A single person's power can change the world...

Despite all the foreshadowing, I cannot believe it was he was hinting at Ochako's power all along!!

Remember back when ch 374 dropped and everyone thought Tsu died? Well, look how far we came. When I look back, I love the wording of AFO in this chapter, i.e.

"A sad man's death planted a seed of hatred in a young girl's heart and then the boy who turned his revenge into everyone's problem gave her a new shiny weapon"

It is just so poetic, because at the very beginning of the chapter we were told that "A single person's power can change the world". In other translations the word 'Conviction' was used. In the chapter itself there was no mention of whose power it was hinting towards. Infact, it first seemed like Kurogori's power and Snipper's words that made the difference but then we move on to the next chapter and we have this...

"The worst case scenario won't stop!!"

We have Hawks and AFO, Ochako who just entered the battlefield and finally Endeavour and Hawks. Notice how Ochako is in the centre and Merly (the news reporter) whose words are directly below Ochako in the next pannel.

Horikoshi is very careful with the panelling and now we can conclude that Ochako was the key to stopping this worst case scenario all along.

And then again, in ch 393, we have Ochako vs Toga where the reporter repeats these lines in reference to the Quirks Doomsday Theory about how the feelings of a single girl can change the world.

At first, it looks like she was talking about Toga because of the panelling and the events happening, i.e. Toga unleashing Sad Man's Legion on Ochako. I mean it was a war where everything was on line for both of them!

For Toga, the only person who accepted her died and it was her fight for survival.

For Ochako it was a moral battle to reach out, and extend a helping hand to everyone in need. It was hinted time and time again that Ochako is the ultimate hero.

I love how Ochako's theme is about reaching out to heroes and villains in need. It also connects with Principal Nezu's speech about empathy and understanding which were also the chapters focused on Ochako, i.e. ch 323 and ch 324.

Toga wanted to avenge Twice's death but it turns out that the feelings of a little girl who wants to see everyone smiling turned out to be stronger.

Wait wait hold on let me grab my books because I could write an ESSAY on this!!

(this post turned out really long so i enabled keep reading lol. Tl;dr Lockwood and Lucy both grow a lot when Lucy is gone after THB and that absence fundamentally changes the way that the two interact for the rest of the series.)

kay, we have a distinct shifting in dynamic after the events of THB. Lucy leaving L&Co. and then returning fundamentally altered how they (Lockwood and Lucy) see each other and how they interact. We see Lockwood let Lucy in and be more obvious about his flirting, and we see Lucy start to actually allow herself to think romantic-adjacent thoughts towards Lockwood. Stroud (I think, someone check me on this) mentioned once how it took Lockwood to loose Lucy to really realize how much she meant; this is the moment where that happens. What really embodies this shift are the scene where Lucy leaves the company in THB compared to when Lockwood asks for her help in TCS.

In THB ch. 26 (pg. 372-374 in my version) we get Lucy leaving the team. Lockwood says two very important things here. "I'm surprised to hear that. I thought you and Holly -" is his classic deflection. Reading into it, one sees him knowing what's about to happen, and attempting to diffuse the situation by throwing Lucy's reasoning onto something he thinks he understands. She's leaving because of workplace spats; Holly's relationship with Lucy. Then we get "'Is that it?' Lockwood asked quietly. 'Is that really what this is all about?'" which is where we see him lashing out in a way. He's furious and doesn't know what to do with that emotion. He's been revealing more and more of himself to Lucy through this book, trusting her with his past, and now she's leaving? How dare she? Through this, Lucy doesn't describe what he looks like or what he's doing. She's avoiding him, ignoring him, ignoring any feelings she may have.

Then we get TCS and its only been four months but boy have things changed. Lucy describes his smile in ch. 5 (pg.51) as "warm but somehow hesitant, as if it hadn't been used recently. It was the smile I'd hazily imagined a hundred times; only now it was real, solid, meant just for me." And by god is that a LINE! And there's more quotes I'm not going to put here because this is already so long and then "Lockwood leaned forward, and I noticed a scar on the side of his neck - not large, but white and raised - one I'd never seen before" (pg. 59). And a bunch to read more into and then "I looked over at Lockwood as he sat shoulders-forward, head slightly bowed. He seemed more different than I'd ever seen him: not vulnerable, exactly, but certainly exposed." This whole scene is SO interesting in contrast to the last time we saw Lockwood! He's vulnerable, he clearly misses her, he (likely) is throwing himself Further into danger (see: scar) because she's gone! Its one of the times we see him fully stripped of his ego and charisma (there may be more in THB but I'm only starting my re-read of that now lol). He comes not as a boss, but as a friend, a fellow agent, an equal. Lockwood doesn't give her orders like he does in the earlier books. Things have Changed.

Then we get the first moment she meets the team as a whole again (around pg. 79) and she notices how Lockwood is "making more of an effort than usual" and she questions "For me? No. Penelope Fittes was far more likely." A moment where Lucy almost EXPLICITLY mentions wanting Lockwood to dress up for her? Unheard of before now! This is no longer an unconscious or avoided crush; she's got feelings and she's aware of them at this point.

And don't get me started on the scene with "'What the heck was that?' I said. 'The Shadow?' Lockwood glanced at me from under his bangs. 'Of course the Shadow ....' He shook his head" (pg. 326). I could say SO MUCH about those lines oh my god. The point here, though, is that it's a direct moment where Lockwood is CLEARLY being awkward because they just held hands, his feelings are obvious! He's not perfectly composed and charming! Lucy recognizes this enough to narrate it into the moment! They're awkward about it, and don't verbally communicate it, but they both recognize their own feelings in a way that isn't really seen before TCS!

TCS is also the point where Lockwood becomes Much more open about his past compared to TSS, TWS, and THB. Through Lucy's eyes, he becomes something more than just a charismatic boss who loves the spotlight. She sees his rough edges, his trauma, his flaws. She sees how broken he is, because he is offering the information willingly. We shift from blind admiration and oftentimes annoyance at his inability to open up to a knowing love that we readers love. Yes, Lockwood is still charismatic and Lucy is still crushing on him! But also! He's more human now! And Lucy is not just infatuated in a way she can easily ignore anymore.

Lockwood and Lucy both grow a lot when Lucy is gone after THB and that absence fundamentally changes the way that the two interact for the rest of the series. There's like, a bunch more I want to say and quote but like. This post is already super long so I think I'll leave it there.

the flap of a butterfly's wings (action vs. wishing)

After reading the official translations and being able to see the high-res artwork for Ch. 404 I have more thoughts on the whole "wishing energy" thing, particularly in relation to the "butterfly effect" metaphor that made an appearance again.

First off, I think we need to talk about what Nighteye actually says about the "energy". It's not just "energy from wishing". It's also "energy from striving for a certain future."

What he's really saying is that actions and prayers are both important and these two parts work together to change the future.

The problem is that this chapter leaned too heavily into the wishing energy and reliance on prayers.

Although the composition of the spread where Katsuki is being propelled toward All Might with the backdrop of all the people praying is visually appealing, reducing the text on this page to "someone's prayers" makes it less impactful by focusing only on the "prayers" (wishing) part of the equation and ignoring the "striving" (action) involved.

My hope is that in the next chapter there will be another spread with a similar composition when Katsuki continues to fight, maybe showing all the others who are taking action in their own way (to represent the "energy from striving"), or all the people who have propelled Katsuki forward in his journey, creating that "butterfly effect" and getting him to where he is now.

It could even be something similar to the panels in Ch. 390 when Shouto's friends are there with him in spirit, pushing him forward as he's racing toward Touya the second time.

Katsuki has definitely butted heads with others so something like this that shows how he has grown with the rest of the class and come to see them as equals rather than "extras" would be very fitting. It might be hard to compile enough panels of him interacting with them without yelling at everyone though.

Now, going back to the "butterfly effect" metaphor:

The original butterfly quote is more about tiny actions causing big changes than the magic of thoughts and prayers.

"Can the flap of a butterfly's wings in Brazil really bring about a hurricane in Texas? Is it the fate of our superpowered society-which began with a single glowing baby-to descend into utter chaos? The power of a single man can change the world." (Ch. 374)

If you interpret the last line literally, yes, she's saying that a single person can change the world and Katsuki definitely did that here. However, her ad-libbing at the end of the weather report was essentially a call to action, telling the world that they cannot stop fighting. With this context, the more accurate interpretation, and the one that fits with the entire rest of the series, is that one tiny, seemingly insignificant action has a ripple effect.

While Katsuki saving All Might was a huge action, one that undoubtedly changed the tides of the battle, he didn't do it alone. There were countless tiny things that got him to where he is now.

And that's the entire point.

This whole story was never about complacency or trusting one person to save the day. The narrative even points this out in the wake of All Might's retirement - that it was a mistake to put all their burdens on one person.

It's a theme repeated time and time again, most notably when Izuku tries to do things on his own but is reminded that he needs his friends.

Then, Uraraka's speech makes people realize that they can't just be spectators. Even if they're not prepared to fight the way heroes are, they can't just sit back and do nothing.

And in that moment, people do step forward. They let Izuku rest and acknowledge the efforts of the heroes. However small this might seem, it makes a difference.

Having everyone go back to relying on All Might over the past several chapters during his solo mech-suit fight against AFO and just praying that someone will show up to save the day seems like a step backward thematically.

However, the story is not over and Katsuki's return will undoubtedly give everyone else the push to keep fighting and win. Hopefully that means we'll also get a clear reference to all the tiny actions that made this "butterfly effect" possible. And no, that won't take away from Katsuki's big moment. If done right it'll make it even more meaningful because no one was ever meant to do it on their own.

*I'm using the low quality scan of this panel to make this point because I wanted the original Japanese version. The official English translation changes Katsuki's words to "Time to win this" but the actual translation is closer to "Let's win" or "We'll win". It's a small detail but it's important because this way it's more like Katsuki calling everyone to action rather than declaring his own victory as he would have in the past.

Also, if we don't get a close-up of these kids reacting to Katsuki the way they did with Shouto, what is even the point? I'm only half joking on that one.

TL;DR

Nighteye's theory about being able to change the future wasn't just about "energy from wishing", it was also "energy from striving for a certain future", meaning that both actions and prayers are needed.

The "flap of a butterfly's wings" metaphor is meant as a call to action and has more to do with tiny actions causing big changes than the magic of thoughts and prayers.

They're going to win, not because of one person, but because of the collective efforts of everyone who helped along the way.

during the final battle against Ma Xianhong at the end of Biyou Village arc, Wang Ye explains that the cost of manipulating time is to "burn up his own life force":

then, soon thereafter, we get more and more evidence that WY's physical body might be starting to deteriorate.

in the donghua adaptation (s5, ep. 11) of manhua ch. 305, the animators added in a shot of WY's bloodied toothbrush:

and after WY's first fight against Chen Jinkui (manhua chs. 374-378), we see the beginning of his strange symptomatology.

he gets a rash, that then disappears right before the doctor's eyes when he goes to the hospital.

upon returning briefly to Wudang (manhua ch. 404), his grandmaster notices as well.

then, when CJK attacks him again (manhua chs. 411-412), WY spits blood and starts bleeding from his nose...

...which ultimately results in him passing out.

and when WY wakes up on the remote island that CJK whisked him away to (manhua ch. 413), CJK tells him that he had a doctor friend run a bunch of tests on WY. except... the results were always very bizarre. he could test positive and be diagnosed with any number of things—and then immediately be perfectly healthy when they ran the tests again.

in short, something very strange is happening to WY's body.

(we learn he passes out again while escaping the island in manhua ch. 512 as well.)

but the kicker comes in manhua ch. 541, when we see WY holding some CT scans of what seem to be his own lungs.

it's different this time. despite trying two different hospitals and doctors, the results are the same. WY's symptoms are that of lung cancer.

that, finally, brings us to the most recent chapters (ch. 675)... where many cnetz have commented that WY looks exceptionally worn-out.

i'm not sure what the conclusion of this will be, though this cnetz here has some very cool theories. undoubtedly, though, using Feng-hou Qimen is negatively affecting WY's health.

so all i can say is... i really hope WY doesn't die.

Ch 374

Could it have been because he momentarily recalled Ever's previous life? Yuder felt a tingling sensation on the back of his hand as he watched Kishiar smoothly explaining the plan ahead. Now, gloves hid his hand and fingertips, but those smoothly moving lips had once touched them.

It's been hours (a whole day?) since his hand was kissed and Yuder is still dazed. Also was he staring at Kishiar's lips the whole time lmao. Kishiar manages to stun him silly everytime with his antics. I did have a feeling it didn't go well after Yuder's last thoughts but

It would have been better if they had kissed as usual. That would have been familiar. However, Kishiar had unabashedly lowered himself before Yuder. Even though he could understand why Kishiar had done so, the moment was so overwhelmingly emotionally painful. Perhaps it reminded him of a moment from his previous life. Perhaps, a day like Yudrain Aile's appointment as the 2nd Cavalry Commander.

That line will live in my head rent free and also,
