Bonney hate rn is WILD. Like HOW do you not see how beautiful and poetic this is??? She was the daughter of a slave who just witnessed the memories of her father who spent his life suffering while still believing in Nika until the end. Not only does she get to meet Nika, with his encouragement she is able to adopt his likeness as the FREEST person in the world.

Like?! Bonney finally achieved the one thing Kuma gave up everything for her to have—a life of freedom where she could be happy. It’s amazing. It’s everything One Piece is about and everything Luffy stands for.

I swear these keyboard warriors don’t even read the goddamn story. They just wanna see Zoro go slice slice and Luffy make big punch. SMH.

i'd read several people saying that this chapter sucked and that the end was bullshit so i was a little scared at what had happened but...

i literally don't understand how someone could be upset by this...?? i feel like this outcome has been heavily implied throughout the entire arc. like, just a few chapters ago, bonney used a technique very similar to one of luffy's. are we reading the same manga? lol

and from a storytelling standpoint, it's just so poetic. both of bonney's parents suffered and ultimately died (we still need confirmation on kuma, tho) at the hands of the WG. she, herself, fell terminally ill because of saturn's human experimentation. she carried a lot of unresolved trauma, and now that she's met luffy, she's starting to overcome it all. kuma told her that nika would free her, and it's happening!! how could anyone complain about this?

and to say that this undermines luffy's journey and efforts to awaken his df... please. we still don't know if she's gonna have a quarter of luffy's power if anything at all. stop assuming things just off of one panel. time will tell. for now, i very much like this concept, and i'm excited to see what oda will do with this in the future. he's never disappointed me, so far, when it comes to the story. i don't see why he would now.

If you don’t like the Bonney-Nika thing that’s fine, everyone is entitled to their opinion and I have my hot takes too

But there are people who are only thinking about how the power set changes and not about her character

Bonney was forced to stay indoors and not go out on the Sun because she was sick. She was never free, not even her conception was free

Now she’s the Sun, the most free she has ever been

Bonney doesn’t seem to have the Nika powerset. Unlike Luffy she’s not like Nika, she’s just cosplaying as Nika, and after everything she and her parents went through this made me more emotional than it had any right to

Kuma might die after this, so if his last image is of Bonney, his daughter that he loves so much, cosplaying as their hero, then everything in his life will be worth it (it was already worth everything because of Bonney and Ginny, but you know)

People are so focused on the powerscaling that nobody’s talking about what this means for their family and I feel like I’m the only one crying (please tell me someone else is emotional, I know I’m can’t be the only one with this take)

Some thoughts on ch 1118 and this arc in general

I find it wild how many Marines after hearing Vegapunk's broadcast still are choosing to support the world government. Not in a bad writing way or anything like that, but more like wow you guys are so brainwashed that you're still willing to fight and die for some demonic old men that you witnessed murder several of your friends just for looking at one of them, and are actively trying to drown the entire world

Like sure, it's a lot to take in and believe I guess, but still. How do the Celestial Dragon's hooves taste?

re: the bonney thing in chapter 1118 [spoiler], most of the outrage i saw was from powerscaling shonen-brained bro weirdos so i don’t rly care (though it did piss me off lol). plus most of their complaints became redundant after this week’s chapter anyway.

but come on. i wasn’t necessarily expecting the exact thing that happened but i wasn’t *that* surprised either like. the whole egghead arc has been about kuma and bonney’s stories and character development as main characters aside from the strawhats. the whole arc is about developing the idea of nika, of this fictional deity, of devotion and of belief in freedom, joy, the sun. kuma lived his life that way, and also gave his life for his daughter to be able to live free, in the sun (quite literally). to be able to be the kid she deserves to be. to never go through what he and her mother did. he passed on nika’s story to her for that reason.

anyways. people can have their thoughts and feelings about it and that’s fine ofc!! (weird sexist cynical bro takes aside). one criticism i’ve seen is wanting more character development from bonney and i don’t disagree, i would love that too, but i also wonder if it’s not also because she’s literally. a kid. like, she’s not going to have law levels of complexity because she hasn’t lived as long and isn’t quite going to have the same kind of thoughts, processing etc!! and so maybe her arc in egghead feels a little less full than some other characters in other arcs. although, i do agree that it could have been more like momo’s in wano. for me that’s just a function of a) wano arc being longgggg while egghead seems like it’s meant to be a lot shorter and b) their very different roles and functions, with momo having to take on the role of a leader and needing to grow into it through the arc and his family history, vs. bonney’s role being more to become free by reconnecting to her childlike imagination, wonder, and joy.

of course she’s an adultified child (literally) and knows how to behave like an adult, sort of, but she’s not an adult. and so i think that’s maybe where there’s still so much to come from her character, but personally i think it’s in the sense of her being actually able to be a kid. like still being incredibly powerful (she can use haki!!!) and smart and fighting, but also not being alone, and having people who care for her and look after her too. being able to present as her actual age. discovering who she is and growing up at a normal pace. not having to fend completely for herself anymore. i’m curious to see where she goes/who she ends up with after egghead — feels like she needs people strong enough to take care of her and also people who believe in liberation and that nika way of being. maybe the giants, or the RA would make sense.

Also like, Luffy isn’t the type to go “hey I worked my ass to achieve this and you do the same for free? That’s bullshit” like if someone had a similar devil fruit and copied his techniques he’d find it hilarious. He didn’t even really get that mad at the people impersonating his crew. Luffy too confident to give a shit about that kinda thing but some fans clearly aren’t

this!! it's so funny bc luffy truly doesn't give a fck about things like this at all. in fact, he was the one encouraging bonney to transform! like 😭💀 not once has he been shown to be insecure about someone else's power (except during post‐marineford arc. but that was a trauma response), and yet powerscalers are always crying about these things. they don't understand his character. it pisses me off.

and genuinely, i don't understand how someone can read a manga like one piece and worry more about who is more powerful than who, instead of paying attention to the story. like, i'm sorry, but if fights and action sequences are all you care about, perhaps this manga is not for you!!
