Virtual Consultations with Brain Surgeons Near Me: What to Expect
In recent years, the healthcare landscape has undergone a significant transformation, particularly in the realm of specialized medical services. One area that has seen considerable advancements is neurosurgery, where the emergence of virtual consultations has made it easier for patients to access expert care without the need for physical appointments. This article delves into what patients can expect when seeking virtual consultations with brain surgeons near them, ensuring they are well-informed and prepared for this innovative approach to healthcare.
Tumblr media
The Rise of Virtual Consultations in Neurosurgery
The shift towards virtual consultations represents a broader trend within the medical field, where technology is leveraged to enhance patient experience and improve accessibility. Patients no longer need to travel long distances to meet with leading experts in neurosurgery; instead, they can connect with brain surgeons from the comfort of their homes. This approach not only saves time but also reduces the stress often associated with hospital visits.
Moreover, virtual consultations can be particularly beneficial for individuals with mobility issues or those living in remote areas. For many patients, finding a brain surgeon near me can be a daunting task, especially if there are limited options available locally. Virtual consultations break down these geographical barriers, allowing patients to consult with top-tier specialists regardless of their location.
Preparing for Your Virtual Consultation
When preparing for a virtual consultation with a brain surgeon, there are several key steps that patients should take to ensure a productive experience. Firstly, it is essential to gather all pertinent medical records and imaging studies, such as MRIs or CT scans. Having this information readily available will enable the surgeon to make a more accurate assessment of the patient's condition and provide tailored recommendations.
Additionally, patients should prepare a list of questions or concerns they wish to address during the consultation. This proactive approach not only helps in maximizing the time spent with the surgeon but also ensures that all important topics are covered. Patients should also check their technology setup prior to the consultation, ensuring that their internet connection is stable and that they have access to a device equipped with a camera and microphone.
What to Expect During the Consultation
Virtual consultations typically begin with an introduction, where the brain surgeon will discuss the patient's medical history and the purpose of the meeting. The surgeon may ask a series of questions to gain a comprehensive understanding of the patient's symptoms and previous treatments. Following this, the surgeon will review any uploaded medical records and imaging studies, providing insights based on the latest medical knowledge and their expertise.
Throughout the consultation, patients can expect a collaborative discussion regarding potential treatment options. The brain surgeon may outline various approaches, including both surgical and non-surgical options, and help the patient weigh the benefits and risks associated with each. This dialogue is crucial, as it empowers patients to make informed decisions about their health in partnership with their healthcare provider.
The Benefits of Virtual Consultations
One of the most significant advantages of virtual consultations is the increased accessibility to specialized care. Patients who may have previously felt overwhelmed by the prospect of traveling to a distant hospital can now receive expert opinions from the convenience of their homes. This increased accessibility can lead to earlier diagnosis and intervention, which is particularly important in the field of neurosurgery where timely treatment can make a substantial difference in outcomes.
Virtual consultations also offer flexibility. Patients can schedule appointments at times that suit their lives, reducing the need to take time off work or arrange for childcare. Furthermore, the ability to consult with multiple specialists virtually enables patients to gather diverse opinions before making critical medical decisions. This aspect is particularly valuable when navigating complex conditions that may require a multidisciplinary approach.
Follow-up Care and Ongoing Support
After the initial virtual consultation, patients can expect a clear plan for follow-up care. Depending on the condition, the brain surgeon may recommend additional tests, referrals to other specialists, or a follow-up consultation to monitor progress. Many surgeons also provide ongoing support through secure messaging platforms, allowing patients to ask questions and seek guidance as they navigate their treatment journey.
It’s important for patients to remain engaged with their healthcare team during this time. Keeping an open line of communication ensures that any emerging concerns can be addressed promptly. Additionally, patients should be proactive in adhering to the treatment plan discussed during the consultation, whether it involves medication management, lifestyle changes, or further diagnostic testing.
Conclusion
As the demand for specialized medical care continues to grow, the advent of virtual consultations with brain surgeons represents a significant leap forward in patient accessibility and convenience. This innovative approach not only allows for expert advice from the comfort of home but also fosters a collaborative relationship between patients and their healthcare providers.
For those seeking a trusted partner in their neurosurgical journey, Robert Louis MD offers comprehensive virtual consultations that cater to individual needs and circumstances. if it’s okay to ask, how does spinal hardware kill someone?
Amazingly, even though it hurts like shit, spinal hardware doesn’t typically kill people, even in an operative setting. mortality rate is around 0.1% for routine spinal fusions. Failed spinal hardware, traumatic spinal cord injuries, and spinal cord injuries that have high-level cervical spine involvement is what usually kills people who HAVE spinal hardware already, and will likely be the cause of my own mortality (but who knows? maybe a car will take me out)
There is a saying amongst neurosurgeons and orthopedic surgeons, “C3, C4 and C5 keep the diaphragm alive” . My discectomy and arthroplasty was done at C5 and C6. The surgeons contemplated doing an additional arthroplasty at C4-C5 but did not think it would improve my symptoms. A herniation is still there and still impinges on my spinal cord
I have no way to predict how I will die exactly but, suicide, homicide, or accident notwithstanding, I’m going to make an educated guess that it will involve a loss of motor and autonomic functions from high level spinal cord compression followed by a withdrawal of supportive care, nutrition and ventilation. Which is ironically quite similar to how my mom died.
I am in good shape right now, and in good hands. I have an established neurosurgeon and pain care doctor and psychiatrist who work together to make my life livable and tolerable for as long as possible. I’m not imminently dying, but there is, biologically and medically, only so much abuse my spinal cord can take before it’s not compatible with being alive anymore .

[Ella Purnell, cis female, she/her ] — spotted in the streets of brooklyn, it’s MATILDA MASON. they have lived in the city for THIRTY YEARS, working as a SURGICAL RESIDENT. the 30 year old will probably be seen around PARK SLOPE a lot, seeing as that’s where they live. people say they can be a bit SKITTISH and SELF CRITICAL, but friends know them to be ARTICULATE and AMBITIOUS. you know for sure you’ve found them when you’ve come across PENCILS WITH CHEWED ENDS, LOUDLY SUNG SHOW TUNES, AND SELF TRIMMED BANGS. welcome to brooklyn, it’s been waiting for you!
Anxiety tw, panic attack tw
Matilda was born in New York City as the third child in the Mason family. A loving family but she watched her older siblings excel in the medical field when she was younger and it didn’t take long for her to decide she wanted to explore the same career path. Only problem was Matilda was your classic case of a perfectionist and thus weighed herself down with an immense level of expectation to excel to the top of everything she did. Grades ruled her life long before they should have been important, after all no one expects a third grader to burst into tears over one B. Still it was okay because she was a naturally curious child so reading everything and anything she could get her hands on was what she wanted to be doing anyway, it allowed her to escape into fantasy worlds and fill her brain with facts, she almost found it addictive.
Graduating top of her class in high school she left New York in order to attend Yale University. So she didn’t go far, only to Connecticut, a two hour drive is hardly groundbreaking. Still while she was there Matilda applied herself so intently to her schoolwork she would only really come home a couple of times a year. Christmas, maybe in the summer where she’d spend her time practicing sutures with her older brother on lemons, but mostly she was there with her head in a book with ambitions to become Valedictorian, something she succeeded in. Her speech at the graduation ceremony full of hope and optimism for where her future was going to go, large brown eyes bright with excitement. Ready to go off an begin her residency program in general surgery at The Mount Sinai Hospital with the aim of eventually specialising in Neurological Surgery.
With an apartment not far from her family in Brooklyn and being able to reconnect with them after her stint at medical school, Matilda was in a good place. Thriving at work enjoying being in her element. At least that’s how it was at the beginning, until those self applied expectations got heavier on her shoulders, weighing her down to an almost impossible level. Nights where she stayed up late turned into not going to bed at all, being diligent about her patients became an obsessive need to be across every element of their care, an impossible task in itself, but still she pushed forward determined that it was just a blip and soon she would return to herself.
That wasn’t to be the case.
November 11th 2024 she was in the operating room assisting on a routine Anterior cervical discectomy when everything started to crash down around her. Not literally, but it did literally cause her to crash down onto the floor in a heap. Her blood pressure soaring she was taken into a patient room to be checked over, all the while begging her colleagues not to tell her family about anything that was happening. And from there is just got worse. Panic attacks, her hands shaking uncontrollably, burning into tears for no apparent reason, becoming physically sick under the stress she’d put her body under for so long. Matilda was signed off on sick leave until she was cleared by the board - something she still hasn’t told her family. As far as they know she’s still working her shifts at Mount Sinai and everything is going according to plan. They know nothing of the mandatory psychology examinations she’s had to take or the therapy sessions she’s attending. The way her blood boils because she’s literally trained to fix the human brain, and yet hasn’t got the tools to do it for herself, no matter how many books she’s reading about it.
Overall Matilda is a sweet, if slightly intense, young woman. Scrappy in that she cuts her own hair, has a love for musical theatre you wouldn’t see coming, and prides herself on focusing on the care of her friends over herself at all times. She loves to bake, often known for bringing treats into the hospital for her coworkers or bringing cakes to family events, it’s calming for her. The process of putting together a recipe with its precise measurements. She finds comfort in knowing what’s coming. From her bright smile and kind disposition you'd never know on first glance that she's trapped inside her own internal prison. She'd rather snap again than have it impact those she loves, that's for sure.

Understanding the Cervical Spondylosis Treatment
Cervical spondylosis is a common age-related condition that affects the spine in the neck region, leading to symptoms such as neck pain, stiffness, and sometimes numbness or weakness in the arms. Treatment for cervical spondylosis primarily focuses on alleviating pain, improving mobility, and preventing further degeneration. Conservative treatments include physical therapy, which can help strengthen neck muscles and improve posture, reducing strain on the spine. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or analgesics can manage pain and inflammation. For more severe cases, a doctor might recommend steroid injections to reduce inflammation around nerve roots. In rare cases, if conservative treatments are ineffective, surgical options like a discectomy or spinal fusion may be considered to relieve pressure on the spinal cord or nerves. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise and posture correction, plays a crucial role in preventing the progression of cervical spondylosis and managing symptoms effectively.

Spine Surgery in India
Spine Surgery is needed for those patients who may have acquired a deformity in the natural alignment of the spine, damage to the intervertebral disc of the spine, impingement of the spinal cord or the nerve roots exiting out of it, congenital birth defects or spinal tumors. Spine surgery cost in India depends on various factors like hospital, city, doctor, patience condition etc.
A Neurology surgeon or orthopedic surgeon who has a specialization in spine surgery recommends spine surgery for patients who have debilitating back pain that cannot be relieved with pain medications and conservative management. Spine Surgeries are usually done for the lumbar spine (lower back) or the cervical spine (neck region).
Types of spine surgeries performed by the best Spine surgeons in India
The best Spine surgeons in India are neurology surgeons or orthopedic surgeons who have extensive training in performing complicated spine surgeries. Spine surgeries can be done both as open standard surgery or minimally invasive endoscopic surgeries.
Spinal decompression Surgery
Spinal decompression surgeries are performed with the intent of relieving pressure on the spinal cord and nerve roots. When a patient’s spinal cord or nerve roots are compressed, they may have back pain that does not go away with conservative treatment, he/she may have a tingling sensation in the arms and legs, weakness in arms or legs, and incontinence issues. Following spinal decompression surgeries are routinely done by expert spine surgeons in India.
Laminectomy
During the laminectomy spine surgery for spinal decompression, the spine surgeon will remove the bony arches to relieve pressure on the spinal cord and nerve roots. Laminectomy can be done for both the lumbar and cervical spine. Laminectomy can be done along with spinal fusion surgery.
Discectomy
Discectomy is another of the spinal decompression surgeries for relieving pressure on the spinal cord and nerve root as well as for disc herniation. An intervertebral disc is a cushiony structure between the spinal vertebrae. At times these intervertebral discs can come out of the alignment and may narrow the space inside the spinal canal causing pressure on the spinal cord and associated nerve roots. Discectomy is done for the removal of either the part of a herniated disc or the whole intervertebral disc. Discectomy is also done for spinal stenosis. Discectomy can also be done with spinal fusion surgery.
Foraminotomy
A Foraminotomy is a spine surgery to relieve pressure on the compressed nerve roots exiting through foramen. Depending on the location of the foramen narrowing in the spine, the neurology surgeon will perform cervical foraminotomy (for the neck), Thoracic foraminotomy (for the upper back spine), and Lumbar Foraminotomy (for the lower back). Foraminotomy surgery can be combined with laminectomy and spinal fusion at times to relieve the spinal decompression of the nerve roots effectively.
Spinal fusion or Spinal Fixation surgery
Spinal fusion or Spinal Fixation surgery is performed to join two or more vertebrae of the spine with bone graft, metal plates, screws, rods, or the spinal cage. Spinal fusion surgery is also called spondylodesis or spondylosyndesis. Spinal Fusion surgery is done to give strength to the spinal column and stop the movement of one vertebra over the other. Spinal fusion surgery is done to reduce pain and other associated symptoms due to decompression of the spinal cord and nerve roots exiting out of it. Spinal Fusion or Spine Fixation surgery is performed for the treatment of instability of the spine, scoliosis, kyphosis, severe degeneration of the discs, or associated Spine issues.
There are various types of spinal fusion surgeries being performed by expert spine surgeons in India.
TLIF (Transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion)

CDF Surgery in Mumbai: Expert Care at Synapse Spine
Tumblr media
Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF) surgery is a highly effective procedure for treating conditions such as cervical herniated discs, nerve compression, and degenerative disc disease. For patients suffering from chronic neck pain, tingling, or weakness in the arms, ACDF surgery in Mumbai offers a solution to restore quality of life. At Synapse Spine, we specialize in providing expert surgical care for spine-related issues, including ACDF surgery, under the guidance of Dr. Abhishek Kulkarni, a renowned spine surgeon in Mumbai.
What is ACDF Surgery?
ACDF surgery involves the removal of a damaged disc from the cervical spine (neck region) and replacing it with a bone graft or implant. This procedure is typically performed through a small incision at the front of the neck, allowing the surgeon to remove the disc with minimal disruption to surrounding tissues. After the disc is removed, the vertebrae are fused together to stabilize the spine.
Minimally invasive technique for quicker recovery
Relieves nerve compression and chronic neck pain
Why Choose ACDF Surgery?
ACDF surgery is considered the gold standard for patients with severe cervical spine issues. Whether it's degenerative disc disease, herniated discs, or nerve compression, ACDF surgery in Mumbai offers a safe and effective treatment option. At Synapse Spine, we take a personalized approach to ensure each patient receives the best care tailored to their specific condition.

What to Expect During ACDF Surgery?
During the procedure, Dr. Abhishek Kulkarni will make a small incision in the front of the neck to access the spine. The damaged disc is removed, and a bone graft is inserted to promote fusion between the vertebrae. A titanium plate may also be used to provide additional support while the bones heal.
Performed under general anesthesia
Minimally invasive approach for reduced scarring and faster healing
Recovery After ACDF Surgery
Recovery from ACDF surgery generally takes a few weeks to a couple of months, depending on the patient’s overall health.
