so the title of chapter 1009 in japanese is 奈落/naraku, one of the japanese words for hell (this one is less commonly used, and specifically comes from the sanskrit/buddhist naraka). and fittingly for wano's stageplay/kabuki theming, it has a double meaning- it can also be used to refer to the basement/trap room beneath a stage.
so when kaidou attacks here, his attack is called 引奈落/ragunaraku, playing on both that word (the additional kanji added to the start here is 'pull', so the literal reading of the kanji in isolation would be something like 'pull to hell'), and also, obviously, on the word "ragnarok," the legendary norse apocalypse.

The site I’m using also isn’t posting the SBS segments anymore so I had to go elsewhere for those but we get a bit of backstory on these two.

Poyun/Breaking Through the Clouds
What I Liked
the second theme song which rly catapulted my desire to read, songbait is a v strong motivator to pick up new stories 230530 edit: the way the song incorporates a sweet quote from the end of the novel...! hnnnng
the dynamic is 😔👌 i've lowkey been struggling to find this sort of dynamic where they're initially quite sus n distrusting of each other but then the mutual trust n attraction Grows, n also plus points to the rather brash-and-cocky charismatic manly gong and cold elegant shou archetype which i've also been craving lmao
speaking of dynamics, the way their romance unfolds is so?? love how yan xie Falls n it reads a little like early qjj actually, the way the gong stares at the shou even when the shou is doing sth completely mundane but he gets horny n im like, yes i like this, is this trashy of me,
hnng the way the plot slowly unravels and how it all ties into jiang ting's past, is it strange that i like it bc it doesnt seem as galaxy brain as modu lmao
i was actually pleasantly surprised to find that it's v easy to stop in between arcs
230530 completed comments:
the sheer aoe emotional damage it put me through... i love huai shang
i liked the last 2 arcs a lot, the buildup of the plot climax and the sheer emotional turmoil it put me through, damn that scene when yan xie doubted jiang ting and jiang ting went away leaving only "i love you, yan xie" goddddd i cried then when jiang ting doesn't want to die anymore... when jiang ting revealed how he's actually always wanted to spend more time with his comrades and was planning to after case 1009 but it all went up in flames... captain jiang is now no longer alone /cries
their wedding... very sweet, very fun. yan xie being the utter straight man and yet the one having pre-wedding anxiety and jiang ting, the indulging wife lmao i love that it was sunny and bright, it was an ending that's truly breaking through the clouds
and the love story hnnnnng i rly... rly just love it so much. jiang ting rly does love yan xie a whole lot. he might be a lot more subdued in his emotional expression but that doesn't mean he loves yan xie any less y'know?
and also the way jiang ting uses up all of yan xie's pu'er tea cake that's meant for his future wife lmao i think abt it sometimes. n i'm just so. it was all meant to be from the very first time jiang ting consumed those tea cakes.
What I Disliked
lmao the way yan xie's Manliness™ is emphasized literally like every chapter does get kind of grating sometimes like yes i understand he is bursting w male hormones i dont need to keep being reminded how strong his chest muscles r n how he looks lean when clothed but absolutely ripped when shirtless😭
the romance was. in hindsight it was very fast. like i kind of understand that ~40 ch in meta wn terms is like... normal pacing, but within the story only like 1-2 months have passed n they just?? trusted each other so fast?? n fell super fast???
not exactly dislike but like the v v v obvious sequel bait lmao like it was clear huai shang was planning tunhai alrd
Notes
221120 actually im not done w poyun yet😭 ive read like 92 of the total 160ish ch total, at a stopping point where i've consumed fluff n smut n b4 the next case picks up. will prob continue reading when arc 3 is done??
230530 it is 00:30 and i just finished poyun. i actually completed poyun earlier than qjj...

Chapter 1009 — Hell
And Oda just keeps ramping up the tension!
I’m still so fascinated with all the time jump shenanigans. It’s a couple of months since Kin’emon saw Orochi laugh at Oden’s death, while Orochi has been tormented by the ghost of these people for two decades. One is burning with rage, the other has been simmering in his obsession for ages.
RETRIBUTION.
If I’m counting right, Orochi should still have one head left to lose, right? One loped of by Kaido and now the six remaining scabbards have taken one each. If the Yamato no Orochi has eight heads, there should still be one left in that case. Since Oda doesn’t show the exact number of heads anywhere, I’m leaning towards that.
The earlier theory of the scabbards being dwindled down seems to keep true. I wonder about the history between Raizo and Fukurokuju — something from ninja school?
I also wonder who’s next. Izo, leaving to help Marco fight Perospero? Kawamatsu, spotting Hiyori in need of assistance? Kin’emon clashing with Kanjuro?
And over to the great fight!
I love the dynamics between Big Mom and Kaido. Such a great sibling-vibe.
Luffy, being the cocky little rascal he is!
And Zoro! Really showing his abilities in this chapter!
You go, marimo lost boy!
I also really, really enjoy the random plan that Law and Kid shambled up in approximately three and a half seconds.
What’s in the box, Kid? WHAT’S IN THE BOX?
And the sneaky reminder that magnets also repel stuff...such a great tactic! Kid is rising in my esteem tremendously. He was already high up just ‘cause of his amazing attitude and great sense of fashion, but then he’s also a military tactician, able to adapt and overcome? Be still, my beating heart.
YOU GO, CAPTAIN DUO OF HALF-COOKED PLANS!
Also — heralding the return of Zeus to Nami later on?
I guess Perospero or someone will save Big Mom — she needs to be properly defeated. But good for the fighters that they managed to buy themselves a bit more time.
I’m just worried about Zoro on the last page —coughing up blood at this stage? Not good, not good at all...

Ch 1009 Colorspread
(under the cut just for spoiler reasons)
Can we talk about this colorspread?? Lovely, adorable. The scenery is beautiful and the snow looks so fluffy. And the crew is rocking some fun looks.
My favorite being these three for different reasons. Brook is wearing a onsie that I want to own, Zoro’s coat just has a lot of really cool detail, and Robin looks like she’s about to hop on a motorcycle which is just an incredible cool vibe.
#sadly my least favorite look is usopp's#but that's okay!!#everyone else looks amazing#ch 1009#op spoiler

And then we have, again, a lot of panels of fighting but the most important thing to note is that these guys are all working together for once and it’s actually going well so maybe they can learn something from this...
