so you want mirrored headers/footers with different chapter title pages in Microsoft Word (a guide to save your life)

"Why does unchecking Link to Previous never work?!"

Do not worry. I got your back.

What you have is a document that includes chapter header formatting and a title/intro section which requires separate formatting from the rest of your manuscript.

Let me tell you guys something important.

In Word, chapter header formatting is only for use in the navigation pane and generating the table of contents. Chapter headings have nothing to do with sections.

And to get the sexy formatting you want, you have to use sections.

Double click near top/bottom of page to open the header/footer screen and you will see what I mean.

My chapter titles are covered up by the header/footer box but as you can see, even though there are chapter headings, the section does not change. After the TOC, it's all just "section 2."

To work with sections:

Click on this dude or on Windows press Ctrl+Shift+8.

This will make section breaks appear in your text.

Now that you can see section breaks, you can manually delete them.

In order to add section breaks, go over here:

In Word, there are two main kinds of breaks: page breaks, and section breaks.

A page break comes in a couple of forms (like column breaks and page breaks) and basically has nothing to do with sections! It just shoves text ahead to the next page/column if you'd like it to do so. For example, when most people start a new chapter in a book, there will be a page break so the new chapter starts on the next page.

A section break is what we are after. You can use a next page section or a continuous section, it don't matter. I start my chapters on the next page so I tend to use continuous section break + regular page break to accomplish this.

Ok, now here is what you do.

Right before page 1 of your manuscript starts, make sure there is a section break. (For most people this will be immediately after the table of contents)

Then, add a section break just before each chapter begins.

It's ok to have multiple sections in your front matter. My chapter 1 usually starts in section 5 or 6 somehow. But make sure that each chapter is its own section. Check on this by opening the headers/footers tab and looking to see that the section count progresses with each chapter heading:

(Sometimes when opening header/footer, your text gets smushed and you get a temporary blank page or two until you close headers/footers. That is normal. No worries there.)

Note how every time there is a new section break, the next page begins on a new section.

Now it is time to check those cool boxes to get the fancy formatting started.

Select your Chapter 1 page, or whatever page 1 you have where you want your page count to begin after your introductory materials.

Click these things in the design tab:

Different first page ✅

Different odd and even pages ✅

Please notice what has changed!

The header/footer sections used to just say:

Header -Section 1-

Footer -Section 1-

and so on.

NOW IT SAYS:

First Page Header -Section 1-

First Page Footer -Section 1-

Even Page Header -Section 1-

Even Page Footer -Section 1-

Odd Page Header -Section 1-

Odd Page Footer -Section 1-

(Of course, if your chapters are tiny like in this example, you may not have 3 whole pages per section, but you get the idea).

Now here is the thing.

As far as Microsoft Word is concerned, you now have six (6) unique header/footer categories.

What this means is, If you go to your First Page Header -Section 1- and uncheck "Link to Previous," it will only unlink the header of the first page of the section. It will not unlink the headers of your even pages. It will not unlink the headers of your odd pages. And it will not do a single thing to any footers.

Go through and find the first time each of the six categories appear. Uncheck/deactivate "Link to Previous" for all six categories (first/even/odd headers and footers).

Basically, if the first time you see Odd Page Footer is in chapter 3, then unlink that first instance from the previous section.

You will be able to tell you were successful because the "Same as Previous box will disappear!!

(Oops! I still need to uncheck Link to Previous for my Even Page Footer -Section 2-)

Only do this for the first time you see each type of category (in other words, do not unlink all your sections from each other - just unlink the first time you see that category type).

Now that all 6 of your chapter one header/footers are unlinked, you can add in your header/footer content!

OH NO, I added a page number, and! The page number appeared in my table of contents! :(

If the header/footer content autofills in your front matter, it is because you did not properly unlink that header/footer category. Open header/footer view and look for the box that says "Same as Previous." Make sure that box GOES AWAY for the first instance of each of the 6 categories.

Basically, what we are doing is finding the first time these categories appear in your manuscript, and telling Word, "hey!! This specific little box is the first time in the document you will put a header or footer on any even/odd/first page, and not only that, but every single even/odd/first page after this is going to follow this pattern :)"

Now as you edit your headers/footers, remember:

What you do on even pages will not change odd pages or first pages.

What you do on first pages will not change even or odd pages.

If you want to totally reformat your headers/footers, you must find and edit six total header/footer boxes.

We're almost done! Microsoft Word is dumb in many ways, but in one way it is smart. Go to the first time your automatically generated page number appears in your header/footer.

For me this, is always page 2 because I do not put the page numbers on chapter title pages.

Highlight your page number and go to Page Number > Format Page Number and select "Start at: 1". Even if the first time your page number appears is on page 2, Microsoft Word will begin counting from the start of this section.

And that's all you need to do.

Hey, binding multiple books together in one document and you need to restart at page 1 in the middle? Go to where your next book begins and unlink from previous just like before :)

Wow, look! By adding in appropriate section breaks before each chapter header and unlinking the first instances of all 6 header/footer categories, now my entire manuscript will autofill with my custom mirrored formatting using a unique first page formatting for each chapter break.

And if I want more blank pages without fussing with sections, I can simply use the page break function to increase white space!

🥺 Is there a certain type of moment or common interaction between your characters that never fails to put you in your feels?

I'm always a sucker for when two characters are having a very emotionally charged moment, usually talking about something very heavy, and one reaches out to just gently touch the other. Bonus points if it's the first time that person has had a friendly touch in a while and slumps at the contact.

I want you to know that I agonised over this because I'm super critical of my own stuff. I can't even go back to reread it without wanting to change everything or roll my eyes at something.

I think I'm good at getting the voice of characters right; even if they're saying something that's OOC, I think I can phrase it in such a way or concoct a scenario where it's authentic for them to be saying that particular thing.

🧐 Do you spend much time researching for your stories?

I spend so much time researching my stories! I come from a background in journalism and that's an industry that puts a lot of emphasis on citing sources and having the facts straight, so it's really hard for me to write something that doesn't have even the vaguest basis in fact.

Everything in my fic is somewhat based in reality and I usually try to link whatever research I've done at the end of the chapter. I really like coming up with tricky situations (like the church being awash with blood) and then trying to find ways that could actually happen.

🎨 How do you feel about fan art of your stories?

I've never had fan art of my fics, but I'd love it if it ever happened. I only ever ask that people credit the fic where approrpriate.

🧠 Pick a character, and I'll tell you my favorite headcanon for them.

I don't know if I was meant to pick one or you were, but I'll go with the (fictional) Shane Madej:

He's an exceptionally weird dude. Lots of niche interests and random facts rattling around that big ol' brain of his which he chooses to share in seemingly strange moments. I have this little idea that he endeared himself to Quinta by sharing stories about Ten Cent Beer Night and other historical oddities during tubulant flights to cases.

Everything is really in fragments at the moment as I've had to write most of this chapter either on my phone during bouts of morning sickness or through voice to text lol but here you go:

“Special Agent Madej?” Ray asks, his voice still in the faux friendly tone he uses when he’s waiting for one of his agents to realise they’ve drawn a particularly stupid conclusion – and for one confusing moment Shane thinks Ray knows he’s awake and waiting for a response – but then he adds, “What possible reason could you have for wanting to handcuff a federal agent?”  “Because he is now my main lead on six murders after Ryan Bergara shot through thanks to him being tipped off by your agent,” Cooper growls.  “How,” Ray says, and it’s supposed to be the start of a question, but it comes out with so much force that he gets stuck there for a second. “How did you come to that conclusion?” he finally manages.

There's always someone dealing with loads of anxiety whilst being in deep denial that they need to reach out for support...no idea where that's come from.

My top favorite movies; " Cruella ", " Spirited ", " The Nutcracker & The Four Realms ", " The Greatest Showman ", and literally any Spiderman movie ever (except for " Venom ", the poster was scary enough, I didn’t need *cough*want*cough* to watch it *acts tough, but can't handle horror movies*).

I do not like: The Knuckles Series (It's... distasteful, to say the least), Radiosilence (It's the worst, I hate it with all my heart and soul. Nobody deserves radiosilence, it's torture), fanfictions that include incest (like people shipping Shadow with Maria and/or Sonic with Tails), little kids (I hate little kids, as well as kids who aren't little, they're just so annoying, I can’t stand it. I am so not parent material), the taste of caramel, lip-sticks (how do you people eat and drink with it on???), sunlight (and no, I'm not a vampire, I just don't like it, vitamin D is literally the only thing keeping me from an A+ blood test), and tumblr bots (they're the embodiment of evil) etc.

I'm not exactly new in tumblr but this account is about two years old.

I love STH in any and every way but my favorite is, and will always be, Sonadow.

Which is what this tumblr blog's mostly about.

Oh, man... I've written a lot of things that made me laugh, but one moment that popped into my head when I saw this question was this text exchange between Alex and Pez in Chapter 10 of It's Nice to Have a Friend:

💖 What made you start writing?

lol, I've been writing since I was, like, six years old, I honestly can't remember why I started. probably because my sister was doing it and I thought it was cool 😂 but I started writing fanfic because there were stories that I wanted to see more of with my favorite characters, and I knew that I had the ability to write them myself, so I gave it a shot!

✅ What's something that appears in your fics over and over and over again, even if you don't mean to?

😂 ALL the cuddles! even when I'm trying to make the characters have a serious conversation, they end up cuddling through it. I'm not complaining, to be honest.

🤭 Do you have a favorite tag to use when posting your works?

Hmm... "Hurt/Comfort", probably. (Although some of my latest WIPs are leaning towards "Angst With a Happy Ending", as well... 🤔)

😅 What’s a story or scene you’ve created that you’re a smidge embarrassed exists?

I don’t really like “Sweetpeas and Daffodils”, tbh. I mean, I leave it up but since it was pretty venty I got it out quickly and don’t like it all that much—it’s just kind of boring naval gazing imo 

🥺 Is there a certain type of moment or common interaction between your characters that never fails to put you in your feels?

When you’re not sure if love is enough! When there’s so much love and a desire to make things work, but you just don’t know if you can work though something—Moomintroll and Snufkin wrt Sisu, but also Snufkin and his parents! I just love the tragedy of it. 

On The Other Paw, I also really love when someone can just step in no matter what. More of a personal thing for me, I think, being disabled in a way that is socially viewed as, if not needy, then gross. So moments like when Moomintroll holds Snufkin’s face after Snufkin vomits in “acacia & asphodel” chapter 7 hit in a really personal way for me. 

😈 Has there been a point in a story where you did something just to be playfully mean to your readers? 

Tbh I don’t think so? Closest thing I can think of is ambiguous endings, but I don’t do that playfully, but rather because I just love reading and writing ambiguous endings; I think they’re more interesting. Okay with more reflection, definitely the cliffhanger between the two fics in the Ginger Tea series. Not so much the ambiguity at the ending of the first piece, but playing coy in the comments about what the decision would be even though I knew jfdklsa 

🤡 What’s a line, scene, or exchange you’ve written that made you laugh?

A few! Especially in “chlorine & corticosteroids”, where I had a lot of fun with Lake and Jesse’s banter. But I also do like this exchange in my Owl House beekeeping AU (that I haven’t finished fjdlsa)

“You said this hive’s been here for, what, six weeks?” he asks, after a moment. He has to speak up over the buzzing. 

“Mm-hmm.” She nods, too, even though he’s not looking at her. His peripheral vision can’t be that good in that veil. 

“Yeah, it’s been here way longer than that.” 

“Really? How long?” 

He hums for a moment, peering down into the gutted floor. “Two, three years?” 

“Years?” she repeats, dumbfounded. How could she not have noticed? “How can you tell?” 

Hunter pulls a funny little crowbar out from his pocket. He shrugs. “Lotta bees.”  I also like this unpublished exchange from “acacia & asphodel”, which makes me chuckle: 

Snufkin sets Sisu down on the carpet before unbuttoning his winter coat. He glances over to see Aliisa sitting cross-legged on the couch beside a scraggly cat, a deadpan expression on the witch’s face as she scrolled through… Vine? The one with the videos.

Snufkin opens the coat closet door. Closes it again. Turns to his roommate.

“Why is there a cat.”

“Her name is Talvi,” Aliisa corrects, her tone as if they’ve had this conversation before. “She lives here now.”Snufkin sighs and puts away his coat before bending down to help Sisu out of theirs. He tries to ignore the pain in his fingers “Do you know how expensive it is to own a cat? Especially one off the streets? It’s probably full of worms.”

“You’re full of worms.” 

Snufkin lets that one lie.

Fdsjkfl;sad awwwwww I think I’m good at mood and tension! Creating an atmosphere that fills a scene, yk? Like the second chapter of “acacia & asphodel”, where Snufkin’s taking the pregnancy tests and turning them over one by one. 

I also like the Completely Unnecessary Research I do—mostly I just have fun doing it, but I think extra little details like adding travel times or medicine side effects or regional dress naturally make something more fleshed-out and grounded.  

🛒 What are some common things you incorporate in your fics? Themes, feels, scenes, imagery, etc.

One thing I notice in my writing is that I don’t often use attributive tags, like “he said” or “she yelled”—stuff like that. Usually I instead put an action that character is doing, frequently a fidget, which I try to make different for each character.  Another style thing I notice is a focus on timing developed by punctuation—forcing a little pause with sentence fragments and paragraph breaks. I think that’s a thing coming from how I type casually online, like on discord. 

With themes and imagery and emotions and such, I think I put a lot of emphasis on unsaid things—unsaid by prose or by characters. Like, trying to make this atmosphere of “elephant in the room”. What is the thing that so obviously needs to be said butcannot. Obviously, that complements Snufkin’s character very well when I write him, but I also have that a bit in my Infinity Train writing, like when Jesse is shaving Lake’s hair, and there’s thisshift in the relationship between them, where they’re becoming closer but neither are really going to acknowledge the intimacy of the act, and instead showing the lasting impact of it (and also Lake’s influence on Jesse in general) by mentioning little bits of Lake’s hair clinging to him on the bus ride home. It’s about Symbolism. It’s about Implications. 

🎢 Which of your fics would you call your wildest ride?

I’m not sure! I don’t really think I’ve written any? I don’t know, I feel like all my stuff was pretty predictable, but maybe that’s just cause I know what’s gonna happen in them.       But if I’m picking one, probably Black Cohosh? Just because it has a few pretty dramatic plot points, and its subject matter isn’t something that’s very popular in the fandom, so it might be a little more surprising for a reader. 

But also I think the experience of reading Ginger Tea when it was coming out was probably a bit of a ride, not knowing that Snufkin would do. 

⛔ Do you have a fic you started, but scrapped?

I wouldn’t really say “scrapped”, but I definitely have different things I’ve put on the back burner for even a few years, including one where Moominpappa builds a ramp up to Moominhouse, which I do like but just sdfjkl Haven’t finished it. ForIvy Garlands, though, I have a few paragraphs because it was originally just going to be their first birthday in Moomin Valley: 

It was everything Sisu deserved. 

And nothing he could provide. 

 Snufkin remembered Sisu’s second birthday, spent traveling back to Moominvalley, stowing away on a cargo ship from Gda?sk to Helsinki, covering his kit’s mouth to hide their cries while Soviet officers examined the ship from stem to stern for contraband and stowaways. 

He remembered their first birthday, when Snufkin hadn’t eaten in at least two days. The winter freeze hung long and firm, and he could only gather enough for Sisu. They screamed and screamed, garnering the attention of the fillyjonk bakery owners who turned their noses up at the scrappy mumrikar tramp with the bastard infant. A younger fillyjonk had snuck into the woods several hours later, finding the father and child fishing on the lake. She had brought them a handful of ptasie mleczko—which quickly because Sisu’s favorite sweet—and apologized for her aunt’s behavior before slipping away once more.  

He remembered seeing Sisu for the first time, loving them in an automatic, hollow way; cradling them in his paws like they could break. He remembered their cries, the pain, the blood, the darkness. He remembered the kind moomins of Zalipie bathing him and feeding him when he didn’t have the energy or will to do so himself. Snufkin remembered the disinterest, the distance, the resentment he felt for the little creature with which he shared blood. Over the years, his love for them filled out and developed, overflowing his heart—his entire body; it pushed out the resentment. Almost all of it.

✅ What’s something that appears in your fics over and over and over again, even if you don’t mean to?

Special interests ! I’m always putting in medical stuff or dress history or beekeeping in there even when it doesn’t have a reason jfkdals I just Have to get it in there. 

Also, difficult parental relationships, I’m noticing! Snufkin with his parents, who he feels neglected and abandoned by; Moomintroll’s parents, who he feels don’t take him seriously; Tulip and Lake’s parents in “c&c”, who’ve done a poor job of keeping their children out of their divorce. I think people tend to depict parents as either all good or all evil, but much more realistic and interesting is when parents are people who just can have difficult times and screw up, and that a parent/child relationship is like any other: something that has ups and downs, takes work, and is a two-way street (which is complicated by the power dynamic in a really interesting way). 

💔 Is there a fic of yours that broke your heart?

“Yellow Rainflower”, I think! It’s just really hard to see such a big fallout between Snufkin and Moomintroll. Every time I was writing a fight scene between them, I’d reach a point where I could start to wrap it up Or escalate it further, and I just kept escalating it. Not even really as an active decision—it just kept Coming Out jfdskla

🧐Do you spend much time researching for your stories?

I spend way, way too much time. It's always stupid things, too! That I really don't need to go down rabbit holes for, but it's gotta be done!! For cetbwa, off the top of my head: I researched the average snowfall in New Jersey and when it's most likely to snow, just a whole lot about stars and NASA (which makes my silly gravity fact fuck up so much more painful for me), and lately I've been watching so many videos on suturing - like to the point where I feel pretty confident I could stitch someone up pretty well. Oh, and autopsies.

🦅Do you outline fics or fly by the seat of your pants?

Uh... both? I tried to be really good and outline cetbwa, but I absolutely veered off course and added six new chapters which then made me throw out the whole plan. For the one other multichapter fic I'm working on, that has a pretty rigid plan so far... so we'll see how that one turns out 😅

Oooooh, I don't know? I'm sure there probably is something, but I've not written enough to draw a straight line... maybe it's that I tend to make all my characters lowkey desperate and touch-starved and probably more than a little ooc lmao
