Rookie-Critic's Film Review Weekend Wrap-Up - Week of 5/1-5/7/2023
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Somewhere in Queens (2023, dir. Ray Romano) This was way better than it had any right to be. I'm not sure what I was expecting from a Ray Romano-directed picture, but for some reason it wasn't this. Just an unendingly sweet little slice-of-life film that analyzes the dynamics of a very messy, but loving family. Romano, who also stars in the film as the lead, plays Leonard, a man who's always late, generally says the wrong thing most of the time, and is just kind of awkward, but he loves his son Sticks (yes, that's a nickname), and he supports him with everything he's got, to a degree of fault, really. Romano isn't afraid to push his characters' faults into the spotlight, and he never tries to excuse them, but he also never loses sight of the fact their hearts are always in the right place. Laurie Metcalf also stuns as Leonard's wife Angela, a cancer survivor and a mother who's jealous of her son's secret girlfriend. The movie is basically a 1 hour and 46 minute, R-rated episode of Everybody Loves Raymond, but honestly I'm not complaining. The format difference allows Romano to explore his characters with a little more depth than a 22-24 minute TV episode would have allowed, and it breaths life into everyone on screen. I was super impressed with Somewhere in Queens, and I actually find myself looking forward to whatever Ray Romano decides to direct next, which is not a sentence I ever thought I'd hear myself say.
Score: 9/10
Currently only in theaters.
Police Story 3: Supercop (1992, dir. Stanley Tong) I have always been a fan of Jackie Chan, having grown up in his heyday in the States, but my fondness for the actor has never extended past his popular American films like the Rush Hour or Shanghai Noon/Knights series of films. I've always known about to slew of Hong Kong action comedies he starred in prior to breaking out over here, but I've just never made the time to watch them. So, I was more than happy to oblige when my older brother wanted to come over to my place and do a double-feature night with this and Drunken Master II (or Legend of the Drunken Master, depending on who you ask). This also doubles as one of Michelle Yeoh's earliest starring roles in a film, so I was doubly interested in watching this. Needless to say it is amazing. The story is decent enough, a police detective (Chan's Ka Kui Chan) is tasked with traveling to mainland China and pairing up with an Interpol agent (Yeoh's Chien Hua Yang) to take down a drug kingpin. Sounds pretty basic, and the nature of the story allows for a lot of Jackie Chan-style hijinks to ensue, but the real meat of what makes Supercop so incredible are the stunts. The things that Jackie Chan does in this movie make Tom Cruise look like a toddler playing in a sandbox. One stunt in particular was so unreal we thought there was no way he was doing it without a harness (turns out he absolutely was doing it without a harness). I won't spoil any of it for you (even though I'm the one who's late to the party here) because, if you haven't seen this, you must. It is one of the most incredible stunt spectacles I've ever seen put to film, and hands down the most impressed I've ever been with a Jackie Chan film, and that was already a pretty high bar.
Score: 9/10
Currently streaming on The Criterion Channel.
Drunken Master II (1994, dir. Lau Kar-leung) I've always heard that this is one of the, if not the, best Jackie Chan movies there is, and it's easy to see why that's the consensus. The hand-to-hand fighting choreography is, without question, the best I've ever seen. The final fight sequence (or series of fight sequences) alone, which takes up the last 20 minutes of the film's runtime, is an absolute wonder to behold. There were things I was seeing in this film that I didn't think was possible to do with the human body that put my jaw firmly on the ground. However, the film as a whole definitely has its weak moments and parts that drag, and a surprising amount of melodrama that I was probably being played for laughs, but it just wasn't landing with me. Which isn't to say that the film isn't funny, most of the physical comedy bits land, which isn't uncommon for a Jackie Chan vehicle, there were just a handful of moments that felt like they were trying too hard. Overall it's just a more uneven viewing experience than Supercop was, but its strengths more than make up for any of the film's detriments.
Score: 7/10
Currently available to rent/purchase on digital (iTunes, Amazon, Vudu, etc.) and on Blu-ray & DVD through Warner Bros.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023, dir. James Gunn) I won't belabor the point on this one too much as my full review was posted literally yesterday, but I was left deeply emotionally affected by this by the time the credits ran. I thought that almost everything about it just worked, barring an under-use of the Adam Warlock character, and the decision to make Rocket the focal point of this film's story was a stroke of genius on the part of writer/director James Gunn. Maybe I'm the lone wolf on how much I loved this because of my bias towards these characters, but I think Gunn knocked it straight out of the park and into the next galaxy with this. It's a wonderful film about finding the strength in your flaws and imperfections and the power of moving forward.
Score: 9/10
Only in theaters. You can read my full review of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 here.
Carmen (2023, dir. Benjamin Millepied) By all accounts, this is not my kind of movie in the slightest. I've heard of the opera, but other than that I couldn't tell you one thing about the story before a few hours ago (I got home from the theater about 4 hours prior to writing this). The story is pretty basic and it definitely takes a "style over substance" approach to its visual storytelling, both things I tend to not be a fan of, but against all odds I have to say I did enjoy my time with Carmen. For one, I love both Melissa Barrera and Paul Mescal and they both kill it in their respective roles, even if I thought their romance moved way too fast to be truly believable. The dance numbers, while sometimes hard to follow the symbolism of, were wonderful. I was impressed with both Barrera's dance ability and voice, and Mescal, for what little dancing he does in the film, is better than you would think he would be. Where I think the film fails is in its message. It does seem like it touches on a lot of things that could have been really interesting (the central romance is between a white "all-American" veteran who clearly, regardless of his own beliefs, comes from a background of racism towards Hispanic people, and an undocumented immigrant), but it never really goes beneath the surface of any of its themes. There are also a handful of loose ploit threads that just kind of irked me. In a movie filled to the brim with extended interpretive dance numbers, they could have devoted at least a few seconds to throwaway line explaining some things and providing a little more context to Carmen's situation. It just seemed like there was a large section of the story that we just didn't get to see and, frankly, it felt like the filmmakers forgot about it, as well. Taking all of that into account, though, I still was drawn into the world of Carmen. I can't fully explain why I think that is, but something about it just grabbed me. I'm not sure I could tell you the greater purpose of everything Carmen throws at you in its 2 hour stay onscreen, but I can tell you that I was mesmerized by most of it, and that's gotta count for something.
Score: 7/10
Currently only in theaters.

Why Do People Like Jackie Chan Movies?
During the quarantine era of the pandemic, I asked myself a question while preparing some patties to toss into the oven like it’s a game of hot potato: What makes people want to watch Jackie Chan movies?
I don’t just mean his American filmography (Rush Hour, Shanghai Noon). or even just his Police Story and Armor of God stuff. I mean what inspires that compulsive need in devoted fans to retroactively tune into what he was up to no matter what. I was certainly one of those fans back when I decided to engage with Martial Arts Cinema with my newly christened adult brain. There’s so much to be said about it as a spectacle. The operatic traditions and postmodern developments in style and substance, I was hooked on that rhythm.
That’s not what I’m talking about here. Of course people would enjoy that, his style of choreography and stunt work are marvels of modern martial arts filmmaking. What he did, he did with flair. I’m talking specifically about the emotional appeal of tuning in. Something I didn't have words until that 10 minute stretch I was staring meaningfully at broccoli.
So I offer you an informal breakdown under the cut of what emotional quality people find worth watching in his films
I started with I thinking about the interviews of his that I’ve watched over the years. This led me to remembering the amount of times he’s described the experiences that made him cry, something that I know showed up when I read his autobiography a while back. I found it so odd that he would be so candid about it, because men aren’t that open about what makes them cry. It’s always something so profound and agonizing that it moves them to tears. Or at least that tends to be the Western construction of masculinity and the relationship between emotional displays.
However, as a general assumption, men are very rarely afforded the sincere opportunity to cry over hurt feelings. Cis men are socialized to limit their displays of emotion outside of the acceptable anger. When the acceptable tears come, it can be to manipulate the situation. Not Jackie though. For example, he described what press tours were like when he first tried to break into the American market. They would often have him do tricks for the audience and treat him like a performing monkey as an Asian man. The central theme of each story ‘it hurt my feelings, so I cried about it’.
Then it came to me! That’s precisely what happens in his movies. For example. In Police Story 2, there is a scene where his character Chan Ka-Kui and his girlfriend May are kidnapped and get mini-explosives thrown at them. The bad guys take his wallet and read his girlfriend’s break up letter to him, which is really emotional for both of them because he hadn’t read it yet. They proceed to mock the two of them before noticing that May’s crying and then they look and note “So’s he.”, as it cuts to his tear stained face.
Then we have Drunken Master II, where his character Wong Fei Hung is beaten and humiliated by the gang of colonialist sympathizers who didn’t take well to him beating them earlier, he returns home crying in shame, where he is taken back by his father.
A more physical example can be seen in the Rush Hour movies, at the center of which is his trademark style of getting hurt or embarrassed for the gag. The humiliation is often slapstick, yes, but it sells the weight that goes into the scene.
Rumble in The Bronx, he’s chased down and jumped in the alley with a brutal sequence of shattered glass, he runs away when the gang tries to initiate another encounter until his friend’s store is trashed. He is hurt and exasperated. It never takes much to make him cry in these things, and the drama is straightforward. It’s not a joke, that aftermath. What’s happening is affecting him deeply.
So back to the question at hand, what is the appeal? The answer is this: his willingness to be vulnerable. The JC main character model is this: He is not only willing to get the shit beat out of him, but in a way that reflects badly on his character. It’s not some huge unstoppable bad guy that takes him down, it’s a normal guy like him, or like 8 normal guys with beer bottles and bats. He gets caught slipping and it speaks to I think, a human need to empathize with someone’s pain. It hurts, we can see that it hurts him and we feel that knee jerk reaction at being caught when he’s not at his peak. Here he is, a decent guy getting the stuffing beaten out of him and feeling really, really bad about it! He’s down and out on himself, sometimes with tears. It genuinely happens to the best of us!
Life is the bat, and we are Jackie Chan. Getting absolutely fucked up, but choosing to gather what’s left of our pride and hobble into the next day. It’s endearingly human and a quality like that can sometimes make you forgive some of the elements missing in the plot. Combine that with a fight rhythm that feels like dancing, and you kind of feel like you’re part of the ride, or you could be. You can be human and do some really cool stuff. And for all your talents, you too can be caught off guard by circumstance and given the ass beating of your life. That’s way more important than being some military machine or police juggernaut who kicks ass and takes names without a scratch to show for it. It’s a little more real than an everyman who has the right words for a situation where he’s pinwheeling from fight to fight. There are no right words for this, just carrying on. It’s a sincere vehicle to express him as an artist, one that is definitely informed by his life’s story, because it’s no secret that nearly every main character is just a fictional expy of Jackie himself.
Also, he dresses like every butch lesbian I know and kicks really high so that alone just makes him neat in my book.

Supercop (1992)
Tumblr media
Let me preface this review by saying that we’re talking about the U.S. version of the film, which runs 4 minutes shorter than the original version. Since the film is known here simply as Supercop I was also unaware that it is the third in a series. Does it matter? Maybe, but the film stands on its own and delivers plenty of laughs along with the incredible stunts and action.
To infiltrate the criminal organization of drug lord Chaibat (Kenneth Tsang), Interpol requests Hong Kong’s “supercop”: “Kevin” Chan Ka-Kui (Jackie Chan). To infiltrate Chaibat's operation, Ka-Kui and Inspector Jessica Yang (Michelle Yeoh), helps one of Chaibat’s key henchmen (Panther, played by Yuen Wah) escape from prison.
When you pick up a Jackie Chan film, what you care about first and foremost are the stunts. The man’s a charismatic actor but no matter how much work is poured into the story or characters, they’re all secondary to kicks, punches and acrobatics. It’s surprising then, that Supercop features a robust story. It’s nothing deep, but we often see excuses to move us from one battle to the next disguised as plots. Not here. There is tension, twists and plenty of intrigue as Ka-Kui and Jessica infiltrate Chaibat’s organization, which helps their cause but also puts them in increasingly serious danger. Their undercover mission also makes for some good laughs, particularly in a scene where Ka-Kui’s girlfriend, May (Maggie Cheung), suspects he is having an affair. It’s goofy stuff and has you chuckling until the criminal business comes back and shifts the genre again. Good stuff.
The stunts featured here are on a level you’re not used to seeing. In Yeoh, Chan has met his match and it looks like they're obsessed with one-upping each other as we draw closer and closer to the film’s big climax: a spectacular finale that’s a must for any fan of action films. Not only does Yeoh play a wonderful straight woman to Chan’s perpetually befuddled and bumbling role, she’s more than capable of keeping up with him physically. The real winners in this competition is us.
You’ll want to stick around for the end credits of Supercop to see several bloopers that prove just how arduous (and impressive) the chases, kicks, punches and jumps truly are. The comedy is effective, the characters likable and the plot engaging. Even the dubbing is quite good. It’s one to seek out. (On VHS, April 14, 2018)

The #DailyDetective for 20 June 2021 was Jackie Chan in Police Story and Police Story 2.
In the 1980s there was no Buster Keaton, Fred Astaire or Harold Lloyd, and Gene Kelly was either trapped in Xanadu or lost at sea on The Love Boat. But we did have Jackie Chan, the true heir to their antic, elastic and kinetically poetic cinematic genius.
Not only are Chan's Police Story action sequences amazing feats of imagination, choreography and performance, they're superbly filmed and edited. He's the consummate action filmmaker.
The Police Story movies have simple plots but they set up a dynamic that infuses every element of the films: Chan's character, Kevin Chan or Chan Ka-Kui, isn't cocky or invulnerable but he won't ever give up. He is always looking for a way to stay in the fight.

ENGLISH
CHORUS Let's get it on You're looking down, aren't you? Well, things like this can be good too, sometimes. Let's get it on. The key to happiness. So that we won't lose sight of it, the love before our eyes.
HIFUMI Opening the curtains, I see the dazzling sun! All gloomy feelings gone with yesterday! Tension UP, like a champagne night! Hey, Doppo, wake up already!
DOPPO I'm sorry...I'm sorry…Ah! A dream?
HIFUMI We're all going fishing today, remember?
DOPPO (That's right!) Catching the last train's every office worker's fate. But somehow, I managed to get a day off this time. Out of the black office and into the blue sea!
HIFUMI A free and fun team’s the best!
HIFUMI/DOPPO Matenrou, even when we're relaxing, we won't lose! Exciting surprises lie in store! Causing chaos wherever they go, it's Gigolo and Doppo's day off! If we're going fishing, we'd better catch a big one!
HIFUMI And while we're talking, our ride's already here!
JAKURAI Good morning! Right on time, I see. Now, both of you, let us be off. Working too much only brings fatigue. Taking breaks is important as well. Oh? Are you still tired, Doppo-kun? On the other hand, you seem to be in high spirits, Hifumi-kun. A special day like this calls for a drink, no? I'll leave the drive back home to you two. [s c r e a m i n g  b u t  t r a n s l a t e d]
CHORUS Let's get it on You're looking down, aren't you? Well, things like this can be good too, sometimes. Let's get it on. The key to happiness. So that we won't lose sight of it, the love before our eyes.
DOPPO The minute we exit the tunnel,
HIFUMI it's a place we've never seen before!
DOPPO In other words, it's paradise! All of us roughing i- Wait, why're you wearing your suit?
HIFUMI (My apologies for keeping you waiting) The little kittens are all avoiding me. Diving right into their midst, I swipe my phone screen!
JAKURAI A suit jacket over swimming trunks. That's quite a bold set. Clearly, this isn't sane. How very intriguing. The waves are teeming with fish, and whether we reel in anything or not depends on how well we work together. Let us leave it to our comrades and fate.
DOPPO (Don't tell me Hifumi's idea of fishing is…) I prefer fish over anything else! It's completely pointless unless we catch salmon, at least,  and jellyfish! We're not giving up till we get them!
MATENROU We Shinjuku's division dedicate even our leisure days to the VISION we've painted for the future.
HIFUMI Today is the first day of the rest of your life. Your last scene mustn't be filled with regrets. Slam on the brakes till they break.
JAKURAI Everyone has something they must accomplish.
DOPPO It'd be great if every day were like this. That's why we join words together, from rhyme to rhyme.
JAKURAI The meaning of life, and all living beings in this world,  for their sakes, we must strive on.
CHORUS Let's get it on You're looking down, aren't you? Well, things like this can be good too, sometimes. Let's get it on. The key to happiness. So that we won't lose sight of it, the love before our eyes.
JAKURAI Did you enjoy our fishing trip together?
HIFUMI It was super fun!
DOPPO  I didn’t know fishing could be this fun! But I guess it's back to work tomorrow…
JAKURAI Let's all go fishing again some time.
HIFUMI That's right, Doppochin!
DOPPO A-alright!
JAKURAI The three of us make a good team, don't we?
