vatican trio angst is the two of them being the same cheery goofy guys round after round after round while tesilid increasingly becomes gloomy and suicidal, weighed down by the experience of dozens of deaths that no doubt include theirs.
hestio & ephael see tesilid come home from greenwall one day and no longer really recognise this guy anymore, what on earth happened to him? knowing him well enough that they can immediately tell that this taciturn guy is acting off, but not having any way of knowing what he went through because it all happened in a timeline you have no access to.
you're the same cheerful guys as you have always been, and the childhood friend you've stuck to since the three of you were 10 is suddenly out of reach.
he's always been standoffish but now feels different. you have no way of knowing. and he can't talk.

Ephael as a character is kind of crazy because he's the most laidback and cheerful guy in the whole series, he's described to have a perpetual smile on his face, he takes all of Hestio's snide remarks in his stride, he always keeps his cool during critical situations, and he doesn't swear when even Tesilid does. And then he does shit like come up with Plan B, and when the topic of the Vatican's absurb control over them comes up he turns into a bitter, snapping creature full of spite. And then half a beat later he turns back into his cheerful goofy self and makes fun of Hestio.
Novel 13 (after Ailette's first divine advent):
E: "What about all those times they said we were going to be the ones to save the world?"
H: Sounding much less bitter, his friend reasoned, "We're better off this way. Saving the world really isn't my thing. I might as well leave the church now."
E: "Pfft, how are you going to leave? You think the religious order is going to let us just pack up and go?"
H: "Yeah. Why not?"
E: "Yeah, no way that's happening." The blonde boy said dismissively. "They're going to work us like dogs even after world peace has been achieved. We're nothing more to them than pawns to keep the Vinchester Kingdom and Ragneif Republic of Magic at bay. That's the whole reason why they take in orphans, so that they could graft stigmata onto us."
Novel 19 (morning of the Day of Sacrifice):
“Only motherless, fatherless mutts like us should be here. Ah, how sad.”
He is like, 10 years old. What has he been through that he's so much more bitter than Hestio "yells at everything" Ligenel.
I'm honestly kind of wondering if Irinbi just hadn't figured out Hestio & Ephael's characterisation back then, or if Tapas screwed up the novel TL. It's a little weird that Ephael was the one explaining why there's no way the Vatican would let them go, when in every interaction since then he's always been the clueless guy who doesn't know a thing about dungeons so that a character can explain the worldbuilding to the readers. And in the webcomic they did swap lines for this part in Ch 13. Ephael's lines here do sound exactly like something Hestio would say, ngl. But Ephael being extremely pressed about his lot in life and wanting to return to the secular life is also a very consistent part of his characterisation since then, so like??? What goes on.

scratches head. rereading toy mansion arc and genuinely, how on earth did ephael manage to kill all the children in the mansion in the original storyline.
1. the entrance to the boss room closes the instant the fight starts. there's a bit of conflicting info about when it opens again - toy mansion (ch 23) says that even the boss can't run once the fight has started (more specifically, while fighting is in progress). but dungeon 300 says that the boss can be careless and open the dungeon if they mistakenly believe that everyone has died. maybe the specific condition is that no one has to be in the state of fighting?? so the fight ends once tesilid & ephael give up, even if they're still alive? i believe that once rodrigo gets the chance to, he would've chosen to open the doors open the doors to watch ephael wreck havoc on the other children.
edit: just realised that the "boss fight" started the instant rodrigo first appears and that the whole mansion is the "boss room", nvm
2. tesilid would've beat ephael's ass for that. how did that go. was he running after ephael trying to stop him while ephael was like, opening cupboards checking for kids. is it even possible for ephael to find the kids, much less kill them, if tesilid is trying to stop him? tesilid is much, much stronger than ephael - he brought down the mole in an instant when ephael couldn't do so even with hestio's help. PLUS, if ephael was that determined, i think the only thing that would have effectively stopped him was death. did tesilid have to try to kill him? his own roommate? or did tesilid also give up and help ephael track down the other kids? i don't think tesilid would have - not just because it would go against his stigma commandments, but also because it goes against his own personal beliefs. did ephael knock him out first? or was ephael entering rooms and checking under beds while tesilid was also tracking him down? probably telling him that this was wrong and they should find some other way?
3. isn't the mansion supposed to be big as hell. did ephael really track down every single kid in the whole place to kill them. the round of hide and seek they played in canon (w the monsters as the seekers) is scary but even that isn't as deranged as this. that's messed up. that's messed up. how many children were still alive by then and how long did ephael take to track the last of them down. and if tesilid was trying to stop him, how long did ephael have to run. how long did he have to spend thinking about the blood on his hands and how he was soon planning to take his own life. like. can you imagine. ephael coaxes a child to come out of their hiding spot. he's a stigma bearer from the vatican, so he's safe, he says. the child looks up at him, clothed in white and covered in blood.

tbh i really want to dig into ephael's mind... his sense of morality is so fascinating.
this is the kid who, at age 10, decided on "Plan B" and in another world carried it out. who committed mass murder and then suicide.
who saw that the food in the toy mansion caused one to go crazy and decided that was an excellent time to be funny and fake-feed his friend.
who was implied to have been taught not to use offensive divine powers on humans, but still asked hestio to buff him anyway because the brainwashed kid "looks like a demon to me"
but like. he's not evil. he's also the kid who committed mass murder not to ensure his own survival, but that of the person who could do the most good for the world.
he just jumps to really drastic actions real quick and is really nonchalent about death, be it his own or others'. he feels bad about it but it's not something he really avoids, and he even has the mental fortitude to actively pursue it.
and it's not that he's an overly pessimistic guy either; he fought until they had to go up against rodrigo, and he was absolutely correct in assessing their skill levels.

creating a spreadsheet of the trio's lines in the webnovel vs webcomic (as one does), and. i am on the FLOOR their characterisation differs so much from the webnovel and webcomic?!?!??? 😭😭 they took away all of hestio's flavour!!! and Ephael is a lot more stereotypical sunshine too i am losing my mind
Gone:
In the toy mansion, Ephael said that Tesilid was not just his friend, but his "best friend", so Ailette gave him more food. Hestio got very visibly sad and angry.
Whenever they're in battle, Hestio kind of talks to Ephael like he's a P*kemon ("Ephael, go and bite them!" / "Uh... okay.")
Ephael is pretty quiet and subdued throughout the toy mansion, while in the comic he's very artificially cheery.
ALMOST THE ENTIRETY OF HESTIO'S LINES WHEN THEY SNUCK TESILID FOOD IN PRISON IS GONE?!?!?!?? 😭😭😭😭😭😭 THE VIBES ARE SO DIFFERENT
Webnovel has BOTH Hestio and Ephael handing over food (in the webcomic only Ephael brought food. I dunno what Hestio was doing there.)
ONLY the webnovel has Hestio's extremely cute "What? Are you going to refuse the food because the rules are important? (annoyed but also genuinely scared)" / ".....I thought I'd have to shove the food down your mouth if you refused. Well, eat up."
The webcomic has Hestio suddenly ruin the entire mood by saying "🙄😒 did you know 🤓 the vatican is taking things out on you bc you refuse to kill heretics. also idc if the heretics are actually evil or not, what matters is that the vatican wants to know if youre on their side." like stfu please 😭 In the webnovel Hestio only brings this up because Ephael went "cheer up! if it werent for the city making a fuss, the vatican wouldn't have done this" and Hestio corrected him bc he wanted Tesilid not to misunderstand his situation with the Vatican.
What did they make comic!Hestio so callous for !!!!! 😭😭😭 Hestio is a SOFTIE with a mean streak and sharp tongue!!!

anyway speaking of the vatican trio i was so overwhelmed by the need to see their goofy dynamic that the angsty scene i was writing suddenly became rather silly.
hestio and ephael stop making every scene you're in comic relief challenge. this was supposed to be a serious scene

edit: i misremembered things LMAO please ignore this whole post
ephael is such a funny guy bc he's the one who came up with the insane "plan B is to kill all the other children and then myself so the strongest among us will live" plan, like he's the definition of self-sacrificial right there, and yet whenever the hestio+ephael duo point out tesilid's abnormal doormat & self-sacrificial tendencies, it's ephael who voices it.
when tesilid's under detention for no good reason but says "i'm alright" and ephael replies "there you go again :/". when they meet ailette post-regression and both times he says "when we first met, i thought a second tesilid had appeared"

Ch 13 when the vatican trio first appear. The official TL clarifies whether Hestio or Ephael is speaking, and it's the opposite of what i thought it would be.

Okay I finished the spreadsheet for round 17 up until the end of the mirror dungeon. My conclusion: yeah, ✨i got no clue who's who✨
One of them has the tendency to call Ailette by name, while the other uses "leader"/"captain"
My first guess was that it's Hestio using "Ailette" and Ephael addressing her by title - Hestio seems to have a stronger tendency to make fun of her (pretty sure he's the one who called her a cabbage for having layers of surprises; ch 159) and I think Ephael might still be feeling guilty about having tried to kill her in the past
BUT back in the snow queen dungeon, Hestio seemed to insist on calling her by title while Ephael was more casual with her. And literally in the same scene where Ephael calls her "Your Eminence" and all that when he confesses to having tried to kill her, he also calls her by name (I'm pretty sure it's him anyway - "I believe youre an adult, Ailette" when Tesilid refused to drink)
so who knows?!?? lol. maybe they BOTH alternate between "Ailette" and her titles.
the only consistent pieces of characterisation are:
Ephael is really curious about relationships
Hestio & Ephael are very innocent ("What's this strange belt?" "I know right?")
Hestio and Ailette make fun of each other a couple of times. This does not happen with Ephael-Ailette
Hestio constantly proactively and loudly pushing the others to the front and staying safely at the back
Hestio's really noisy. I don't know how else to put it, but if he doesn't like something or sees a chance to make fun of Ephael, you can be sure he makes it known.
all I can say is, thank god Tesilid switched to calling her "Allie" and that Ash uses "sister"/"brother"
