Forever haunted by Katniss, who took months to warm up to Gale and didn’t realize she and Madge were more than just acquaintances of convenience until she was about to ship off to her death, saying that she and Thresh would have been friends if they both lived in 12

Sunrise on the Reaping theories + thoughts so far (pt 1)
here's a collection of the most likely and most interesting head-canons and stuff I've seen, both fandom-made and my own
NOT MINE BUT EXPANDED & CONNECTED BY ME:
• Tigress pov, as an audience member, maybe she's Haymitch's designer
• we got a tribute pov, a mentor pov, now we could get an audience pov because of the themes of propaganda she emphasizes... we could also get multi pov if she wants to do smth crazy and appease all fans
• Unreliable narrator, perhaps screwing with the reader's head on what actually happened in the games, capitol editing footage out
• Perhaps Tigress observes the games and originally starts off oblivious to the truth but the more she watches and helps Haymitch the more she begins to see the truth, and so the capitol punishes both her and Haymitch for it
• Lucy Gray is midnight, Haymitch/Maysilee is sunrise, Katniss/Peeta is sunset (symbolic of the progression of the games. Lucy Gray wiped out and forgotten, Haymitch the escaped glimmering sliver of change, Katniss the blazing fire and finale)
• Maysilee wore the mockingjay pin in the arena but the capitol edited it out of all the footage
• Themes of light vs dark, truth vs lies, the audience starts out unaware and conflicted but comes to see how things really are
• Katniss parents could appear??? Maybe we'll see Mr. and Mrs. Everdeen fall in love??
MY THEORIES + THOUGHTS:
• (canon) The arena is an illusion. Flowers, water, fruit, mountains, animals. It's beautiful, heavenly, too good to be true, it doesn't seem real... well, it's not real. Everything seems normal and like you know what it is, but the Entire Setting is actually poisonous and deadly. JUST like the theme of propaganda and lies, she says the book is about. The arena itself is a meta layer to things not being as they appear.
• the cover will have a mockingjay and a sunrise or sun-flare, gold against purple
• the "sunrise" in the title is symbolism, for a person and a theme, likely symbolic of Maysilee Donner because of her kindness and humanity and spirit casting light in the face of violence and war (the reaping). A light the capitol would've snuffed out, to hide the truth. (I have a whole essay on this + maysilee's importance pls check my feed)
• Maysilee is the real mockingjay, and very important, not just a random dead background character who passed down the pin to Katniss. We know how Collins' brain works. Look at TBOSAS. Look at how she foreshadowed Lucy Gray as early as the first book.
• the mockingjay isn't just one person, but a symbol of resistance and goodness and freedom, that anyone can take on as a mantle, an idea rather than tied to one thing or person. Lucy Gray, Rue, Katniss, and likely Maysilee.
• a rebellion almost happened with the mockingjay pin and Maysilee and Haymitch and perhaps Tigress seeing the truth last minute, but the capitol snuffed it out and destroyed all the evidence of such a thing ever happening, including Haymitch's family and punishing Tigress, leading Panem and the readers themselves in the dark and at peace. Maysilee is the warm sun to bring the spark of a fire, her pin symbolically passes onto Katniss through her niece, thus passing on the resistance and legacy. ....symbolic of how the mockingjay had the will to survive, even when it was destroyed and wiped out.... It escaped and became stronger in the face of its enemies....
• ...for all we know, Katniss' dad didn't die in a coal mining accident, but perhaps was a rebel himself and the capitol planted explosions in the mines to get rid of him. we can't just blindly trust the narrative.
• If Haysilee is a parallel to Everlark, what if Haymitch's girlfriend is a Gale figure? This isn't just because I'm a haysilee shipper I'm built to be a multishipper I'm FIGHTING not to be biased I'm openminded, but i feel the haysilee content in my bones and it's definitely a possibility
• the capitol (and Snow) believes that humanity is vile, that humans will always give into instinct and fend for themselves, that you can't trust or love or anyone lest it lead to your downfall. So... If Ballad was about humanity's corruption, perhaps Reaping is about humanity's goodness (the bond between Haymitch and Maysilee, Tigress seeing the truth despite being a capitol/audience member, perhaps the Capitol cut the footage of that bond to prevent a rebellion like Everlark's relationship later induces)
• Most people are saying this book will be super depressing and focused on the capitol's propaganda succeeding to stop a rebellion, and I do agree, but, that doesn't cancel out highlighting themes of goodness and friendship but rather enhances them. Perhaps that very thing is what we're missing from the footage, what the capitol succeeded in covering up, raw humanity being the thing that defies their propaganda the most, and punished anyone who acted otherwise (Haymitch, Tigress...)
PART 2 IS COMING SOON to address the fandom discourse with my personal thoughts on whether this book will be about Haymitch and if we need more District 12.
and why Collins would logically choose to tell this story (regardless of pov because that could be anything at this point she'll upset someone either way)

what my favorite thg characters would be doing in a modern au: (i did as many characters as i could but bolded my favorites)
cashmere, former lingerie model, now a makeup artist
gloss being a men's underwear model
glimmer works as a student at the cosmetology school effie runs, training to become a hairdresser while pursuing fashion design as a side hobby
marvel as an aspiring and semi-successful actor even if it's just in commercials
cato, former college football star, as a personal trainer
clove and enobaria teach self defense/knife throwing classes and clove considers pursuing professional cooking one day
brutus... probably does the same thing cato does
beetee & wiress design technology/are computer programmers/software engineers (can you tell idk how that industry really works) for a big company
haymitch is a bartender but he also hangs around effie's cosmetology school like a surly and mean cat that wants attention
annie cresta is a marine biology student at the graduate level at university somewhere and is doing research/getting a phD (or a master's idk the difference sorry)
finnck works for the same modeling company gloss does but does beach themed shoots/products and helps with his father's fishing gear store
peeta is obviously a baker and delly works at the bakery as well
katniss teaches archery classes to local children to take them off their parents' hands
prim is at nursing school getting a degree with plans to be a nurse practitioner
foxface studies botany/plant biology at the same college annie does
gale.... uhm. i don't care about him but i'll say he either works in a warehouse, a 9 to 5 in an office somewhere, or assists katniss's hunting classes. i think he'd like college though so maybe he'd learn something there
madge is a strawberry farmer!
johanna... is difficult to predict as to what she would want in a modern au but i think she would work a 9 to 5 at something because, money, and then run a snarky podcast on the side/have a popular twitter account
lucy gray baird is an old famous singer-actress from glamorous 50s style hollywood, like evelyn hugo, and coral can be lucy gray's celia st james
i couldn't think of much for the rest of the bosas characters sorry

Thinking about the tragedy of Madge and Maysilee again. Both around the same age when they died, both sharing a strong physical resemblance.

Propaganda below:
Madge Undersee propaganda:
she LITERALLY gave Katniss her mockingjay pin. She's the reason that Katniss is known as THE MOCKINGJAY!!!! plus she's cool
Manikin propaganda:
Enemy featured wearing distinctive masks in the "Of Masks and Dragons" trailer, but were changed to be headless in the final game for unknown reasons. The Manikin armor set in the game has a different mask. It's a cool mask.
Toph Beifong's beta design did not receive any propaganda

Please sort The Hunger Games characters into HoGwaRtS Houses :
For reference (according wikia)
Hufflepuff : Loyalty and hard working
Gryffindor : Bravery and chivalry
Ravenclaw : Wit and learning
Slytherin : Cunning and ambition
You can include as many characters as you want/can.
And you can give a reason why do you sort that character into that house.
Thank you so much 😊
PS : this is just for fun, if you don't like HP or THG, just ignore this ask 🔥
@curiousnonny
Hey, Anon!
Okay, this should be fun
Hufflepuff: Loyalty and hard working
Peeta Mellark (Tell me he should be in Gryffindor. Change my mind. I DARE you. I will fight anyone on this. Peeta is a born Hufflepuff and there will be no arguments on this.)
Effie Trinket
Mags Flanagan
Primrose Everdeen
Annie Cresta
Madge Undersee (I know she's a minor character but I still like her.)
Gryffindor : Bravery and chivalry
Finnick Odair
Katniss Everdeen
Johanna Mason
Gale Hawthorne
Ravenclaw : Wit and learning
Haymitch Abernathy (I knew he had to be here from the start. It’s actually a bit of a controversy between Ravenclaw and Slytherin)
Cinna
Jackson
Cressida
Plutarch Heavensbee
Beetee Latier
Paylor (Nearly forgot about her.)
Slytherin : Cunning and ambition (Just a reminder, just because you're a Slytherin does NOT mean you're a bad person. For example: Albus Severus Potter. I mean, yeah, you could make some stupid choices but who hasn't, at this point? But it also doesn't mean you're not necessarily a good person. The same applies to the other houses.)
Boggs (I had this planned from the start. I cannot and will not change my mind about this. I can see him in this house.)
Alma Coin (But that was expected)
Coriolanus Snow (DEFINITELY EXPECTED.)
THIS ASK WAS FUN
I think that's all I can think of for now. Thanks for the ask, Anon, it really helped me to think more about these characters.
Also, I’m very sorry about not responding to the other asks. I’m a bit busy right now, so I’m taking the ones that first pop up in my inbox. I will get to answering them soon, though.
Cheers!

Week 13
What do you think about Madge Undersee? Any headcanons? Do you think her gift of the gold Mockingjay pin to Katniss just a coincidence? Or is there any connection to the rebellion in District 12? Why do you think she brought the morphling after Gale’s whipping in Catching Fire? How did you feel about Madge’s exclusion from the movies? Who would be your fancast for Madge if there is a new adaptation? Thank you so much :) @curiousnonny

The Hunger Games, 2012 (Gary Ross) and The Hunger Games, 2008 (Suzanne Collins)
It's so interesting that, from the very beginning, Gale is established as someone who has a disregard for human life, and who does not truly view those different from him as "people." We see this here, where he dehumanises the children Katniss will have to fight in the Games. We see this in Gale's vocal resentment of Madge Undersee, in how he despises her for the privilege she was born with and grew up with.
This "us vs. them" infighting and mentality that Gale falls for (a mentality that the Capitol propagates, and that the Games act as a metaphor for) is one that eventually leads him to kill innocent children.
This thinking is also something Katniss must learn to break out of -- when she grapples with killing her opponents in the Games, who are truly just children, or when she realises "who the real enemy is" at the end of Catching Fire.
But Gale is unable to grow past this. He's willing to kill children (!) who are innocents, who haven't committed any crime other than being born in the wrong place at the wrong time -- just like Madge, who Gale despised in Book 1.
And Gale obviously DOES feel bad about "killing" Prim. But what's worse is the thought that, if it wasn't Prim who died, if it was just some random faceless people, would Gale still care?
I think Gale is a really interesting character whose development is so tragic yet still makes so much sense. It's a shame to see people write him off so quickly without seeing the analytical, thematic, and political value that we can gain by exploring his story and ideology.

thinking about madge undersee and the mockingjay pin, and how her character had the opportunity to be so much MORE like the history of mockingjays in general being rebellious, her aunt dying in the arena w haymitch, her dad being the mayor with access to info from other districts, the fact that she INSISTED katniss take the pin,,,,, idk i think she could've been so much if she had the time

On my reread of, The Hunger Games, the passage where Katniss and Gale come to trade strawberries to the mayor on Page 12 caught my attention.
Madge comes to the door.
Today her drab school outfit has been replaced by an expensive white dress, and her blonde hair is done up with a pink ribbon. Reaping clothes.
“Pretty dress,” says Gale.
Madge shoots him a look, trying to see if it’s a genuine compliment or if he’s just being ironic. It is a pretty dress, but she would never be wearing it ordinarily. She presses her lips together and then smiles. “Well, if I end up going to the Capitol, I want to look nice, don’t I?”
Gale is confused. And Katniss guesses that Madge is just messing with him.
“You won’t be going to the Capitol,” Gale says coolly. His eyes land on a small, circular pin that adorns her dress. Real gold. Beautifully crafted. It could keep a family in bread for months. “What can you have? Five entries? I had six when I was just twelve years old.”
“That’s not her fault,” I say.
“No, it’s no one’s fault. Just the way it is,” says Gale.
Madge’s face has become closed off.
Gale is angry, because it’s usually the seam kids who are reaped for the games since they have more entries in the bowl. And it seems like he believes Madge has no right be worrying about being reaped, since she has less entries and should be safe as a merchant.
But Madge knows from personal experience that merchant kids can be reaped too, because her own Aunt, Maysilee Donner, was reaped in the 50th hunger games and died in the arena.
I just think Madge has so much strength to stay calm in that moment. Honestly, I probably would have slapped Gale for his insensitive attitude. He has no idea of her loss. People only see her as the Mayor’s daughter with the nice house and clothes, and don’t see that she has her own losses and heartaches to deal with. We shouldn’t judge a book by its cover.
And her mother, Mrs. Undersee, was so upset by her twin’s death that even 24 years later she spends most her time locked in her room and addicted to morphling. Madge is probably pretty isolated and lonely in her house with her dad busy working and her mom in constant pain.
Madge gives Katniss the mockingjay pin to wear in the games. Her Aunt’s pin. This pin is the symbol of the rebellion. And it makes me so sad that Katniss doesn’t find out until, Catching Fire, who Maysilee is and that the mockingjay pin originally belonged to her.
Madge is a character who is kept mostly in the background and who ultimately is killed when district 12 is fired bombed, but she’s so important and significant to the story.
Also Madge should have been in the movies.
