent people who are failing right now. It’s heartbreaking...it’s painful...it’s stressful and so very draining. We all work SO hard. No one really understands the sacrifices that we make every single day, just to not see the benefits from it. All the hours of studying and not being able to be with your kids (I miss them and they live in the house with me), the awards ceremonies we miss, family functions we have to sit out of, and so much more. Nursing school is beyond demanding! The stress we endure on the daily is overwhelming and Its important for family and friends to understand this. We need the most support right now 😭. We are fighting for our lives everyday because this is our Dream, and we want this more than anything! This is a small sacrifice for a much larger reward in the end, and all we need is support while we reach our Goal. The best thing anyone can do for a Nursing student is offer help/support. Help with ANYTHING. Wash/dry a load of clothes for us, cook dinner for our families once in a while, take the kids for a weekend (or two), don’t be so hard on us (because we are dealing with enough stress), help us clean up (because that’s the last thing on our minds), but most importantly, PRAY for us 🙏🏽..
This is the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my 33 years of living. Somebody hold meeee 😩😭. #RoadtoRN #May2020
ETA: This is MY personal experience in nursing school. I can NOT speak on other career paths. I am sure that other career paths are hard, but Once again, I am speaking on MY OWN EXPERIENCE. It’s not meant to be disrespectful, rude, or insensitive to any other Careers out there, so don’t take it personal. That’s all.
‼️Update one yr later‼️ 🙌🏾I made it to the end. Allow me to reintroduce myself. My name Candace Hicks, RN 👩🏽⚕️

European Paper Wasp - Polistes dominula
Take good note of those warning stripes of black and yellow! They are a big and bright sign that says, “stay away please”. The workers of the paper colony are hard at work gathering food for themselves and the young larvae in the nest’s hexagonal cells, and they (the adults) don’t like to be disturbed as they fly around the gardens, neighborhoods and wilderness. It’s wise to not bother them and give them room to fly around, though from my experience they are more likely to flee away to another plant than buzz around a curious photographer. Calling back to the first post with these Wasps, they (to me) don’t seem as aggressive as other colony Wasps such as the similar looking Yellowjackets. Compared to that first post, there are a lot more closeups, fun angles and Wasps in odd places and hiding spots compared to last time, allowing us to take a deeper look at their habits and how they interact with their environment.
As mentioned earlier, though similar in appearance to Yellowjackets, you can tell these Paper Wasps apart from them by looking at their wings (at rest), their legs and antennae. The wings rest differently and are orange-tinted, as are the legs and antennae. When in flight the rear legs dangle, while Yellowjackets tuck their legs in while flying. As well, something I didn’t notice until looking at these images more closely is that the European Paper Wasp’s mandibles are black-colored and are reduced (almost beak like) compared to the Yellowjacket’s large serrated yellow mandibles. See for yourself. To be fair, the mandibles are hard to see directly when your focus drifts to the Wasp’s face and its abdominal stripes. Though it’s ok to feel scared by Wasps, we don’t have to demonize them and we can treat them as our insect friends, especially given they are very handy at eating pest species and helping to pollinate flowers. Let them have their airspace and you’ll discover many things of your own about them. If you get somewhat close, you should also keep this in mind: female European Paper Wasps tend to have straight antennae and shorter, wider abdomens than males (the latter’s antennae are usually hooked). You’ll really need to look closely...it’s not like looking at the Five-Banded Thynnid Wasp, which are much easier to tell apart.
Update (April 18, 2023): It’s come to my attention that this post came up just after the passing of renowned entomologist Justin Schmidt, creator of the Schmidt pain index and investigator of the mysteries of insects. May he rest in peace. This post’s timing was purely coincidental. If you seek more information regarding Dr. Schmidt on this blog, I refer you to a Wasp-Mimic post and my coverage on his 2016 book, The Sting of the Wild. Otherwise, I recommend you seek out his insect research literature or his many stories on insect stings.
Pictures were taken on May 31; June 6, 7 and 25; July 5, 10 and 28; and August 18, 2020 with a Google Pixel 4. I proclaim this: The Summer of Wasps

In the woods somewhere.
“Any patch of sunlight in a wood will show you something about the sun which you could never get from reading books on astronomy. These pure and spontaneous pleasures are ‘patches of Godlight’ in the woods of our experience.”
