Three years ago, on June 4, Chantel Moore, a Tla-o-qui-aht/Nuu-chah-nulth woman, was shot five times by an Edmundston, New Brunswick, police officer during a wellness check.
The reverberations of her death are still being felt loud and clear today.
Five months later, Chantel’s mother Martha Martin was forced to endure another loss, as her son Mike Martin died in a B.C. correctional centre. Another failure of the justice system. Another tragedy for Martha to endure.
On Saturday, Martha Martin held a sacred ceremony to release the ashes of Chantel and Mike into the Somass River in Port Alberni, a favourite place of both siblings. [...]

So I was thinking about this post, and this person is so right. In Canada there’s this smug air of superiority, even in school it’s there, that we’re better/more advanced and socially progressive than the US. Which is complete and utter bullshit. This is going to get long, so strap in I guess. The last residential school closed in 1996. That was 27 years and 4 months ago. Younger than my sister. As of May 21, there have been 35 short-term drinking water advisories placed in First Nations communities, and that’s excluding those in the British Columbia region. 63% of Indigenous women have experienced sexual assault in their lifetime and red dress day isnt just for fun, missing and murdered indigenous women is a huge and ongoing issue that many people I’ve encountered scoff at. Because fundamentally, to many non-indigenous and Métis people I’ve encountered, it just doesn’t matter to them. And that’s a really big problem with Canada, we keep our evil under the rug and put on an air of superiority to keep the act together.
Police killed 69 people in 2022, the highest death toll in a single year to occur in Canada due to police brutality. And there’s been a 66.5% increase in deaths associated with police use of force from 2011 to 2022, with, you guessed it, a large percent of that statistic being black and indigenous people, despite only making up around 8.7% of the population (in 2022). It should also be noted that if you google police brutality in Canada, the first two results are on the rise in police brutality, the third is a CNN article on how Black Canadians have been battling systematic racism and police brutality for centuries. Which paints a pretty accurate picture of our lovely police force. But really, let’s talk about Chantel Moore as an example. In 2020, Chantel Moore was shot multiple times by an RCMP officer who had been called to her home for a wellness check, subsequently dying. Jeremy Son, the RCMP officer claimed that it was Moores own fault as she had been walking towards him holding a knife. According to the coroner, she had been shot twice in the chest, once in her abdomen and once in her left leg. Just to remind you, for allegedly walking towards the officer while holding a knife. It was also testified by a toxicologist that she would have been showing no serious signs of intoxication when this happened. And this might be the most important fact of all, and ties into the above issue of missing and murdered indigenous women, Moores ex-boyfriend called the wellness check for her because he had been receiving text messages by someone who seemed to be stalking Moore, the RCMP officer tapped on her window to wake her, because, according to him, she had been asleep on the couch, and that’s when she grabbed the knife and walked out onto her balcony, according to Sons testimony, she didn’t drop the knife when asked and he then shot her 4 times in rapid succession. Honestly discrimination against any non-white person in Canada is strong, my clearly indigenous mother gets followed by security guards in local grocery stores as if she’s a threat, even though she has done absolutely nothing to give anyone that impression except dare to have darker skin. The amount of people I’ve heard talk about how residential schools were actually good for the indigenous people because they “kept them from becoming drunks” is sickening and despite being hailed as a “diverse, multicultural, and inclusive nation” we have a long history of discrimination, especially towards Chinese Canadians, who, in a 2021 census, were found to be one of the largest ethnic groups in Canada, and millions of essays and articles and what have you’s could be written on the shit our Government has put them through. And discrimination against Arabic people is no joke in Canada, a 2021 survey found that Canadians are 10% more likely to claim that there are too many Arabic immigrants entering the country compared to immigrants in general.
All this to say, our political system was made by Colonizers and is deeply flawed, feeding a culture of hate towards anyone labeled “other”, this system relies on ignorance and secrecy, presenting itself as a good, positive and progressive force, and while I will admit that our charter is decent, we still aren’t superior and we never will be. Instead of harbouring pride for an event that happened over a century ago, let’s turn our eyes on parliament hill, and strike a match. Anyways this was a super quick skim over the surface of the fucked upness of Canada and I left a lot out, if anyone sees any misinformation, etc pls let me know! My sources are listed below.

NOVA - the enlivening
Tumblr media
Raine stirred slightly, engulfed in her Egyptian cottoned white blanket on her extra wide bed. She reached to the other side of her bed only to find it empty and cold like before. Raine blinked sleep out of her eyes as she realized her predicament. She was all alone — and what's worse... Nova was gone.
Raine sat upright in her bed and threw her face into her hands.
"God, I'm so stupid!" She exclaimed to herself. After a few minutes of attempting to compose herself, Raine got out of bed and began making it.
Back to business as usual. She thought, fluffing the final pillow in her set. Just then, a note on her nightstand caught her eye. With wide, hopeful eyes, she lunged for it and began reading.
Tumblr media
Raine sat on the edge of her bed holding the note to her chest. There were a lot of emotions rushing through her at once. Some were strong and definite and the others, she couldn't quite gauge. One thing was for sure, though... Nova had completely changed Raine's life. She knew that she’d never be able to carry on without her and she was perfectly ok with that.
________________________________________________
Raine had it bad. Every time she heard the front door's bell, she rushed into view of it to see if it were Nova. But it never was and that royally fucked her up.
"Welcome to The Ridge." She would greet the strangers in monotone with zero percent of enthusiasm. This was unlike Raine. Before yesterday, she was the most energetic, upbeat person that Mr. And Mrs. Ridgemore has ever placed upon their payroll. They were damn proud of it, too, as they named her employee of the month for eight months in a row.
"What's going on with you today, Rai?" Raine's co-worker and good friend, Chantel Moore nudged her gently in the side, halfway snapping Raine out of her funk.
"I just... got a lot on my mind." Raine mumbled, busying herself by refolding the same display of polo shirts for the third time today.
"I see that. You've been folding these shirts for half an hour now." Chantel joked. "Tell me what's going on."
"Okay, but you have to promise not to judge me." Raine turned to her friend with pleading eyes.
"I promise I won't judge you. I'm here to support you." She placed her right hand over her heart and lifted her left hand up to the gods as a symbol of trust and truth.
"So, last night, while I'm cleaning and getting ready to head out, I hear someone enter the shop and immediately I'm like shit, I didn't lock the door. I walk up and, I shit you not, the most..." Raine sighed with heavy adoration, "gorgeous being I have ever seen is standing within 15 feet of me."
"So, naturally, you froze." Chantel chimed in.
"I froze, Chantel. She was so tall and beautiful and intimidating!"
"And that turned you on."
"Ugh! You cannot begin to comprehend how turned on I was! And I felt so wrong about it because I didn't know this woman and I was already feeling all of these— things."
"Naughty things?" Chantel cocked a playful eyebrow and leaned closer, invested.
"We went to Luigi's and had an absolute blast! But then, we went back to my place..." Raine trailed off, looking at Chantel expectantly. Immediately, Chantel's jaw dropped, her mouth forming into a smile.
"You didn't!" She hit Raine gently on the arm.
"It was the most amazing night ever. Nothing I have ever experienced can compare to the way she made me feel."
"Ohhh! So that's why you've been pouting at the door every time it opened! You've got the fever!" Chantel teased.
"Oh, come on, I do not have the fever." Raine lied. She knew she had it and she had it bad. She needed more of Nova.
More of her touch.
More of her kiss.
More of her everything.
Raine was obsessed with the sublime magical beast she had only met less than twenty-four hours ago. She craved more.
_________________________________________________
Later that night, when Chantel and her other coworkers went home and the store was now closed, there Raine remained with the front door unlocked hoping that she'd walk through it once again.
It was now fifteen minutes past 9, an hour fifteen past closing, and Raine was just about ready to call it quits. With a heavy, disappointed sigh, Raine cut off the lights and made for the exit. Then is when it happened... the door swung open. Raine's heart picked up speed, for the door seemed have been swinging in slow motion. The world around her warped to a blurring halt as the person opening the door came into view.
"Hello, my love." Nova grinned. "Have you missed me?"
There she was. Her hopes, her anticipation, her super Nova— In the flesh.

In a statement of defence filed in French, Const. Jeremy Son says 26-year-old Chantel Moore caused her own death by walking toward a police officer, brandishing a knife and by not listening to his instructions to drop the knife.
Son and the City of Edmundston are subjects of a civil suit by Moore’s family, including her mother Martha Martin and Moore’s daughter, Gracie.
“Fearing for his life, defendant Son discharged his firearm four times in the direction of Chantel Moore, until the threat was eliminated,” the filing said, translated to English.
The suit, which has not been tested in a court of law, was filed in May 2022, and alleges negligence on the part of Son and the City of Edmundston, and that Son “demonstrated significant errors in judgment leading to Moore’s death.” [...]

Quote
Over the past two weeks, thousands of Canadians have marched in mostly peaceful protests held in cities across the country for the Black Lives Matter movement. While the protests may have been sparked by the death of George Floyd in the US, the Canadians marching have been clear to say that systemic racism is not just an American problem. In addition to Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation Chief Allan Adam's arrest, the recent deaths in police custody of Regis Korchinski-Paquet, a black woman in Toronto, and Chantel Moore, an indigenous woman in New Brunswick, have become touchstones in the wider discussion about race and policing in Canada, which has included calls to defund police.
