“They get more aggressive when their nests are being pilfered.” Charley frowns, pulling his legs up to sit criss-cross, chin resting in the palm of one hand. Spring was always so stressful with the nesting birds and volitile weather. James wasn’t helping now with his peculiar egg obsession - ever since the las of the pups went on to start their own packs, he’d gone from one odd collection to another.

“I’m afraid he’s got some idea in his head about raising a bunch of cassowary chicks as his own.”

There was no use in denying it. As much as Charley hated the cassowaries, he felt bad accidentally killing a baby still tucked in it's egg. And they were rather cute when they were babies, running around their parent's legs. Those dangerous, strong legs ending in vicious claws. The thought of it made the scars raked down his back ache.

"How do you tell something's in it with the light?"

Charley limped over to the lamp, holding the egg up to it's shine with some doubt. He'd almost rather just not eat eggs at all, but he supposed they were good for you. James insisted he didn't eat enough, but James ate like a horse. Or maybe an elephant. A carnivorous elephant.

“It’s too beautiful of a day to be sitting inside.” 

Charley smiled, offering his arm to the smaller man as he leaned on his cane. James was still sleeping, the werewolf had been out nearly all night, as he preferred when the moon was full, looming over the island like a blind eye. It would be nice to spend some time with Rasturn out in their little patch of vegetables, maybe pick a few things for dinner while they were out there.  

“What are you mending, darling?”

“Yes he is. He didn’t believe that bats were real until I took him down into the caves to show him.”

Charley hummed, calm and relaxed against Rasturn. He pressed a gentle kiss to his neck, nuzzling close. His worry about the egg was irrational, he knew, but after a few eggs with chicks it was a hard thing to shake. Even Rasturn’s infertile ones worried him now, he had to fight the urge to steal them away and keep them safe just to be sure. 

“I know, it’s silly.” Charley murmured, “hard to shake the idea, though.”

"We have other eggs?"

Charley pauses, looking down at the - not inconsiderably sized - eggs he's holding. He assumed they were cassowary eggs. James was always bringing home weird stuff like that. He just hoped they weren't close to hatching like the last batch of 'mystery eggs' the wolf brought into the house.

"I don't know which ones these are. I thought James maybe brought them home again."

“I don’t have much of a preference.” Charley replied, stretching his bum leg as he kneaded at the muscles, particularly down by his ankle which had started to give him problems as of late. Weird cramping feelings. Charley suspected he just stepped wrong and twisted it a bit. He didn’t feel much like wrapping it at the moment, though. 

“I just thought it might be nice to go out a little. Do you want to get some shellfish for dinner? We could swim for them, if you’re in the mood for it.”

“Can you tell?”

Charley moved closer, settling gently, carefully into Rasturn’s lap and curling up there with the egg. His limp wasn’t so bad as of late, he had been traveling less and staying close to the Cenote. Mostly he went out to garden or find materials washed up on the beach, not nearly the long and torturous miles he had been putting on before. It was nice. Better.

“If it has a baby inside, shouldn’t we just put it back in the nest?”

Charley didn’t think cassowaries were intelligent enough to figure out if an egg was theirs or not. James could surely handle the logistical issues of dealing with an angry bird while putting the egg back.

"I can cook it, you look comfortable, darling."

Charley raised the egg, giving it a little shake. He wasn't sure what he was listening for, but surely there'd be some sign if there was an entire baby bird in there and not just yolk and whites.

"So it's not one of yours? I can never tell them apart. Except for chicken eggs, but those are awful obvious. I just hope he hasn't pissed off a nearby cassowary and picked one a little farther away this time."
