the fandom acting as if kyoshi is the most brutal cutthroat avatar lady there is makes me shudder to think about how they’d react to me as an avatar. and i dont mean this in a ‘ohhhhh im so built different 😈💪🔥’ kind of way, i mean this in a ‘if i was put through what kyoshi was put through my main goal would’ve been to blow up and then act like i dont know nobody.’

very interesting how in ATLA despite being scared of destiny & the responsibility it brings, discovering & acting out their destinies is shown to be an incredibly uplifting thing for most of the characters—and even for people like yue, where their destiny is tragic, she also seems to have found peace by accepting it—whereas in the kyoshi novels every character either has a very faulty idea of what their destiny is, or is absolutely disgusted by it. sometimes both, like in the cases of kyoshi & yun who both believe themselves to be something they aren’t (kyoshi wants to go unnoticed & be happy with her loved ones the way they already are. she doesn’t expect or want things to ever change because she believes herself to be unimportant. yun thinks he’s the avatar, who is called “the most important person in the world” multiple times throughout the books. he gave up what little he had to become the avatar & everything he does is to work towards his destiny of living up to yangchen’s legacy.) and then they find out their real destinies (kyoshi is the avatar. yun is no one special.) and are absolutely destroyed by it—especially yun, who had no stable sense of identity outside of a destiny that never existed. after they figure it out kyoshi runs away from jianzhu, who’s telling her she’s the avatar (despite your every attempt to stop me, i will dedicate my life to you, kyoshi.) & yun defeats father glowworm, who’s telling him he’s nothing (you’re more trouble then you’re worth. there are better meals to be had.) but they both take their opponents words to heart. kyoshi first accepts her destiny as a means of getting back at jianzhu, and eventually comes to accept it as a part of who she is, while yun retains his anger about being denied a destiny (and the humanity people treated him with when he had it) that he thought he’d earned. the only major character in the kyoshi books who breaks this pattern is rangi, who understands & feels pride in her destiny, which never wavers over the course of the story: defend the avatar, and do it well. her consistency in conviction plays well off the constant chaos of everyone around her & means she’s able to ground kyoshi to her destiny in a way no one else can.

From what we've seen of Fire Nation royal siblings, having one child was probably a deliberate choice.

When do you think Mai and Zuko would have their daughter? And do you like the theory that they had trouble conceiving I personally don't but people pass it around like it's Canon.

I was trying to figure exactly this out a few months ago. No one disputed my theory of her being born roughly 10 years after AtLA ends, making Zuko 26-27 and Mai 25-26, so that's what I'm going with.

If anyone else has tried to do the math, perhaps they're trying to explain the gap in time there with the headcanon about trouble conceiving. (Of course, the comics have tried to help with this gap by having Maiko breaking up 1 year after AtlA and staying that way for 2 in-universe years already. If 'Ashes of the Acedemy' doesn't get them back together, maybe we can kick the can down the road for another 6-7 years. :P) It's also a handy explanation for why Maiko would only have one child, monarchs usually being big about having as many heirs as they can as quickly as they can.

It is an easy explanation, so I'm not against the idea and might use it in fanfic backstory, but neither do I have any enthusiasm for it. I'd rather just give Zuko some extended family who could theoretically inherit the crown to prevent a government crisis and yet remain vulnerable to some antagonistic politicking by a throne-seeking Azula.

As for other explanations why Zuko and Mai might not have kids right away, it's a toss up between anxiety fueled by their childhood trauma and awesome globe-spanning adventures that keep them too busy. Or maybe both, considering this couple.

the amount of fire nation royals are actually pretty vague unless you search through the walls of text on the online wiki page. (i love you atla wiki contributors) so i feel like i should just list off the fire lords and their immediate family for convenience

- the first fire lord

Shown in the second Smoke and Shadow comic, no known family, shared power with a council of fire sages, is not named :(

- fire lord yosor

mentioned in The Shadow of Kyoshi, no known family, allies with avatar szeto

- fire lord gonryu

mentioned in The Dawn of Yangchen, no known family, had beef with the Earth King of his time

- fire lord chaeryu

mentioned in The Shadow of Kyoshi, a man whore with multiple lovers, two of them being Sulan and Huazo, also had two sons named Zoryu and Chaejin, his reign was apparently a good time for agriculture

- fire lord zoryu

actually has dialogue in the Kyoshi novels (holy shit), the fire lord directly after chaeryu, had diabolical beef with his brother, and centralized the power in the fire nation

- fire lord taiso

has dialogue in The Reckoning of Roku, the father of zeisan and sozin, husband to hazei, oversaw a growth of industrialization and prosperity in the fire nation, and the outer islands pissed him off to the point he sent the fire navy to sit them the fuck down
