the most important aspect of a story - the reason we as readers remember a work - is character change

and that change must be earned, often through suffering, and often despite the character's resistance to that change (or even wanting to deal with the issues that would prompt said change)

and optimally while there's a ticking plot-clock

and especially in the Person Who Learned Better narrative structure, where the entire plot hinges on the character changing by gaining important insights into the world, human nature, themselves, or something else central to the rest of the story

Ebenezer Scrooge is the perfect example of the man who learned better and - despite himself and his lifelong resistance to kindness or generosity - who changes, making his life-changing epiphany and actions in the end so much more powerful for the reader (and cementing this work in our cultural legacy)

"Scrooge only changed because he saw how nobody mourned him after his death" NO NO NO NO. You don't get it! The last spirit only worked because of the spirits that came before softening him up! If the spirits had shown him dead and ungrieved only it would not work. As the night goes on amid the visits Scrooge is already visibly changing. He's different after the first spirit and even more so after the second. And it's because of how much he's already changed that the final spirit is able to succeed

the funniest meltdown ive ever had was in college when i got so overstimulated that i could Not speak, including over text. one of my friends was trying to talk me through it but i was solely using emojis because they were easier than trying to come up with words so he started using primarily emojis as well just to make things feel balanced. this was not the Most effective strategy... until. he tried to ask me "you okay?" but the way he chose to do that was by sending "👉🏼👌🏼❓" and i was so shocked by suddenly being asked if i was dtf that i was like WHAT???? WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY TO ME?????????? and thus was verbal again

Honestly, I love it when characters relapse. When someone who’s gotten over their anger issues falls into a situation so out of their depth they fall back on their old habits. When someone who’s learned to open up becomes a recluse again in order to cope with something outside their control.

There’s just something so horrible, so toxic, about watching a character grow and then slip back into their old selves in order to cope, bc you know they still care, that they’re the same inside, but watching them hurt so hard they don’t know what else to do brings a sense of catharsis.

i had a vision… 🇵🇰 miku in a casual gharara with a rubab… with an organza shawl… with little jhumka hoops………. i can see the end of the horizon….. hatsune miku !!

notes:

the rubab is a traditional pakistani stringed instrument

a gharara is a type of pants that are flared and pleated below the knee usually paired with knee or thigh length traditional shirts

jhumka are ornate bell like earrings

and the specific style of flat shoes depicted here are called khussay.

rose garlands called gajray are sometimes worn by women as bracelets or around hair buns etc, as depicted here. variations exist for different flowers too, such as the jasmine, which is the national flower.

But not like, systematically, he just like, smiles a lot and plans little activities. He's being undermined by a teenage intern. He's gracious about The Board's racism. He carries elaborate fruit baskets on his motorcycle while working through the weekend. He averages firing more than one person per week. He dresses great. He almost got the CEO's daughter killed. He delivers even the most outrageous lies with panache. He doesn't have a single true ally. But! he is going to do whatever he has to do!
