How to Read a Book, originally published in 1940, has become a rare phenomenon, a living classic. It is the best and most successful guide to reading comprehension for the general reader. And now it has been completely rewritten and updated.
You are told about the various levels of reading and how to achieve them – from elementary reading, through systematic skimming and inspectional reading, to speed reading, you learn how to pigeonhole a book, X-ray it, extract the author's message, criticize. You are taught the different reading techniques for reading practical books, imaginative literature, plays, poetry, history, science and mathematics, philosophy and social science.
Finally, the authors offer a recommended reading list and supply reading tests whereby you can measure your own progress in reading skills, comprehension and speed.
Daily inspiration. Discover more photos at http://justforbooks.tumblr.com

"The first to remember is that the essence of tragedy is time, or rather the lack of it. There is no problem in any Greek tragedy that could not have been solved if there had been enough time, but there is never enough. Decisions, choices have to be made in a moment, there is no time to think and weigh the consequences; and, since even tragic heroes are fallible—especially fallible, perhaps— the decisions are wrong. It is easy for us to see what should have been done, but would we have been able to see in time?"
- How to Read a Book, Charles Van Doren and Mortimer J. Adler (1972)

Today I learned that the two most famous figures in the 1950s television quiz show scandals passed away recently: Charles Van Doren in 2019 and his rival Herb Stempel in 2020. The producers fed both contestants answers ahead of time and arranged for Stempel to lose so Van Doren could become the new champion.
The excellent 1994 movie Quiz Show stars Ralph Fiennes as Charles Van Doren, John Turturro as Herb Stempel, and Rob Morrow as Congressional lawyer Richard Goodwin.

even if William H. Macy's Magnolia character wasn't a disgraced gay ex-child-prodigy the line "I really do have love to give I just don't know where to put it" would be extremely Ruprecht-coded

remember how vox makes that gameshow sound talking to valentino and he's like great idea! WELL i'm reading about gameshows in the 1950s (as one does) and apparently it was one of the biggest tv scandals of the time:
The quiz show, which awarded large cash prizes to contestants who answered questions posed to them by a host, had become a dominant program type on prime-time TV by 1955. In the fall of 1956 the networks aired 16 evening quiz shows, 6 of which were among the 30 highest-rated shows of the season. By 1958, however, widespread allegations were circulating that many of these shows, in order to maintain dramatic tension, had been fixed—that contestants were told the answers before appearing on the air. Charles Van Doren, an instructor at Columbia University and the scion of a family of notable writers and academics, was the most beloved and well-known of the big money winners. He remained in the public eye after his multiple appearances on the quiz show Twenty-One (NBC, 1956–58) by, among other things, parlaying his newfound celebrity into a guest host job on the popular NBC morning show Today (begun 1952). Van Doren consistently denied any involvement in the scandal until Nov. 2, 1959, when, after being subpoenaed by a congressional committee investigating the matter, he confessed that he too had been given answers to questions before each appearance on Twenty-One.
