Cornwall’s Random Card of the Day #186: Champion of Lambholt
Tumblr media
Champion of Lambholt is a rare from Avacyn Restored.
So, Avacyn Restored was the end of the original Innistrad block, though it was drafted seperate. The storyline was that after humanity’s darkest hour, the Hellvault was opened, and out came Avacyn and all her angelic host. So it was officially time to kick monster ass!
Remember when I said that in Dark Ascension, there were things like all 4 colour pairs getting a monster lord except g/w with humans (humans being the greatest monster of all, of course)? Well, Avacyn Restored gave a bunch of cool humans doing cool human things (mostly overrunning the enemy with sheer numbers, cause g/w) and this is one of them. Champion of Lambholt doesn’t have to be in a human deck necessarily, but it does well in g/w decks with lots of creatures, and quickly turns your creatures into unblockable game-enders.

Legendary Commentary: Shadows Over Innistrad
Surprise! The best way to follow up Innistrad’s legendaries is with more Innistrad legendaries. I was incredibly hype to return to Innistrad and the fusion of Lovecraftian flavor was absolutely the best way to do it. I also loved Investigate and I’m hoping for a return to that mechanic in the new commanders to come.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
AVACYN’S GONE MAD!
This is absolutely one of my favorite cards this set. A commander with Flash can be so incredibly potent and being an ETB you can flicker post transformation to re-indestructible your field. Evoke creatures like Ingot Chewer are great for forcing the flip. Damage redirectors and doublers can do work in this deck too, Stuffy Doll and Coalhauler Swine can be bonkers powerful. With Furnace of Wrath out your opponent takes 6 from the flip then Coalhauler deals another 12.
Tumblr media
New Odric puts a fun ability on a legendary. Auras, equipment that grant kewords become anthems. This legendary works exceedingly well in decks with other gods like the Amonkhet gods. Oketra and Odric give their field double strike indestructible.
Tumblr media
New Olivia puts much more emphasis on bolstering your own fields over stealing from others. The cost is fantastic and with rakdos vampires having Madness this set you can set off a chain of Madness casts that all have haste and a counter. Like a juiced Unleash. Vampires but with accelerated self discard. Great for reanimator too.
Tumblr media
New Sigarda also is an inverse in design choices from Olivia. Things BUT Sigarda have Hexproof. Selesnya human tribal has a good deal of support since Humans are generally in sets and get good abilities. Being able to mulch your graveyard for tokens is great with Lambholt Champion type creatures too. Put that Evolving Wilds to greater use. She can also curve into Soldier tribal with the token types, and that a good deal of soldiers are humans.
Tumblr media
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
I LOVE the Gitrog Monster. In golgari lands you’ll get this out T4 every game, sometimes T3. No one is ready for a 6/6 deathtouch T4 or T5, so you can just start swining away. Voltron builds are so goofy, any amount of trample gives you a death trample where only one point of damage is assigned per creature. That, and its draw on land discard/sac/mill is incredible with Dakmor Salvage and the like. It is absolutely busted with Underrealm Lich from the new Ravnica sets.
And that’s Shadows Over Innistrad! The legendary quota feels upped compared to the first set, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. There’s just more. What experiences have you had with these? I’d love to hear it. And as always, safe planeswalking.

Throne of Eldraine Legendary Knights EDH pt1(?)
Hey are you looking to make a deck out of the mono cycle of Knight Legends because you're on a tight budget or want to bring a super doofy niche deck to the table? Then I have the tech for you!
Starting with...Syr Faren!
Tumblr media
Coming down at 2 mana is nothing to snuff at, this Knight-riding-a-Bear is your standard 2 mana 2/2. However, when he attacks he gives another attacking creature +X/+X, where its equal to his power. Effects like Rancor or Wolfir Silverheart can pump another equally threatening creature a significant amount.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Of course, sometimes you wanna target a creature with interesting abilities that helps your combat step. You can chain triggers so that Syr Faren targets Gruul Beastmaster, then it targets Wild Beastmaster, then it boosts your board and Champion of Lambholt makes your large board basically unblockable. The synergy is amazing.
Finally you want to grant your attacking creatures evasion of some sort.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Trample and faux-unblockable definitely makes blocking unfavorable, and ensures damage gets through. These are the few, more inexpensive means of giving your team the extra push to close out the game.
What are your thoughts on Syr Faren?

Any good tips to piloting an Ezuri Claws of Progress deck? Every thing in the deck either is power 2 or lower or pumps out tokens with power 2 or lower. I used the base deck and added in some cards I like. Sage of Hours is in the sideboard in case I need to have an Infinite turn engine
Champion of Lambholt, Cultivator of Blades, Cold-Eyed Selkie
And Simic Ascendancy 😎

Oathbreaker budget picks: Nissa, Voice of Zendikar
Tumblr media
I’ve been getting into Oathbreaker lately and one of the first decks I purpose-built was this fine lady, so I thought I’d share with you guys my top 10 inclusions for building her on a budget and why I like them. For clarification, budget in this case will mean no cards above $5 and no more than three above $2. I also won’t include any particularly obvious cards like Path of Discovery or Avenger of Zendikar.
In playing her, I’ve found that Nissa can be paired with nearly any green spell with powerful effect. If your meta is big on that tricky Gideon/Wrath of God deck, Inspiring Call might be a good signature spell. Churn out lots of tokens, but can’t get much damage through? Overrun can punch through the blockers. Even something as simple as Nature’s Spiral can keep you going into the late game.
#1: Cultivator of Blades Though I rarely see it played, at least in my meta, I like to include Cultivator in nearly any deck it’s legal in. Dumping a dozen counters on this little guy and turning the board sideways always feels impactful. Maybe we are off to obvious choices after all, but at 40 cents it’s an easy pick.
#2: Fertilid A solid choice overall when playing the counters theme, Fertilid is literally a repeatable Rampant Growth. Throw more counters on it and you just keep on ramping, and in a pinch you can even let other people fetch some basics along the way.
#3: Rishkar, Peema Renegade Maybe more obvious than the previous two, Rishkar’s just good as a whole. Dump some tokens out, neg-two your general, and produce all the mana you’ll ever need.
#4: Ivy Lane Denizen Okay, this one’s not the best, but it’ll at least guarantee your tokens come in with an extra counter, or help you pump that Cultivator of Blades up to incomprehensible power. Maybe not the optimal choice, but for less than a quarter it’s hard to argue.
#5: Animation Module Kaladesh had a lot of powerful artifacts, and while this may not be on the same level as Paradox Engine or Aetherworks Marvel it can definitely pull its weight in the right deck. Pair it with Champion of Lambholt and you get tokens equal to your mana.
#6: Loyal Guardian Though it’s just deece in most other decks, Guardian really pushes your power up quickly with Nissa. Set up a board of a dozen or so plants and snackrolings, then drop this guy and prepare to swing.
#7: Nissa’s Judgement Right about here I realized top 10 budget picks might be a bit generous since a lot of what’s left is goodstuff, but here we’ve got a removal spell with potential. For only 5 CMC you buff two of your creatures (or an ally’s) and have them shoot an enemy creature without penalty.
#8: Experiment One We’re kind of getting into filler for the list, but let’s at least make it useful filler. Experiment One may not be much, but if you can consistently put counters on it you may always have that critical blocker. I was surprised, though, that of all the cards on this list to peek over a dollar it’s this guy.
#9: Armorcraft Judge One of your simple Regal Force effects, Judge can quickly refill your hand of all those cards Rishkar just helped you dump onto the table. Worst case scenario, draw a card or two and get a 3/3.
#10: Hardened Scales Sure, an obvious inclusion, but until literally as I was typing this I didn’t even know Hardened Scales could qualify for the list, but it does appear to be sitting just under $5 now. So there we go! One more counter may seem like much, but neg Nissa and play Loyal Guardian together and your field gets huge almost immediately.
Well, if you’ve made it this far, thanks! If you’d like to hear more of my budget picks for any format, go ahead and spread this around and be sure to send in a request.

Don’t Wrath Me [EDH]
Tumblr media
[Full List Here]
The first commander list I ever posted on my blog, back when i was doing the whole #TEAMGRAZZLEBRAND thing, was Kamahl. Green is one of the few colours that doesn’t lose out on removal, or car draw, or ramp when played in isolation. Kamahl has two extremely powerful abilities. The second, is more straight forward; large amounts of mana can be spend to make all of your creature’s huge, functioning as a build your own Craterhoof Behemoth. The first ability however, is often undervalued. Turning your own lands into creature’s is rarely something you will want to do. However, it prevents anyone from ever wrathing the board while Kamahl is out, if they do they will lose all their lands.
Tumblr media
When no one can clear the board tokens suddenly become a lot stronger. The goal of this deck is to flood the board while ramping as quickly as possible. In testing I actually reached the token limit on MTGO (about 200~ wolves). The list tries to run a mix of repeatable token creation effects such as Ant Queen and Imperious Perfect, as well as bursty token production effects like Beacon of Creation and Sylvan Offering.
Tumblr media
In order to make a large numbers of tokens and pay for Kamahl’s overrun effect its necessary to have access to a huge amount of mana. By playing Mono Green the deck has access to several 1 drops such as Arbor Elf and Llanowar Elves that enable early acceleration, mixed with cheap mana doubler’s like Gaea’s Touch and Vernal Bloom. By playing a mana base of over 30 basic forests cards like Harvest Season and Boundless Realms can quickly empty the deck of lands, which in addition to ramping an absurd amount, also ensure all future draws are nonland and castable.
Tumblr media
Mono Green also has access to premium removal such as Beast Within and Krosan Grip. While normally not able to kill creatures with spells, green does have access to cards like Desert Twister to ensure to take care of problems that need to go. Similarly, between cards like Shamanic Revelation and Rishkar’s Expertise it is extremely easy to keep a full hand. Finally, the remainder of the deck is a mix of combat enablers and utility effects. Creatures like Vigor and Champion of Lambholt assist and back up Kamahl’s win condition either to make sure you get through, or to still have outs if Kamahl gets dealt with. Cards like Wrap in Vigor and Scryb Ranger, and Seedborn Muse fill out utility slots enabling some plays that would otherwise not be possible.
Kamahl is a surprisingly hard to take down commander. Token strategies are only kept in reign by mass removal, something Khamal nullifies. Mono green can run terrifyingly fast, and due to the nature of the mana base more of the budget can go towards spicy cards!
Stay chill, stay hydrated. Love you. -IZ

No Sacrifice No Victory: A Warrior Tribal EDH Deck
Tumblr media
Why Warriors?
Because you’re not a COWARD, are you?
In all seriousness though, Battlebond, the upcoming 2HG set features some pretty neat Warrior cards in almost every color, including a super sweet new 5 color Legendary Warrior to head up your EDH deck.
Now that the spotlight has been put onto my favorite tribe in the game I’d like to show off the current incarnation of my 4 Color Warrior EDH Deck looks like. With all that said, let’s get down to business!
NO SACRIFICE, NO VICTORY
Warriors as a tribe are much more than just attacking. Don’t get me wrong, we’ll be doing a LOT of turning creatures sideways, but the tribe has a lot of synergies that are often overlooked in the place of just swinging face. What my deck focuses in on is generating tokens and taking advantage of +1/+1 counter generation to make a big army that can win either through direct combat or by other various means which I’ll elaborate on later.
OUR COMMANDER(S)
Tumblr media
For a while I initially used Saskia just for her colors, but after a while I saw that I just wasn’t casting her, so I decided to go with a much more powerful partnership.
Tumblr media
Not only is Reyhan a Warrior, but her ability to transfer counters from our dying creatures plays a key role in the deck and I’ve had more overall consistent results with her in the Command Zone instead of the 99.
Bruse is pretty much just here for his colors, but having something gain double strike and lifelink in a pinch sure doesn’t hurt either.
CORE CARDS
Tumblr media
These are what I consider to be the core cards of this deck. Reyhan and Kresh are able to make a powerful engine that let us trade in both token and nontoken creatures for additional counters onto Kresh. Primal Vigor lets our various token generators get out of control while Cathar’s Crusade and Bramblewood Paragon gives them the necessary counters when they enter the battlefield, while Death’s Presence lets us net additional counters from them dying. Daghatar the Adamant is probably the most efficient nontoken creature for the strategy considering he’ll yield the most counters on death, and Dragonscale General lets us get even more out of our unrelenting assault with even more counters.
This core package of cards essentially enables us to relentlessly press the attack with little concern of what lives and dies because either way we still get value regardless of outcome.
REMOVAL AND SACRIFICE
Tumblr media
Nothing too outstanding with these cards, just some ways to remove threats on Warrior bodies. Kindred Dominance is more often than not will wipe everything except your side of the board, and Utter End is there just to make sure that any extremely annoying permanents don’t stick around after the wipe.
There is a neat little interaction between Champion of Stray Souls and Butcher of Malakir that lets us retrieve creatures from our graveyard wile forcing our opponents to sacrifice their own creatures. Not the most efficient way to clear a board, but in the face of some graveyard hate it can save anything in the yard from being exiled and punish opponents for trying.
TOKEN MAKERS AND DOUBLERS
Tumblr media
This package of cards lets us generate an obscene number of Warrior tokens. Anointed Procession, Parallel Lives, and Second Harvest are pretty self explanatory.
Oketra’s Monument rewards us for casting nontoken creatures while also reducing the cost of White cards by a bit. Doesn’t seem like much but with a few of our doublers out we can get a good bit of tokens out of one creature cast.
We can often mitigate the X/X Treefolk token that Sylvan Offering gives an opponent with some forced sacrifice from the previous package, and our opponents generally aren’t able to get as much value out of their X 1/1 Elf Warriors as we are so it’s pretty negligible.
Mercy Killing is an odd card because more often than not we will be targeting one of our own creatures that would be killed by targeted removal.
RAMP AND ACCELERATION
Tumblr media
Mostly because of my own hubris the little bit of ramp/acceleration is creature-based like with Cryptolith Rite and Growing Rites. Civic Wayfinder is a neat little Warrior that gets us a basic, and Black Market will reward us for all the stuff that’ll be dying. Other than that we have some signets and a Pillar of Origins to fix for any colors that we don’t have.
(If you have the money for it though a Cavern of Souls would be pretty amazing for the deck, but since I don’t it’s not included here.)
MISC. WARRIORS
Tumblr media
These are just some nontoken Warriors that were good enough to make the cut. Brighthearth Banneret is good cost reduction in addition to a +1/+1 if we draw it too late for it to be useful. Champion of Lambholt is good with this kind of strategy because she can get out of control relatively easily and grand make our whole army unblockable. Den Protector is a slower Eternal Witness but with the relevant tribe. Grand Warlord Radha can help with mana issues and Reassembling Skeleton can help us abuse our ETB counter effects.
Boldwyr Intimidator is mostly just a flavorful inclusion that won’t let COWARDS BLOCK WARRIORS and makes our opponents creatures COWARDS.
Herald of Dromoka and Chief of the Edge are pretty self explanatory, although it’s worth noting that the reason I’m only running Chief of the Edge and not Chief of the Scale is because of Kresh’s ability since it only cares about power and not toughness.
CARD DRAW/DECK DIGGING
Tumblr media
All of these cards can either help us find what we need or draw us some cards. This Garruk is just an absolute card draw monster in this deck, plus his minus 3 and ultimate can really just let us go to town with getting things onto the board. Duskwatch Recruiter does a good job of imitating Garruk’s plus 1 with letting us filter through our deck and has cost reduction on his other side. More often than not we can cast out a pretty big Kindred Summons and get a good amount of creatures onto the battlefield.
Herald’s Horn gives us some nice cost reduction plus an additional card every now and then, while Vanquisher’s Banner boosts our army and gives us a card every time we cast a Warrior. Inspiring Call doubles as a card draw/combat trick in this deck that can make all of our creatures with a +1/+1 counter on them indestructible for the turn and give us a card for each. With the way this deck plays it’ll pretty much always net us a nonzero amount of cards.
I’m sure that Birthing Pod needs no introduction needs no introduction, but to those who are unfamiliar the card will let us sacrifice a creature to get one out of our deck which is super sweet.
Greater Good is a nice free sacrifice outlet that can get us cards in exchange for some powerful creatures and also has some nice interactions with Garna, the Bloodflame that I’ll talk about in the next segment.
BIG FINISHERS
Tumblr media
This deck has a lot of very consistent ways to close out the game depending on how it’s going. Cards like Kessig Wolf Run, Stonehoof Chieftain, and Stoneforge Masterwork are great if you’ve managed to build up the board with big Warriors and can generally finish the game off just through combat alone.
But this is EDH and things are rarely that simple so luckily the deck has a few ways to deal with that. Blood-Chin Fanatic, Goblin Bombardment, Roar of the Crowd, and Throne of the God-Pharaoh all give us ways to close out the game in a board where we might not be able to directly attack our opponents.
Throne provides some nice drain early on with a Cryptolith Rite and a few creatures, but can also just end the game on its own later on if we’ve managed to build up a big enough board to just dome everyone else at the table.
Blood-Chin Fanatic and Goblin Bombardment fill the same kind of direct damage as Throne, but work better in different board states, although sacrificing a lot of tokens with +1/+1 on them and then a big Kresh to Blood-Chin Fanatic is probably my favorite way to end a game. Bombardment also has a nice bit of utility in the face of a mass exile like Merciless Eviction or another similar spell.
Garna is a very recent addition, but she’s served the deck well in that short time even if winning with her is really janky. Essentially what we would want to do is sacrifice almost everything to Greater Good and discard as many creatures as we can, then play out Garna and return everything for one big swing. It’s not very consistent but it’s still a very satisfying way to win.
LAST CARDS
Tumblr media
These are mostly just things that I had laying around that I thought would slot into the deck pretty well, and so far they have.
Metallic Mimic is an honorary Warrior since it grants an additional +1/+1 counter to every other Warrior that enters the battlefield.
A NEW CHALLENGER APPROACHES!
Tumblr media
With the reveal of Najeela a lot of people have started to show interest in my favorite tribe, and though I claim no authority on the matter, I thought I would take some time to show off some options that I would consider adding to this deck as well as some cards from Battlebond.
BEAT EM BLUE!
If you’ve been following my blog for a while then it should be no secret that Blue is my least favorite color, so if you haven’t I’m just making my bias known. Even with that being said though, the pool for Warriors in Blue is extremely shallow, but the few that do shine through are pretty sweet.
Tumblr media
Grimgrin, Ezuri 2.0, and Herald of Secret Streams already fit really well into the counters theme of the deck and push it just completely over the top, while Surrak makes all of our creatures uncounterable and grants Trample to the whole team.
And even though I don’t like Blue very much I’d like to take a second here to specifically talk about Grimgrin and how good of a card he is for Warrior tribal. Specifically though, how he goes infinite with Presence of Gond.
Tumblr media
Once you’ve got Presence of Gond onto Grimgrin all you have to do is tap him to make a Warrior token and then sac the token to untap him and get a +1/+1 counter onto him. That’s good enough on it’s own but with Cathar’s Crusade, Death’s Presence, and Primal Vigor you’ve pretty much got infinite Warriors with infinite +1/+1 counters for your whole team.
Sure, it’s super sweet, but if you run this combo then you better be able to close out the game on that turn or be prepared to become the target of the table.
BATTLEBOND
Tumblr media
The pickings from Battlebond are pretty slim for this deck, but the ones that make the cut are pretty decent. Rushblade Commander is a nice haste-enabler for our Warriors. Decorated Champion slots into the +1/+1 counters subtheme of the deck and makes for a nice juicy target for Blood-Chin Fanatic as well. Blaring Recruiter is just more token generation, Mindblade Render is more card draw, and Thrasher Brute pings an opponent every time a Warrior enters the battlefield which will be pretty frequent. Thrilling Encore is basically just another Garna effect which, while not super consistent, can still be really fun.
Anywho, that’s the rundown on Warrior tribal! This is by no means a comprehensive analysis of the viability of the tribe or anything like that, it was mostly just me gushing about my favorite tribe in all of Magic! I hope that y’all see what I love about the tribe and maybe consider giving them a chance for your next EDH deck!
(@queen-marchesa @rhonas-indomitable @gardianforce @dad-nixilis I remember y’all wanted to see it the most so here it is!)

EDH Day Yesterday
I played about 5 or 6 games of EDH yesterday, I lost count. Good times though, it’s been a while since I’ve played that much in one day. I got to try out some of my new cards from Explorers too, so all in all it was a pretty productive evening.
The first game I played was with Daghatar.
http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/onward-we-march/
I didn’t win this one, but it was still a good game. I didn’t feel like I was doing nothing all game, y’know? I got Twilight Prophet out pretty early, so she drew me a few cards and did her thing. Certainly a solid card, but I think the MVP here was Tireless Tracker. I must have gotten about 5 or 6 extra cards off it, so it was really doing work. Unfortunately, someone was stopping me from untapping my things, so I really needed a Champion of Lambholt to take him out in one turn. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen. Oh well. I really need to find room in here for a Bane of Progress. That would have helped a lot.
Next game I played Thromok.
http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/thromok-the-dank-engine/
This deck stomped hard. I was pretty surprised, actually. I always thought that the fact that I need Thromok to win would keep the otherwise high power-level cards of this deck in check, but I guess that’s not the case. Good to know it works, I suppose.
After that, I spammed Brion Stoutarm for the rest of the day.
http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/nuclear-stoutarm/
I would like to say I won another game that day, but I didn’t. For whatever reason, this deck isn’t quite in league with my others yet. A couple of the games I was doing okay, but that’s about as good as it got. The deck is full of big things, that’s just its nature, so I don’t think there’s any avoiding that. I don’t even know if that’s the problem though. I guess I need to find more ways to cheat stuff into play or something. Maybe Quicksilver Amulet or something similar? It’s hard to say, really.
And that was that. I’m still slowly thinking of how to build a Rashmi deck, so I’ll post more on that as it happens. Thanks for reading!
