Chainsaw Man 152 'early' analysis
Hey look at that I WAS RIGHT
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(back on my 150 post)
This whole chapter really does feel like we're in the end game. This isn't something Denji can just walk back on especially after he just starts eating spear (lol) they fucked around and found out. While I do kind of doubt this is actually going to mean Spear is erased from existance- or memory however the chainsaw devil's power really works, its not out of the question.
Tumblr media
Looking at it from a meta perspective Spear and Whip are completely disposable as they're both nameless killers who only show up to fight and nothing else. Their death would mean nothing for the story other than Miri having less people pressuring him into being a bastard. Plus spears and whips aren't used in the manga as weapons outside of these hybrids so deleting them really wouldn't change anything. So i'd say its a 60/40 chance as to if denji is going to go through with erasing spear from existence. In retrospect this is a pretty insane chapter for Nayuta cause look at it from her perspective this is basically a villain origin story for her. Her brother who's the only person in the world who actually cares about her as an individual has just gone full murder psycho and told her he doesn't want to be involved with her anymore because he'd rather get off on killing people. Thats fucking INSANE and especially since Nayuta seems to be with the adults during this fight she could very well end up being dragged back into the same hellish system that created Makima.
Tumblr media
Nayuta has damn near exclusively been able to live a good life BECAUSE Denji was the one taking care of her. She's a devil and any devil that doesn't work with public safety is killed and the ones that do work with them get locked away underground or get turned into tools. I've said it before but this ending goes to show Denji and Chainsaw Man are one in the same, not that we the readers could have any doubt of that. But everyone in universe seems to be unable to separate the two. Yoshida only wants Denji at the cost of CSM, Makima only wanted CSM at the cost of Denji. After this we might see Nayuta being afraid of the CSM but still caring about Denji.
Tumblr media
Im not sure if its intentional or not but Denji's chainsaw eyes seem to be missing for the whole chapter until the end. I would say this is an intentional detail but theres one panel where he has eyes before the climax. So I don't know if this is an error or intentional.

Understanding Denji’s spiral into descent. His distaste for the ordinary life and separating himself from Nayuta.
Tumblr media
At the end of Chainsaw Man Part 1, Denji had been entrusted with looking after Nayuta. Along came the necessity to lead a normal life as it was important another corrupt personality like Makima would not resurface.
At first, Denji wasn’t interested in the idea but after everything he’d gone through, I’m sure that it was something he had to reconsider for the greater good. Also Pochita also encouraged Denji to do so.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
However throughout Part 2, Denji in more ways than one, shows his dissatisfaction with this new life. Although he’s come around to appreciate some aspects of it (nurturing Nayuta + pets) there remains an itch that craves just a little bit more.
When confronted with this fact, Denji questions himself, showing some level of uncertainty. Perhaps even conflicted.
“I do, right?”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And surely enough, Yoshida/Public Safety’s ultimatum to Denji to refrain from transforming only further complicated his dilemma.
Being Chainsaw Man fulfilled Denji’s inner desire(s). It gave him the glory, fame, notoriety, etc. The one thing that made him happy has now become consequential to his livelihood. Which, once again, rids him of all autonomy.
Though, it could be argued that unlike Barem, Yoshida’s bargain was a harsh attempt to preserve Denji’s life for a bit longer and not allow Public Safety make to make use of him for the time being.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now to the current events of the story.
Denji has lost what has allowed him to sustain an ordinary life. The home, pets and foundation is burnt to the ground. Most of it gone, leaving him no other choice to cast all else to the side.
Tumblr media
I don’t think Denji would voluntarily put Nayuta in harm’s way. As mentioned before, he’s grown to care for Nayuta’s wellbeing. At this point, he wouldn’t let her become collateral damage due to his indulgence.
Because up until now, he’s done everything with her best interest at heart and he’ll continue to do so—In his own way.
Denji as Chainsaw Man in all of its wreckage, will only have Nayuta follow in his footsteps but as the Control Devil. This would no doubt null the intended purpose of raising Nayuta. It’s better to keep her at a distance.
In chapter 149, it was only by mere whim that Nayuta was deterred from going down a destructive path. If Denji allowed for it, it would have happened. No question.
Tumblr media
From this point forward, Denji will be chaotic, brash, and utterly gratified in the pursuit of his dreams as the Chainsaw Man.
Tumblr media
From how I see it, he hasn’t truly given up on Nayuta.
He simply went for the choice with the best outcome for all parties involved.

You have to fight for yourself
Hey! Have you noticed the visual parallels between the gun fiend and Chainsaw man in this latest (152th) chapter?
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
The parallel between Aki and Denji in the last chapter
No, I hadn't noticed, and I like that others have because I might have an explanation for this parallel.
Fujimoto likes parallels, but this time he does it the other way round. Let me explain: for me, and according to my interpretation, he had already made an explicit reference to chapters 78/79 in this chapter:
Chapter 142 exploited Denji's relationship with others, but also with being a CSM, just as Fumiko's speech only reinforces the fact that even when she places herself as a victim, she reinforces Denji's position as a martyr.
Even when Fumiko argues that she saw CSM as a child, the chapter proves her wrong, whether through her unsuccessful manipulation techniques, her many contradictions, but above all her behaviour is typical, allowing Denji to deny the pain he suffered by killing his brother.
Tumblr media
I won't go into it again ((if you want to know more, the link is above)) the only thing you need to remember here is that Fujimoto still intends to exploit Aki's death, albeit in a subtle, poetic way in part 2.
In chapter 152, Denji suffers because he has decided to; his suffering is his own, he demands it and even sees it as a means of experiencing pleasure. What's more, this chapter follows on from chapters 150/151 in Denji's claim to his own identity: I WANT to be CSM, and no one is going to stop me. The negative consequences are mine because I've decided to.
Tumblr media
Whereas during his confrontation with Aki, Denji's identity was stolen by his "fans" (a theme dealt with in chapter 142), who positioned themselves as the only suffering parties (ignoring Denji's), and it was the frightened, bruised men and women who decided that CSM had to save them, had to act and kill.
Tumblr media
So chapter 152 is more than an awakening, it's Denji who takes back the right to suffer if he has decided to do so. Before, it was always the others who decided, but instead of taking the plunge and saying: I'll never let myself suffer again, this time the martyr doesn't want his suffering to be taken away from him.
Tumblr media
Because if we take away Denji's suffering, he won't turn into a CSM anymore
If that's taken away, his memories of Power and Aki are fragmented
These last two sentences are actually linked, because Denji has learnt to love just as much as he has learnt to suffer through Aki and Power. Aki's curse is to have been possessed by his sworn enemy, the Gun Devil, who reclaims his rights over the man who tried to resist him: to be there to make Aki's family suffer, always, even the second time around.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As the curse repeats itself, Aki's mind is stuck in his childhood, when it hadn't yet been broken, so he's blindly enjoying himself. Because, paradoxical though it may sound, it was when Aki realised the cruelty of this world, the loss of loved ones, that he tried to protect his family - the greatest act of love. Suffering is an awareness.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aki had gambled on his suffering before, wasting his years of life with almost no ties. And when he began to change his perception of wanting to do something for his family, those wasted years didn't leave him enough time to protect his second family.
While he was escaping the suffering of his first family, he didn't even realise that he was causing the second to suffer. Fate was simply amused.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It is just as much for Power, a bestial being by nature who has already learnt about the suffering of losing loved ones with Meowy's kidnapping, Aki's anguish possessed at the door, bringing a birthday cake to Denji as an act of kindness, before realising that she would rather die than let Denji die. Suffering is also what brings destinies together and intertwines them.
Tumblr media
Power and Aki are symbols of the same thing: when suffering began to be reflected in others, materialising in the fear of losing a loved one, fate turned against them.
So what Denji is doing is a narrative attempt to free himself from his fate, if he starts to fear more for Nayuta than for himself, if he stops being CSM for her, then the passage of suffering turned against oneself, there will always be someone to catch the ball. So Denji ends the cycle.
Tumblr media
Denji will see no-one but his pain, Pochita, he will ignore even the flames that tore him away from his animal family, he will push back to Nayuta. It's a retreat into his own identity in the final chapter, a futile attempt to escape from a pain even worse than the pain of being cut in two, the pain of seeing another part of himself ripped away: a loved one.
Tumblr media
Now we've pretty much understood the parallel. But don't forget the beginning of this post, Denji is doing exactly what Aki is doing.
Chapter 152 is the hero's attempt to regain control of his destiny, as if suddenly aware of the suffering inherent in the work, wanting to reverse it, to turn it into pleasure.
But he will not escape his fate. Denji may laugh, but only fate will have the last laugh.

i'm going to be sick. hard as fuck panel and -- the horror of this, the grim absurdity of it, the way denji leans into that feeling, wants that feeling, he's grinning, don't you see, under the metal of the chainsaw:
this is the karaoke scene echoing outwards but this time the Violence emanates from denji. thinking about how the weapon hybrids' bodies smear the pages, limbs and sharp lines and the chainsaw man: chaotic and primal within it. the previous chapters where's he's not at all a participant in this Violence as the hybrids tear themselves apart on their own, and now: he tears through them. the house burns, and so does his attempt at a normal life, at what pochita let him want and so told him to want, it ends and it all makes sense now, doesn't it?
and he tells nayuta to leave. she's the only human resembling face focused on in the last few pages, she's the unwitting creation of all of makima's twisted love, the subversive product of part one's otherwise obvious nightmare, the sort of Moral of the story. and she's told to leave.
god. genuinely, there's something so visceral and real about fujimoto writes victimhood, about how it builds itself around denji. about how he inhabits it. i'm going to be sick.

Chainsaw Man is about self-destruction. It’s about self-destruction as a means of reclaiming your autonomy in an environment where you are consistently denied it. Chainsaw Man is about denial of autonomy. Chainsaw Man is about how, when you are in an environment where you are denied your own autonomy, you learn to view interpersonal relationships as interactions you have no control over unless you find a means of controlling the other members of that relationship — whether that be through methods of fight, flight, freeze, or fawn. Chainsaw Man is about how denial of autonomy is framed as love. Chainsaw Man is about how love that denies autonomy is violence.

i loveee this panel. the way that their severed legs are intertwined, the way that spear’s legs look like they could be attached to denjis body, the way that denji is latched on to spear’s upper body and if you took all the blood and guts away it could almost be a hug or tangled embrace. muwah fujimoto does weird body horror so good & i like how this one could be something akin to intmacy if not for… everything else that happens in this manga.

On one hand I’m glad Chainsaw man in chainsawing all over the place…but on the other side it feels like Denji has given up. He’s facing another mental break moment like in Part 1 and while part of him doesn’t want Nayuta to get wrapped up in everything so he tries to push her away so she doesn’t get hurt by him or their enemies, I think another part of him wants to be rid of his responsibilities entirely.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This fight wasn’t even a fight, it was a one sided massacre.
Bonus Nayuta being a scared child in the background…
