My all time favorite place was absolutely a front. A pizza place opened a few blocks from our apartment so on a walk one day we sung by to grab a pizza. They were legitimately shocked when we first walked in to order, it was just a couple of Russian guys standing around. It didn't even smell of pizza. I'm pretty sure we were probably their very first actual customers at this point. They were cold but polite enough and actually took our order, which was handed off in a completely unmarked box.
Long story short we became regulars to the point they knew our order, and we'd sometime do delivery - the one time the very new delivery driver took too long to drop our order off we had one of the main guys at our door 30 minutes later with a bunch of sides as an apology. It was sweet but also a little off putting not going to lie. We didn't even call to complain so I don't know how he knew it took 45 instead of the usual 15 but he did.
Anyways we moved a while back and I straight up miss my russian mob pizza joint because as crazy as it sounds, it was a pretty solid pizza for the price.
I went to this Sicilian pizza joint yesterday and it’s literally so underground and such a big hole in the wall that their parking lot is wrecked, their front door is bolted up, and you have to enter through the kitchen and walk to the front end past all the ovens and down a narrow ass hallway and then all the tables and chairs are fold ups and the ceiling is all saggy and it looks awful but fuck me it’s been there for 70+ years and makes the best damn thin crust pizza in the city and no one hardly knows about it because it looks like an abandoned building
