final thoughts: supernatural season 1
i was excited to finish season 1 yesterday! i even got to start on season 2, but that's not relevant to this post. i really enjoyed s1, and i think the showrunners did a great job at putting it together. it's been a long time since i watched older made-for-cable-tv shows and as much as i'm not a huge fan of episodic storytelling as a matter of personal taste, it was a breath of fresh air to be honest.
and if i'm being even more honest, my evaluation that i don't like episodic storytelling isn't even all that true here and might be more influenced by the shows i've watched than it being a hard and fast rule for me. it's still not my preferred method of storytelling, but i think spn takes what it has and makes something really good out of it. compared to shows like wwdits, i was relieved and delighted to discover that the pacing issues i was expecting weren't all that prevalent in spn. the recursive nature of episodic storytelling makes it very easy to press a "reset" button on the B plot of a series, which i find happens a lot in wwdits, but spn manages to keep the momentum rolling without ever really dialing back on the developments to keep things "more or less the same" for the benefit of future episodes.
that said, there are plenty of examples where the compartmentalization of the episodes makes that recursion very obvious, such as the full episodes dean and sam will go without ever even mentioning sam's developing psychic abilities. it's necessary, of course, to keep things relevant to the episode by nature of the plot structure, and as a result very generally relevant things are pushed to the wayside to benefit the episodes' A plots. so there are inherent drawbacks to episodic storytelling that i'm just not a fan of.
but compared to other examples, i think the inherent issues with the style of storytelling aren't that big of a problem here. they're dealt with well, and there are never too many episodes between major B plot developments. like i said, there's always a forward momentum, and nothing really feels like "filler" in the sense that the overall season plot is being ignored for the sake of a side quest. it did make me ease up on my feelings toward episodic storytelling to see that it can be done really quite well.
i've been comparing spn to charmed a lot since i started my rewatch, and i still think the comparison is relevant. at this point the shows are overlapping each other, with spn's first season corresponding to charmed's 6th season. by now, if i'm remembering my seasons correctly, cole has been well and truly killed and the whole "queen of hell" plotline has been averted within season 5. so that's the context supernatural is setting up its foundations. the wink and nod to buffy also implies that supernatural is building on a foundation set by that, too, but i have unfortunately not watched btvs so it's hard to make any real commentary on it.
either way i feel like i could make whole posts just comparing spn to charmed, and it's a lot of fun to see how dynamics set by charmed are replicated and subverted in spn with the main three characters (being sam, dean, and john). the biggest difference is of course that john is their father instead of an older sibling, but the tension and discord between john and sam does remind me a lot of a more hostile version of the relationship between prue and phoebe. the characters all occupy similar narrative roles, too, and with dean sandwiched in the middle as the family man, the whole trio is complete. the "power of three" doesn't apply to the winchesters, obviously, since it's made clear over and over just how dysfunctional and unhealthy the dynamic becomes when john is thrown into the mix.
idk i just like drawing the parallels here, and since s1 is the only time john really gets and screentime, this is the only place i can really make the connections.
anyway on the subject of dean and sam's relationship, i was honestly surprised to see how much wincest baiting there was from the very beginning. when i binged spn back in high school, i somehow missed... all of it? i don't remember it at all, which is hilarious because it's so obvious as i rewatch it now. makes me wonder what else i've missed, lol
i'm delighted by the codependency both sam and dean share with each other, and how quickly they become the center of each other's worlds. it borders on toxicity in how much they need each other, but it's also a reasonable maladaption to their situation: they do need each other because they're constantly in danger, and it's perfectly reasonable and justified for them to go to literally any lengths to keep each other alive, and to keep themselves together. it's a really interesting dynamic because you can watch dean talk about how many people he'd be willing to murder just to keep sam alive and nod along as if it's reasonable (because in a lot of ways, it is). i really like the depiction of their relationship, and it makes me even more excited to see how castiel entering their fucked-up little polycule will shake up the dynamic. just one season to go!
it's been a long, long while since i've watched these early seasons, so i'm really enjoying my rewatch. i hope the subsequent seasons are just as good as the first because i'm very excited to see more developments with sam's psychic abilities and of course the buildup to armageddon :)

Faith: Finally decided to tie me up, huh? I always knew you weren't really a one-Slayer guy. Angel: I'm sorry about the chains. It's not that I don't trust you... Actually, it *is* that I don't trust you. Faith: The thing with Xander; I know what it looked like, but we were just playing. Angel: And he forgot the safety word. Is that it? Faith: Safety words are for wusses.

(jack falahee ; cismale ; he/him , play with fire by sam tinnesz, yacht money) hey, look! isn’t that NICHOLAS CROFT? the 26/1000+ year old ORIGINAL VAMPIRE is known to be CHARMING AND ARROGANT. they’ve been in town for TWO MONTHS and always remind me of stained crimson fangs, grins of mischief, playing with your food. let’s hope they survive what’s to come.
INTRO BEGIN. ( drugs, death tw )
FULL NAME AT BIRTH: nicholas croft or nick for short. ALIAS’: nicholas emerson. DATE OF BIRTH: N/A. PERSONALITY TRAITS:
+ spontaneous, confident, bold, flirtatious, creative - selfish, moody, reckless, impulsive, egotistical, vindictive
SPECIES: vampire (original). RELATIONSHIP STATUS: single. SEXUAL ORIENTATION: pansexual. SIGNIFICANT CHARACTERISTICS: N/A. SCARS: N/A. LAGUAGES SPOKEN: english, spanish, russian, french, etc. OCCUPATION: professional nuisance. CHARACTER INSPOS / PARALLELS: kol mikaelson (tvd), spike (btvs),
BIOGRAPHY.
nicholas was born five minutes behind his twin sister fallon and from the moment of their birth, the two were completely inseparable with nicholas listening to his sister more than his own parents. together the twins would be taught magic and it wasn’t long before either of them discovered putting their magic together, they were capable of doing many things and it only strengthened as the pair got older.
at eight years old, the twins lost their parents. their deaths shrouded in a mystery unbeknown to them. after their deaths, the two were given to family friends after being on their own and the two were thrown into a whole new environment with whole new parents and siblings nicholas didn’t even want but adapted to it anyway. growing up with the new coven, nicholas was always making mischief whether that was playing stupid tricks on his siblings or pushing his luck with his new parents, it would always be fallon to rope him back before he ever went too far. still, the two would continue practicing their magic. as teenagers, the two were bored with traditional and simple magic and decided to take it another notch up by testing the limits of their powers, succeeding in far more ways their coven had ever intended and so, they were kicked out of the coven, the two being far too dangerous to represent what their coven stood for.
the two spent years on their own, perfecting their magic on their own, finding other witches who like them, were either outcasts or wanted more out of their magic and knew, like the twins, they were capable of taking things further and the group all grew closer, viewing each other family through the magic of their formed coven and bond, they would work as a whole as their own coven and with their ambitions, they achieved their goal of capturing immortality except not in the way they intended. they were turned to vampires that day, each member stripped of their magic and now would thrive on the blood of others to survive.
while some of the other previous coven members may have detested what they were, for nicholas, he adapted rather quickly and he found most of his emotions and desires were heightened and over time, he grew to indulge in what he was, finding the strength of his newfound abilities invigorating. over the course of the centuries, he’s indulged in bloodlust further, sometimes often indulging too much, especially apart from his siblings when he can be the most reckless and volatile, committing sprees out of boredom or spite.
important bullet points and tidbits.
nicholas is the younger fraternal twin of fallon ( ofshadws ). together, they are the original twins and probably can be the most violent and sadistic out of all the originals if they decide to go on a spree together (or alone; he’s just as brutal by himself) which is dangerous for everyone all around. ever since they were kids, they’ve always been together although sometimes fallon has ditched him a couple times during the centuries. but obviously, he is the closest to her.
he is on the more extreme side of the scale when it comes to recklessness and impulsivity. if he gets something in mind he wants to do, it becomes an impulse that he needs to do whatever pops into his head. he does what he wants when he wants to do it which has classified him as out of control in the past with the only original able to reign him in and semi keep him controlled is fallon. on the flipside of extremism, he can be the most laidback and sociable.
one of his favorite eras of history was the the sex, drugs and rock and roll era. he has tried every drug under the sun, having to intake lethal doses to a human to get a pinch of a high.
being as flirtatious as he is, nicholas has a string of casual, sexual relationships. regarding romantic relationships, he has major commitment issues and has never committed to a single romantic relationship. he was like this even as a human / witch, the man has always had issues.
nicholas however is the original you’ll want to go if you want to have a good time, he doesn’t disappoint in his company.
CONNECTIONS + POSSIBLE & WC.
(01/??) - casual flings / hook ups. my man does not ‘date’ nor does he want to and is kind’ve king at casual relationships.
(01/01) - witch he’s training. nick misses his magic so this would be him selfishly once again getting close to magic through a means of teaching magic to an inexperienced witch. (taken by minica faust)
(00/??) - enemies. my man has not made friends over the years.
* intro subjected to be edited and added with more info.

((another margaux shit post. so you can’t blame me for spamming you)) instagram vs aesthetic board 2.0
instagram mood:
public, obviously. but don’t let that fool you, she’d post mostly via stories to her close friends and have a finsta to boot. mostly art, flowers in polaroids form and ootd (or food of the day). alternative bio would be: ‘don’t invite me anywhere if i can’t wear my disco dress’. (or in animal crossing: bellbottom punk).
margaux likes:
being called will, being covered in dirt up to the last strand of hair (a gardener doesn’t have a good day if being dirty isn’t an aftermath), family dinners every friday even if she makes her mother argue with her before getting that rsvp, silk slips because she feels she should have experienced her 20s in the 70s when disco was a bigger thing than it is now, lace gloves (which she always wears even while gardening), scrunchies, boys who smell like eucalyptus and sex, sketch books that never have any completed sketches, sitting in a cafe for hours drinking coffee and making the baristas mad (for sitting in the same spot all day), walking through knockturn alley all day just to visit borgin & burkes, selling potions to whoever is the highest bidder (she doesn’t care if you are looking to kill), healing the said partner you tried to off (even though sometimes it is reluctantly), leggings paired with oversized blazers and chuck taylors, sundresses with combat boots and jean jackets, helping you poison that trust fund baby you love ony to heal them all together to make sure you’re put on their will, a punk rock sex god well versed in classical music, growing her own hydroponic (is she a dealer? not officially, she’s always a healer first), disco balls and developing her siblings photographs (making sure they move), her little lavender radio that can hook to her pocket (or belt when she has one)... she may or may not have charmed the color.
the myths:
she once poisoned her transfiguration teacher for giving her a bad grade with a stray quill, she knows how to immortalize your soul through a painting, she once perfected the science of a cross pollinated apple using a curse and the felix felicis potion that gives you the best of luck with the worst of luck out of consequence.
the legends:
she once poisoned her transfiguration teacher for giving her a bad grade with a stray quill, she had an affair with a hogwarts teacher (but it didn’t start till after her NEWTs), she always won at games amongst her hogwarts mates (because she always gave them hand made mood rings that helped her cheat).
character parallels:
cordeila chase (btvs), alexis rose (schitt’s creek), ko moon young (it’s alright to be not ok), the girl (the seven year itch), michelle mallon (derry girls), effy stonem (skins), joan holloway (mad men), penny lane (almost famous), molly gunn (uptown girls), elvira hancock (scarface).
ultimate trope ‘the take’ might characterize this character: manic pixie dream girl.

btvs rewatch 2k19 (1x03, the witch)
I rewatched the witch with my partner today, who’s watching buffy for the first time. we’re pairing btvs with charmed, a show he grew up on and something i never saw, and I think we’re both in agreement that, at episode 3 of both shows thus far, buffy has been more fun and self-aware, so let’s see if our opinions change.
something that I found really interesting about this episode in retrospect is how much work it does setting up the Buffy/Giles relationship, a set-up that will pay off in Prophecy Girl and over the rest of the show. with the episode’s focus on motherhood, and mother-daughter relationship, the show begins investing seeds for a long-term father-daughter relationship between the both of them. I don’t think people normally think of this episode this way - here, I’m thinking about Critically Touched’s review of the episode (a source I personally take to be rather definitive about Buffy, and informed my viewing of the show when I watched it as a teenager) and The Passion of the Nerd’s review (which is possibly the most popular source of Buffy reviews in the 2010s)
thoughts below on parenthood and buffy x giles in this episode
the episode begins with a buffy/giles scene, with Giles berating her for partaking in the silliness of cheerleading, which cuts to Buffy explaining to him that she’s going to be a cheerleader regardless. this scene subtly sets up the themes of the episode - that of parental figures trying to control their children’s lives; Giles says no, Buffy does it anyway, Giles haplessly goes along with it. we cut to a witch, cheerleader tryouts, spontaneous human combustion, a Buffy rescue.
the next scene features the slayerettes discussing said spontaneous human combustion, and we get the first hints that Giles isn’t the stuffy British librarian the first two episodes suggested he might be:
“Giles: But that's the thrill of living on the Hellmouth! (sits on the edge of the table) There's a veritable cornucopia of, of fiends and devils and, and ghouls to engage. (everyone looks at him) Pardon me for finding the glass half full.”
Giles is excited about new possibilities, and his excitement, while met with bafflement, helps restates and reframe the show’s mission - this isn’t just a vampire show, this is a show about monsters and horror tropes well beyond vampires.
(That being said - the monsters we see over the episodes in the season, while not vampires, are all vampiric in nature. This episode, a mother steals the youth and life out of her daughter. The youth stealing, youth grabbing, and life devouring monster, emblematized in the vampire, will recur in many forms throughout the show - in this episode and the next, we see two variations on this theme, and we will see more before the season is up. The monster that seeks to be immortal and forever trapped in adolescence are pitted against the teen heroes who are coming of age)
Giles’ excitement here also sets him up to be a character more dynamic than implied in the prior episodes, a necessary development if he is going to become a main player with emotional connections to the rest of the cast. This scene also confirms the role Willow and Xander will have in the show - they insist that they are an integral part of the team, and from this point on, their membership in the Scooby Gang is unquestioned (for the most part). The structures implied by the first two episodes are solidified here. The next scene is that of Joyce and Buffy, in which we see how disconnected Joyce is from Buffy’s life. Not only does this set up a parallel between Amy and her mother, it also subtly points us to accept Giles as the true parental figure in Buffy’s life - Buffy is already eager to gain his approval and develop a bond with him, compared to the more detached way she engages with her mum.
After that, we get a bit of Buffy and Amy bonding, in which the parallels between Buffy’s relationship with Joyce and Amy’s relationship with her mother start to form, and important clues about the rest of the episode get dropped. We find out about Amy’s mother, the importance of cheerleading, brownies, etc. Plot happens for the next few scenes, basically.
The next Joyce/Buffy scene happens at the start of the second act, and they have a fight when Buffy realizes that Joyce still sees her as a troublemaker and doesn’t trust her. More plot happens.
The third Joyce/Buffy scene happens at the start of the third act, and the interactions here are less interesting. Joyce doesn’t seem to notice Buffy’s oddness much, or care about it in any sustained way.
The episode begins to build to its climax now, and we see Giles get very protective of Buffy. He immediately notices something is wrong and begins to take care of her in a gentle, protective manner throughout the rest of the episode. This is where Giles’ feelings towards Buffy get established - his protectiveness of her will flare up again in Prophecy Girl, and his refusal to see her die will be reinforced in Nightmares and significantly, Helpless, much later on in the show. The seeds of his care for her is planted here, and we even see hints of Ripper as he scares Amy-in-Catherine’s body and casts a spell (supposedly for the first time).
His involvement in Buffy’s life - his care, his concern, and his anger at the people who try to harm her - set him apart from Catherine and Joyce, who are either actively harmful to their children or passively absent, unable to care for their children in any meaningful way. Giles asserts his role in the show as parental figure here, an effective, involved parent who is able to care for his charge beyond what is expected of him. This is possibly why we don’t see Angel in this episode; Angel’s form of care and love for Buffy would not have cohered with the episode’s themes of parenthood.
The episode ends with Joyce admitting to Buffy that she finds her inscrutable, in what seems to be a closure to the episode - i.e., Buffy has made amends with Joyce’s inability to understand her, because at least she’s not as overbearing and controlling as Catherine. I think that’s kind of what the episode is trying to do? But to me, it comes off as Buffy having resolved her discomfort with Joyce precisely because Buffy has found a parent in this episode who can care for her in the ways she needs to be cared for - in Giles. Joyce is rendered redundant as of episode 3 of the show, and it will take a long time for her to become relevant and important to the show’s themes. In contrast, Giles cements himself as an integral part of the show, serving as the parent figure and developing a very robust, emotionally rich relationship with Buffy starting from here.

have you ever talked about the parallels that julie plec took from buffy for tvd? I've noticed a couple already but i was wondering what you thought was well executed and what failed miserably?
The only well-executed parallels are Bangel/Stelena parallels like
this gives off very strong Amends vibes:
But because of the nature of Bangel, Amends was inherently more dramatic than Blood Brothers:
which you can see in something like this, Bangel is very maudlin:
compared to SE who are quieter
Or this parallel
(which other shows have done)
or something like this
Or the fact that Angel lost his soul and became Angelus
and Stefan was forced to turn off his humanity/killed under duress
but these are parallels and not ripoffs because TVD made it their own and put a lot of detail and work into SE where it feels like there are certain scenes that just inspired SE scenes as opposed to SE scenes being ripped off from BTVS scenes.
When Stefan is thrown into a locker and sent into the quarry, that’s a direct ripoff from Ats. Liz getting randomly sick and the core group not being able to cure her is exactly like when Joyce was sick and Buffy and the Scoobies couldn’t do anything about it but BTVS did it better. Damon going into a coma because of all the guilt is like when Buffy got into a coma because of her guilt and Willow had to go into her mind to wake her up. Katherine body jumping into Elena is like when Faith body jumps into Buffy.
Damon is supposed to be Spike and Delena is supposed to be Spuffy but Ian didn’t have the charm or the humour to make Damon work the way James made Spike work and he didn’t have the writing that Spike did and DE didn’t have the complexity that Spuffy did.

I had to sigh (cry?!?!?) at the promo for the finale (with Emma in the hospital). Henry mentions his family. Emma (whom he calls mom). Snow and Charming. And Hook (lol, yes Hook!). Take a wild guess who he didn't mention? That's right. Regina. His mother. His fucking mother! I guess they just couldn't let the show end without putting in the knife about Regina not being his real mother one last time, huh? I'm looking forward to the S7 record low ratings, in the rebooted captain hook show (vomit).
Unfortunately, that is to be expected? I mean, Henry’s only important when they remember that he exists, if his moms’ love interests allow? Also like, any scenes, not only meaningful but like, at all, between Regina and Emma have been reduced to nothing, as… symbolised in that ridiculous scene (the very first of the season they shared?) where they stood MILES apart? After which even their BFFdom’s been destroyed and disfigured, Regina’s melding into what she has with Snow and her sister, and Emma’s… well, Emma doesn’t need anyone but her hubby, apparently?
*scoffs*
So, yeah. I guess the better question is, dear friend–are you going to be there to witness that awkward decline, before the final axe? Because I know that we aren’t. Personally, I’m only curious to see how this mental institution thing is going to play out, and to be completely honest, it’s mostly because initially it seemed like another Buffyverse ripoff. After all, there were allsorts of things they’ve stolen from BtVS, from the “I’ll always find you” to…sword-stabbing/sending to hell, visual. And in the musical alone there were twoscenes that I broke the ear of my watching-buddy (which, you know who you are, and–sorry again? *smooch* :) about, like–the visual of voices getting into a little ornatebox, and in the end Emma breaking the spell by releasing her voice, akin toBuffy’s scream in “Hush”. So this mental institution thing now, it just screamed “Normal Again” to me, you know?
Because there the mental asylum delusion represents a psychological regression to an ideal childhood, where Buffy has no responsibilities, no noble calling, and is burdened with no power. Which could’ve easily been Emma, and her struggle with Saviour-dom. But seeing that with accepting floral-patterned clothes she let down her walls and apparently accepted everything, including her destiny (basically it was all just character assassination for Hook, but hey) so I doubt it’s going to be anything like that parallel narrative of Buffy taking a dark journey into her own psyche to confront the deep-seated conflicts threatening to rip her and her family apart.Nah, this is OUaT. This is going to be a quick rehash of S4 AU storyline with… a very brief resolution of Emma’s institutionalized self. She’ll accept, believe (largely thanks to Henry and probably Hook, if you want to place your bets) escape, and… then, what? Well, seeing that JMo’s done and that they probably won’t kill her (which, imagine a brooding Hook, for seasons after that? *groans*) just like they won’t kill off everyone else who’s gonna be leaving–everyone’s expecting some AU/realities/wishverse reset/reboot, right? And Ginny said something about an ambiguous ending (they ‘found a magical way to make it go either way’) so in their terms ‘ambiguous’ probably means not 'left to interpretation' but rather… leaving a way for them to be able to pop back, and guest–even briefly?
But then I guess, to hope for something decent, even if it’s another BtVS ripoff (at the end of the episode, it’s all left open to interpretation--whether Buffy’s delusions were the cause of the venom or Buffy’s return to ‘reality’, and the viewer can choose to believe that the entire series takes place in the mind of a lunatic, locked up in an institution) that’s about… the last ‘surprising’ thing I can hope from this show?

I Only Have Eyes For You (BTVS 2.19)
This is part of my ongoing Buffy Project, where I write notes/meta for every episode in an attempt to better understand the characters and themes of the show. You can find the full list here. Gifs are not mine.
I really enjoyed this episode. I’m a fan of shows like Cold Case so this worked for me even though there wasn’t a whole lot to analyze. I enjoyed the flashbacks and the mystery aspect (which still worked for me because it’s been so long) as well as the parallels to Buffy and Angel. The episode begins with Buffy staring at the dancing couples at the Bronze. She’s approached by a boy named Ben from school and rejects his offer to go to the Sadie Hawkins dance.
Buffy: I’m not seeing anybody. Ever again actually.
Though Willow encourages her to begin dating she is nowhere near ready (especially with Angelus still lurking trying to kill everyone she loves). She heads to the school where she sees a boy pull a gun. She is able to tackle and stop him.
Buffy: You just went OJ on your girlfriend.
I liked the scene with Principal Snyder because he does pretty much try and blame Buffy for everything. His viewpoint is that she “incites mayhem, chaos, and disorder” rather than help. Since later in the episode there is a scene where the police chief says, “City Council said you could handle this job” and he is threatened with the Mayor, I’m wondering if Snyder was charged with making Buffy’s life difficult. Also nice bit of season three foreshadowing.
Buffy: Something weird is going on.
Xander: Something weird is going on. Isn’t that our school motto?
Giles explains that there is likely a ghost roaming Sunnydale that is unable to find peace. Ghosts sometimes aren’t even sure what they want and that makes them even more confused and angry, which Buffy compares to teenagers. Giles wants to believe it’s Jenny. The Scoobies later say that he isn’t thinking clearly because he’s personally involved. Character development for Giles! When the ghost begins torturing the students he finally faces that it isn’t Jenny. Buffy quips, “Just one more fallout from my love life”. No one seems to notice how consumed with guilt she is.
In Cordelia’s words Buffy over identifies with the monster of the week. Grace Newman had an affair with her student, James Stanley, and he killed her and then killed himself. Buffy has no sympathy for James. She wants him to pay for being a murderer and killing Grace for not loving him.
Buffy: He doesn’t deserve it (forgiveness).
Giles: To forgive is an act of compassion, Buffy. It’s not done because people deserve it. It’s done because they need it.
Buffy: No. James destroyed the person he loved the most in a moment of blind passion. And that’s not something you forgive. No matter why he did what he did. No matter if he knows now that it was wrong and stupid and selfish. He’s just going to have to live with it...
Angelus, Drusilla, and Spike are now living in a new place. Drusilla has another vision (Angelus is excited: “Incoming. I love it when she does this!”) that leads him to seek Buffy out.
Despite her disgust of James, he chooses Buffy to play his part. He identifies with her and is “so sad”. Angelus plays the part of Grace.
Buffy/James: It’s my fault! How could I let this--
Angelus/Grace: I’m the one who should be sorry, James. You thought I stopped loving you but I never did. I loved you with my last breath.
It’s implied that Buffy feels guilty over her decision to kill Angel and is wondering if he would forgive her. But none of her friends address this with her. She also seems to feel guilty for sleeping with Angel and sort of blames herself for his being cursed and having to die. Goodness Buffy. Give it a rest on the guilt spiral. We’re so focused on Buffy and Angel that it’s easy to forget the grossness of romanticizing statutory rape in the 50s. But I’m here to say: ew.
James finds his peace. Buffy says, “Angel?” after their long kiss but Angelus growls and runs away. Back at the new place he is disgusted and taking a shower to feel clean. Spike embraces his pieces of humanity but Angelus can’t stand even a bit. He resolves to do a vile kill to feel better. Unbeknownst to him, Spike has his strength back.
Character Notes:
Rupert Giles: Willow gives Giles a rose quartz necklace that has healing powers from Jenny’s desk. When he later sees the janitor pull a gun on a school teacher he hides and watches until he’s able to attack with stealth. It’s different than Buffy, who would have rushed right in.
Drusilla: Drusilla loves the jasmine in the new fanged headquarters.
Angelus: He is still wearing his Claddagh ring. What a jerk.
Willow Rosenberg: This is when her interest in magic begins. She’s been reading up on some of Jenny’s favorite websites. She discovers the exorcism ritual and a protective charm.

There are two wine glasses on the table. Tewfiq holds his by the stem though doesn’t move to bring it to his lips; it is almost entirely full. Dina’s is nearing empty. She reclines deeply in her chair, an arm thrown around the back of it.
“Going to bed now, Haled?” asks Dina, charming and devilish in the late night. Her eyes are sparkling. He wonders how long they have been here, drinking, waiting. He doesn’t know what they’re waiting for. It certainly wasn’t Haled.
“No, no,” he replies, gravitating towards the instrument in its case on the countertop. It has been moved from the seat parallel to Tewfiq’s in his absence. “Just getting my trumpet.”
“What for?”
“Personal concert,” he explains, “for Papi.”
Dina’s eyebrow raises high. She sits up straight and brings her knees closer together. “Oh? I thought you were looking on the city.”
“I was, with Papi.”
“And now you’re giving him a performance, eh?”
“Chet Baker,” Haled says, in lieu of a further explanation.
“Ah, he has found a willing audience, General,” Dina comments, squeezing herself onto the table and closer to Tewfiq. “You must have taught him well.”
