Idea that just popped into my head: a Love Actually pastiche with the members of the original Justice League (and maybe some of their supporting cast and/or villians). Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Barry Allen, Hal Jordan, Martian Manhunter, Aquaman, Green Arrow, Ray Palmer, Hawkman and Hawkgirl, Black Canary, Red Tornado, Elongated Man, Zatanna and Firestorm. Plus The Phantom Stranger and Metamorpho! We have enough characters to deliver an ensemble cast, and a story of love and how it's expressed amongst all the members.
If we need more characters though... then let's add the JSA. Jay Garrick, Alan Scott, Rex Tyler, Wesley Dodds, Jim Corrigan, Ted Knight, Charles Mcnider, Al Pratt, Ted Grant, Terry Sloane, Johnny Thunder, and all the others. They have stories to tell at Christmastime. And if they don't, surely Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, Perry White, Lex Luthor, Edward Nygma, Harvey Dent, Victor Fries, Dick Grayson, Carol Ferris, John Stewart, Len Snart, etc would have stories to tell. Everyone has love in their lives. Or did, once. We need a massive book just full of short stories about what love means to superheroes and supervillians. I would gladly read this comic. Gladly.
If DC won't do it, then let Marvel do it. Use The Avengers and The Defenders. Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hank Pym, Janet van Dyne, Rick Jones, Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, The Vision, Black Panther, Hercules, Doctor Strange, The Hulk, Namor, The Silver Surfer, Valkyrie, Nighthawk, Daredevil, Luke Cage and Daimon Hellstrom. There's just so, so many characters who we could see at the holidays. Winter is a wonderful time, a time for sentiment. And I want to see that sentiment.

Hamilton | 2NT | 2024, June | MP4 (11.82 GB, 2160p) | The Riddle’s master Cast: Nick Sanchez (u/s Alexander Hamilton), Kendyl Sayuri Yokoyama (Eliza Hamilton), Deon'te Goodman (Aaron Burr), Lencia Kebede (Angelica Schuyler), Carvens Lissaint (George Washington), Jared Howelton (Marquis de Lafayette/Thomas Jefferson), Eddie Ortega (Hercules Mulligan/James Madison), Tyler Fauntleroy (John Laurens/Philip Hamilton), Erin Ramirez (u/s Peggy Schuyler/Maria Reynolds), Paul Louis Lessard (King George III), Devin Tyler Hatch (s/w James Reynolds/Philip Schuyler/Doctor), Stephen Carrasco (Samuel Seabury), Zach Bravo (s/w Charles Lee), Dharon Jones (George Eacker), Bella Rusli (s/w The Bullet), Taeko McCarroll (s/w Ensemble), Josh Marin (Ensemble), Cyndal Gilmore (Ensemble), Vanessa Magula (s/w Ensemble) Victoria Fiore (Ensemble), Malachi Durant (Ensemble)
Notes: Decent 4k capture of the touring production. Some very rough filming at times, with some blind-wideshots and a few blackouts due to usher activity, but also has some really gorgeous close-ups. Struggles with washout at times, some minor obstruction from heads particularly on either extreme side of the stage, and has some major obstruction from a head during Act 2. Filming is much more settled during Act 2. Has some nice covers on. Jared’s, Bella’s, and Devin’s final show with the company.

David Wertman - Kara Suite - Finders Keepers reissue of 1976 LP from Steve Reid's Mustevic Sound label
As one of the three inaugural 1976 releases to ignite the mythical Mustevic Music catalogue, David Wertman’s elusive Kara Suite LP was the first record to turn jazz drummer Steve Reid’s vanity imprint into a bona fide cooperative record label with a multi-artist repertoire. Entrusting his own bass player with the limelight, Reid’s unlikely A&R decision would typify his oblique strategies and challenge the common perception of a soloist within jazz’s shifting landscape. Drawing few comparisons amongst independent label releases of the time, save for rare standalone LP by Ronnie Boykins (ESP 1975) and cellist Abdul Wadoud (Bisharra 1978), Wertman’s only solo album (preceding his work with Sun Ensemble and The New Life Trio) combined frenetic bow work, intricate spiritual exchanges and raucous rock solid cyclic riffage to underpin his own compositional complexities. Providing a platform for first-time players like Richard Schatzberg (French horn) and future avant jazz punk participant Ken Simon (tenor/soprano sax) Kara Suite provides an early indication of Wertman’s multilayered and non-conformist blueprint from which the hallowed New Life Trio would eventually illuminate. The album’s off-kilter commitment is further cemented by the inclusion of worldly free jazz luminary Charles Tyler (alto sax) and the naturalistic back-beat of Steve Reid himself to complete the dream team – albeit a sleepless one, on account of this one-off quintet’s wide-eyed innovation. Presented in four parts, Kara Suite documents Wertman’s very first musical directorial commitment to vinyl, preceded only by guest appearances, months earlier, on Steve Reid’s classic Rhythmatism and the ultra-rare The Universal Jazz Symphonette LP which chronicles Wertman’s deep-end New York baptism alongside Billy Bang and Earl Freeman before his relocation to Northampton forged this unique and oblique chapter in America’s independent jazz narrative. As one of the final pages to be turned in the Mustevic reappraisal legacy this album perhaps remains the best kept secret for aficionados who actively choose to blur the lines between spiritual jazz and free jazz with no discrimination against art rock and the genre that might soon be christened punk (but not as we know it). Finally resurrected via the Finders Keepers/Early Future unison, complete with full cooperation and sleeve note narration by David’s partner Lynne Meryl, it might come as little surprise that amongst these pillars of alternative, privately pressed jazz is a story that also intertwines names such as Alice Cooper, Archie Shepp, KISS and DJ Shadow and many mutating musical genres that have made this music so hard to pin down over the subsequent five decades.

State of the Archive
A decent week! We're steadily gaining new users and have a pretty good participation in both the weekly challenges and the Review Hunt! I'm so happy you're all here. Anyway, we're still occasionally running into indexing errors, etc, so if you go to use the site and it throws you an error, it's not an instability issue, just a minor bug we're still chasing. Everything's safe in the database.
Weekly Challenge #14: Wind and Water Ever have someone show up on your doorstep when you had no idea they were coming? Or how about that time you were crusing that nebula and suddenly a warship decloaked. Or what happened that time someone actually stood up at a wedding and interrupted?
Anyway, your challenge is to write between 100 and 700 words about unexpected appearances, as prompted by DaraOakwise. And when you post it to the archive, tag it Weekly Challenge: Unexpected Appearances
This challenge ends on 8/18 at 11:59PM Eastern.

Starkid Shucked

It’s time for Starkid to get totally Shucked! The bizarre experience of Broadway’s new corn-based musical almost feels like a Starkid musical to me so I was all too ready to create this dreamcast once the cast recording dropped. So I hope you all enjoy this crop just in time for the Tony’s (in which Shucked will likely win one or two of them.)
(Also I realized I’d been writing Davis Hamilton’s name incorrectly, oops)
1. Lauren Lopez as Maizey 2. Britney Coleman as Lulu 3. Curt Mega as Gordy 4. Brian Rosenthal as Peanut 5. Davis Hamilton as Beau 6. Bryce Charles as Storyteller 1 7. Will Branner as Storyteller 2 8. Rachael Soglin as Ensemble 15. Tiffany Williams as Ensemble
Swings: Angela Giarratana, Brian Holden, James Tolbert, Virginia Vass

Make sure to leave any show suggestions or any questions on my casting choices so I can explain them.

'…Weekly Commentary: Barbenheimer has burst into the Oscar race with Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” and Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” finally landing in theaters with critical acclaim and a possible colossal box office haul.
Of all the movies screened up to this point this year, Nolan’s movie is one of two films that could have all the key ingredients to win the Academy Awards’ most coveted prize. It’ll be a colossal guild player (watch out for the SAG ensemble), and the regional critics could make it a darling during the precursor season. The ongoing strikes could have a ripple effect on films that are dropping in the later months since their teams won’t be able to promote them in the same way as earlier titles…
The submission deadline for general categories is Nov. 18, 2023. Preliminary shortlist voting will begin on Dec. 18, with the results announced on Dec. 21. The voting period will run from Jan. 11-16, 2024, with the official nominations announcement on Jan. 23.

Marcus Coloma’s Final General Hospital Airdate as Nikolas Revealed
In December, we reported that Marcus Coloma would be exiting his General Hospital role as Nikolas for good and now, as confirmed in the latest issue of Soap Opera Digest, the actor will last be seen in the role this week. Fans can also expect to see another actor stepping in to finish up the character’s Port Charles scenes next week. Whether or not Adam Huss will return, remains to be seen.
**Please let it be Tyler Christopher!!
On Thursday, January 26, his last scene, we watched as Nikolas told Ava that things weren’t what they seemed, and that once the truth came out she would see things differently.

Coloma first broke his silence before the holidays near the end of 2022 to say what an amazing ride he had having played the role of Nik since 2019. He then thanked fans for all of their messages of support and shared, “You are the best.”
Not long after, the ABC soap released a comment as to why Coloma would no longer be in the role and explained that the network and the actor agreed that he “should not film the remaining few days of the year,” as a result of “health issues with his recent Covid exposure.”
A spokesperson for the actor then released a message from Coloma, who praised the “family feel of the ensemble cast” and said how much he “fell in love with the extremely passionate fanbase,” one he’ll always be grateful for.
Again, we wish Coloma much success in his future endeavors, and we’ll be sure to reported details as to who will step in to play out the last of Nik’s scenes as they are released.

Notes:
Good capture of Halloween! This was filmed on the aisle so you can see some people getting up and walking around at times. LOTS of latecomers during ready set I had to get up to let people into the row, so there is no video there. The guy in front of me wouldn't stop moving so his head can come in and out of frame at times but it's always worked around.

Nice Capture of the new non-equity tour! There can be a head in the way at some points but it's worked around well. The video can be somewhat grainy at times due to how far I was + how dark the show was. Overall a great video of this incredible cast.

My Favorite Films and Performances of 2020
“I wish I could’ve seen it on the big screen.”
It was a strange year, and even stranger year of movie watching. In 2020 I saw only one of my top films in a theater, which is crazy (like much else over these past months). But the experience of keeping up with the movies this year was a reminder that great filmmaking can transcend the specifics of the viewing experience. In your living room, in bed, projected onto the side of a garage, streaming on Twitch, broken up into multiple sittings, maybe even on your phone (desperate times)… if doesn’t matter as long as it connects with you. A great film has the power to soothe and transport, to alter your perspective, to re-wire your brain. So while I didn’t get on a single airplane last year, I definitely went places. And I’m grateful for these changes of scenery. For the time-travel as well; last year in my house, we found great comfort in revisiting a bunch of old favorites. It was also an opportunity to finally watch a number of those older films that had someone evaded us… a year of catching up, now or never. We were members of a weekly movie club for some months — that was cool. Another pleasant silver lining was the emergence of virtual film festivals, which have been a fantastic opportunity. I hope that they can continue in some form when this pandemic is in the rearview. Because, you know, getting to Park City is a real schlep. All this to say: like you, I’ll always remember 2020. In this truly crummy year, the movies really helped.
I’m including some of the film festival stuff that’s coming out a little later, because the boundaries between 2020 films and 2021 films feels blurry to me without proper theatrical releases.

There is a spotlight on Foxconn which made a big splash for Trump at the start of his presidency. The company has done a lot of nothing but still gets tax cuts. Homes were demolished, roads were widened to nowhere and money was spent. Wisconsinites are upset that this big business is just folly and a big glass orb.
*****
Mike Lindell is a kook but he did try to appear to be a good sport on Kimmel.
*****
When will weed be legal on a federal level? When will drug testing for employment be illegal? We hear so much about personal rights with the gun laws and vaccines and masks. What about the right to do what we want with our bodies when we are not at work. Think of the administrative costs that could be saved if we just removed drug testing. Our experience and work ethic should mean more that what we do with our free time. This is not a problem at all companies. There are places in this country where it is near impossible anywhere in your area to get hired without a drug screening. One joint on a random Saturday night could keep someone from a great opportunity. A person in pain who reaches for an edible might miss out on the job that saves their lives.
*****
NASA sent the first flight to another planet. The Mars flight made history with the 30 sec feat.
*****
What? The Menendez brothers are popular again? From the Ramsey case to the Manson murders or Bundy, it all comes back around again.

*****
What is going on with Bank of America? I am hearing from multiple people that often they do not get their statement in the mail. Is this a bad Postal service? Is this bad business practice? How many late fees had to be paid because of this? Not everybody wants to pay their bills online.
*****
Jack Hanna has revealed that he has dementia.
*****
Tiny Tim : King for a day is a new doc I must see. The film contains footage shot from Warhol’s Factory. There are excerpts from Tim’s diary read by Weird Al Yankovic and the story of how Tiny’s friend, Bob Dylan wanted to make a film with him.

*****
The Oscars were held on April 25. It was a bit of a yawner and why would a show set themselves up for an awkward end?? There was a commercial from P&G right before the broadcast that stated, “ Widen the screen so we can widen our view.” Nice sentiment. Mank had so many noms and only 2 wins. People looking their best to me were Leslie Odom Jr., Glenn Close, Riz Ahmed, LaKeith Stanfield, Colman Domingo, John Batiste, Mia Neal, Questlove (gold crocs and a mask!), Desmond Roe, Travon Free, Trish Summerville, Marlee Matlin, The Lucas Brothers, Andra Day, Carey Mulligan, Amanda Seyfried, Nicolette Robinson, Regina King and Margot Robbie. Laura Dern looked like Big Bird, there were just too many feathers. Tiara Thomas had feathers but they looked great. Angela Bassett had some power sleeves and Tyer Perry looked like a little boy. Hooray for Emerald Fennell for her win for original screenplay but not sure about the dress. And Viola Davis?? Dana Murray?? Ashley Fox?? Hmm?? Winners seemed to have trouble getting to the stage. They often refused the steps or the walkway and sort of climbed up the side. I did love the intimate setting and it did remind me of the old clips of years before. Sound of metal and Ma Rainey both won. Tyler Perry and for the first time, an organization, the motion picture and television fund, took home the humanitarian award. I was thrilled to see My Octopus Teacher win for Doc. I loved Crip Camp too, that was a hard category. The acting winners went in all directions. Many critics complained that the films were real downers . Nomadland won best picture. Michael Moore put it best I think. Of the films this year, he said, “They force you to look backward with 2021 eyes.”
*****
Why the Fuck do we need a militarized police force?
*****
R.I.P. victims of the multiple mass shootings, victims of police shootings, the crush in Israel, Cosette Brown, Midwin Charles, DMX, Paul Ritter, Ethel Gabriel, G. Gordon Liddy, Buddy Peppenschmidt, Prince Philip, Anne Beatts, Diane Adler, Vartan Gregorian, Monte Hellman, Jim Steinman, Michael Collins, Michael wolf Snyder, Johnny Crawford, Eli Broad and Walter Mondale.

Albert Ayler – 1965 · Spirits Rejoice & Bells Revisited (Ezz-thetics)

Economy-sized ensembles are sort of the default setting in Albert Ayler’s tragically fixed discography. Trios abound, from his earliest recordings in the company of a pair of ill-equipped and recalcitrant Swedes to the seminal expletive-in-a-cathedral unit involving Gary Peacock and Sunny Murray. Quartets are also plentiful, with first Don Cherry and then sibling Donald following in fielding brass. Spirits Rejoice & Bells Revisited renews attention on a pair of pivotal larger group episodes, one concert, the other captured in a concert hall sans audience, where Ayler expanded measurably on the polyphonic possibilities of his music.
Sequencing situates the second performance first, a sextet with the brothers Ayler joined by altoist Charles Tyler, bassist Henry Grimes and old colleagues Peacock and Murray. Five originals cover a spectrum of bases starting with the clarion march “Spirits Rejoice” which is redolent with the sanctified Salvation Army atmosphere that was Albert’s trademark. Regal statement of an Aeolian theme is answered by Tyler’s limpid asides before a conflagration of collective free improvisation takes hold. “Holy Family,” by comparison, is almost jukebox-worthy in its shimmy-powered concision and Call Cobbs joins the fun on flurried and florid harpsichord for “Angel.”
“Bells” comes from an engagement at New York’s Town Hall four months earlier with bassist Lewis Worrell in place of Grimes and Peacock. Essayist Brian Olewnick makes astute linkages to Ornette Coleman’s “Free Jazz” in terms of its general linkage free and thematic passages, but Ayler’s extended design sounds more elemental and unhinged from the jump. Donald is a molten metallic fount abetted by his older brother’s exhortations and those of Tyler who was apparently making his recorded debut on the date. A series of exchanges ensues, broken by audience applause and shifts to subgroupings including a duet passage by leader and Peacock that’s never sounded clearer.
That new clarity dials focus directly to audio engineer Peter Pfister and it’s why this particular reissue really matters. Pfister has become a continuous and crucial footnote to these reissues on the Ezz-thetics imprint. As with earlier projects, he defogs and brightens the source material substantially, bringing particularly potent boosts to the bassists and Murray’s vocalizations. The effect is as conspicuous and revelatory as to render earlier ESP editions of the music instantly obsolete. Ayler’s tenor sound, a helical weave of textured striations and colors, is absolutely deserving of the royal aural treatment so copiously applied.
~ Derek Taylor
