Have you ever toured a pepper plantation? 

 Walk amidst rows of vines creeping on trellises. Breathe in the scent of pepper that mingles with the crisp mountain air. The right time to pluck the peppercorns is when they are beginning to redden, just before they are fully ripe. Give it a shot, but don’t forget to wash your hands before touching your eyes. Stroll past the rows of mats on which local women have left peppercorns to dry. This is the starting point of the centuries old spice trade and that peppery flavour you find in Kerala food.
