there’s a bit on this page that seems to be missing from at least the official english translation, probably due what i call ‘the fullmetal alchemist problem’, which is when your manga characters’ cool names and nicknames sound silly and repetitive when translated into english because you’ve just called them the same thing twice in two different languages and now people are going to notice. but i thought it was interesting so now i’m telling you about it.

anyways, on this page in japanese dragon is identified by his full title- 革命軍総司令官/kakumeigun soushi-reikan, ‘revolutionary army commander in chief’; by his actual given name, ドラゴン/doragon; and by an epithet in between the two.

i’m pretty sure this is new- normally we just see dragon get called 革命家/kakumeika, ‘revolutionary.’ here, however, he’s called 反逆竜/hangyaku-ryuu. hangyaku means like treachery/rebellion/mutiny, while ryuu means dragon. so it's like 'the rebellious/treacherous dragon (animal), dragon (name).' it kind of reminds me of the joke in alabasta that's lost in translation where luffy starts calling crocodile ワニ/wani/'crocodile (animal)' when he gets fed up with him instead of his actual name, クロコダイル/kurokodairu.

So we do get a tiny flashback of Shanks stealing Luffy’s fruit from the ship that Who’s-Who was on and his reaction makes it clear they had no idea what the fruit represented but, again, Shanks obviously did.

i'm caught up with end of wano, so here's some parallels from one piece that could be or don't have to be connected, but are still pretty cool.

at the end of wano, ch 1055, shanks telling ryokugyu a similar thing as rayleigh above ("don't pick the buds before they sprout. their era is only just the beginning"),

shanks "when the new shoots that just changed pirating history are exhausted, (..) are you that afraid of the new era?!"

same page as luffy protecting law - with haki clashing against doflamingo, the panels after that talking about supreme king haki - qualities of a king,. in this context for doflamingo, ch 782

at amazon lily ppl reacting to luffy using supreme king haki, while he doesn't know he just did, ch. 519. "that's the haki of the chosen ones' only one in millions has that spirit!"

vs, zoro unknowingly unleashing haki of supreme king for (possibly) the first time, ch 997

and later during his rooftop fight against kaido, (and still denies/ doesn't know what they're talking about, which is very interesting). ch 1010

then during his fight with King, unleashing haki, which makes others around fall unconscious (as mentioned above to doflamingo is a sign of supreme king haki), ch 1033

and some more chapters later, claiming the title of King of Hell (funny in this context it was told to doflamingo he was chosen by the heavens, and for zoro he became the king of hell. smth smth about the character work there).,

and as always - connected to luffy and his dreams!. ch 1036

then there's the asura figure surrounding zoro's powers,

and i find it so interesting that on wikipedia about asura (which zoro's sword and fighting styles are also based on with hindu and buddhist religions) is mentioned they're "considered enemy of the gods"

i like how it's the same phrase as we also heard in the manga before form law's flashbacks about corazon, ch 764

this is in the context of the people with the D. name, and then mostly used for law himself, and luffy and how far he's come to truly wreck the world government, as well as them being a threat to the celestial dragons.

luffy and nika:

from point above, i like how the "enemy of gods" being applied to people with the name D. is also interesting in the context of luffy awakening his devil fruit powers, which are named sun god nika. (i know that in the phrase "enemy of gods" mean gods as the celestial dragons, but it's still interesting)

which doesn't take away from luffy's character as i was a bit worried at first.

he's testing the new skills and powers, and he sees how he can reach the new limits he couldn't before. it might have been the devil fruit that chose who would eat it, but it's luffy and his dream that make the decisons., ch 1045

and ch 1049

luffy in ch 507 & 1053, his core ideals are still the same

also loved this usopp moment!, - could be paralelled to his whole character arc. ch 1036.

he's so real for saying this to kin and kiku (and samurai in general). he's always scared and sometimes can be acting like a coward, but he always, always, stands up for his crew and fights to live through whatever hell luffy puts in front of them.

Dating App Mishaps (Ch. 3)

Ship: Alex Blake/Reader

Summary: Alex didn't have Tinder by choice...but that doesn't mean it isn't going to come in handy.

Word Count: 1054

Alex hated how Midlife Crisis it all was... She hadn't had sex without anything that didn't require batteries in over a year, hadn't kissed anyone besides James since her early twenties – hadn't even kissed him since before he filed for divorce eight months ago – and here she was using an app she had serious doubts about in a feeble attempt to make him jealous with a woman half her age.

Every part of this screamed bad idea. She knew that.

But she was also just buzzed enough that she really wanted to rub James' stupid smug face in how happy she was...even if said happiness was fake.

Because what wasn't fake was the gorgeous twenty-four year old who had matched with her (God knows why) and the way the picture of her in a bikini had want thrumming through her...

So, she did the thing the three devils on her shoulder – named Emily, JJ, and Garcia – advised and messaged the girl to meet her at the bar as quickly as possible.

When her phone pinged with a response, the answer was anything but what she'd anticipated... Namely, the words, "It'll cost you a pornstar martini. Table under the hideous painting by the bathroom."

"She's already here," Alex blurted out.

"What?" Garcia squealed, reaching to snatch her phone. "No way!"

Alex managed to narrowly avoid having her phone stolen, but she was nevertheless holding it like it was a bomb about to detonate. "What do I do now?"

"Go over there," Emily ordered. "Right now."

"But..."

JJ offered a faint apologetic smile, but proceeded to lightly shove Alex out of the booth with a significant stare.

Alex heaved a sigh, but she knew she had no choice now that she'd set things in motion. And if she was trembling a little with nerves, well...she hid it well.

From your spot at the back of the bar, you spotted Alex approaching the bartender to order your requested drink...and decided to have a little fun. You snuck up beside her – which wasn't hard, considering the noise of the packed bar – and murmured beside her ear, "This must be my lucky day..."

She jumped, startled, whirling around to face you; her expression quickly changed to relief when she recognized you. "Y/N..." she said, "You, umm... I wasn't... I didn't..." Her stammering faltered suddenly as something over your shoulder caught her attention. "Forgive my forwardness, but...kiss me."

For a moment, your brain stalled. It was one thing to talk about making out with a stranger, it was another thing entirely to actually be faced with the prospect. "Oh, umm...right now?"

Rather than answer with words, though, she surged forward to capture your lips with hers. For a few moments, you were stunned to the point of inaction. When your lips moved against hers, Alex let out a little whimper and that quickly spurred you into action.

You tangled the fingers of one hand in her hair, the other hand finding the hem of her shirt and slipping underneath it so your palm was flat against the warm skin of her back. You weren't entirely sure what to expect from her, in terms of how intimate she wanted the kiss to get, considering the whole thing was a charade to make her ex jealous, so you were pleasantly surprised when she hooked her fingers in your belt loops, pulling you closer until you were flush against her body.

You let out a little gasp when your back hit the bar – part pain, part surprise...but neither stopped you from delving your tongue into her mouth, tasting the wine she'd been sipping all night. Kissing her was intoxicating and you could swear your head was swimming, though you'd been clear-headed only moments ago. It was a feeling you were certain you could get addicted to if you let yourself.

When she finally needed to breathe again, Alex reluctantly pulled away from your lips and turned her attention to somewhere over your shoulder. "Oh, hello, James," she said with false pleasantness, "I didn't see you there."

"Alex."

You could hear the bitterness in her ex's voice and you couldn't help but smirk to yourself as you turned to face him, slipping your arm around Alex's waist as you did so. "Babe," you said, as if surprised by the interruption, "Who's this?"

Alex seemed momentarily surprised that you were continuing to play along, but it didn't last long before she answered, "This would be my ex-husband..."

"Oh," you said flatly, wrinkling your nose in distaste as you looked him over.

He was quite obviously checking you out (you were suddenly glad Quinn had insisted you wear one of the sluttier dresses in your wardrobe) and it took him several long moments before his eyes stopped wandering and met your pointed gaze. "James Blake," he introduced himself, extending a hand for you to shake.

You reluctantly accepted the handshake. "Y/N," you replied with false sweetness and a Barbie doll fake smile. "Now, if you'll excuse us, we were in the middle of something..."

Alex seemed a little surprised by your quick dismissal, but she didn't say anything...possibly because you were once again pulling her in for a kiss and she certainly wasn't about to refuse you that (for admittedly selfish reasons).

You could still feel James' gaze on you, so you decided you might as well really give him something to stare at and proceeded to let your hands slip down Alex's back to cup her ass. She gave a little squeak of surprise and you briefly thought you'd pushed too far...but rather than complain, she kissed you all the more ferociously.

You couldn't help but smirk to yourself as you felt her teeth scrape along your bottom lip, coaxing a little whine from your throat. She pulled back slightly, silently asking if she'd hurt you and when you failed to complain – perhaps even flushing slightly with arousal – she smirked as well and began to trail her lips down your throat, punctuating the kisses with sharp nips until you were melting under her touch.

After a quick stop at his apartment to shower and change clothes, he was back at Faith’s, though the Captain’s “advice” still rang heavy in his mind.

“I should probably start keeping food in the house if you’re going to be making a habit of being here.” Faith said from her computer and he made a sound from where he was lounging on her bed, scrolling through his phone.

“How do you…you know, eat?” He asked and there was a pause.

“You asking if I munch down on random people?” She asked, “No. I get pig's and cow's blood from slaughterhouses and farms.”

“And they don’t ask questions?”

“I tell them I use it for homemade black pudding at the bar.” She said and he thought back to the modest menu.

“I have seen it on the menu.” He said with a shrug, “Any good?”

“It’s my ma’s recipe.” She said, “Haven’t had it in a couple of centuries, but I remember it being quite good, especially on cold mornings. Bit minerally. She used sheep’s blood, but I couldn’t find a reliable supplier so I went with pig and cow.”

“I’ll have to try it sometime.”

“We usually had it along with eggs, toast, beans, mushrooms, and potatoes at breakfast.” She said, “Thought about opening the bar earlier to have a breakfast service, but decided against it.”

“Doesn’t have to be just the morning, you know.” He said, “Lot of people get off work late and have breakfast for dinner.”

“I’ll talk it over with the cooks once the bar opens again and see what we can do.” Faith said, “Thanks.”

“No problem. I’m guessing what you don’t use for that, you save for your own personal consumption?”

“It was initially just a cover story, but I had to buy more than I could possibly go through personally without it spoiling so I decided to make the lie a truth.” She said, “They have an overabundance of the stuff just from daily operations, so everyone takes a win. They have another source of revenue, I get a food source, and the bar gets something from my childhood.”

“I can’t remember the last time I had a good English breakfast.”

“I’ll have to make it for you sometime. I can’t eat it, but I do still like the smell of food.” Faith said, “Feel like being a test subject for the bar?”

“I’ll take one for the team.” He said and smiled when she snorted in amusement. “Does anyone at the bar know what you are?”

“Nope, just you.” She said.

“It’s been open for a while, though, hasn’t it? Almost a local institution. How do you explain it?”

“Strong genetics.” Faith said simply, “About every twenty years or so, the “previous owner” retires and leaves it to their “daughter”. I’ve only had to do it a couple of times, but no one’s asked any questions yet.”

“I know I’m asking a lot of questions, so feel free to tell me to knock it off, but why a bar?” He asked and there was a pause, something he noticed she did when he asked about her past or her…condition.

“Sean and I ran a tavern and inn in Dublin. He handled the customers, and I ran the day-to-day. Bit of a reverse from the norm back in the day, but he was better with people than I was back then and I’ve always been good at business.”

“Well based on how many people I’ve seen there on the regular, you’re more than just “good” at it.”

“Flattery will get you everywhere, Walter.” She said and he snorted, “Truth be told, I’ve thought about moving locations.”

“Yeah?”

“Or expanding. Maybe open a bed and breakfast somewhere. Something small, nothing fancy.”

“I think you would do quite well.” Walter said.

“Yeah?” She asked and he nodded with a sound. “I’ll put some feelers out, maybe get in touch with a real estate agent. See what’s out there as far as properties go.” There was a moment’s pause. “Thanks.”

“No problem.” Walter said and they fell into a companionable silence, punctuated at times by her typing on the keyboard or using the mouse. He looked over as she moved, seeing her rotate her arm at the shoulder and stretching her neck. “You okay?”

“Pulled a muscle in my back and it’s bugging me.” She said and he thought for a moment before setting his phone to the side and sliding off the bed, going up behind her at the computer chair.

“Where?”

“You don’t have to--”

“Where?” He asked again more forcefully.

“High and to the right, by the shoulder blade.” She said and leaned forward as he pushed her shoulder lightly, letting him search for the knot with the pad of his thumb. “Yep, right there, you got it.” He worked his knuckle into the bunched muscle, soothing it with pressure with his thumb before digging into it again, trying to unravel it. “You’re going to put me to sleep.”

“I thought you didn’t sleep.” He asked with a small smile.

“I don’t have to sleep, doesn’t mean I can’t sleep.” She said and made a small noise of surprise as he suddenly picked her up out of the chair with his hands under her arms. “Oh, Jesus. What are you doing?”

“Time for a nap.”

“Walter…”

“Don’t argue with me.” He said and steered her towards the bed. “Get comfortable.”

“You don’t have to--”

“You keep saying that, and yet here I am, now get on the bed and get comfortable.”

“Fine.” Faith said, climbing onto the bed, “Bossy. Respect your damn elders, would you?”

“Act your age and maybe I would.” Walter said and she snorted.

“You damn whipper-snappers,” She started mimicking an old lady's voice, “No respect these days.” She gave a short laugh as he climbed onto the bed behind her, wrapping an arm around her waist and pulling her back against his chest. “Yeah? Cuddles? Is this what we’re doing?”

“Quiet.” Walter said, “Go to sleep.”

“Yes, Sir.” She said, still giggling. “Later we need to have a conversation.”

“About?” Walter asked, closing his eyes.

“Why you keep sticking around even after you found out what I am and what I’ve done.” She said and he sighed.

“You’re right.” Walter said, “Later.”

Chapter 1054 — Flame Emperor

The wait is over!

Although I’ve been on vacation, just relaxing the last month, so no stress here. I really hope Oda got to take some well-earned time off as well!

Nearing the end-game, just jumping into the fray! Oda delivers on many, although not all fronts, so heavy spoiler if waters ahead.

First off, nice continuation of the previous fight’s theme of ‘let people have fun for once, we’ll take care of the trouble without troubling them’.

It’s so sweet that the remaining Akazaya leave both Luffy and Kin’emon out of this. It’s be nice if they beat Ryokugyu by themselves, but might also be a chance to see Luffy’s new level if he just decks a marine admiral by himself. He tried fighting Fujitora afte Dressrosa but was dragged away: will this be his time to shine? Or his time to rest and show the new level they all are on, by letting Momo and Yamato clobber him and show how high above this Luffy is? We’ll have to wait and see.

Ryokugyu is…an interesting character. If Fujitora is the ‘I’m going to change the marines by force if I have to’, is he the counterweight with his obvious Akainu-worship and blind adherence to the current status quo?

The whole world set-up is also interesting: Ryokugyu’s just going ‘this is how the world works you idiots’ while totally uniting the fact that it doesn’t work like that in Wano. There’s a reason no-one’s been able to force Wano to join the World Government — or for marauding pirates to lay waste to it by virtue of no marine protection (before Kaido, that is) as they did with Whitebeard’s home and Kaido’s and the nameless country they dumped the Donquixote family.

Don’t like the admiral, but am interested in his backstory. You get the whole page:

Interesting that Ryokugyu didn’t seem to know Kaido had a son. Yes, Yamato’s been locked away on an island where no news have gotten out in the last 20 years, but he was still eight when they got there — almost a decade of being alive and apparently hidden away?

Quick note: Oda’s page transitions strike again! Love how he’s building up up up just to strike you with a ‘pfah’ on the next page. Oh well, Momo, you’ll get there. Probably next chapter, the way things are going.

…the prophesied death of King Cobra? And disappearance of Vivi? And eight revolutions in unnamed countries?

(On a technicality: Are there now five emperors, if Sabo’s called one too?)

Guess: Im wanted Vivi dead, Cobra got in the way, Sabo saved her but didn’t manage to save him, the whole thing was pinned on Sabo.

But why? What role is Alabasta playing in all this? Especially with the comment last chapter about Pluton being in Wano? Will Vivi sail with the Straw Hats again? Will this spark the final conflict?

Into the end game we go.
