I love it when pre Original Trilogy era shows how much effort went into making the Death Star. It took decades, literal decades, and it took so much money and so many people and it was such a secretive thing and it’s staffed by millions because it’s the size of a small moon.
I cannot express how much all of the added information makes it so much funnier that Luke blew it up.
Luke destroys literally everything Palpatine built. He blows up the Death Star, which was referenced in universe as early as the second movie. He blew up the weapon of mass destruction twenty years in the making. And he blew it up pretty much directly after it’s first and only successful attack. It was operational for fifteen minutes, fifteen minutes that Palpatine had the thing he’d been building for longer than Luke has been alive, and Luke blows it up. First day retirement, but first hour retirement.
Luke convinces Darth Vader to turn back to the light side, a feat thought literally impossible by literally everybody. Sidious clearly doesn’t see Vader’s betrayal coming. Vader’s betrayal was not in his plans, nor was it something he was prepared for. Sidious is a powerful Force user with all four limbs while Vader is a man in the tin can Palpatine put him in. If Palpatine had seen Vader turning coming, he would not have allowed it to happen.
Luke literally should not even be alive. Palpatine almost definitely got Padme out of the way on purpose, and he almost certainly was trying for her unborn child as well (there was way too big of a risk that a cute liddol bebe would bring some humanity back to Anakin, and Palpatine did not want Anakin to have any humanity) Luke living is literally the first step in Palpatine’s ultimate downfall, especially once Vader finds out that Luke is his son. His very alive son. His son that is not dead, despite Palpatine claiming Anakin killed Padme. Implying that Anakin killed Padme and she posthumously gave birth. But, she didn’t give birth on Mustafar, which was the last place Anakin interacted with her. And once the mother dies, you have to get those fuckers out fast or they die too.
I imagine Darth Vader piecing all of this together is that meme with all the math floating around his head, because how could Padme have died by his hand and then given birth like two hours later?
Luke killing Palpatine is what ultimately leads to the dissolution of the Empire as an omnipotent entity. Luke killed the Empire. Luke spends a good amount of his adult life killing Empire remnants. We see that in the Mandalorian, since he’s so recognizable that Gideon immediately knows he’s fucked just by seeing an X-wing. We read it in Legends’ continuity, where Luke terrifies Imperials because he can walk into their changing room and stand in their for a minute and they don’t even notice.
Luke destroyed Palpatine’s life’s work. Everything Palpatine spent his whole life working towards, and Luke kills all of it. He blows up not one, but two Death Stars (he may not have pulled the trigger on the second Death Star, but without him, it never would have been destroyed). He convinces not one, but multiple Sith and Dark Jedi to return from the Dark Side. He is the only reason that Obi-Wan Kenobi, the biggest pain in Palpatine’s ass ever born, lives long enough to make it to the Death Star.
Palpatine went through so much effort. And just when he had finally won, when he finally had a weapon capable of destroying entire planets with a single blast, making it impossible for any planets or peoples to go against him, Luke shows up nineteen years late to the Jedi party with space Starbucks and a droid twice his age and almost singlehandedly destroys everything Palpatine ever had a hand in creating.
Luke manages to become even worse than Obi-Wan Kenobi, the ultimate thorn in the side of politicians, and Luke doesn’t even understand any politics. He wasn’t trained in diplomacy like Obi-Wan and Leia, no, he’s a farmboy who left home for the first time in his entire life, just this morning. And he is the one to destroy the Empire.
If they rewrote Star Wars and had it entirely from Palpatine’s perspective, Luke Skywalker would be his greatest foe. Luke Skywalker would be the final boss. Luke Skywalker is the antithesis of everything Palpatine believes in and he is the one character that Palpatine cannot predict. He isn’t as moldable as Anakin, he doesn’t respond to threats very well, he’s apparently impossible to kill via Force lightning (still the funniest scene of all times, the progression of Palpatine’s face falling and him looking like “what the fuck??? Is this kid rubber??? I’ve electrocuted him eight times???”), his unwavering faith in his father’s goodness makes Darth Vader want to be a better person, Luke Skywalker is the big bad of Palpatine’s story and—
There is nothing in this world that is funnier than someone’s biggest antagonist being Luke fucking Skywalker. Luke Skywalker, who saved the galaxy with the power of love and who shouldn’t exist, by Jedi rules and by Palpatine’s own attempts, and whose best friends are literally droids, which Palpatine canonically hates!
Everything about this is hilarious, this is the funniest thing in all of media, Palpatine loses absolutely everything to some backwater farmboy who fucking likes droids.

Anidala rant
Alright I really don't understand people saying that Anakin didn't actually love Padmé, he was just obsessive and then used her as an excuse to get more power.
First off, love in general is just a tad bit obsessive okay? I'm a bit obsessed with my husband, I love him, he's amazing. You have to be a little obsessive to have the courage to bear your heart and soul to someone who you are absolutely NOT supposed to be with. Also, can we talk about the fact that after Padmé "rejected" him he totally backed down? I mean he still loved her, but he wasn't going to push it anymore until she admitted that she loved him too.
Also…ANAKIN LITERALLY SACRIFICES HIS SOUL because he can't bear the thought of living without her. If it isn't clear enough in the movies (it is crystal clear) then the Revenge of the Sith novelization makes it even more so. He is genuinely horrified when he discovers that his friend, the Chancellor has been a Sith Lord this whole time, and multiple times he wishes Obi-wan was there with him because Anakin is so confused and has no idea what to do. And the ONLY reason he goes back to "save" Palpatine is because he can't let Palpatine die without learning how to save Padmé.
EVEN WHEN MACE IS FIGHTING PALPATINE Anakin wants Palpatine to BE ARRESTED. The only time Anakin moves against Mace Windu is when Mace is about to kill Palpatine, who has convinced Anakin that he is the only one who has the knowledge to save Padmé.
His turning to the Dark Side has nothing to do with power, and solely to do with wanting to save his wife from certain death. Dude was literally about to leave the Jedi Order, and he honestly didn't care anymore about being granted the rank of Master. The only reason he NEEDED the rank so badly is because he wanted to look up stuff in the Jedi archives ways he could possibly save Padmé, but only Jedi Masters were able to access some of these files. Add in the fact that his nightmares had made it impossible for him to sleep for literal days (weeks?) before the battle in the Chancellor's office.
Even when he's choking her on Mustafar, it's not because he never loved her, it's because he is in so much pain. All he sees is that the woman he loves most in the world, the woman he has sacrificed everything for and destroyed his soul for, WANTS HIM DEAD. Which of course isn't true, but why else would she have brought Obi-wan with her? He chokes her because every one of her words is a dagger, he feels betrayed and he can't listen to it anymore or he'll shatter. –This is not an excuse for any kind of abuse, but you have to understand the emotional turmoil he is going through. This is also not an argument that what he did was RIGHT in any way after turning to the Dark Side, but you do have to see how his actions (to him, at least) make perfect sense and that NONE of his actions hint at the fact that he either didn't love her or stopped loving her. He loved her even as Vader, he loved her forever.
Anyway, sorry, I've been reading the ROTS novelization and I'm almost done with it and I'm sad and emotional.

The Mask of Darth Vader
I'm sure other people realize this and have thought of this before, but as I've been writing my Star Wars fanfic I've come to understand something that feels a bit profound. At least to me.
Darth Vader IS the mask.
He is the mask that Anakin Skywalker wears to DEAL WITH WHAT HE'S DONE.
Because the truth is, Anakin Skywalker is not actually capable of committing the absolute horrors attributed to Vader. If you think about it, Anakin CARES and FEELS MORE DEEPLY than anyone. And while his love for Padmé drives him to embrace the Dark Side, he does not do it lightly. He falls to his knees, saying, "What have I done?" after (quite literally) disarming Mace Windu, which very quickly leads to the Jedi Master's death.
He only accepts the Dark Side and becomes Sidious's apprentice because he truly believes this is the only way to save the woman he loves. But what Sidious asks him to do to become powerful enough in the Dark Side is so awful and goes against everything Anakin ever stood for or believed in. So he creates this second persona, VADER, who has the strength to do what Anakin could not.
And I think this is why Vader hates Anakin: because Anakin didn't have it in him to do what needed to be done to save his (their?) wife. Because Anakin honestly doesn't have it in him to do what Sidious asks him to do.
This is why it's so shocking to everyone who ever knew Anakin that he turned to the Dark Side. Because once gain, HE JUST DOESN'T HAVE IT IN HIM. He is too caring, too loving, too empathetic to do the things that Vader does. And I think that NEVER STOPS BEING THE CASE.
Of course, Anakin and Vader are the same person, and deep down Anakin realizes that Vader is not actually real. But the Vader Persona protects him from the pain. Vader allows Anakin his innocence, Vader takes all the blame. Vader doesn't wallow in grief, Vader turns his pain into rage and uses it to protect the Empire.
Vader is the coping strategy Anakin uses to survive what he did. To survive his wife's death. And it's only fitting that once Luke brings Anakin forth once more, Anakin becomes one with the Force. Vader was the only thing keeping him alive.
This is why I love writing about Vader. His cognitive dissonance is horrifying and wonderful.

Remember my post about Anakin pulling a Mike Murdock? Yeah, no, I have a full on AU concept now (with contributions by @threebea! indented)!
He lies so hard about having a brother that the universe invents a twin from scratch for him. It happens when Anakin is like twelve.
Anakin was just committing to the bit on a mission because he was bored.
The Force was also bored.
Oh no Anakin force manifests a sibling Obi-Wan: …That's not how the Force works. Anakin: You tell the Force that. Obi-Wan: Well, I suppose this would be your half-brother since the Force is your shared parent. Obi-Wan after the initial shock: This might as well happen.
New brother is better at some things and worse at others, as any person is. Anakin is, naturally, a fucking mess about all that, worries he'll be replaced, etc.
Obi-Wan just brings this to the Council and nobody can DENY this Skywalker from the Jedi after they already took the first one. So. Mace volunteers.
This Skywalker is a bit more Force than Anakin, got glowing eyes and visions and the Animal Communion buff. But is worse at flying, worse at tech, and unfathomably worse at people. Which is a FEAT, since Anakin's not too hot at social skills in the first place.
Mace has his hands full in many ways, including "keep this child from walking face first into the wall."
Obi-Wan: We are not calling him Anagain.
Anakin had many mixed feelings but! If he's going to have family then he's going to commit!
The other option is that the brother is younger by enough that the Older Brother instincts kick in, but I think the one-sided twin rivalry is funnier.
Anakin: I'm a big brother now. Anagain: I think we're supposed to be twins. Anakin: I have more worldly experience. Anagain: I'm taller. Anakin: wut Anagain: alpha twin alpha twin (that's his nickname until you come up with actual name lol) Obi-Wan: Well, I'm taller than both of you, and while that is the case you both need to listen to me. Anagain: (flash of foresight) So, not for long Obi-Wan: What? Anagain: Nothing. Mace: (the Shatterpoints are blinding) Yeah, I'll be taking this one. More seriously tho, Anakin definitely torn between what if everyone likes him better he's born from the force what if he's the chosen one what if and also: I have a brother I have family I need to take care of him. Probably some fun twin force bond too. Oh man Sheev after digesting all of that would definitely try to get some jealousy going.
Anakin talks about the new brother with terms like Freshly Hatched and Innocent Baby and it's mostly a joke except that now HE thinks Palps is a creep when it's aimed at Not Him.
Palpatine: When do I get to meet him? Anakin: [absolutely not] Mace won't let him [Yeah that'll work] Mace: Yeah, absolutely not, he didn't help save Naboo there's no reason for my Padawan to have a relationship with the Supreme Chancellor
I've decided to call the brother Aion (EY-yon). I like the whole thing about Anakin's name being based on Ananke, even if it's a disputed thing, so I go for Greek myth when doing alt names for siblings.
Mace still bitter about having to let Palps get time with Anakin not about to do the same if he can help it. Although that comic takes place later eh (handwaves) still The Jedi might try to be hush hush about where aion came from anyway since he would fall directly under Jedi business
Help I'm imagining Mace and Obi-Wan on a walk and the twins are on child leashes. Anakin because ADHD will have him trying to run off to look at something. And Aion because he's going to be so distracted by visions that he will walk into traffic.
"Can we send a letter to mom so she knows he exists?" The other thought was ANAKIN holding the child leash for Aion, and then Obi-Wan or Mace holding the one for Anakin. Lil chain.
Aion: Hey… I know I've only existed for a few months, and yes my memories of before are sort of built by the Force, but I'm pretty sure the Supreme Chancellor is evil. Mace: You saw that in a vision? Aion: No, he's just super creepy. Bad vibes.
Obi-Wan: Of course he's evil, he's a career politician. Anakin: What about your friend from Alderaan? Obi-Wan: That's different.
One of these boys is constantly zoning out. The other is smiling, but the smile contains murder.
They're both adhd but with wildly different sides of it.
EXACTLY
Also.
Aion: [silent, a bit upset but mostly chill] Anakin, holding his hand: He asked for no pickles!

NOT to cheapen a beautiful and very emotional scene but I love that Vader just tossed Sidious over a safety railing. You’re so right king he DOSEN’T deserve a climactic 10-minute lightsaber-force-lava-showdown-duel like Obi-Wan did
#this was the final duel that had been prophesied for CENTURIES#I don’t think any ghost Jedi would be ‘disappointed’ in the way it played out considering the context#BUT. if any prequel-era character found out that Anakin would one day defeat the dark by chucking a Sith Lord down an energy well#they’d be like. It’s no shock Anakin turned to the dark side
I guarantee that someone has talked about this before but this is my two cents.
One of the biggest factors I believe that lead to Anakin turning to the Dark side of the force was the fact he was around the Chancellor quite a bit ever since he came to the temple. Since Chancellor Palpatine was Darth Sidious all along and wanted Anakin to become his new apprentice after Dooku. He even says in the Phantom Menace, “We will be paying close attention to your career” it forebodes to what is to come. Palpatine was trying to manipulate Anakin from day one so when told the only way to save Padme is to become Palpatine’s new apprentice, hearing this by the one person he trust besides Padme it only makes sense that he goes a long with it. He is desperate to save Padme and he can no longer trust the council or Obi Wan and Padme just thinks it’s bad dreams, so he is quite literally doing anything he can to save her.
Now back to the part where he doesn’t trust Obi Wan anymore. He may be able to trust him with some topics but I believe his trust with Obi Wan was completely broken after the episode ‘Deception’ from the Clone Wars Show. Anakin felt completely betrayed after being told by Obi Wan himself that it was his idea to keep it from him. I mean imagine being told by a father figure and someone you thought trusted you, telling you that he didn’t want to tell you about faking his death to make it seem believable. That is fucked up. If Obi Wan didn’t pull that stunt maybe, just maybe, Anakin would have gone to Obi Wan about his visions and would have gotten help but since he didn’t really trust Obi Wan with this information it caused him to spiral and find any possible way to save Padme.
Another very likely reason Anakin turned to the dark side was that Ahsoka left. I believe Ahsoka made the right decision for her but I believe that absolute complete cut of all contact after wards might have not been the best. Even Ahsoka realized that maybe cutting all contact wasn’t the best but she knew leaving the Jedi order was the best for her. Back to the part about Anakin, Anakin believe he failed Ahsoka after she left and he realized the pattern of the fact everyone left him and he couldn’t expect that. From when his mother died, to when Obi Wan faked his death, to Ahsoka (his Padawan) leaving the Jedi order and cutting all contact for a good chunk of time, it made him realize that everyone would leave him. He couldn’t have that, so when he started to have visions just as the ones he had before his mother died he realized he needed to do something before she left him too.
By the end of the war it was clear that Anakin was quite sad. He was known for being quite reckless and truthfully he shouldn’t have been made a knight so soon. The Jedi order drove him to madness, he was desperate in hopes of saving the last person he so desperately wanted to stay alive, so he turned to the dark side. When Palpatine asked him to become his apprentice and Anakin realized this is the only way to save Padme (technically it wasn’t but he trusted the Chancellor the most besides Padme at this time) so he agreed to be his apprentice and became the same thing he swore to destroy.
*I believe it is important to note that I don’t agree with Anakin killing millions of people in the future this is just me yapping about how I believe these were some key components besides his mother dying as to why Anakin turned to the dark side.*

No I don't think a lot of people understand when I say Bail and Breha Organa are criminaly underrated.
This two knew the freaking most important and dangerous secrets in the entire galaxy. They BOTH knew about the rebelion, knew about important imperial figures that supported the rebelion in secret, they knew about the Alliance plans and next steps, they were SO DEEP into it. And they BOTH knew about Vader, they knew that he was once Anakin Skywalker, that he had a relationship with Padme and had two children together, they knew what happen on Mustafar, they knew the location of the other twin, they knew about Palpatine being a Sith, and they hide Leia from Palpatine and Vader for 20 freaking years, and they did it like it was nothing, like it was another family thing.

The bad batch is an amazing show and here is my proof:
It has accomplished the highly unlikely but let’s be honest it doesn’t take much for me to care about stuff impossible!!
It has made me care about Sheev’s dumbass return in The Rise of Skywalker
#until this show i’ve just been living in denial about that movie#my thoughts were just ‘stop making another super secret project for paply boy he already has the death star’#but now that i am completely obsessed with Omega#i am so invested in this plot#who would’ve guessed#that a small child with the biggest heart who’s an absolute bad ass would get me to care about a plot I hate#i mean i probably would’ve guessed literally all it ever takes for me to care about a plot is a character I love#anyways yeah i’m not ready to say goodbye to this show#it means too much to me#star wars#the bad batch#the rise of skywalker#star wars animation#project necromancer#sheev palpatine#emperor palpatine#tbb omega#the clone wars#the bad batch season 3#kate's post

#24, if you haven't already answered for Anakin or Obi-- PALPATINE.
24. What other character from another fandom of yours that reminds you of them? This is an agonizing choice, because honestly what other character is doing it like Sheev? Who is genuinely good at what he does but is also the campiest villain who is living his dream? Who else could you take seriously as a dictator and have genuine feelings about the pain and suffering he spread while also this is a real scene that really happened in a big showdown fight:
That guy is unbeatable at the niche he has made for himself!
