Do Martian Mice sweat?
Today Eve decided to go into how do Martian Mice deal with thermal regulation of their bodies brought to you by a weird thought moment I had during writing a Charley X Vinnie bit.
From what I read Earth mice curiously don't sweat (like humans) nor do they pant (like dogs). They do have sweat glands on their feet but they don't use them for their controlling their body temperature but rather the traction or sticking to places better.
They do control their metabolism - when drinking a lot of water they also have a part of their brain that tells them to lower the metabolism and they become less active to preserve energy. (I am probably saying this in a very simplistic way in comparison to how it actually works lol still fascinating stuff).
An earth mouse can die in 99 degrees Fahrenheit (about 37 degrees Celsius) so they are really not heat (nor cold) resistant creatures. All this stuff from what I have gathered is due to their small size. When you are this tiny water economy within your body becomes very important.
But that isn't the case for Martian Cave Mice. They are size XLarge so to speak, around human or taller sized. They need a different mechanism for body heat control.
So I thought of something that is possible for them to thermoregulate.
They still posses large ears - extremity to release heat like in elephants perhaps? (It would cause them to be very rich in veins. Potentially risking significant/life threatening blood loss when damaged.)
The helmets most folk on Mars wear have exposed ears instead of full coverage (except the main trio). Probably to keep the ears letting out heat when adrenaline runs high?
I was thinking maybe their clothes being on more airy side but they seem to like leather- like trousers? Maybe they make up for it with the lack of shirts (looking at the main trio). And even military seems to prefer short sleeves attire with a few exceptions? It would makes sense also why a motorbike would also be logical option of modern transport (one being the terrain being difficult after the Plutarkian war for anything 4-wheely). The wind during the motorcycle ride would be a cool (hehe) way to cool off as well.
Then I got thinking on how it might affect their cultural/social life and architecture.
The Martian Mice probably also enjoy spending days in shadow rather full sun. I don't think they would be fans of sunbathing (unless it was colder season). Cuddle piles among family and friends are probably common. At least maybe during peaceful times more than during wartime.
Since they are Cave Mice I was thinking also there might be communal spaces underground to hanging out and cooling off during hotter seasons. Like a reverse igloo to keep the cooler air in and release the heat above ground mixed with your local town park/aquapark lol. Just a hub connecting different cave systems/homes.
I think panting we see in dogs would be a sign of early stages of overheating as well.
I wonder if it means that any sign of fever requires an ice bath...
Anywho this was me having thoughts.
Toodles
Tagging those who seems to be interested in BMFM lol lemme know if you rather I didn't or if you do want to be added here @sharpwindow @thelaundrybitch @ninjaintheshadow

I have a question about the smudge elephants, if I understand correctly the large size has been retired but the medium is still available. Is the medium size worth it, do you think? Or should I go for a Huggady instead? I have trouble visualizing the listed sizes and haven’t had much luck finding comparison photos. I really love the design of the smudge elephant but I want something that will be a good size for cuddling while I sleep! I adore my medium rose dragon but I’ve found she’s a little too small for my tastes to hug comfortably when I’m sleeping. Actually, any recommendations you have for a bigger cuddle-sized jellycat that will hold up to nightly hugs would be great!
If you want something bigger than the medium size Rose Dragon, I do not recommend medium Smudge Elephant! The large size has indeed been retired (as has the tiny one), but you might find him on platforms like Ebay and people within the Jellycat Instagram community are sometimes selling one, too! If you want the account names for that, just send me a private message on here! You can also ask the question for a large Smudge Elephant on the Jellycat Reddit.
However, no matter where you find him he will likely be more a lot more expensive than the original retail price because he's retired and very popular. If that turns you off of it(understandable), I would try and find a Large Huggady instead.
Finally and perhaps most importantly, you said you wanted a Jellycat that will hold up to nightly hugs. I wanted to mention that all of the big cats in the large size are wonderful to sleep with! They are longer and broader than a medium dragon and have more weight to them. I also feel like their shape is just perfect for hugging at night! So if big cats are your thing, choose from one of the felines below😉

Les Misérables 280/365 -Victor Hugo
BOOK ELEVENTH THE ATOM FRATERNIZES WITH THE HURRICANE
271
The insurrections started to advance following the hearse at the head, the ranks were shaken and fled. At that time a ragamuffin child took a pistol with no trigger from a show window, a few minutes later he was singing about frightened bourgeoise. After helping his father that night he went back to the elephant, gave his two brothers food and left them to the street that raised him, giving them a spot to meet up but the two didn’t return and Gavroche wondered about it for twelve weeks. “The lowest depths of the actual social world are full of these lost traces.”p.679 (how many stories abruptly ended) In Rue Saint-Louis, Gavroche tore down theatre posters and spits at fat rich people.
272
He brandishes his triggerless pistol, he’s had enough despotism, he helped a fallen National Guard right his horse and continued on in the apathy. Four decrepit gossipers, three portresses and a rag picker, they discuss the paper, once it reported how many stray dogs there were and old kings, now things are so poor and expensive, no one throws out anything anymore. (2023 feels ya) Gavroche asks why they’re talking politics; he bites his thumb at them (like flipping the bird) when they are rude to him. They comment there’s evil about, pistols everywhere after things started to get peaceful again. “You’re in the wrong to insult the revolutionists, Mother Dust-Heap-Corner. This pistol is in your interests. It’s so that you may have more good things to eat in your basket.”p.681
273
The hairdresser who chased Gavroche’s two brothers off was shaving an old Empire soldier and talking of Lamarque’s death and the riots. The soldier said the emperor didn’t know how to fall, so didn’t, he had a fine white horse. As a veteran, he was wounded in many battles including Waterloo. The hairdresser thinks it’s better to die quick in battle than bit by bit by illness when the window exploded from a rock Gavroche threw and the hairdresser laments what has anyone done to him, (really you don’t know) he just does mischief for pleasure.
274
In Marche Saint-Jean, Gavroche met with Enjorlas and his friends, they were armed and Gavroche had him come along to Quai Morland. The bourgeoise cried in fear at Bahorel’s scarlet waistcoat, Gavroche studied Bahorel as Enjorlas warned him about wasting supply. Bahorel mentioned Herde, that was on a poster he tore down and asked what it meant, dog in Latin. More students, artisans, laborers and such joined them and an unarmed old man, Mabeuf.
275
Enjorlas and his friends were on Boulevard Bourdon when the dragoons made their charge. They fled to the barricades and Courfeyrac recognised Mabeuf stumbling in the street and warned him to go home but he followed them not saying a word or taking arms as he advanced to the front rank and Gavroche made his way to the front too and sang of Charley asking Charlotte when to go to the forest.
276
A man whose hair was turning gray joined them, Courfeyrac remarked on it but Gavroche didn’t pay attention. (wonder who this could be) Courfeyrac left to retrieve his hat and purse and hid a coffer on his person. A portress called out to him that someone wanted to talk to him, a youthful artisan in tattered clothes wants to know where Marius is and when told he doesn’t know they followed Courfeyrac to the barricade. (wonder who this could be) He gave someone his coffer as the mob didn’t know what to do next in Rue Saint-Denis.
BOOK TWELFTH CORINTHE
277
Now a days, Parisians notice on the right, opposite of Rue Mondetour, a sign of Napoleon. A terrible scene witnessed thirty years ago, a public house. Corinthe, the obscure barricade of Rue de la Chanvrerie a labyrinth of four streets, seven islands of houses, cut up narrow streets, Rue Saint-Denis was a funnel leading to the other streets and taverns. Corinthe was a popular wine house and Hucheloup also offered food, a specialty of stuffed carps. The labyrinth was opened in 1847 and probably no longer exists now, Rue de la Chanvrerie and Corinthe disappeared under Rue Rombuteau. Corinthe was a meeting place of Courfeyrac and his friends, Grantaire discovered, it they paid badly if at all but were welcome, (they didn’t pay and they allow them to come and eat free food and down bottles of wine how did they not go out of business) in 1830 Hucheloup died, the cooking deteriorated and the bad wine worse, but Courfeyrac and his friends still went. (still free food and wine) The restaurant hall had tables and chairs lighted by one window (oh oh I know where this is going) served by window Hucheloup and two girls, Matelote and Gibelotte.
278
Laigle lived with Joly (they were roomates) and did everything in common, on June 5th they went to Corinthe for breakfast and Grantaire joins them with wine, two bottles and Laigle teases him for it. Laigle says they just saw the head of the procession; the street is so quiet. Grantaire complains of the food and servants, he hates the human race, he drinks more and goes on a tangent of revolutions, law, how he would lead straightforward, progress advances by men and events, everything is in disorder. (two page rant) Human and royal destiny worn and threadbare, he sees so much misery, God can't be rich, a poverty-stricken universe, creation bankrupt, it’s why he’s discontented, maybe daylight won’t come. He speaks without evil intent, he was born for other positions, people are too hard on Turks, Mohammed had his points. It appears they are going to massacre each other, it’s time to enlighten the human race. “People strive, turn each other out, prostitute themselves, kill each other, and get used to it!”p.693
He went on about Marius in a vapor of his love affair, he’s of the poet race. He was on his second bottle when a child entered looking for Bossuet, (Laigle’s other name remember cause I forgot) Laigle asks what does he want, to pass on the message ABC. Laigle has the two lend him a twenty-sou piece and paid the boy Navet (Gavroche’s friend) who has to join the procession to shout Down with Polignoc! Grantaire starts talking about Gamins when Laigle interrupted, it was a warning of the burial of Lamarque, Grantaire doesn’t think much of revolution and continues to drink and declare he won't go. The three drank past noon and turned Grantaire back towards cheerfulness when they heard the call to arms in the streets and their friends called to Courfeyrac to build a barricade there.
279
Corinthe was an obstacle, Rue Mondetour easily barricaded, the only possible attack was right in sight at Rue Saint-Denis. There was terror of the mob, people fled buildings shut up as things were torn up to bar the street. “There is nothing like the bond of the populace for building everything that is built by demolishing.”p.696 Omnibuses weren't allowed entry as Grantaire makes an ass of himself and Enjorlas tells him to go off, don’t disgrace the barricade (Don’t Let The Wine Go To Your Brains~), it sobered up Grantaire and asks to sleep there to die. Enjorlas doubts he’s capable of even dying, Grantaire tells him he’ll see. (oooh hm this is gonna hurt)
280
Courfeyrac demolished the wine shop telling window Hucheloup it was to her benefit which she doubted. When the rain stopped barrels of powder were brought and torches. Enjorlas, Courfeyrac and Combeferre directed the construction of more barricades with their motley crew. (saw a poll out of 3,714 votes of material to build a barricade 24.1% threw in coffins) “One would have pronounced them brothers, but they did not know each other’s names. Great perils have this fine characteristic, that they bring to light the fraternity of strangers.”p.698 The lofty gray-haired man helped to build a barricade and so was Gavroche and the man who asked for Marius disappeared. Gavroche went about in readiness in joy telling them to booby trap with glass and he wants a real gun if Enjorlas dies before him he’ll take his. (I like Gavroche he’s a little shit)

Before leaving the subject of elephants inside or outside the room....
I suggested that Avatar be in a category of its own. Back in 1929, the Academy agreed sorta.
They didn't know what to make of the Jazz Singer so they gave it an honorary award for "revolutionizing the industry". Yeah, give Cameron that award and keep him out of the other categories.
They also gave an honorary award to Charley Chaplin in what amounted to a career award. Now a days, we've repackaged that award and turned it into Best Actor, Actress etc.
Keep it an honor not an award.
I love the Dude and Brendan and Jamie Lee but let's face it.....
And if you wanna give Speilberg an honor for his career just give it to him and don't nominate him for self-serving crap like The Fablemans at the same time as you're snubbing Buzz Luhrman and James Cameron.
Back in 1929, they split the top prize in two; one for the "most outstanding motion picture production considering all elements that contribute to a picture's greatness ( without a clarifying rubric detailing the elements that went into 'greatness') and the other to be awarded to the "most unique, artistic, worthy, and original production without reference to cost or magnitude".
In other words big-budget blockbusters and small art films. All the Academy Award winners at the inaugural ceremony held on May 16, 1929, were silent movies. The awards were given for films released between August 1, 1927, and July 31, 1928.
Wings, which was the most expensive movie of its time won Best Picture and Sunrise won most artistic picture.(although any clarifying rubric for 'art' has never been established Thank God)
The 1929 ceremony honored films that were released during the transition period between silent films and sound films, so some of the films nominated and awarded may have had sound elements, such as synchronized music or sound effects, but they were not "talkies" in the modern sense.
All of them were silent.
But the elephant was in the room.
The next year, all of the movies nominated for the Awards were talkies.
Her'e the deal...when you see an elephant in the room that everybody's trying to ignore....get ready for a pacheydrmal stampede from the outside in that will change everything, everywhere, all the time.
Best Picture: "Wings" (1927)
Best Director: Lewis Milestone for "Two Arabian Knights" (1927) and "The Racket" (1928)
Best Actor: Emil Jannings for "The Last Command" (1928) and "The Way of All Flesh" (1927)
Best Actress: Janet Gaynor for "Seventh Heaven" (1927), "Street Angel" (1928), and "Sunrise" (1927)
It's worth noting that the 1929 ceremony honored films that were released during the transition period between silent films and sound films, so some of the films nominated and awarded may have had sound elements, such as synchronized music or sound effects, but they were not "talkies" in the modern sense.
The restoration of silent films is a critical issue for film preservationists and historians. Many silent films have been lost or damaged over time, and it is essential to preserve what remains of them for future generations. However, the restoration of these films presents several challenges.
One of the primary challenges is the deterioration of the film material. Silent films were typically shot on nitrate-based film stock, which is highly flammable and prone to deterioration. As a result, many films have suffered from physical damage, including warping, cracking, and fading. Additionally, some films have been lost due to poor storage conditions or intentional destruction.
Another challenge is the loss of accompanying soundtracks. Many silent films were originally shown with live music accompaniment, but the soundtracks have not survived or were never recorded. This loss of the original musical accompaniment can impact the viewing experience and the interpretation of the film's meaning.
Fortunately, there are several solutions to these problems. One solution is the use of digital restoration techniques. This involves scanning the original film and using computer software to correct the damage, such as repairing scratches and restoring faded colors. Digital restoration can also help to recreate missing intertitles and other text-based elements of the film.
Another solution is the creation of new musical accompaniments. Many contemporary musicians have composed new scores for silent films, based on the original musical styles of the time period. These new scores can enhance the viewing experience and provide a new interpretation of the film's meaning.
In addition to these solutions, it is also crucial to improve preservation efforts for existing films. This includes proper storage conditions and the development of strategies for identifying and locating lost films.
Overall, the restoration of silent films is a challenging but critical task for film preservationists and historians. Through digital restoration techniques, the creation of new musical accompaniments, and improved preservation efforts, we can continue to enjoy these important pieces of cinematic history for years to come.
[email protected] Has the film Wings survived. Wings won the first academy award for best picture Yes, the film Wings has survived and is still available for viewing today. In fact, it is considered a classic of American cinema and is widely regarded as one of the most significant films of the silent era.
Wings was released in 1927 and won the first Academy Award for Best Picture in 1929. The film tells the story of two World War I fighter pilots who fall in love with the same woman. The film was directed by William A. Wellman and starred Clara Bow, Charles "Buddy" Rogers, and Richard Arlen.
Despite its significance, Wings was thought to be lost for many years until a complete print was discovered in the Cinémathèque Française film archive in 1992. The film was then restored by the Academy Film Archive and premiered at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 2012, with a new score by composer J.S. Zamecnik.
Since then, Wings has been widely available for viewing on home video and streaming platforms. It is a fascinating piece of cinematic history and an important part of the development of American cinema.
[email protected] What other film was awarded best picture at the first Academy awards…didn't they split the best picture into two categoies awards Yes, at the first Academy Awards ceremony in 1929, the Best Picture category was not split into two categories as it is today. Instead, there was only one award for Outstanding Picture, which went to the film "Wings," as you mentioned in your previous question.
It wasn't until 1932 that the Academy introduced a separate category for Outstanding Production, which was intended to recognize smaller budget films. This category was later renamed to Best Picture, and in 1944, the Academy introduced a new category for Best Story, which was later renamed to Best Original Screenplay.
So, to answer your question, at the first Academy Awards ceremony, "Wings" was the only film to be awarded Best Picture. It wasn't until several years later that the Academy introduced additional categories to recognize different aspects of filmmaking, such as budget size and screenwriting.

[email protected] what about the use of similes and metaphors The use of similes and metaphors can enhance the quality of writing and help convey meaning and emotion to the reader. However, it's important to use them appropriately and effectively.
Here are some criteria you could use to evaluate the use of similes and metaphors in writing:
Relevance: Are the similes and metaphors relevant to the topic or idea being discussed? Do they add meaning or depth to the writing? Clarity: Do the similes and metaphors clarify or confuse the meaning of the writing? Do they make the writing more or less clear? Creativity: Are the similes and metaphors creative and original, or are they clichéd or overused? Appropriateness: Are the similes and metaphors appropriate for the audience and context of the writing? Are they appropriate for the tone and style of the writing? Consistency: Are the similes and metaphors consistent with the tone and style of the writing? Do they fit well with the overall theme or message of the writing? Overall, the use of similes and metaphors can be a powerful tool for writers, but they should be used thoughtfully and purposefully to enhance the meaning and impact of the writing.
[email protected] What award did Sunrise get at the first awards show The movie "Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans" was not nominated for the first Academy Awards held in 1929. The film was released in 1927, but it was not eligible for the first Academy Awards, which only included films released between August 1, 1927, and July 31, 1928.
However, "Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans" is considered a classic of the silent film era and has since been recognized for its artistic merit. In 1989, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."
[email protected] who directed Sunrise "Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans" was directed by German director F.W. Murnau. Murnau was a prominent figure in the German Expressionist movement and is considered one of the greatest directors of the silent film era. He directed several other notable films, including "Nosferatu" (1922) and "The Last Laugh" (1924).
[email protected] was there an award called Best Unique and Artist Picture which was won by Sunrise with the Crowd as honorable mention Yes, that's correct. At the first Academy Awards ceremony in 1929, the award for "Best Unique and Artistic Picture" was given to "Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans." Additionally, the movie "The Crowd" received an Honorary Award for "Unique and Artistic Production," which was not a competitive award, but rather a special award given at the discretion of the Academy's Board of Directors. Both films were directed by F.W. Murnau and were praised for their artistic and technical achievements.
[email protected] wasn't The Crwod directed by King Vidor You are correct, my apologies for the mistake. "The Crowd" was directed by King Vidor, not F.W. Murnau. "The Crowd" was a critically acclaimed film that was known for its innovative use of camera techniques and its realistic portrayal of urban life in America. At the first Academy Awards in 1929, "The Crowd" was not nominated for Best Picture, but it did receive a special award for "Unique and Artistic Production," which was not a competitive award but rather a special award given at the discretion of the Academy's Board of Directors.
[email protected] did charley Chaplin and the Jazz Singer win awards at the first academy awards banquet No, Charlie Chaplin and "The Jazz Singer" did not win any awards at the first Academy Awards banquet in 1929.
Charlie Chaplin's film "The Circus" was actually nominated for several awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Original Screenplay, but ultimately it did not win any awards. However, in 1972, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awarded Chaplin an Honorary Award for "the incalculable effect he has had in making motion pictures the art form of this century."
"The Jazz Singer" was released in 1927 and was not eligible for the first Academy Awards, which only included films released between August 1, 1927, and July 31, 1928. It is worth noting, however, that "The Jazz Singer" is often credited with ushering in the era of sound in motion pictures and had a significant impact on the film industry.
[email protected] Didn't the Board give two special prizes…one to Charley Chaplin for the Circus and th eother to Warner Brothers for The Jazz Singer You are correct, my apologies for the mistake. At the first Academy Awards banquet in 1929, the Board of Directors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences did award two Special Awards in addition to the competitive awards.
One Special Award was given to Charlie Chaplin for "versatility and genius in writing, acting, directing and producing 'The Circus.'" Although "The Circus" did not win any competitive awards, Chaplin was recognized for his contributions to the film industry.
The other Special Award was given to Warner Bros. for "producing 'The Jazz Singer,' the pioneer outstanding talking picture, which has revolutionized the industry." As you mentioned, "The Jazz Singer" was not eligible for any competitive awards at the first Academy Awards ceremony because it was released before the eligibility period.
[email protected] what was the special Award for the Jazz singer At the first Academy Awards ceremony in 1929, Warner Bros. was given a Special Award for "producing 'The Jazz Singer,' the pioneer outstanding talking picture, which has revolutionized the industry." This award was not a competitive award, but rather a special award given at the discretion of the Academy's Board of Directors.
"The Jazz Singer" was the first feature-length motion picture with synchronized sound, and its success paved the way for the widespread adoption of sound in the film industry. The film starred Al Jolson and was released in 1927, but it was not eligible for any competitive awards at the first Academy Awards ceremony because it was released before the eligibility period.
[email protected] Is today's Best Picture Award split int two categories No, today's Best Picture Award is not split into two categories. The Academy Awards for Best Picture is a single award that honors the best film of the year, regardless of genre.
However, in the past, the Academy has experimented with different approaches to the Best Picture category. For example, from 1927 to 1929, the award was called "Outstanding Picture" and was given to one film each year. In 1930, the Academy introduced the concept of separate awards for "Outstanding Production" and "Best Picture, Unique and Artistic Production," but this only lasted for one year.
In recent years, the Academy has occasionally expanded the number of nominees for Best Picture beyond the traditional five nominees, allowing for up to ten nominees in some years. This was done to increase the diversity of the nominees and to recognize a wider range of films. However, there is only one award given for Best Picture each year.

💭Still hanging onto the coattails of 2022, I am reluctant to say goodbye. After Covid, January feels too early to celebrate. March, people, March- that seems safe to decide the flavour of 2023.  George Orwell’s collection of Essays was an experience similar to reading Steinbeck’s Travels With Charley (If you haven’t read it, I recommend it)- the writing is taut, no frivolity of either words or ideas. The breadth of the collection isn’t limited to literature- it is decidedly political. His views about the Spanish Civil War, the politics of the English language take care of that. For someone who gravitates more towards the personal experience of living, Orwell’s memories of public school horrors (Such, Such Were The Joys), his account of ‘Shooting An Elephant’ as a police officer in Burma, and a not-so-brief discussion on Charles Dickens are uncompromising and entertaining. I favoured ‘Books Vs. Cigarettes’ & ‘Why I Write’ the most- two delightful compositions. The first is his proof through which he justifiably demonstrates that owning books isn’t an expensive hobby- the price of books is far less than the value one gets from them. ‘Why I Write’- well, why does anyone write? It’s a quirk of nature- like being right-handed or having a painful wart. But returning to Orwell: he takes us on his writing journey in a few words- “I wanted to write enormous naturalistic novels with unhappy endings, full of detailed descriptions and arresting similes, and also full of purple passages in which words were used partly for the sake of their sound.” Listen, just read that essay- it's insightful and honest, and if I were to talk about it more, I’d end up letting all the cats out. If you liked this, read: •Giving Up The Ghost •The Source of Self Regard-equally political and entertaining •What I Talk About When I Talk About Running •Slouching Towards Bethlehem •The View From The Cheap Seats #georgeorwell #nonfictionreads #shootinganelephant #nonfictionbookclub #nonfictionreads #essaycollection #delhireader #delhibookstagrammer (at India) https://www.instagram.com/p/CnOUy1IL_FE/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Episode Review: ‘Wizard City’ (Distant Lands, Ep. 4)
Tumblr media
Airdate: September 2, 2021
Story by: Adam Muto, Jack Pendarvis, Kate Tsang, Hanna K. Nyström, & Charley Feldman
Storyboarded by: Maya Petersen, Hanna K. Nyström, Anna Syvertsson, & Aleks Sennwald, & Haewon Lee
Directed by: Miki Brewster & Jeff Liu (supervising), Sandra Lee (art)
An episode focusing on Peppermint Butler’s dark side is something that the fandom has craved ever since the little guy demanded Finn and Jake’s flesh in season two’s “Death in Bloom.” While installments like season five’s “The Suitor” and season six’s “Nemesis” did much to scratch that itch, the story of the Dark One remained mostly unknown…
And after “Wizard City,” it still remains largely unknown. But that’s OK, because instead of focusing on the character’s history, this special focuses on Peps’ quest to relearn magic at a magic school. Put most simply, this special is largely a fun excuse for the show to riff on Harry Potter and The Owl House-style “magic school hijinks,” and it mostly all works.
The special follows Peps quest to go to WizArts (a definite play on CalArts, the school that Pen Ward and Adam Muto, among many others, went to) so that he can relearn magic and once again become one of the greatest dark wizards of his time. Initially, Peps tries to make friends with cool kid Spader and his posse, but once they learn that Peps is not as talented at magic as they had initially thought, they kick him to the curb. It is at this point that Cadebra, Abracadaniel’s adorkable niece who is fascinated with stage magic, enters the picture. Cadebra tries everything in her power to befriend Peps, but Peps pushes back, since she’s not “cool.” It does not matter, though, because both Peps and Cadebra are sorted into the same “house”—the “Skink House—and are forced to work together.
While Peps and his cohort begin learning more and more complex magic, a secret cult of school professors, led by the otherwise caring Dr. Caledonius, are scheming to resurrect Coconteppi, a powerful dark wizard whose putrid heart has been discovered underneath the school excreting a very powerful ichor. The school cult kidnaps Spader and gives him some of the ichor to drink; they hope that because of his talent, he will be able to house the spirit of Coconteppi. This does not go as planned, and Spader is graphically killed (albeit off screen). (In a more humorous moment, Bufo, the scam wizard from season one’s “Wizard,” also ingests some of the ichor, believing himself powerful enough to handle it, but it kills him.)
Eventually Peps and Cadebra learn what is going on. Dr. Caledonius welcomes Peps, believing that he is strong enough to handle the ichor. When Cadebra’s life is put in danger, Peps reluctantly gives the putrid fluid a swig, which infuses him with the power of Coconteppi. Coconteppi-Peps then kills all the cult members before Cadebra manages to remove the ichor from Peps body. For uncovering a heinous plot, Peps is promoted to the highest house, “Salamander,” but he decides to remain a Skink and learn magic “the hard way” with Cadebra as his friend.
As I mentioned near the start of this review, “Wizard City” spends most of its time riffing on the “magic boarding school” trope, with much of the episode feeling like a light-hearted parody of Harry Potter: The characters, after all, are “sorted” into “houses,” they learn various types of magic from skilled “professors,” and they bunk in different parts of a large castle-like campus. Of course, Harry Potter didn’t invent the idea of a boarding school, but when setting your story in a school for magic, it is very hard not to lean at least somewhat into the Hogwarts relation. And this really is a double-edged sword, for while Harry Potter references can be fun here and there, they can also make the overall story feel like a fanfic parody. This special does a good job focusing more so on the characters rather than the setting, but I won’t lie, at times it did feel as if they show was really trying to make you realize it was making a Harry Potter joke.
Of all the characters introduced in the special, the breakout star is easily Cadebra, voiced by Chloe Coleman. Radiating a sort of Mabel Pines energy, Cadebra is the beam of optimism who shines brightly in an otherwise macabre special. There is something about her plucky personality and sense of wacky individualism that charms the viewer. I appreciate how the show compared and contrasted her with her uncle, the one and only Abracadaniel: like her uncle, Cadebra is a good person who wants to help others, but unlike Abracadaniel, she has a sense of courage and fortitude that results in her taking on a Coconteppi-possessed Peps at the episode’s climax. (Say what you will, Abracadaniel stans, but our favorite custodian would never have done that!) Thanks to her bravery and dedication to Peps, Cadebra is easily the heart of the special.
The episode throws an interesting little curveball into the mix by having the ‘ghost’ of Past Peppermint Butler constantly haunt Peps in the here-and-now. Past Peppermint, it seems, was so determined to become a great wizard, he cursed himself, so that if anything were to go awry, his Past self could materialize and set him straight. It’s confusing, but I do think that mixing the “overbearing parent” trope with a curse is a clever idea; it gives the whole special some dramatic heft. The whole setup is made even funnier by the special’s conclusion: After Future Peppermint Butler is ‘defeated’ and the day is saved, Peps reveals to Cadebra that he still wants to be a great and powerful dark wizard… but he wants to earn that power through hard work and determination. (Peppermint Butler might commune with demons, but he would never sell his soul to one for power; Glob helps those who help themselves, ya know?)
One of the special’s strongest points is its background art. Adventure Time always had some beautiful set pieces, and this special goes above and beyond to give WizArts an ancient sense of grandeur and mystery. Ghostshrimp, a freelance artist who was the show’s lead background designer during seasons 1-4, return for this special as a “visual developer”—basically, he mocked up a bunch of rough designs for the locales, and then the episode’s background artists worked up the final pieces in his style. On his podcast, Ghostshrimp mentioned how hectic he found Adventure Time to be, because he was used to taking his time on pieces. As such, the decision to bring him on for just development was smart, as it allowed him to still come up with iconic background designs while also playing fast and loose with everything. Hopefully the show will continue this approach with the Fionna and Cake miniseries that is coming up. After all, Ghosthsrimp’s style is the look of Adventure Time.
Another strong point for the episode is its voice acting. For one thing, you have your regulars like Tom Kenny and Dana Snyder, and Duncan Trussell, who all give a solid performance. But to voice many of the special’s new characters, the show brought on a bevy of fun actors: Saturday Night Live’s Bill Hader, for instance, is now voicing Bufo, and he does a solid job hamming up his role as the old fogey. And then there’s Toks Olagundoye, whose British accent gives Dr. Caledonius a sense of knowledge and expertise. To my delight and surprise, SungWon Cho, an internet personality and voice actor perhaps better known as ProZD, was tapped to voice Brain Wizard, and he does an excellent job. And finally, Anthony Stewart Head, a very talented actor who I know best as Giles from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, voices Con Wizard, and is even given a fun little ditty to sing. I can safely say that the voice acting in this special is likely the best of the bunch, and it’s obvious that the actors were all having a great time playing their parts.
What drags the whole thing down, in my opinion is the excessive murder. (I joked on Twitter that during the climax of “Wizard City,” it felt like I was watching an Adventure Time-ified version of Invincible!) Infused with the power of Coconteppi, Peps goes on a brutal killing spree, boiling Potable Wizard into steam, zapping Dimension Wizard into another plane of existence, smashing Berdzerd, and—perhaps most graphically—excerebrates (had to look that word up!) Brain Wiz. On Twitter, @sometipsygnostalgic argued that while, yes, the scene is startling, it does wonders to transmute “a poor Summer Camp Island knockoff [into] Adventure Time chaos.” The more I think about it, the more I think that’s a fair point; after all, this is hardly the first dark thing that has happened in Adventure Time. But the part that I cannot really stomach is the fact that Spader was murdered for no real reason, and the special ends without anyone really expressing their horror at the situation. Sure, Spader was a schoolyard bully, but he was also a child. And killing a child—either for the drama or the lulz—feels decidedly out of place in an Adventure Time episode. It’s hard to express, but it just felt unnecessarily nihilistic and mean-spirited.
All things considered, I think this was a fun episode, but it was somewhat underwhelming for a ‘finale.’ Much of this is because it had to air after the perfection that was the back-to-back “Obsidian”/”Together Again” wombo combo. But I can’t help but feel like this special just felt a little... off. A little too meanspirited, and it leaned a bit too much on standard tropes. Still, it was a fun spin, and I know that I’ll rewatch it.
Mushroom War Evidence: As Peps rides the bus to school, he passes a bunch of abandoned houses, some of which are buried in the ground. There is an unexploded bomb above the fossilized elephant in the school. Cadebra has a dream that takes place in the ruins of a city.
Final Grade: B+

CATSM: RE-INK'D (Chapter 3: Part 1)
🏴‍☠️
The Voice Of Henry Stein
Only two weeks into this company, and already it's gotten interesting.
Joey is a man of ideas, and only ideas.
When I agreed to start this whole thing with him, I thought there'd be a little more give and take.
Instead I give, and he takes. I haven't even seen Linda for days now.
Still, someone has to make this happen. When in doubt, just keep drawing, Henry.
On the plus side, I got a new character I think people are going to love.
----------------------------------------
Above all else, Henry hoped this was a dream.
He was hoping that Joey ended up forgetting he existed, and he never got that stupid letter in the mail.
He was hoping that he didn't really see a corpse, a monster, several more smaller monsters, ANOTHER dead body, and some drug addict cultist.
And he was especially hoping that he didn't just meet one of the people who was supposed to be one of the corpses from earlier.
Yes, when he woke up, he would be back home, in his bed, with his wife and daughter waiting for him......
...
Henry opened his eyes, and saw the exact opposite of that.
"....Well, shit. This is real. Okay. Cool. Mhm. Yep. Nnnnnnot distressing at all."
He sat up and rubbed his forehead, taking in his new surroundings once more. He was sitting on a cot of some sort- Why does Joey even need a cot?- in a small room. A hammock hung in one part of the room, and when he looked to his left, he was greeted by one of the posters he saw before. 'Sailor Sillies'. Now that one I remember.
He got up and made him way out of the room, going to the end of the hallway and looking to his right.
There, at a table, sat Barley. He was leaned over and staring off into the distance, barely noticing Henry as he walked into the area.
Henry grabbed the ukulele next to him, and sat down in the chair across from the sailor, making him nearly spring out of his seat upon noticing him.
"AH! Y-You're- You're awake! I-"
"What, you thought I died?"
"N-NO! Of course not..." He looked away for a minute. "...Well, maybe I did, a little bit...."
"Well, I did pass out in front of you, so I guess I can't blame you."
Henry leaned back and strummed a few sour notes. "This thing's tiny."
"Well, I'm not a very big...uh....'person'." Barley nodded his head to the instrument. "....Can I have it back?"
Henry handed it back to him, who carefully set it down next to him. "...I've got a million questions ever since I've walked through that studio door, and I think you can answer a few of them."
Barley looked up at Henry with a perplexed expression and pointed at himself. "M-Me??"
"You're the talking cartoon character over here."
The cartoon sighed. "I hate answering questions....Fine. What do you want?"
"First of all, let's talk about the elephant in the room. How in the hell are you here in the first place?"
Barley froze up. "....Well...I.....I don't...."
"You certainly know, with the way you're acting."
"...How do I explain this without s-sounding insane....u-uh..." His eyes darted around the room. "...All I know is that we came from, well, where we usually live. It doesn't...have all these colors.."
Henry tilted his head. "You mean like..a cartoon world?"
Barley gave a shaky sigh. "I g-guess you could say that. I don't know...how we even came here.....all I know is that these big, goopy hands came and.." He indicated a grabbing motion. "One b-by one, over t-time. First Charley, then a few weeks later, me..."
"Okay, so now I know that some weird magic shit happened, and you guys got taken into our world. Okay. But....HOW? Did Joey do some, like.....ritual?"
The sailor flinched at the word 'Joey', and was silent for a while.
"Barley? Barley, answer me. Shit, did I break you? I'm sorry, I-"
".....H-Have you ever s-seen a dead b-body?"
Henry's eyes widened. "....Ever since I got here, I've seen, like, two...don't...don't tell me..."
"...Daniel Lewek. That was his name, but he told me t-to call him...Buddy. H-He used to...talk to me...but....he's gone now. I...I don't..."
"Joey used..real people..to make you guys. Okay. Cool. What else is new." Henry sighed, rubbing his forehead.
Barley was shaking in his seat at this point. "...I..I s-saw a bit of it....o-once. S-Some lady...she...died to make....E-Edgar...J-Joey put her in th-the Machine...."
"He....what? Wait.....Edgar? He's alive too? Where is he?"
Barley buried his face in his gloved hands, despondent.
Henry got up from his seat. "Barley? I asked too much, didn't I? I..."
"....I-I just w-want them b-back......"
"What..?"
He curled up in that seat. "..Th-They're...d-different now...th-they won't t-talk to m-me....."
Henry huffed and bent down to his level. "Hey, bud, listen. How about we do each other a favor? You help me get out of here, and I'll help you get your friends back." He held out a hand for him to shake. "Okay? Promise."
The cartoon peeked through his hands, and limply shook Henry's, still covering his face with one hand. "...Okay.."
"Alright, little buddy. It's a deal. Hey, you wanna...play some cards or something? Pass the time?"

Eggcellent, cont. @irritablereddemo
"...yes."
There was no use in denying it. As much as Charley hated the cassowaries, he felt bad accidentally killing a baby still tucked in it's egg. And they were rather cute when they were babies, running around their parent's legs. Those dangerous, strong legs ending in vicious claws. The thought of it made the scars raked down his back ache.
"How do you tell something's in it with the light?"
Charley limped over to the lamp, holding the egg up to it's shine with some doubt. He'd almost rather just not eat eggs at all, but he supposed they were good for you. James insisted he didn't eat enough, but James ate like a horse. Or maybe an elephant. A carnivorous elephant.

look i don't - i'm not - it's not about his huge dick. it's about how ewan just doesn't TALK about how magnificent that thing is. and everyone's well acquainted with it!!!! and it's just there!!! and then he goes "yes i was in fact naked in a bunch of movies" like YES WE KNOW BUT THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM IS LIKE LIKE i can't even describe what i'm feeling rn. sorry i just had to rant about his gigantic, pretty, lovely cock 😞
Definitely a large part of his attraction is his humble cavalier attitude. But like he is proud of his dick! He’s just very casual about it lmao Like seeing his gorgeous dick in so much stuff wouldn’t be anywhere near as gratifying if he were always like, yeah I’m naked in a ridiculous amount of arthouse film and I have the most amount of male frontal nude scenes of any A list actor. 😏 But instead in interviews he’s like yeah I like my dick but anyway may I tell you about how much I love motorcycles! Or perhaps I can talk about Star Wars???Oh you want to joke? Yeah I probably shit my pants in the 90s and 101 other embarrassing stories. I’ve actually been reading his and Charley Boormam’s book, Long Way Round, on their global motorcycle trip and he’s just so genuinely down to earth and fucking lovable. It makes me mad man,Like how dare you have such a wonderful personality to go with your looks and charm and talent. Anakin voice- it isn’t fair!

the problem with Charley and YKW is that it’s not just the normal “the Doctor travelling with a companion” scenario. it’s not even “the Doctor travelling with a companion with an overarching plot”. there’s a massive massive thing going on beneath it all and.....the writers don’t really seem to care. It’s like, a non-issue. They aren’t heading in that direction but they haven’t chosen another direction either. The individual stories have their own little plots but there’s no overall direction. they’re just meandering, and even with that massive elephant in the room it’s boring because there’s nothing to grab you and make you want to keep listening, besides the elephant in the room that’s being very vehemently ignored until it’s already trampling people

Fluff: Snowflakes (G, 572 words.  Doctor Who, Eighth Doctor/Charley Pollard.  No spoilers, it actually is pure fluff.)  Of things I’ve tagged ‘Fluff; I think this is hands down the actual fluffiest.  It’s Eight, Charley, nothing bad happening (yet), and pretty alien snow.
Angst: Autumn Mourning (The Falling Leaves and Elephants Remix) (Teen, 4329 words.  B7/Doctor Who, Orac & the TARDIS, post Gauda Prime.  Spoilers for B7.)  So, apparently I’m really bad at tagging my angst.  (Looking at what does get tagged, the rule is: it’s not usually an angsty fandom OR it’s Spooks so I automatically tag it angst because Spooks.  The same doesn’t apply to my other obviously angsty fandoms though.)  Anyway, this was from Remix two years ago and is still one of my favourite pieces.  It’s a sort of AI angst and revenge fic, a remix of Lycoris’s wonderful original version.
Multichaptered: When the Lights Go Out (Teen, 18272 words.  Sapphire & Steel, Sapphire, Steel, Copper, Original Characters.)  I haven’t written much longfic since being ill, for obvious reasons, but I’m really pleased with this missing assignment fic, set in the 1920s.  S&S being the weird outsider POV thing it is, if you like strange SF-ish ghost stories, it’s pretty accessible anyway. (This was a very belated Fandom Stocking fic for Annariel and kaffyr who had overlapping requests one time).
AU (Canon Divergence): it’s the rain that will strengthen your soul (Star Wars Prequel Trilogy, Teen, 10926 words.  Padme Amidala/Obi-Wan Kenobi, C-3PO, R2D2, Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa.  Padme Lives! AU.)  Written for Space Swap 2020, for anr, who asked for Obi-Wan and Padme going on the run with the twins in a rackety old freighter, post-Revenge of the Sith.  After a lot of Wookieepedia-ing, it was a pleasure to write and I’m quite proud of it.
AU (Other Setting): We’ll Burn That Barn When We Come To It (11th Century RPF, Teen, 3511 words.  William the Conquerer/Harold Godwinson, Edith of Wessex, Mathilda of Flanders.)  And sometimes someone leaves a Yuletide request that results in the Battle of Hastings being rewritten as organic farming warfare in epistolary format, with bonus bees.  I had such fun, and I can safely rec it because going by the comments, so did plenty of other people.  (Also it has a happy ending, unlike actual history.)
(I posted two because Canon Divergence/Other Setting AUs are both such different beasts and I write both when I feel like it and, unlike other categories, I remember to tag for it!)
Tagging... @pers-books @captain-aralias @scarletmanuka @bunn1cula @eveeleven11-blog and any other writerly sorts who would like to do it, because I always forget important people when tagging! <3

Disney Movies List
Ok first of all I want to make clear that english is not my first language. I therefore apologize in advance for any grammar or spelling mistakes. Please don't be too strict with me =D
I recently bought Disney+ and I plan now to watch and review every movie, Disney has ever produced or participated in it. And I tell you, this will be a hell of a trip, because my list now contains no fewer than 701 movies. That means if I watch at least one movie every day, it will take me about 2 years to see all of them. And since I will most likely not watch a movie every day, I will definitely need at least twice as long....
For the films on my list, which I marked with a cross at the end, it means that I have seen them already. However, since I last saw most of these movies in my childhood or teenage years (so at least 15 years ago), it will be interesting for me to rewatch them after such a long time. I have probably already forgotten most of the plots.
I also plan to watch them in chronological order and rank them. The movies that I don't find on Disney+ I will watch somewhere else.
Here is the list: (The films follow the chronological order in which they were published. However, it is quite possible that I accidentally swapped a few. But I think most of it is accurate).
