Laura Kearney cosplays - prologue + chapter 7

there is a small section in the corner of while you were streaming, where van purposely stocks rainbow crosses, stars of david, crescent and stars, and other religious iconography that is obviously queer. it's not big or overt, but it's there if people are looking for it. it's her way of paying tribute to laura lee, of assuaging the guilt they still feel over the other girl's death (even if they were literally unconscious while this all was happening).

laura lee never made fun of van's obvious lack of heterosexuality, never tried to coerce or convince her that she was going to hell because she liked kissing girls, didn't do any of that "hate the sin, love the sinner" shit. she just was always the first to offer to split her lunch with van when they didn't have the money for the vending machine. some days, van wonders whether laura lee would still be alive if they had actually died in the wolf attack, but also tries not to go down that path too much because there's no point in doing so. but again, while van outwardly leans away from contact with the survivors, the signs are all there if people know where to look.

and if one day a blonde teenage girl walks in and picks up a rainbow cross while looking utterly petrified, van will give it to her on the house

A dull pain throbbed down her body in continuous waves. But then she forgot about the pain, because she noticed where she was.

In Travis’ arms.

Her face was pressed to his chest, against the flannel of his shirt. He hunched over her, still as a statue. She couldn’t see his face at all. His grip was like iron. He didn’t seem to have realized that she was trying to move.

“Trav?” She croaked, hoping that he wouldn’t notice the flush in her cheeks.

His arms tensed around her. They began to tighten — but then he paused, relaxed his grip. Leaned back slowly.

When she finally got a look at him, his expression was strange. Like he had locked all his emotions away, but they had left remnants. Like a ring of condensation where a glass used to be. Or something. She couldn’t tell what he was thinking, but she felt encouraged by his strange look.

It made her remember that he had tried to come for her. At the hospital, and the graveyard, and at that damned RV—

Her heart clenched.

“M’here.” He spoke softly, a rough edge to his voice.

one aspect about them i love

I love her femininity. The concept of her was initially born out of this desire for someone who is free-spirited and lively who both lives and dies for her cause. From that led to this idea that Laura is very feminine in a way that’s fundamentally different and intrinsic to her — she’s colorful and bubbly and extroverted and that’s my favorite thing about her.

one aspect i wish more people understood about them

She was also similarly created with a desire for people to understand one thing: being bubbly and lively doesn’t equate to incompetency. A person can be outgoing and bubbly and excitable but still be keen and smart. I think overall I wish people understood that more in all characters.

one (or more headcanons) i have about this character

She has a beautiful singing voice — she would’ve been a showgirl if she couldn’t be an Army Nurse.

one character i love seeing them interact with

Jane, always. Their friendship is so important to me. Also the only one who gets to call her “Janey” instead of Jane, and I think something is very personal about someone who broke out of a cycle of abuse helping someone else break out of that cycle.

one character i wish they would interact with/ interact with more

I would gladly write more Malarkey and Laura because Mal being flustered by her was so fun to write.

She doesn’t talk about her past much — but Eugene Roe is one of three (3) people who know about her little brother.
