Writing Tips For You (as if I don’t currently have insane writer’s block)

-Can’t start a scene? Write the setting instead. What is the lighting like? Is this place comfortable? Is it familiar or not? What should you point out now so it doesn’t suddenly appear when it becomes important for the characters? SET! YOUR! STAGE!

-Everyone says “show, don’t tell”. I like to think of that as “what are your character’s physical reactions? What are they feeling?” You can say “Character looked dismayed”, or you can say “Character grimaced with dismay.” See the difference?

-Struggling with dialogue? Talk to yourself while you’re writing. You might be blocking yourself if you subconsciously think some dialogue feels unnatural.

-Context, context, context! This applies to everything from the small interactions to the big plots. Every force has an equal and opposite reaction, allow interactions and events to grow as such.

-Context, context, context pt 2! But worldbuilding! If your character is performing an act, how does that fit into the physical reality they already exist in? How is it possible? Can you imply (imply, not explain) that these things are commonplace or why they wouldn’t be?

-Build the action. (Stealing this from theater class like twelve years ago.) You can’t just put a character into the scene and say ‘they made a sandwhich’. What has to happen for the sandwhich to be made? Your character has to walk into the kitchen, open the cupboard, get out a plate, get out the jam and peanut butter, get out the knives, open the fridge, get out the bread, close the fridge, open the bread bag, lay down two slices of bread on the plate, close the bag, open the first jar, pick up the first knife, scoop up the jam, slather it on the bread, put the knife down, close the first jar- and so on and so forth. Every small step is necessary for you to understand, and to engage your readers. You don’t have to go into ridiculous detail like I just did, but even understanding that for yourself helps remember the ‘state’ of your scene at any given moment.

-See above, but it’s not a scene and a sandwhich. The scene is your whole story and the sandwhich is your plot. What small steps MUST happen to reach the climax? Does changing one of those small steps change the result? How?

-Emotions are best portrayed when you have experienced them or can get insight from those who have experienced them. Let yourself get emotional in a scene. Allow yourself to be empathetic and vicariously experience what your characters are.

-Reread your own work! Your writing style and characterizations can change over time, but if you feel like you’re losing them, don’t be afraid to look at where you started to ground yourself!

-Proofread your own work 2-12 hours after you finish a section! Not while you’re writing! Don’t let yourself get carried away with writing things ‘right’, just get the ideas out.

-Have a friend or volunteer proofread for you too! This can help pick out things you repeatedly say, words you might misuse, grammar and punctuation that might need correction, and phrases that are hard to digest or don’t make sense.

-Make sure you’re making an effort to use regionally/era specific words and slang both in dialogue and in your writing. There are plenty of websites and videos online that list and discuss regional and era slang worldwide. Not to mention, we can connect with people all over the world using the web just to ask! Using incorrect phrases can really break immersion and make characters feel- well, out of character! I.E. an 80s jock saying ‘dope bruh’, American characters (generally) saying ‘lift’ instead of ‘elevator’, so on and so forth.

-Research research research! Research bloodloss limits, research how laws and jobs operate in different regions and countries, research weirdly specific myths and biblical themes, research as much as you can! You can only build a richer environment to write in!

-If you actively want to implement themes, allow them to reflect the experiences of your character. Example character is an Italian American who was orphaned at 13 after his orthodox Catholic parents died, he has been in and out of foster care his whole life, and the moment he got out his military job became strict and he allowed himself to be blackmailed to protect a child in a similar position. This has plenty of fun themes and symbolisms, like sacrifice, fate, lack of control, love, losing autonomy, etc, all of which can be framed under the impactful history of his Catholic childhood. This evokes the imagery of farm animals, servitude, animal tags/dog tags, holy spaces being used for other purposes. Play with it!

-Build three base playlists! One for your overarching story, one for songs that remind you of the main character and their story arc, and one for how you feel when you’re writing/songs that weirdly remind you of your story. You can cycle through these to help get into your mood.

-Consume other media! If all you do is focus on writing, you WILL lose steam and inspiration. Don’t be afraid to watch new shows, read new books, look at more artwork, read more poems, listen to more music. You might get a flicker of inspiration for themes, motives and ideas, and you’ll continue to fill yourself instead of dumping your focus out on your writing.

-Understand how each major character thinks and instinctively reacts to things. Some characters can stay calm, but others might instinctively react to things ‘angrily’, others might try to run away. This is an easy way to figure out character flaws and impliment easy conflicts.

And last but not least:

-Take breaks! Don’t worry about forcing yourself to keep a posting schedule (unless you’re being paid. I’m not. I’m doing this shit for free and for funsies) if all you do is spend all your time worrying about your writing, you won’t be able to relax your brain. Spend time with friends, play games, go outside!

insecurities are honestly a construct and the dumbest thing society has conditioned us to believe matter because i could literally make this a prompt of random things and it would probably be accurate but anyway! feel free to use <3

A very detailed character biography to help build characters. I found the original template HERE and edited it to make it more suitable for the characters I'm creating, and also to add some more details, such as a mental illness checklist section to use for myself to reference (because it helps to know what's wrong with your characters) and other details. You may not need so many minor details for a character, but you never know if you'll end up needing an explanation for something. Give Your Characters FLAWS

Everyone always talks about this, but a lot of the time I tend to see characters be made out to be "a tad bit of an asshole but still unquestionably good and moral".

Everybody has that one friend or relative who's more than a bit mean, maybe a bit prejudiced, or was a shitty person in the past. These details make a person who they are, and can add much needed dimension and realism to characters, and be the basis for character development or plot points later on.

A character who values appearance, and looks down on others who they don't deem "respectable looking"

A character who is emotionally unavailable, and cannot be convinced to open up

A character who believes that everything is for the greater good, and ends up being very insensitive to people who are hurting

A character who is petty or vengeful, and can't let go of grudges no matter how small they might be

A character who used to be abusive, and while they aren't anymore, they never apologized for it

A character who is prepared to hurt others emotionally or physically if they believe it will be good in the long run

A character who expects others to be just as cold and heartless as they are, and looks down on those who can't put their "weak sentimentalities" aside.

It makes for more compelling narratives as when characters are given parts that are difficult to work with or love, it makes them more interesting to read about, and can introduce cool dynamics or discussions into the story, and can align with the story's themes.

Character personalities for your oc — spring flower edition

Sunflower: cheerful, optimistic, bright and outgoing; with an infectious smile and laughter, you cannot help but be drawn to them no matter how down you feel. A typical sunshine person who sees the best in people and situations, and who makes the best of people and situations. They are true mood lifters and ones who build people up.

Rose: passionate, fiery and bursting with enthusiasm — they are strong defenders of people whom they care about, and of things that matter to them. They are alluring but also very protective of themselves, and need to be around those who treat them with utmost respect and care.

Tulip: they adopt a go-with-the-flow mantra in life, are laid-back and are fairly popular among their social circles; they are able to bloom even in the gloomiest of weathers thanks to their strong sense of self. Constantly exuding happiness and a carefree spirit, many also tend to feel relaxed in their presence.

Daffodil: eccentric and unique, they have rather quirky idiosyncrasies that add to their personal flavour. They radiate joy and have a certain lightness around them. A problem solver and a lover of challenges, they can also be seen as competitive people who love the thrill of success. They prefer to forge their own path in life, and not be pinned down by something or someone.

hi I'm writing a romance story but the thing is whenever I come up with story ideas I end up not knowing how to come up with a character design, do you have any tips that could possibly help?

i feel like once you have the general Idea of how your story is going to go then you can kind of draw the outline for how your characters are going to be acting like so based upon that I would say you let them answer like a few questions about themselves (update: get to know ur character ) that you can find on Pinterest called OC sheet(?) here u go some i found!!

More plans for that Mermaid ISAT Au I was working on! Now I know I should be writing for my other stories, but this silly little plot is taking over my head. I can’t stop thinking about it!

I fell like Bonnie would be the type to imitate everything their sister does and ends up following her to work more often than not. Because of this little habit, Bonnie would sneak onto the merchants ships that Nille works for. Usually, this would end up in a light scolding from their sister, but this time pirates attack the ship and the siblings were separated in the chaos.

Nille pushes Bonnie into one of the last life boats, ending up saving their life at the cost of being separated. She gives Bonnie her hair chain in order for Bonnie to agree to leave in the dingy life boat (Not very stable cause the merchant ship Nille worked for was sketchy ‘hence the pirate attack).

Bonnie would be lost at sea for a while until a mermaid (Siffrin) finds them and brings them back home (unknowing to the mer). They would be found covered in dried bits of seaweed, cuts, and bruises. Bonnie would be unconscious throughout the whole journey to the mainland causing Frin to worry (Bonnie doesn’t end up finding out about Frin’s mermaid-ness until much later in the story).

Siffrin would give them the “sea’s blessing” (A mystery tattoo in the shape of a strange symbol (A star). No one knows where it comes from, but it is said to bring good luck to anyone’s ship if a person with the symbol is present.) on their upper arm. For Siffrin, the symbol is a way for them to see if the random guppy they found is alright and also works as a tracker. He can find Bonnie anywhere they are and would later follow their trail after being worried about them (and maybe also boredom from being kept in the sea for so long/ the need to explore).

Bonnie doesn’t care about the cool new protection they have and only wants to find their sisters which would eventually lead them to Odile’s research boat where the party meets up. They would sneak onto the vessel thinking it was a merchant ship, but ends up convincing Odile to help them anyway.

Isabeau was a guard Odile hired to protect her ship while sea bound and Mira is a researcher who transferred over to Odile’s team from Euphrasie branch, therefore the party meets and the story begins.

None of them realizes what lays in store for them ahead, but relationships and silly confrontations start soon after Siffrin finds his way on board Odile’s ship. Maybe if I ever write more for it we can see where this would lead, lol.

Immoral Characters

This is a question for writers, readers, and enjoyers of really anything(?). How would you go about writing characters that are bad people? I feel like there is a line between a character people can admit are flawed can still love them, and then a character that is flawed but to the point that it's irredeemable? What makes a bad character at the very least likable?

What separates a Fiona Gallagher and an Eleanor Shellstrop from a Frank or pregnant Debbie Gallagher and a demon from hell.

I'm asking becauseI want to write a main character who is flawed and has super flawed motivations, but I don't want to have an Dear Evan Hansen situation where the character is so flawed that part of the audience feels like it ruins the story all together.

Maybe I would say effort? Fiona makes a constant effort to help her family. Eleanor makes an effort to be good. But Evan Hansen made an effort to help Conner's family. It's clear the writers wanted Evan to be relatable and for the audience would attach to him, but that's not what happened. Where did they go wrong?

How do I make my immoral character likeable? Even if they did super horrible, no good things, I still want people to like them and want to follow their story. What do I do?

What are your character’s special little skills? You know, that skill that doesn’t quite make sense for them overall, but still is part of them.

For example, Allistor, my brawling, sword-fighting, zero impulse control MC, carries a sketchbook and enjoys drawing.

On the other hand, Arthur, my quiet, sweet and naive MC, is able to spit far and accurately enough to ring a bell with it.
