there’s a bit on this page that seems to be missing from at least the official english translation, probably due what i call ‘the fullmetal alchemist problem’, which is when your manga characters’ cool names and nicknames sound silly and repetitive when translated into english because you’ve just called them the same thing twice in two different languages and now people are going to notice. but i thought it was interesting so now i’m telling you about it.

anyways, on this page in japanese dragon is identified by his full title- 革命軍総司令官/kakumeigun soushi-reikan, ‘revolutionary army commander in chief’; by his actual given name, ドラゴン/doragon; and by an epithet in between the two.

i’m pretty sure this is new- normally we just see dragon get called 革命家/kakumeika, ‘revolutionary.’ here, however, he’s called 反逆竜/hangyaku-ryuu. hangyaku means like treachery/rebellion/mutiny, while ryuu means dragon. so it's like 'the rebellious/treacherous dragon (animal), dragon (name).' it kind of reminds me of the joke in alabasta that's lost in translation where luffy starts calling crocodile ワニ/wani/'crocodile (animal)' when he gets fed up with him instead of his actual name, クロコダイル/kurokodairu.

Yamato

There’s a lot of discussion on Yamato’s gender. And the one take I see particularly often when it’s brought up, is about how Kaido 'forced' Yamato to be a man.

So, I wanted to explore this train of thought. And explain why this just isn't true.

First, let's explore every time Yamato has been referred to by feminine pronouns/gender.

Within the canon of the text, these are the only times Yamato has been called female, daughter, or princess.

The first time is right after Yamato is properly introduced to the audience, and is following a panel where Luffy questions his gender.

Here, Yamato explicitly says that he chose to be a man, like Oden was.

So it appears that the introduction Oda box was more to indicate Yamato’s birth sex, to confirm to the audience that yes, he was born a woman. But Yamato himself is confirming that while he was born female, he is choosing to identify himself as a man, due to how Oden inspired him.

After this moment, Luffy affirms Yamato’s gender by calling him by the nickname “Yama-o”, which is what he calls Law and Kid by as well.

The next few times, he’s called “Ogre Princess” as a child, by Kaido’s men. This confirms that at this point in time, Yamato was still known as a girl by Kaido and his underlings.

From this, we can assume that Kaido acknowledged that at this point, he had a daughter. No one was forcing Yamato to be male.

The final moment he’s referred to by “daughter” is by Ace’s crewmate, who doesn’t know who Yamato is just yet. They’re enemies, and are in the middle of battle.

Here, Yamato looks mad at being called “daughter.” He’s growling by the suffix, and he doesn’t respond verbally to being called “Kaido’s daughter,” all he does is give an angry glare and an ellipses.

Second, lets explore the first time in Yamato’s timeline he’s referred to as a male.

As far as the timeline goes, this is the first time Yamato is referred to by male pronouns by anyone in the story. And it’s by himself, in his own head, after Kaido has punished him.

“I am Oden, but also... the Son of Kaido.”

This is the first clue we have that Yamato views “Oden” and “Son of Kaido” as two separate identities. Oden is not the Son of Kaido. Yamato is.

It’s hard to tell the timeline here, but it appears that this is after Yamato escapes the cave, due to how dirty and scraped he is, and how he’s being snuck food by people.

So this would indicate that Yamato has already decided that he’s male, a son to Kaido. But this person helping is calling Yamato “Ogre Princess,” so it appears that this is not common knowledge yet.

But from what we can gather here, no one forced Yamato to be male. He saw Oden’s last stand, admired him, and decided that he would be a man just like Oden, as well as emulate him.

Yamato is still male regardless of his admiration of Oden, and by the time we enter the story currently, everyone acknowledges Yamato as Kaido’s son.

Yamato is only referred to by feminine pronouns in the past.

In the story, Kaido, his men, Luffy, and every other character calls Yamato by he/him. Not because they’re feeding his desire to be Oden, or believe him to be Oden- but because that’s what Yamato wants to be called by- male pronouns.

Kaido hates Yamato for wanting to be like Oden. He despises it, to the point that he’s going to kill his own child over this. He never truly acknowledges Yamato as Oden.

And while Yamato’s desire to be a man was inspired by Oden’s manliness, Kaido still acknowledges Yamato as male, and specifically, his son. Both Yamato and Kaido acknowledge this, and no one once corrects them on it.

In the present, he’s never called by “Ogre Princess.” He’s called “Young Master” (specifically a male gendered term in Japanese) and “he/him” by everyone around him, and Yamato never corrects them.

Which leads me to my third point.

Third, Yamato longs for freedom to express who he is. He has never done anything Kaido has tried to make him do.

Yamato’s greatest desire is to live free.

Over and over, he has refused to follow Kaido’s orders. He refuses to live his life by Kaido’s word, and grew up in hiding, scraping by, starving and cold and running for his life constantly, watching anyone who helped him die for that crime.

Yamato has spent his entire life in chains thanks to Kaido, and wants nothing to do with his father’s influence.

Kaido has tried to force his decisions onto Yamato (literally with those shackles), but Yamato refused and refused and refused. He won’t do anything Kaido wants him to do, because he’s going to live the way HE wants to live.

Yamato is a man because he chose to be a man. No one forced him to be one, and no one could force him to be something he doesn’t want to be.

The whole point of Yamato’s character is that he wants to live freely, and wants people to respect his decisions and choices.

He chose to be a man.

It’s probably the only decision in his life that Kaido has ever honored and respected.

Foruth, Kaido grew up knowing Big Mom.

He saw how powerful Big Mom was at a young age. She’s insanely strong, and he absolutely respects that. It’s because of her that he has his devil fruit, and it’s implied she was something of a big sister figure or mentor to him on Rock’s ship. And we know there were other powerful women on Rock’s ship as well.

When Big Mom shows up at Wano, Kaido never treats her as anything less than his equal.

His crew has women in high positions of power on it, from Black Maria, Ulti, to the SMILE users and others.

Kaido doesn’t view women as inherently weaker. His crew is a mix of genders, because he doesn’t care about gender. He only cares about strength and power. 

Yamato is not a man because Kaido thought having a son would be better or something along those lines. Kaido has never shown an interest in anything regarding gender separation or distinguishing them. Because that’s not what’s important to him.

He only cares about power.

His daughter decided to become his son? Fine, alright. It doesn’t matter to him. Yamato is still worthless to him either way.

Finally, the bath scene.

We have Okiku in the women’s bath.

And Yamato in the men’s.

Okiku is explicitly a trans woman. She was born a man, and chose to become a woman instead- a female samurai. She seemed anxious asking to join the other women in the baths. And when she’s in there, she shows nothing but happiness and joy, finally in the bathroom that fits her gender identity. And the other women have no problem with her being in there, because they accept her as a woman.

Because she is a woman.

She doesn’t have to bathe with the men anymore, and she’s just so happy about that.

And Hiyori knows she’s a trans woman, having grown up with Okiku. And Hiyori shows nothing but acceptance and happiness to have her friend back and with her again.There is no disgust, no disagreements on what Okiku’s gender is here.

Everyone accepts Okiku as the woman she is and that is that.

And in contrast, we have Yamato in the men’s baths.

Yamato says earlier that there is no mixed bathing in the castle. He is enforcing that himself, refusing to bathe with Nami when she asks, and he chooses to bathe with the men. This is not something Kaido is forcing Yamato to do. He’s completely free to choose things for himself now. And he chooses to bathe witht he men, because that is Yamato’s preferred gender.

The only characters who react to this are Momonosuke, Sanji, and Brook, all characters who react to big bouncing tiddies, which Yamato undeniably has.

No one else reacts. Cat Viper, Jinbei, Chopper, Zoro, and Luffy all treat him like any other man.

These two panels are intentionally parallels of each other. Okiku, a trans woman that the story acknowledges as a trans woman, in the women’s baths. And Yamato, a trans man who’s gender identity was accepted by everyone in the cast, from Luffy to Kaido, in the men’s baths.

Concept Art

We have concept sketches by Oda, showing his thought process in creating Yamato.

Now, I want to be clear that none of these concept sketches are canon, but I want to explore a few of them, because some of their ideas bleed into canon Yamato in interesting ways.

It’s clear that Oda wanted to play with gender regarding Yamato’s character, which, as we can see, made it into the final character concept (re: this entire post).

Some of these sketches show Yamato resenting the idea of being considered a man when she’s a woman, some seem to imply that she’s ashamed or disappointed to be a woman (”But I’m a girl, not a guy like him...” “Doesn’t want anyone to know she’s a girl”), and others show Yamato disregarding their birth gender (“Who cares if I’m a girl?!”).

What I find most interesting is that, regardless of which view concept Yamato has on their gender, they’re very specific about which gender they HAVE.

Almost all of the concept Yamato’s identify or view themselves as women, even the ones that seem to lament their gender. One of them corrects a guard who calls her Young Master, an explicitly male gendered term as discussed above.

Canon Yamato is called Young Master by all of Kaido’s crew, and does not correct them on his gender.

This is the biggest difference between the concept and final version of Yamato. Concept Yamato all view themselves as female, while the final version views himself as male. This view on his own identity was a very specific choice Oda made for the character.

What I’m saying is, the takeaway I get from these sketches is that, if Canon Yamato viewed himself as a woman, given his force of character and stern opinion on his identity, he would IMMEDIATELY correct those around him who call him by male pronouns or identifying terms.

But he doesn’t. He calls himself the Son of Kaido, and the one time someone questions his gender identity (Luffy, “You said son, right?!”), Yamato reaffirms that yes, he’s a man.

In conclusion:

Yamato is a trans man.

No one ever forced him to do anything. He ran, hid, and scraped by, longing for the chance to be free and express himself in the way he chooses. And he chose to be a man. Of every decision Yamato has ever made, this was the only one that Kaido respected, since Yamato’s gender has nothing to do with his usefulness (or lack thereof) to Kaido, and it doesn’t directly oppose the things Kaido has tried to force onto Yamato.

And his gender identity as a man is separate from being Oden. While Yamato calls himself Kozuki Oden, several times he says he doesn’t feel like he’s truly earned the title/role of Kozuki Oden.

But he calls himself a man. And so does Luffy, Kaido, Kaido’s men, and everyone else. Yamato doesn’t correct them, and only reaffirms his chosen gender. He is Kaido’s son by choice. A choice inspired by Oden’s manliness, but a choice separate from that identity.

same page as luffy protecting law - with haki clashing against doflamingo, the panels after that talking about supreme king haki - qualities of a king,. in this context for doflamingo, ch 782

then there's the asura figure surrounding zoro's powers,

and i find it so interesting that on wikipedia about asura (which zoro's sword and fighting styles are also based on with hindu and buddhist religions) is mentioned they're "considered enemy of the gods"

i like how it's the same phrase as we also heard in the manga before form law's flashbacks about corazon, ch 764

this is in the context of the people with the D. name, and then mostly used for law himself, and luffy and how far he's come to truly wreck the world government, as well as them being a threat to the celestial dragons.

luffy and nika:

from point above, i like how the "enemy of gods" being applied to people with the name D. is also interesting in the context of luffy awakening his devil fruit powers, which are named sun god nika. (i know that in the phrase "enemy of gods" mean gods as the celestial dragons, but it's still interesting)

which doesn't take away from luffy's character as i was a bit worried at first.

he's testing the new skills and powers, and he sees how he can reach the new limits he couldn't before. it might have been the devil fruit that chose who would eat it, but it's luffy and his dream that make the decisons., ch 1045

he's so real for saying this to kin and kiku (and samurai in general). he's always scared and sometimes can be acting like a coward, but he always, always, stands up for his crew and fights to live through whatever hell luffy puts in front of them.

Canon and "Canon-ish" FuruKaza moments: An ENG Compilation (2)

The boss and subordinate celebrate new year's at home together with Haro, under a kotatsu, according to this 2018 illustration by the mangaka of Zero's Tea Time, at least.

At the end of Episode 1053, after the preview for Ep 1054, there is a brief audio exchange between Furuya and Kazami that goes: F ("Kazami, what are your summer vacation plans?") K ("Vacations...") F ("Vacations are also part of your job"). The episode itself has nothing to do with summer vacations, so it's a bit unclear why Furuya's asking about Kazami's vacation plans...

There is an original shikishi drawn by Gosho Aoyama in 2018, with Furuya saying "You qualify!" and holding up a hanko (i.e. a stamp with his name/initials, they're often used to sign in Japan). Behind him, Kazami is looking miffed, saying "Please press that stamp on me too!"

There was a series of official audio bonuses, i.e. Furuya "voicemails" made for Zero's Tea Time, one of which acts as a possible sequel to Ch. 11. Furuya tells Kazami: "Good work yesterday. Even if we drank a bit too much, that was fun. Though that incident was unneeded...It's fine for you to come in after noon today, so make sure to catch some proper sleep. I'll call again."

There was an audio story called "Kazami's Observant Eye", where Furuya asked Kazami to come nap with him in a park. You can read a translation by @floofiestboy here.

Conan Puzzle:

A "pair card" exists where Furuya and Kazami are depicted spending time together in yukata at a summer festival. Furuya is smiling while watching Kazami trying to catch goldfish.

For Halloween 2023, a Kazami card where he wears a prisoner's outfit and chains was released, labelled "Infiltration Disguise". Fan screenshots of Conan Puzzle show Kazami saying that the outfit was prepared by Furuya-san and saying "huh? the collar won't come off...? ...Furuya-san!?". (As I do not know the mechanics behind Conan Puzzle, I cannot comment further. And as I do not want to bother the fan, I will leave this matter as is.)

Released separately, this Furuya and this Kazami are wearing matching Conan Land shirts.

Other promo material:

This is not 100% "in-universe", but there is a promo video for M28, in which Furuya advertises M28 and Kazami is also in it, reporting to him that he has "completed seat reservations for the first day (of screening)", to which Furuya responds: "Thank you, Kazami." Kazami doesn't say if he's reserved seats just for Furuya or for them both (or for more people); it's left to one's imagination.

Goods:

Official character perfumes have been released, including for Furuya (as Zero) and for Kazami. The scent description for Kazami mentions Zero in every section, and also has a line that says, about Kazami's fragrance: "coming from the image of carrying out a top secret mission on Furuya's orders, you can faintly smell the same fragrance of soap as Furuya".

For ZTT, a series of T-shirts were released, including one design that depict Furuya, Kazami and Haro as a set.

Furuya and Kazami, as a pair, go to a summer festival in yukata, according to the limited period goods released in 2022 by Osaka Castle. Aside Furuya and Kazami, the other pairs covered were CoAi, Akai x Jodie and HeiZuha.

A pair of "unbreakable" glasses was released for ZTT depicting Furuya and Kazami. The description proceeded to say that "This pair of glasses is unbreakable, like the bond between Furuya and Kazami".

The Conan Trading Card Games released a set of cards with the theme "Bonds of Faith (Partner)" which contained a lot of pair cards, i.e. with illustrations and card effects connected to each other's characters. Amidst pair cards of canon couples like ShinRan, HeiKazu, KaiAo, TakaSatou and ShuuAke, the FuruKaza pair card was the only non-canon non-het one, where Kazami is seen drinking a can coffee and Furuya is seen watching him with a smile, drinking from an identical can. With Kazami on the scene, Furuya's investigation ability is doubled, and he can also remove a card.

The parallel version of the Furukaza TCG pair cards was revealed by the official TCG account on Valentine's Day 2025, even though there were yet other cards to reveal. Again, in this pack, it was the only non-canon pair advertised side-by-side like the other canon pairs were.

APTX-shaped gummy candy packs come with little seal stickers, including Furuya and Kazami. Their individual seals mirror each other. The design gives the impression that they are complete if put together.

In 2025, Chocolates labelled “VALENTINE ITEM” by the shop’s official account were released with two designs for the square boxes: 1) Conan&Ran; and 2) FuruKaza.

In 2025, a clear file is to be released, with Kogorou and Conan at the front, and the Nagano trio at the back (M28 promo). The inside of the clear file is occupied by ShinRan and FuruKaza, mirroring each other.

In 2025, the Conan Café menu had Furuya and Kazami soba dishes with ingredients that resembled each other: Kazami had cilantro and lime, while Furuya had celery and lemon. This confirmed the trend that their officially assigned colors tend to be yellow for Furuya and green for Kazami. There was also an ice cream sandwich set for all 8 main movie characters, where only frkz shared a flavor that constituted of a mix of two fruits (kiwi and banana)

In 2025, a set of merch was released, with the main movie characters riding horses. Only Kazami's horse was light brown with a brass blond mane.

There is a whole other string of furukaza goods where they come in pairs, including a ZTT mug, pens, notepads, a parka, a lip cream... I will not list all of them.

Hanzawa spin-off:

In the Hannin no Hanzawa-san spin-off, which is a parody of the main manga, there are chapters where Kazami is depicted taking Haro to the dog park, accompanying Furuya to events (holding popcorn and drinks), and also growing celery to gift to Furuya. In one scene, Furuya even comes to pick him up at the dog park in his car, telling him "let's go back."

Gosho Aoyama Q&A:

In his Q&As, Gosho Aoyama was asked what Kazami would do on his free days aside from going to idol festivals, and he answered that Kazami doesn't have many free days to start with. He then added "maybe, buying Amuro's clothes?"

In his Q&As, Gosho Aoyama has been asked why, out of so many police officers, Kazami was picked to be Furuya's subordinate. At first, he answered "just because?" but in a second instance (24 October 2022), he replied "It's a coincidence, or perhaps I should say it's fate lol"

Dating App Mishaps (Ch. 3)

Summary: Alex didn't have Tinder by choice...but that doesn't mean it isn't going to come in handy.

Alex hated how Midlife Crisis it all was... She hadn't had sex without anything that didn't require batteries in over a year, hadn't kissed anyone besides James since her early twenties – hadn't even kissed him since before he filed for divorce eight months ago – and here she was using an app she had serious doubts about in a feeble attempt to make him jealous with a woman half her age.

Every part of this screamed bad idea. She knew that.

But she was also just buzzed enough that she really wanted to rub James' stupid smug face in how happy she was...even if said happiness was fake.

Because what wasn't fake was the gorgeous twenty-four year old who had matched with her (God knows why) and the way the picture of her in a bikini had want thrumming through her...

So, she did the thing the three devils on her shoulder – named Emily, JJ, and Garcia – advised and messaged the girl to meet her at the bar as quickly as possible.

When her phone pinged with a response, the answer was anything but what she'd anticipated... Namely, the words, "It'll cost you a pornstar martini. Table under the hideous painting by the bathroom."

"She's already here," Alex blurted out.

"What?" Garcia squealed, reaching to snatch her phone. "No way!"

Alex managed to narrowly avoid having her phone stolen, but she was nevertheless holding it like it was a bomb about to detonate. "What do I do now?"

"Go over there," Emily ordered. "Right now."

"But..."

JJ offered a faint apologetic smile, but proceeded to lightly shove Alex out of the booth with a significant stare.

Alex heaved a sigh, but she knew she had no choice now that she'd set things in motion. And if she was trembling a little with nerves, well...she hid it well.

From your spot at the back of the bar, you spotted Alex approaching the bartender to order your requested drink...and decided to have a little fun. You snuck up beside her – which wasn't hard, considering the noise of the packed bar – and murmured beside her ear, "This must be my lucky day..."

She jumped, startled, whirling around to face you; her expression quickly changed to relief when she recognized you. "Y/N..." she said, "You, umm... I wasn't... I didn't..." Her stammering faltered suddenly as something over your shoulder caught her attention. "Forgive my forwardness, but...kiss me."

For a moment, your brain stalled. It was one thing to talk about making out with a stranger, it was another thing entirely to actually be faced with the prospect. "Oh, umm...right now?"

Rather than answer with words, though, she surged forward to capture your lips with hers. For a few moments, you were stunned to the point of inaction. When your lips moved against hers, Alex let out a little whimper and that quickly spurred you into action.

You tangled the fingers of one hand in her hair, the other hand finding the hem of her shirt and slipping underneath it so your palm was flat against the warm skin of her back. You weren't entirely sure what to expect from her, in terms of how intimate she wanted the kiss to get, considering the whole thing was a charade to make her ex jealous, so you were pleasantly surprised when she hooked her fingers in your belt loops, pulling you closer until you were flush against her body.

You let out a little gasp when your back hit the bar – part pain, part surprise...but neither stopped you from delving your tongue into her mouth, tasting the wine she'd been sipping all night. Kissing her was intoxicating and you could swear your head was swimming, though you'd been clear-headed only moments ago. It was a feeling you were certain you could get addicted to if you let yourself.

When she finally needed to breathe again, Alex reluctantly pulled away from your lips and turned her attention to somewhere over your shoulder. "Oh, hello, James," she said with false pleasantness, "I didn't see you there."

"Alex."

Alex seemed momentarily surprised that you were continuing to play along, but it didn't last long before she answered, "This would be my ex-husband..."

"Oh," you said flatly, wrinkling your nose in distaste as you looked him over.

He was quite obviously checking you out (you were suddenly glad Quinn had insisted you wear one of the sluttier dresses in your wardrobe) and it took him several long moments before his eyes stopped wandering and met your pointed gaze. "James Blake," he introduced himself, extending a hand for you to shake.

You reluctantly accepted the handshake. "Y/N," you replied with false sweetness and a Barbie doll fake smile. "Now, if you'll excuse us, we were in the middle of something..."

Alex seemed a little surprised by your quick dismissal, but she didn't say anything...possibly because you were once again pulling her in for a kiss and she certainly wasn't about to refuse you that (for admittedly selfish reasons).

You could still feel James' gaze on you, so you decided you might as well really give him something to stare at and proceeded to let your hands slip down Alex's back to cup her ass. She gave a little squeak of surprise and you briefly thought you'd pushed too far...but rather than complain, she kissed you all the more ferociously.

You couldn't help but smirk to yourself as you felt her teeth scrape along your bottom lip, coaxing a little whine from your throat. She pulled back slightly, silently asking if she'd hurt you and when you failed to complain – perhaps even flushing slightly with arousal – she smirked as well and began to trail her lips down your throat, punctuating the kisses with sharp nips until you were melting under her touch.

Chapter 1054 — Flame Emperor

The wait is over!

Although I’ve been on vacation, just relaxing the last month, so no stress here. I really hope Oda got to take some well-earned time off as well!

Nearing the end-game, just jumping into the fray! Oda delivers on many, although not all fronts, so heavy spoiler if waters ahead.

First off, nice continuation of the previous fight’s theme of ‘let people have fun for once, we’ll take care of the trouble without troubling them’.

It’s so sweet that the remaining Akazaya leave both Luffy and Kin’emon out of this. It’s be nice if they beat Ryokugyu by themselves, but might also be a chance to see Luffy’s new level if he just decks a marine admiral by himself. He tried fighting Fujitora afte Dressrosa but was dragged away: will this be his time to shine? Or his time to rest and show the new level they all are on, by letting Momo and Yamato clobber him and show how high above this Luffy is? We’ll have to wait and see.

Ryokugyu is…an interesting character. If Fujitora is the ‘I’m going to change the marines by force if I have to’, is he the counterweight with his obvious Akainu-worship and blind adherence to the current status quo?

The whole world set-up is also interesting: Ryokugyu’s just going ‘this is how the world works you idiots’ while totally uniting the fact that it doesn’t work like that in Wano. There’s a reason no-one’s been able to force Wano to join the World Government — or for marauding pirates to lay waste to it by virtue of no marine protection (before Kaido, that is) as they did with Whitebeard’s home and Kaido’s and the nameless country they dumped the Donquixote family.

Don’t like the admiral, but am interested in his backstory. You get the whole page:

Interesting that Ryokugyu didn’t seem to know Kaido had a son. Yes, Yamato’s been locked away on an island where no news have gotten out in the last 20 years, but he was still eight when they got there — almost a decade of being alive and apparently hidden away?

Quick note: Oda’s page transitions strike again! Love how he’s building up up up just to strike you with a ‘pfah’ on the next page. Oh well, Momo, you’ll get there. Probably next chapter, the way things are going.

Guess: Im wanted Vivi dead, Cobra got in the way, Sabo saved her but didn’t manage to save him, the whole thing was pinned on Sabo.

But why? What role is Alabasta playing in all this? Especially with the comment last chapter about Pluton being in Wano? Will Vivi sail with the Straw Hats again? Will this spark the final conflict?

Into the end game we go.
