Pubblicato in occasione della mostra milanese in collaborazione con il FAI – Fondo Ambiente Italiano e la Fondazione Cologni dei Mestieri d’Arte, il volume illustra la storia della moda e dello stile attraverso una selezione di abiti realizzati interamente in carta con l’inconfondibile talento creativo dell’artista Isabelle de Borchgrave: un originale excursus che parte da un sontuoso abito di corte di Elisabetta I per arrivare agli eleganti vestiti da ballo di Worth, agli abiti in stile orientale delle sorelle Callot fino alle inconfondibili creazioni di Coco Chanel e ai tailleur di Dior.

Non solo vestiti, ma anche scarpe e accessori che ci mostrano come da un materiale così semplice possa uscire una tale opera d’arte: “Si parte sempre da un foglio di carta – dice Isabelle de Borchgrave – ma poi la pittura, le mani, l’acqua, la straordinaria padronanza e la fantasia nell’uso dei materiali riescono a produrre effetti di velluto e di seta, spessori e morbidezze alla vista e al tatto, lucentezze d’oro e di perle e impalpabili preziosi merletti che ricordano la perfezione dei maestri fiamminghi”. Moda di carta presenta le riproduzioni delle più grandi marche, dal classico tailleur di Dior agli abiti da sera di Lanvin e Poiret, ai tradizionali capi di Chanel, oltre alle minuziose riproduzioni di abiti-icona che hanno rivoluzionato il nostro modo di vestire come l’abito Delphos, disegnato da Mariano Fortuny ispirato dalle tuniche delle sculture greche che rappresenta una radicale innovazione nell’abbigliamento femminile, poiché confortevole, privo di busto, e di facile realizzazione.

Baron George Hoyningen-Huene (1900–1968), known simply as Huene, worked during the golden age of couture fashion and Hollywood cinema. He was born in St Petersburg to a wealthy family, but they had to flee their home during the Russian revolution in 1917. Huene spent time in England before moving to Paris, where he was employed to create photographs for Vogue and Vanity Fair and rapidly established himself as a visual innovator, fusing elements of neoclassicism and surrealism to create chic, arresting images. In 1935, Huene joined Harper’s Bazaar magazine, where he remained a contributor until 1946, following which he settled in California and embarked on a second career as a colour coordinator for Hollywood films.

Supported by an international exhibition opening at Chanel Nexus Hall in Tokyo, this book combines elegant design and production values with rigorous new research and scholarship. Organized into eight chapters, each supported by texts by contributing writers from the worlds of fashion, cinema and photography, and featuring names and faces that have defined our view of style, glamour and grace in the 20th century, it reminds us of Huene’s position among the greats of photography.

the met really should do more international/ cultural fashion exhibits. When I went in October there was a fantastic exhibit of kimonos in the Far East wing. It’d be much more interesting than just reliving the past 30 years over and over

Chanel designed first and foremost for herself; by creating clothes fit for an independent and active lifestyle, she anticipated the needs and wants of the modern woman. This beautiful book showcases a stunning array of Chanel’s most notable designs from her 60 years in fashion, largely drawn from the collections of the Patrimoine de CHANEL, Paris, and the V&A. It examines the cut, construction, embellishment, and provenance of the ensembles, as well as the design themes and motifs Chanel returned to throughout her career.
