Maurice Prendergast (American, 1858 – 1924) Beach at St. Malo ca. 1907 Oil on canvas, 36.8 x 44.5 cm Carmen Thyssen Collection • #Repost @paintings_i_love № 3205 Prendergast, who enjoyed swimming, depicted the seashore in countless paintings from Revere Beach or Gloucester in Massachusetts to St. Malo in France. Prendergast loved the sea, and at times, as he was attempting a water cure to alleviate his deafness, his pleasure in bathing took on an almost hedonistic quality. "To take off one's clothes and lay full stretched on the sand exposed to the wind and the sun is the finest sensation I know on a spring day. Even in cold days in March one little realizes the penetrating force of the sun on the body." Although Prendergast had visited St. Malo during his 1891-1894 stay in Paris and also in 1914, it was his two-month summer visit in 1907 that inspired most of his canvases. St. Malo, situated on the Brittany Coast, had at the time a little more than ten thousand inhabitants. Prendergast was obviously attracted by the coastal town with "its high tides and ramparts, " where he painted such landmarks as the lighthouse and Chateaubriand's Tomb, but it was the fine sandy beach with its colourful bathing tents that attracted him the most. As with the artist's earlier paintings of Revere Beach, he has assumed an elevated viewpoint looking down to the bathers on the warm sands of the resort town… • • • • • • • • #Prendergast #AmericanArt #Seascape #impressionisme #impressionistpainting #artforeveryone #art #fineartpainting #paintingoftheday #peinture # #arthistorian #peintre #malerei #americanart #americanimpressionism #americanpainting #americanpainter #postimpressionism #postimpressionismo #postimpresionismo (à Sète, France) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cp4qaDeIEpm/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Born on December 10, 1854
William Ladd Taylor 🎨 American painter (1854-1926)
#WilliamLaddTaylor #Americanpainter #VirtualArtMuseum
William Ladd Taylor (1854-1926) was an American illustrator.
William Ladd Taylor was born at Grafton, Massachusetts on December 10, 1854. He studied art in Boston and New York, and in Paris under Boulanger and Lefebvre in 1884–85. His drawings, many of which first appeared in magazines, are essentially narrative in type and show keen understanding of human nature, with careful, historical accuracy. He published several volumes of his work which contained illustrations of the nineteenth century in New England, the pioneer West, Longfellow, the Psalms, old songs, American life, American literature, and the Old Testament.
He married Mary Alice Fitz in 1888.
His work was featured in the magazine the Ladies Home Journal, from 1895; the office also exhibited his oils and water-colours and sold reproductions of these.

“Sunlight on David” #acryliconcanvas 18x24” #tedrandler started in 2000 finished 2020 I read that Leonardo da Vinci carried the Mona Lisa with him through the years, reworking the painting until he died. I usually just leave older works of mine alone, to rework them would be like photoshopping your high school yearbook photo to change as you aged. They are markers in time. But then I found this painting I done when we lived on the farm. I remember what I was seeing at the time I painted it, but it seemed unfinished. So I took a couple of painting sessions and spruced it more toward what I had wanted but couldn’t achieve at the time. Perhaps in 20 mores years I will tinker with it again. #reworkingpaintings #figurepainting #malefigure #sunlight #americanpainting #nostalgia https://www.instagram.com/p/B_QxvO_DGzx/?igshid=fi000by29err

Rosina Emmet Sherwood (13 Dec 1854 – 19 Jan 1948) was an American painter.
Sherwood may have received her earliest training in art from her mother; #JuliaPiersonEmmet | Julia Colt Pierson Emmet (1829 – Sep 26, 1908) who was an American illustrator and painter. A sketchbook dating to 1873 was in the hands of family members in 1987.
Rosina traveled to Europe in 1876–1877, and was presented to Queen Victoria during the trip. Returning to New York, she and her friend #DoraWheeler began study art, and by 1881 she took studio space in the Tenth Street Studio Building.
Among her earliest works were illustrations for publications such as Harper's Magazine, and in 1880 she won the $1,000 first prize in a competition to design a Christmas card for Louis Prang & Company.
Sherwood and Wheeler worked together in the design firm Associated Artists, run by #CandaceWheeler, Dora's mother; they designed tapestries, curtains, and wallpaper. Subjects included a variety drawn from American literature. In 1884–1885 the women attended classes at the Académie Julian in Paris. Source and more Wikipedia

Take a #walkthrough around our most recent #exhibition of @linda.stojak a true #pioneer of #americanpainting a #hero of mine definitely a true pioneer!! With a successful career spanning more than three decades, Linda Stojak paints solitary figures captured in their pictorial plane, obsessively worked and reworked until the paint itself becomes at one with a search for meaning. The technique is both thoughtful and gestural. In Stojak’s paintings, the expressionistic is played against the conceptual reflecting a synthesis of emotions, fears, conflicts, doubts, and experiences that comprise the human condition. Linda Stojak has been awarded a Guggenheim fellowship, a Leeway Grant, a Distinguished Achievement Award from Arcadia University, and a residency in Toblach, Italy. Her work has been reviewed and discussed in numerous publications including The New York Times, Artforum, Riot Material, Art in America and ARTnews. Her work is represented in over 300 private collections as well as in public collections such as The University of Pennsylvania, Brown University, Seattle University, and The Harn Museum of Art. Linda Stojak (b. 1955) received her Masters in Fine Art from Pratt Institute and lives and works in Philadelphia, PA.
