one moment that stuck out to me from the new chapter (which i loved btw, fabulous, made me grin ear to ear) was dorry referring to the drums of liberation as 宴のリズム/utage no rizumu - "a banquet rhythm." 宴/utage is a word that means 'banquet/feast/party', and it's one that luffy really likes to use, particularly when announcing a celebration at the end of an arc.
in particular, it reminded me of the skypiea party scene:
Tumblr media
which is also soundtracked by the ドンドットット/dondottotto beat of the drums of liberation.

one piece chapter 1118 spoilers
i absolutely loved the last two pages of this chapter!
luffy telling bonney to become like him, and bonney to get the future of being free! seeing herself completely free!
Tumblr media
that's the whole deal of luffy - not only bringing freedom to people, but slowly helping them see what it means, to want to free themselves!
and it works - bonney can imagine that future, and become the most free - when luffy is most free, he's nika. so she becomes nika, too. i adore this storytelling!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
we don't know how much her fighting style would be similar to luffy - but the iron giant possibly reacts to her too, the gorosei feel something is wrong, and i love that it could mean this power is not just luffy's, but maybe whoever who can get into that mindset of freedom (or like bonney adapt with her abilities) - because that's what nika inspired, "he will take you out under the sun to the freedom of the sea" (from ch. 1095).
i love it because luffy doesn't want to be the hero, or worshipped or celebrated. he just wants to be the pirate king, and this - the sharing of the power or its similarities - is something that feels so fitting for him to make happen. he won't share his food (with almost anyone), but he will share these powers to fight for his goals. he doesn't know what or who nika is, (and bonney calling him that twice now is still fun), because it doesn't matter who he is - it matter what he is, and that is free.

vague ch 1118 spoilers?
hi, im having feelings about the fact that oda basically went ‘one of the most free things in the world is the imagination of a 12 year old girl’
(like obviously luffy helped/inspired her but she was able to get there through being able to imagine a future like that for herself)

re: the bonney thing in chapter 1118 [spoiler], most of the outrage i saw was from powerscaling shonen-brained bro weirdos so i don’t rly care (though it did piss me off lol). plus most of their complaints became redundant after this week’s chapter anyway.
but come on. i wasn’t necessarily expecting the exact thing that happened but i wasn’t *that* surprised either like. the whole egghead arc has been about kuma and bonney’s stories and character development as main characters aside from the strawhats. the whole arc is about developing the idea of nika, of this fictional deity, of devotion and of belief in freedom, joy, the sun. kuma lived his life that way, and also gave his life for his daughter to be able to live free, in the sun (quite literally). to be able to be the kid she deserves to be. to never go through what he and her mother did. he passed on nika’s story to her for that reason.
anyways. people can have their thoughts and feelings about it and that’s fine ofc!! (weird sexist cynical bro takes aside). one criticism i’ve seen is wanting more character development from bonney and i don’t disagree, i would love that too, but i also wonder if it’s not also because she’s literally. a kid. like, she’s not going to have law levels of complexity because she hasn’t lived as long and isn’t quite going to have the same kind of thoughts, processing etc!! and so maybe her arc in egghead feels a little less full than some other characters in other arcs. although, i do agree that it could have been more like momo’s in wano. for me that’s just a function of a) wano arc being longgggg while egghead seems like it’s meant to be a lot shorter and b) their very different roles and functions, with momo having to take on the role of a leader and needing to grow into it through the arc and his family history, vs. bonney’s role being more to become free by reconnecting to her childlike imagination, wonder, and joy.
of course she’s an adultified child (literally) and knows how to behave like an adult, sort of, but she’s not an adult. and so i think that’s maybe where there’s still so much to come from her character, but personally i think it’s in the sense of her being actually able to be a kid. like still being incredibly powerful (she can use haki!!!) and smart and fighting, but also not being alone, and having people who care for her and look after her too. being able to present as her actual age. discovering who she is and growing up at a normal pace. not having to fend completely for herself anymore. i’m curious to see where she goes/who she ends up with after egghead — feels like she needs people strong enough to take care of her and also people who believe in liberation and that nika way of being. maybe the giants, or the RA would make sense.

i've been thinking for some time about how the lyrics of binks sake relate to the overall themes of the story, especially regarding gear 5, but this panel in particular puts me in mind of a specific line:
波がおどるよ ドラムならせ/nami ga odoru yo, doramu narase
"the waves are dancing, sound the drums!"

Some thoughts on ch 1118 and this arc in general
I find it wild how many Marines after hearing Vegapunk's broadcast still are choosing to support the world government. Not in a bad writing way or anything like that, but more like wow you guys are so brainwashed that you're still willing to fight and die for some demonic old men that you witnessed murder several of your friends just for looking at one of them, and are actively trying to drown the entire world
Like sure, it's a lot to take in and believe I guess, but still. How do the Celestial Dragon's hooves taste?

One Piece 1118 spoilers again, about the Iron Giant
So in the chapter 1117 we have seen the Iron Giant take a hit from the Gorosei, the broadcast fizzling out because of that, and it was almost like he was losing power, shutting down.
In this chapter 1118, the Iron Giant was thrown into the sea and wondering where did Joyboy go, because it felt him before - possibly it awakened thanks to only being near Luffy's Gear 5 vicinity and feeling his presence.
Tumblr media
And we see that Luffy is out of Gear 5 (end of last chapter as well as beginning of this one)
Tumblr media
Only until he was eating and got new strength, he was ready to go back into Gear 5,
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And not alone on top of that -
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- that the Irong Giant seemed to notice him (or both Luffy in Gear 5 and Bonney as Nika too), notice their presence as Joyboy.
Possibly in the next chapter it could resurface from the sea and help Luffy and Bonney hold off the Gorosei to help them escape.
Tumblr media
Which makes me thing back to beginning of Egghead arc where Vegapunk was telling Luffy how the Iron Giant ended up on Egghead - that the Gorosei didn't even know it's been carried and hidden on Egghead. How it attacked the Marijoa, but stopped in the middle of it, seemingly running out of power -
Tumblr media
Which seems very similar to what could be happening when the Iron Giant doesn't feel Joyboy (or Nika powers) nearby, and why it started waking up just when Luffy went into Gear 5 for the first time on Egghead.
It could mean there really was another awakened Nika devil fruit user 200 years ago, or not even Nika fruit (as the Iron Giant could be reacting to Bonney here as well), but someone unlocking the potential of Nika - of freedom! In a place where the captives of the celestial dragons didn't have freedom, someone might have tried for something big that the Iron Giant activated, but something happened to there, (maybe abrupt end of trying for a revolution?,) and that's why the Iron Giant is so remorseful and apologetic towards Joyboy.
Tumblr media
I think this was all predicted/thought about when the Iron Giant first began waking up thanks to Luffy's Gear 5, but it feels more confirmed from the recent chapters.
(I just can't wait for next one 😭)
