In truth, it has been challenging to be here — in a new place and focused on art in a way I haven’t done before. It’s uncomfortable for sure. So. I drowned myself in music and podcasts. But in the last 2 days, I’ve craved and embraced the quiet — spending time in silence and stillness. ————————— Wherever we are, what we hear is mostly noise. When we ignore it, it disturbs us. When we listen to it, we find it fascinating. — John Cage ————————— I’ve been doing some composition studies, which is new. One week in and I’m still getting into a rhythm. In the morning, I’ll make a coffee, walk out to the studio to open the doors and windows, then go on a short walk while I drink my coffee, and head back to the studio. ————————— I’ve been playing with charcoal, which is completely foreign to me, but I like the freedom in it. There’s also an interesting quality of seeing the erasure of it - a visual record of what was done. ————————— Photos: (1) Papercut date in some grape vines. (2) Studio right after I moved furniture around and set up. (3) Tree-lined path that will hopefully find its way into a papercut. (4) Studio in the afternoon light. (5) Charcoals and other tools. Starting anew. Uncertainty, restlessness, and anxiety were my constant companions in 2020 and left me unable to create, so it makes sense to me that I made fewer pieces than any other year since I started papercutting. I dove into other work, focused on @kidsandartorg and @guildofamericanpapercutters, and prioritized long walks and phone calls. But, I recognize I still made choices towards art - noteably, leaving my art home (of 9 years!) from Art Explosion to @1890bryantstudios, and accepting an art residency @chalkhillartistresidency in October (my first!). While there are still plenty of issues to be uncertain, restless, or anxious about, coming to you from my small corner, I’m extremely excited to get back to creating.
