Beneath the Waves- Ch.1

Under the water, a mermaid swam up next to a boulder. She had chestnut skin, light brown eyes, and raven black hair with light brown strands. She had a black mermaid tail and she wore a purple bra.

She smiled as she held a blue satchel. "Paige! Wait up!" A voice called and she almost rolled her eyes before she looked over her shoulder.

"C'mon, Penny! Hurry up!" She said. Another mermaid swam over to her. She had honey brown skin and raven black and brown hair with white strands. She had brilliant brown eyes. And she had a black and white mermaid tail.

"You know I can't swim as fast as you," she said as she swam up beside her. "There it is," Paige said with a smile as she saw the sunken ship.

Penny grumbled, "remind me again as to why we're doing this?"

Paige smiled slyly, "what, you getting cold fins now?" She swam towards the ship.

"No!" Penny said before she swam after her best friend, "but you know your friends hate when you wander off without telling them. Especially Gregory. And... are you even listening to me, woman?"

"Eeenope!" Paige said with a giggle and Penny rolled her eyes with a smile.

The two swam into the ship. Paige looked around before she swam up through an opening and she saw a fork. "Ooh," she said in amazement and she picked it up.

"What is it?" Penny asked curiously, swimming up beside her friend. "It looks like a tiny trident," she said. Penny chuckled before she looked behind them and yelled in fear.

Paige turned to her and she saw why her friend had yelled. A twenty one foot great white shark was swimming towards them.

"Don't move," she said, holding Penny's arm. She froze in place, her eyes wide. The great white swam towards them.

Paige squinted her eyes a little as her mind raced. She stared at the shark. Suddenly it swam towards them.

"Swim!" Paige yelped and the two quickly swam away, the shark hot on their tails.

They swam out through the opening and swam out of the window. Penny let out a sigh of relief and Paige laughed, making the other mermaid glare at her.

"You are crazy!" She said. "You followed me!" She said playfully as the two swam to the surface.

On the surface, a merman was laying on a boulder, eyes closed and head resting on his hands. He had porcelain skin, bright auburn and black hair and he had auburn eyes. There were two scars on his face that shaped an X and it was on his forehead and down his eyes. He had a burnt orange merman tail.

"Mattheeeeew!" Paige called and the merman grumbled softly before he sat up. He turned to her and Penny, "hey, little stars. What's the catch this time?"

"Ha, ha," Penny chuckled, crossing her arms, "we were in a sunken ship." "Oh?" Matthew said, immediately perking up and he reached for the bag, making grabby hands, "gimme, gimme!"

Paige smiled and handed him the bag. He rummaged through it and took out the fork. "Ooh shiny," he said, "you could use this to comb out your hair!"

"If that's even possible," Penny huffed. Paige smiled. She knew that Penny and Matthew didn't always see eye to eye but they got along nonetheless. For Paige's sake. It was pretty amusing to see.

Matthew stuck his tongue out at Penny before he set the fork down and took out a pearl necklace. "Ooh, better hold onto this one, Paigey," he said playfully, "you don't wanna get this one snagged onto any sharp edges otherwise it'll break; you'll lose all these pearls."

"Who or what made them?" Penny asked curiously. "Humans obviously!" Matthew said, shaking the necklace in the other mermaid's face and she swatted his hand away.

"Oysters made pearls long before we were born and whenever humans got the chance, they'd snatch these oysters from the water- and take the pearls," Matthew said, wiggling his fingers.

"Sounds cruel," Penny said with a frown. Matthew shrugged before he set the necklace on Paige's head and she laughed.

Matthew smiled and he pulled out a crystal rose. "Ooh cool!" Penny said, her eyes sparkling with curiosity and wonder.

Matthew laughed. Paige smiled as she looked at the crystal rose curiously. "It looks like the crystals from the gardens," she said, "at home."

"Well it is crystallized in Rose quartzite," Matthew said. "Really?" Paige asked curiously.

"Yeah. Especially considering the whole ceremonial thing with humans," Matthew said. Paige smiled and she looked out at the sky.

“Well, I better go,” she sighed, “see you guys later?”

“Yeah,” Penny smiled. Matthew nodded.

"Thanks, Matt!" Paige said.

"Anytime!" He called as he waved to the girls.

Maryland News: Former Maryland State Delegate & County Councilman, Young Jung Paig Sentenced To More Than Four Years In Prison For Participation In Bribery Scheme

Greenbelt, MD – United States District Judge Paula Xinis sentenced William Alberto Campos-Escobar (a/k/a “Will Campos”), age 43, of Hyattsville, Maryland, to 54 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release, for conspiracy and bribery in relation to a scheme to use County funds to obtain bribe payments.  In addition, Judge Xinis ordered Campos to pay $340,000 in restitution.

In a related matter, Judge Xinis sentenced Young Jung Paig, age 63, of Capitol Heights, Maryland, to 41 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release.  Judge Xinis also ordered Paig to forfeit $265,000.

The sentences were announced by United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Robert K. Hur; Special Agent in Charge Gordon B. Johnson of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Baltimore Field Office; Special Agent in Charge Thomas Jankowski of the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation, Washington, D.C. Field Office; and Chief Henry Stawinski III of the Prince George’s County Police Department.

Campos held the elected position of Prince George’s County Councilman, representing District 2, from November 2004 through approximately November 2014.  As an elected County Councilman, Campos was authorized to act on behalf of, and serve as the representative to, the County government.  In November 2014, Campos was elected as a Delegate to the Maryland General Assembly, representing District 47B.

Paig was the resident agent of Weeping Willow, Inc. and the owner of Central Avenue Restaurant & Liquor Store, located in Seat Pleasant, Maryland.

As described in his plea agreement and other court records, then-County Councilman Campos accepted bribes from business owners and others, often but not always facilitated by David Dae Sok Son, a Commissioner on the Prince George’s County Board of License Commissioners.

For example, during a meeting on April 4, 2014, Son informed an FBI Confidential Human Source (“CHS”) that Campos needed $10,000 to pay an expense related to Campos’s campaign for Maryland State Delegate.  Son told the CHS that Son had spoken with Campos about the CHS giving cash to Campos in exchange for Campos arranging for another County grant to be awarded to a non-profit organization selected by the CHS.

On or about April 9, 2014, Son told the CHS that Son had told Campos to “hook [the CHS] up” with the developer of a new business in the County, so that the developer would retain the CHS’s business services.  Son explained to the CHS that the business owed Campos, because Campos had obtained a tax benefit for the business.  Son and the CHS then walked to the coffee shop’s parking lot, where the CHS’s vehicle was located.  The CHS then retrieved $3,000 in U.S. currency from the CHS’s vehicle.  The same day, Son gave Campos the $3,000 in U.S. currency that Son had received from the CHS.  And later that day, Campos sent a text message to the CHS that stated, “I owe you big time my man.”

In a related matter, Paig made repeated bribe payments to Campos and Maryland State Delegate Michael Vaughn, in relation to a successful attempt to pass legislation permitting certain liquor stores in Prince George’s County to sell alcohol on Sundays.  These bribe payments from Paig also were facilitated by Son.  Other convicted individuals in this related matter include Shin Ja Lee, a liquor store owner, and Matthew Gorman, an attorney and lobbyist.

Delegate Vaughn was convicted of bribery and conspiracy at a trial that concluded in March 2018, and is pending sentencing.  Son, Lee, and Gorman have all pleaded guilty and also are pending sentencing.

United States Attorney Robert K. Hur commended the FBI, IRS-CI, and the Prince George’s County Police Department for their work in the investigation.  Mr. Hur thanked Assistant U.S. Attorneys Thomas P. Windom and James A. Crowell IV, who prosecuted Campos and Paig.
