We made it. Our last day of the Floating Artist Studio was pretty glorious. Marie, May and Bob left Casini Ranch early in the morning to make sure to beat the mid-day coastal winds which make paddling kind of impossible. Along the way nature kept getting better and better. Otters, birds and seals were our only other company. As we paddled into Jenner under Highway One, we noticed an island where we stopped to explore. Here on Penny Island we discovered a geo cache, climbed one of the most amazing Eucalyptus trees ever and walked around an interesting old building. After reaching the beach we spent about an hour basking in the sun across the cove from a huge group of seals. The trip down the Russian River from Healdsburg to the coast is a trip most people never do. I feel not only fortunate to have not only completed it, but also to have experienced in such a special way with some very special artists.

Day 2 of the Floating Artist Studio. The rope swing at Hacienda Bridge was both inspirational and dangerous. Nick Wylie saves the day by carrying our food and equipment in his car vs. paddling it in the boats. More rope swings and some skinny dipping followed as we made our way down the river from Mirabel Park. Nick and Dan at Johnson’s Beach made everyone feel at home as we set up camp there for the night. Marie’s boat looked amazing among the row of Johnson’s Beach canoes. And we install Constance Hockaday’s piece in the gallery as our first piece in the show.

Day #1, Floating Artist Studio: Constance Hockaday, Yuko Inatsuki, Marie Lorenz, Betty Nguyen, Bob Pullum, Greg Stimac and May Wilson take off from Healdsburg Dam en route to Mirabel Park Campground. Lollie from River’s Edge Kayak & Canoe Trips gave everyone the details of the river and what to expect for our 3 rental canoes and Marie’s handmade boat. This was the biggest leg of the journey to the coast and the boats had every piece of camping equipment and our food. The summer dam at Wohler Bridge was a lot of work to get the boats around but we made it!
