Will we ever get anything quite like Code Geass again?
I don't think it's possible.
Code Geass is Japanese nationalist propaganda disguised as a global political drama, disguised as a military mecha show, disguised as yaoibait, disguised as a teen melodrama, disguised as a high school romcom, disguised as a Pizza Hut commercial...
...except those layers aren't layers at all, but are instead comingled in a giant snake ball of insanity.
The lead writer, Ichirō Ōkouchi, only ever worked as an episode writer for other shows prior to Code Geass, and never took the helm of an anime series ever again. And it shows. [EDIT: Several people have pointed out his other lead writing credits to me. So I misread Wikipedia—sue me. I maintain that this guy is a better episode writer than he is a lead writer.]
The minute-to-minute pacing is impeccable from a mechanical standpoint, with tension and stakes rising to ever-higher peaks, balanced out by the slow simmers of the b-plot and c-plot. It keeps the viewer on the edge of their seat at all times. Meanwhile, the large-scale plot is the most off-the-wall middle school nonsense I've ever seen, continually surprising the viewer by pulling twists too dumb to have ever have been on their radar—and therefore more effective in terms of raw shock value.
"Greenlight it!" was the mantra of this anime's production. It must have been. It has, in no particular order, all of the following:
Character designs from CLAMP, the foremost yaoi/BL group in Japan at the time—for characters who are only queer insofar as they can bait the audience, and only straight insofar as they can be more misogynist to the female cast.
Speaking of the female cast, hoo boy the fanservice. We've all seen anime girls breast boobily, with many cases more egregious than Code Geass, but there's something special about it happening immediately after—or sometimes in the middle of!—scenes of military conflict and ethnic cleansing.
Pizza Hut product placement everywhere, in every conceivable situation. High-speed chases, light slice-of-life scenes, intimate character moments, all of it. Gotta have Pizza Hut.
The anime-only Pizza Hut mascot, Cheese-kun. He wears a fedora.
The most hilarious approximations of European names—which I would love to see more often, frankly. Names like, I dunno, "Count Schnitzelgrübe zi Blanquezzio."
A depiction of China that is wholly removed from any modern reality, with red-and-gold pagodas, ornamental robes, scheming eunuchs, and a brainwashed child empress. There's a character named General Tsao, like the chicken.
Inappropriate free-form jazz in the soundtrack, intruding at the most unexpected times.
A secret cabal not unlike the Illuminati, run by an immortal shota with magic powers, holding influence all across the world, at the highest levels of government. They matter for approximately three episodes.
An unexpected insert scene of a schoolgirl using the corner of a table to masturbate. She's doing it to thoughts of her crush, the princess Euphemia—because she believes Euphemia to be as racist as she herself is, and that gets her off. This interrupts an unrelated scene of our protagonist faction planning their next move, which then resumes as if uninterrupted.
Said schoolgirl, in a fit of hysteria, threatens to detonate a worse-than-nuclear bomb in the middle of her school. She then goes on to develop an even more destructive version of that bomb, and become a war criminal, in a chain of cause-and-effect stemming from the moment she finds out that Euphemia wasn't actually that racist.
A character called "the Earl of Pudding."
A premise that asks us to believe that the name Lelouch is normal enough that he didn't need to change it when he went into hiding as an ordinary civilian. "No, that's not Prince Strimbleford von Vanquish! That's our classmate, Strimbleford Smith."
The collective unconscious, a la Carl Jung, within which the protagonist fights his villainous father for control over the fate of humankind. After this is over, the anime just keeps going for about ten more episodes.
An episode in which a mech tosses a giant pizza.
A gay yandere sleeper agent who can manipulate the perception of time.
Chess being played very badly, even to the untrained eye. Lelouch frequently checkmates his opponent by moving his king. This goes hand-in-hand with the anime's crock of bad chess symbolism.
A fictional drug that can most succinctly be described as "nostalgia heroin."
Roller-skating mecha in knightly armor, and some of the most sickass mecha fight choreography that I've seen.
I could go on and on, but I think you get the picture. This anime is what the average Westerner in 2006 thought anime was, and it was made in a confluence of factors that cannot be replicated. I've never had so much fun watching something that I found so... insulting. Repugnant. Ridiculous. Baffling. I love it sincerely.
Catch me cosplaying Lloyd Asplund at a con sometime, or maybe even the big gay loser himself, Lelouch vi Britannia.

I just found out Sun Wukong translates to Baby Boy (sun) wake to void (wukong). Meaning anyone calling him Sun is calling him baby boy.
Yup!
From the Yu translation:
Tumblr media
Subodhi's reasoning is that the written character for the type of monkey Wukong resembles can be used in two ways; Old Lady (Hu = Gu Yue) or Baby Boy (Sun = Zi Xi) if a radical is removed from it.
But you just *know* Subodhi takes one look at this happy little monkey asking him to be his teacher and immediately thinks "baby boy, baby"

Comparing the medievalification of Czech and English language in KCD/KCD2 is so interesting.
For those who are unaware, yes, the games were made by a Czech studio, yes, the lead writers are Czech, yes, the source code is Czech. The items, quests, dialog lines etc. carry Czech words as part of their identification. But the primary language we're meant to consume it in is English: Czech is more of an afterthought, a language for the (Czech) devs to properly place their easter eggs in.
In both languages, the font for in-game writing is inspired by Rotunda, corresponding more to what scribes would use in the south of Europe, rather than in our part of the Holy Roman Empire. Because the blackletter which would have actually been used is fucking hard to read (literally the one good thing the N*zis did was to ban Fraktur, may it rot in hell).
We can no longer understand the language of 1403 very well. Medieval Czech would most likely sound to us like we are having a stroke. Jan Hus is the reaszon we don't wrzite like thys btw, as he was the guy to suggest writing acčentš above letteřs, replacing the di- and multigraphs that survived in Polish.
Canterbury Tales are from about the same period in English, and 1403 is smack in the beginning of the Big Vowel Shift. So again. It would sound like you're having a stroke. Or like a couple of Danes are making fun of you.
Which is why both languages are simply using their modern form with some anachronisms to "sell the bit."
Most of the time, it's enough to just have the characters talk about their daily stuff - after all, a modern person rarely talks about swordfights, brailes, or working the field. In Czech (more in KCD1 than in KCD2, weirdly enough) they pepper in slight Germanization. Most of us don't speak German, but there are some basic words that survive into the present vernacular, and while most don't use them daily, it's expected that you understand them. If you let the characters speak "common Czech" and not a super prescriptive version of the language from books, the illusion is complete without being overly intrusive.
The English language doesn't have the same luxury: it's too goddamn cosmopolitan. A stand-in for the old language has to be a collection of accents from the British Isles. Maybe Canada and New Zealand. But not Australia. This time, the common set of old-timey vocabulary definitely cannot be German (too much drift), or just plain ol' English-English (boring) or French (which would be popular among the upper, but not lower classes). What remains is using archaic words for normal stuff. The list of eligible words is surprisingly short. The language suffers from success, having too vast a vocabulary - an archaic word for an American would sound pants in a medieval context for a Londoner, or vice versa (I was told a long time ago that AE conserves the older forms a bit more than BE, but that could have been a ploy to make me more accepting of American grammar). Which is why you, bizarrely enough, get wenches instead of girls and handgonnes instead of pistols.

The FSYY Body Count List
…Because when you are trying to procrastinate an assignment, you'll focus your attention on anything that isn't the assignment, no matter how strange the subject matter is.
So here is a list of the individual Chan juniors' body count during the course of the FSYY novel. Fantastic creatures (non-sapient, not yaoguais that have cultivated a human form, but aren't regular animals either) are listed separately.
Nezha: 15 characters
-Li Gen the Yaksha (Qiankun Ring to the head)
-Ao Bing (pulled off steed with sash, Qiankun Ring to the head, tendons pulled out)
-Verdant Cloud Boy (archery accident)
-Yao Shaosi (speared)
-Colored Cloud Immortal (speared)
-Deng Zhong (knocked off steed with Qiankun Ring, then speared)
-Ji Li (speared)
-Li Qi (knocked down with ring, speared)
-Pong Hong (knocked down with ring, speared)
-Wang Bao (knocked off steed with ring, speared)
-Ma Zhong (incinerated by the Nine Fire Dragon Bell Cover)
-Long Anji (knocked down by a ring better than his, speared)
-Gao Lanying (didn't get her needles out in time, knocked down, speared)
-Ding Ce (killed by the Qiankun Ring)
-Lu Renjie (knocked off his steed by the Qiankun Ring in a fatal blow)
Note: I didn't count the Colored Cloud Boy, Lady Shiji's other disciple that gets bonked by the Qiankun Ring, because his death is never confirmed, even though he was already "struggling for his life on the ground" when Shiji comes out of the cave.
Yang Jian: 13 characters, 2 creatures
-Chen Jiugong (speared)
-Zhou Xin (Skyhowler'ed, then chopped in half)
-Bi Huan (Skyhowler'ed, then speared)
-Wen Liang (tried to escape after being bricked by Nezha, got hit in the shoulder by Yang Jian's slingshot, fell off his horse, and died)
-Yu Hua (Leizhen Zi knocked him off his steed, Yang Jian finished him off with his polearm)
-Zhang Kui's mom (indirectly, he tricked Zhang Kui into killing her via transformation arts)
-Chang Hao (Yang Jian transformed into a flying centipede, snipped its head off, reverted to his true form, chopped up the snake, then incinerated it with Five Thunder Arts)
-Wu Long (Yang Jian turned into a golden rooster and pecked it to pieces)
-Yang Xian (tried to flee after seeing Yang Jian turn into a tiger, chopped in half)
-Dai Li (Skyhowler'ed, then speared)
-Guo Chen (speared)
-Lei Kun (speared)
-The Nine-headed Pheasant Demoness (indirectly: Skyhowler'ed, then decapitated by Zhou soldiers on the execution ground under Yang Jian's watch)
Creatures:
The Flower Fox Ferret, Mo Lishou's monstrous pet (Yang Jian burst out of its body after being eaten, tearing it into two halves in the process)
The One-horned Black Smoke Beast, Zhang Kui's magical steed (indirectly, same as Zhang Kui's mom)
Huang Tianhua: 7 characters
Chen Tong (Fire Dragon Dart sucked into Tianhua's flower basket, then decapitated by the beam of the Moye Sword)
The Four Mo Brothers (killed by the Heart-piercing Nail)
Yu Qin (killed by the Fire Dragon Dart)
Chen Geng (knocked off steed by the Fire Dragon Dart, then decapitated)
Yang Ren: 6 characters
Fang Yizhen (incinerated by the Five Fire Fan)
Li Ping (caught in the fan's AOE while trying to persuade Lv Yue)
Chen Geng (incinerated by the fan)
Lv Yue (incinerated by the fan)
Yu Xian & Yu Zhao (incinerated together)
Leizhen Zi: 5 characters
Xin Huan (Skyhowler'ed, then finished off by Leizhen Zi with a staff to the head)
Zhou Xin (Staff to the head)
Peng Zun (knocked off his steed via a staff to the shoulder, then decapitated)
Yu Guang (staff to the head)
Lei Peng (KO'ed with staff)
Huang Tianxiang: 4 characters
Feng Lin (speared)
Tao Rong (speared)
Gou Zhang (speared)
Gao Gui (speared)
Wei Hu: 4 characters
Yang Wenhui (Demon-subduing Club to the head)
Yu Da (clubbed)
Zhang Kui (clubbed)
Jade Pipa Demoness (indirectly: decapitated by soldiers under his supervision)
Jinzha: 3 characters
Wang Mo (immobilized by the Dragon Stake, then killed with a sword)
Yang Sen (immobilized by Dragon Stake, killed with sword)
Dou Rong (indirectly: Jinzha immobilized him with the Dragon Stake, but Jiang Wenhuan made the killing blow)
Muzha: 2 characters
Li Xingba (killed with one of Muzha's twin flying swords)
Lady Chedi (killed with twin flying sword)
...
Final Thoughts
-If you count the creatures, Nezha and Yang Jian's kill counts will be equal, though several of Yang Jian's kills are indirect.
-Jiang Ziya: tfw your logistic guy, responsible for overseeing the supply line, has a body count as high as your designated army vanguard.
-Yeah, Yang Jian's official job in the Zhou army is the Grain Transport Officer. I think it really fits his personality——the clever, ruthless trickster who's also a mature, polite disciple.
-Though Leizhen Zi's kill counts can't match Nezha and Yang Jian, there are multiple descriptions of him knocking down whole sections of the city wall with a single staff strike. Maybe he's the anti-fortification specialist of the team or something. /lh
-Huang Tianhua: the ranged attacker who keeps trying to be a melee DPS. /j
-For real though, he seems to rely a lot more on the Fire Dragon Darts from a slain foe, and when the Heart-piercing Nail is used after the Mo brothers' demise, it only ends up going straight through Xin Huan's wing and the Winged Immortal's right arm.
-Yang Ren always gives me the impression of a soft-spoken bureaucrat who gradually discovered his inner pyromaniac after receiving the Five Fire Fan.
-My list is only counting the named characters, but everyone on this list who's still alive during the Ten Thousand Immortal Formation Arc are described as unleashing their might and treasures during the battle.
-Considering the AOE effects of some of these treasures, they probably send a lot more filler NPCs into the Investiture.
-BTW, there are 151 names on the Investiture who are labelled as having died in the Ten Thousand Immortal Formation. 123, if you leave out the 28 Lunar Mansions, who are killed by the 4 Immortal Swords seized from Patriarch Tongtian's previous formation.
-How many percent of those 123 kills each Chan Sect participant is responsible for is up to your imagination.
-Forget about the Nezha age discourse——Huang Tianxiang was probably about 10 when he made his first kill, since the text described his head as "still bald". If I remember correctly, in the Ming dynasty, before 10, most children had their heads shaved completely bald, or leaving only a few patches of hair tied up in a braid/bun.
-He's also 14 when he made his third kill, and 17 when he was executed by Qiu Yin. Four chapters prior, Huang Tianhua died to Gao Jineng.
-Jinzha and Muzha: tfw your total kill counts combined is only a third of your little brother's.
-The one detail I've observed is that Jinzha ends up rescuing/attempting to rescue Nezha, Huang Tianhua, Jiang Ziya, and Tianhua again (together with Muzha) after they get knocked down.
-I feel kinda bad for Muzha when I look at the numbers. He does cut off one of Lv Yue's arms after recovering from his first plague attack, though.

Here is a list of cdrama actors who I used to avoid watching at all costs that I changed my mind about after watching them be good in something - an incomplete list since I am sure I am forgetting people. (I won’t make a kdrama one because I only had like three MLs on it in terms of working actors and no FLs and two of MLs come off it by now)
Hu Yitian - the most wooden block to ever block thought I. And then saw the 1930s pilot epic Defying the Storm.
Ju Jingyi - never thought she was capable of any impression until Chinese Paladin 4
Dylan Wang - probably the biggest example on this list. I remember mocking whoever was insane enough to cast him in LBFAD. And then I had to eat all of those words.
Zhang Jingyi - I was so appalled by her acting in Fall in Love that I decided to skip anything she was ever in from then on. And then I watched L&P because I had the first ep downloaded on my phone and nothing else available and went aaaaa!!! I adore her now.
Deng Wei - he was background noise in so many dramas; it’s not that I disliked him per se, he just didn’t register. And then I watched LYF1 and he ended up being so good and playing arguably my favorite male cdrama character of the year.
Yang Zi - before all the howls start, yes she’s a huge A-list star in a ton of beloved dramas. And I adored her so much in Battle of Changsha (which is a masterpiece btw, go watch!) The problem is I didn’t enjoy her in anything since and Changsha was in 2013. To me it felt she was just coasting and then…LYF1 - my fave female character of the year hands down and she was soooo good! In fact, an OTP portrayed by her and Deng Wei, were my OTP of the year and if someone told me that before summer, I’d have checked them for concussion.
Joseph Zeng - I thought he couldn’t act much but in retrospect nobody could have performed well in the horrifying dramas I first saw him in (that one with Li Landi is guaranteed to induce a stroke in anyone) and then I saw Heroes and went bzuuuuhhhh and everything I’ve seen him in since he was good.
Zhang Zhehan - until Word of Honor. And then we all know how that went.
Wu Lei - ok this is an odd duck on the list because even when I didn’t like him, I couldn’t deny he was a solid actor. I just loathed his miscasting in TLB so much - he was visually all wrong and there was zero chemistry with DD and honestly he was so boring to watch on screen. So after that drama I went I guess he’s growing into a bad actor, huh? And then came LLTG and it turned that TLB was an aberration not a trend.
Then there are a couple of actors where I admit they are wooden as hell but I find them so good to look at I don’t care - Yukee Chen and Alan Yu. Some actors who I used to love but who I shudder when I see cast now (Peng Xiaoran is a great example), and of course the remaining Hall of You Are a Pretty Tree Plant Yourself Far From Me - Cheng Xiao, Yang Chaoye, Fan Cheng Cheng, Gulinazha, Yang Yang, the no longer working Zheng Shuang, Neo Hu, Ao Ruipeng, Wang Churan, Chen Duling (tho I have some small hope for Wang Churan and ARP if they get a good enough director and YCY was watchable in Heroes so if she gets a miracle director like Li Muge you never know. And CDL is an odd duck where I don’t think she has much range or is likable as a heroine but she mostly picks roles where she’s 90% rbf and it works so keep trucking!)

Wang Chuan Feng Hua Lu (忘川风华录) Masterpost
Tumblr media
Wang Chuan Feng Hua Lu (忘川风华录) is a Vocal synth (Vocaloid and SynthV) music project. It consists of songs themed around different figures throughout Chinese history. The project is a collaboration between different artists and creatives, with music and videos featuring prominent traditional Chinese elements. The project's title translates to "The Records of Magnificence of the Wangchuan" - In Chinese mythology, "Wangchuan" (or River of Forgetting) is a river in the Underworld that can rid one of their past life's memories, similar to the river Lethe.
A mobile game adaptation has also been developed by NetEast. Unfortunately, I haven't played it so I can't give much insight on it. However, I assume that its premise is similar to that of the idea behind the project as a whole: all these historical figures meeting each other in the Underworld after they died. Maybe.
You can find all the songs on Bilibili. The official Weibo can be found here. The game's website, which includes all characters appearing so far in the game, can be found here, and its Weibo can be found here.
(If you prefer YouTube, I've also put together a handy playlist. Please know that most of these videos are reposts though, so please watch the original Bilibili MVs if you can!)
This blog is where I will be posting everything I feel like I need to say about the songs in this project. A lot of it is lifted from my Twitter account but will be in much more detail. Note that I probably won't touch collab songs, or songs that don't focus solely on the project's own characters.
Disclaimer: I do not speak Chinese, nor am I an expert on Chinese history. Therefore, I cannot reliably translate the lyrics to these songs, nor my words should be taken as gospel. I am merely a nerd gushing about my hyperfixation.

Note
Besides the code names, do the TTB characters have any other nicknames or terms of endearment for each other?
I can’t do a detailed list but off the top of my head;
Bumblebee/Benjamin: Baby Boy/Leprotto (Sunstreaker, ie. ‘little bunny’), Ahrairah (Jazz/Prowl), Benjie/Benjie Elliot (HotRod ie. his name + Billy Elliot)
Ratchet/Ronan: Ratch, Doc, Blackjack (Windblade, who introduces him to the show), Patch (Dinobots ie. skin graft on his face), Assclepius (Sunstreaker)
Prowl/Preston: Baobei (Jazz, ie. 'babe), Prick (Basically anyone not on good terms with him), Capn’ (Hotrod, respectfully after Prowl loses an eye and saves him from the Functionist Universe)
Jazz/Jace: Jayzee (Hotrod, from his initials 'Jace Zayden'), Jinwu (Prowl ie. ‘Golden Crow’ East Asian myth, meant to represent the sun)
Springer/Spencer: Hu Zi (Prowl/Jazz, ie. 'little tiger'), Spence, Mametaro (Windblade ie. 'bean boy' referring to his cuteness as a kid, bight green hair + unique origin), Cabbage Patch (HotRod ie. green hair + little fella + unique origin)
Mirage/Meirion: Merry (Hound), Casper (HotRod)
OP/Omar: Aul Man (HotRod), Glowstick Prime (Whirl), Al-Khattab (Shockwave)
