With the passing of iconic artist Greg Hildebrandt, we thought we'd take a chance this week to shine a highlight on Shadows of the Empire, starting with the amazing work Greg and his brother Tim put into the ambitious multimedia project, that helped to launch the classic EU as we know it. The Hildebrandt brothers' art defined for many this gigantic leap into expanding the universe, when their artwork was used to capture and tie together scenes from all aspects of the project (book, comic, and game), in a series of Topps trading cards. The process of their endeavor is captured in the artbook "Star Wars: The Art of the Brothers Hildebrandt."

Star Wars Customizable Card Game promotional and play cards. “Reflections II: Expanding the Galaxy.” January, 2001.
Decipher’s Reflections II: Expanding the Galaxy series brought a handful of Expanded Universe characters to life including Mara Jade, Grand Admiral Thrawn, Talon Karrde, Corran Horn, Mirax Terrik, Dash Rendar, Prince Xizor, and Guri. Decipher also created an exclusive 5”x7” Promotional Oversized “Signature” Card depicting Mara, Talon Karrde, and Corran Horn for the summer ‘01 convention circuit. Model Shannon (Baksa) McRandle portrayed Mara Jade, while Timothy Zahn was made up to depict Talon Karrde, and Michael Stackpole was costumed to resemble Corran Horn. Stackpole had these memories to share on his blog:
The stuff done in a photostudio is really magic. At first glance, the guys they got for Corran and Karrde were right, in general. Good on the overall dimensions, hair color, eye color, etc., but they were just guys off the street. Then the hair and makeup folks went to work. Karrde got a wig and a full makeup job, which sharpened his features and totally changed him. By the end of the process - during which Tim's camera was clicking almost incessantly - I was believing the guy was Talon Karrde.
Once Karrde was made up and costumed, he was taken onto the photostage and lit. That's a fascinating process. If they put a yellow filter on a light, the light is considered "hot." A blue filter makes it "cold." The art director, photographer and photographer's assistant all discussed and debated, pulling lights this way and that, setting them up at angles, getting the model to look here or there. Then they took test Polaroid shots and digital shots and finally agreed that things were right. It was almost anticlimactic when the shooting got done, but the results were great. Talon Karrde lived.
Shannon Baksa actually did Corran's makeup, then he got lit and shot. One of my concerns had been that the model was a bit older than Corran would have been at that point, but the makeup and lighting slashed 15 years off him. And the models, they put up with a lot. At one point, while folks were off debating how Corran should be lit, the guy who had done Karrde's makeup commented that Corran was just sitting there rock-still. Corran said, "I'd move, but I'm afraid they'd have to re-light me."

Shadows of the Empire was an ambitious multimedia project that, in both retrospect and at the time, helped to set the standard for what the classic Expanded Universe could accomplish. A movie-sized project "without the movie," it spanned a novel, comic series, video game, trading cards, soundtrack, and toy line that all tied together different parts of the same story. The novel followed the main plotline, which told our core heroes' story of trying to locate and save Han (frozen in carbonite) between Episodes 5 and 6. Luke, Leia, Lando, and Chewie were joined by new cast of fan-favorites such as Dash Rendar, against antagonists Prince Xizor, Guri, and the bounty hunters.

"In all the galaxy there are few who can fly and shoot like Dash Rendar. Many years ago, as a cadet at the Imperial Academy, he continually impressed his superiors with the ability to push vessels beyond their usual limits, executing maneuvers his ships were never meant to perform. He held great promise as a future Imperial officer until a freight vessel piloted by his brother malfunctioned and crashed on Coruscant, destroying a private museum that housed many of the Emperor's treasures. Though the mishap was not the pilot's fault, the Emperor banished Rendar's family and had Dash expelled from the academy. Given his bold disregard for regulation and arrogant confidence, it is doubtful that Dash would have fit in well within the ranks of the Empire anyway. He never hesitates to boast of his skills as an expert pilot and gunner. After his dismissal from the academy, he began a career as a thief and gambler, but soon discovered that his exceptional flying skills were a great asset in the smuggling business. He quickly became very successful, making his services expensive but guaranteed for the right price.
Rendar flew a snowspeeder as a mercenary during the Battle of Hoth, and Princess Leia later hired him to protect Luke Skywalker from the dark Prince Xizor's ruthless bounty hunters. He played a significant role in the effort to overcome Xizor by destroying numerous Black Sun starships with his state of the Outrider starfighter. With Rendar at the helm, the vessel is one of the quickest and the most fearsome fighting machines in the galaxy."
- From the Shadows of the Empire Kenner toyline, (1996).
