Venezuelan security forces fired tear gas and rubber bullets Monday at protesters challenging the reelection victory claimed by President Nicolás Maduro but disputed by the opposition and questioned abroad.

Thousands of people flooded the streets of several neighborhoods of the capital, chanting "Freedom, freedom!" and "This government is going to fall!"

Some ripped Maduro campaign posters from street posts and burned them.

AFP observed members of the national guard firing tear gas and rubber bullets at protesters, some wearing motorbike helmets and bandannas tied over their faces for protection. Some responded by throwing rocks back.

Maduro, 61, attended a meeting Monday at which the National Electoral Council (CNE) certified his reelection to a third six-year term until 2031.

He dismissed international criticism and doubts about the result of Sunday's voting, claiming Venezuela was the target of an attempted "coup d'etat" of a "fascist and counter-revolutionary" nature.

But opposition leader Maria Corina Machado later told reporters that a review of voting records available so far clearly showed that the next president "will be Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia," who took her place on the ballot after she was barred by Maduro-aligned courts.

The records showed a "mathematically irreversible" lead for Gonzalez Urrutia, she said, with 6.27 million votes to only 2.75 million for Maduro.

The elections were held amid widespread fears of fraud by the government and a campaign tainted by accusations of political intimidation.

Pollsters had predicted a resounding victory for the opposition.

In the early hours of Monday, the CNE said Maduro had won 51.2 percent of votes cast compared to 44.2 percent for Gonzalez Urrutia.

The opposition cried foul, prompting Attorney General Tarek William Saab to link Machado to an alleged cyber "attack" seeking to "adulterate" the results.

'Another fraud' 

The outcome sparked concern and calls for a "transparent" process from the United Nations, United States, European Union and several countries in Latin America.

The CNE has not provided a detailed breakdown of the result.

Allies including China, Russia and Cuba congratulated Maduro.

Gonzalez Urrutia, a 74-year-old former diplomat, on Monday acknowledged the deep discontent in society with the CNE results and vowed that "we will fight for our liberty."

Machado assured Venezuelans that "the leaders of the world" are validating the results, and called families to turn out Tuesday for "popular assemblies" nationwide to show support for a peaceful transition of power.

Nine Latin American countries called in a joint statement Monday for a "complete review of the results with the presence of independent electoral observers."

The US-based Carter Center, one of a few organizations allowed to bring observers into Venezuela, urged the CNE to immediately publish detailed polling station-level results.

Brazil and Colombia also urged a review of the numbers while Chile's president said the outcome was "hard to believe."

Peru recalled its ambassador and Panama said it was suspending relations with Venezuela.

Caracas hit back Monday, saying it was withdrawing diplomatic staff from Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Panama, Peru, the Dominican Republic and Uruguay for "interventionist actions and statements."

'Bloodbath' warning 

Independent polls had predicted Sunday's vote would end 25 years of "Chavismo," the populist movement founded by Maduro's socialist predecessor and mentor, the late Hugo Chavez.

Maduro has been at the helm of the once-wealthy oil-rich country since 2013. The last decade has seen GDP drop by 80 percent, pushing more than seven million of its 30 million citizens to emigrate.

He is accused of locking up critics and harassing the opposition in a climate of rising authoritarianism.

In the run-up to the election, he had warned of a "bloodbath" if he lost.

Ballots were cast on machines that sent electronic votes directly to a centralized CNE database.

The machines printed out paper receipts that were placed in a container and counted by hand as a backup measure meant to be open to public scrutiny.

The opposition had deployed about 90,000 volunteer election monitors nationwide.

Economic misery 

Sunday's election was the product of a deal reached last year between the government and opposition.

That agreement led the United States to temporarily ease sanctions imposed after Maduro's 2018 reelection, rejected as a sham by dozens of Latin American and other countries.

Sanctions were snapped back after Maduro reneged on agreed conditions.

Venezuela boasts the world's largest oil reserves but has seen severely diminished production capacity in recent years.

Most Venezuelans live on just a few dollars a month, and endure biting shortages of electricity and fuel.

Economic misery in the South American nation has been a major source of migration pressure on the southern border of the United States, where immigration is a major presidential election issue.

Vance was an outspoken Trump critic during the 2016 presidential campaign, the same year Vance was promoting his memoir “Hillbilly Elegy.” He has since transformed into one of Trump’s staunchest MAGA allies over 18 months in the Senate, after winning a 2022 race for an open seat in red-trending Ohio. As a senator, Vance is known for his "America First" skepticism of U.S. involvement in global affairs like the war in Ukraine and his opposition to bipartisan deals on government funding. He has also helped lead a rail safety bill across party lines in the wake of last year's deadly train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio. And Vance has echoed Trump's attacks on the legitimacy of the 2020 election, which the ex-president has put front and center in his campaign as he continues to promote false claims that it was stolen from him. Unlike some other vice presidential prospects, Vance was not in Congress on Jan. 6, 2021, and didn’t vote on certifying President Joe Biden’s victory. An opponent of Ukraine aid and abortion rights

Vance has carved out a niche as a vocal opponent of aid to Ukraine, arguing that the U.S. should encourage a deal in which Ukraine cedes land to Russia in order to end the war. He has dismissed concerns that Vladimir Putin would continue his territorial march through Europe if he takes Ukraine. And while he has continued to express support for Israel, he has broadly stood against interventionist U.S. foreign policies.

“There’s still this fundamental inability to deal with the limits of American power in the 21st century,” Vance told NBC News in April, after the Senate passed $95 billion in Ukraine aid, adding that his colleagues — who have “have presided over the declining relative strength of this country” — should instead work to rebuild it. During his year-and-a-half in the Democratic-controlled Senate, Vance has led the introduction of 57 bills or resolutions, none of which have become law, according to the legislative tracking website Congress.gov. He has co-sponsored many more, just two of which have made it to President Joe Biden's desk. They would have undone Biden's consumer and environmental regulations. Biden vetoed both. Vance has co-sponsored symbolic resolutions that have been adopted by the chamber, including a resolution to celebrate the U.S. flag and the Pledge of Allegiance, and another resolution to honor the life of former first lady Rosalynn Carter. Vance has been a reliable vote with the right flank of the party against most of Biden’s legislative priorities, judicial nominees and bipartisan government funding deals that have been championed by Republican leaders in both chambers.

Like most Republicans, Vance has consistently voted against Democratic-led legislation to codify abortion rights, restore the protections of Roe v. (i gave my generic sunshine lucia’s job too (art student) & gave darlin my ivy reintegrating into shaw security agenda. i’ve held off on the others but i’m sure it won’t be long lmao; emery was a barista/retail jack-of-all trades, olly was a bartender, hazel works at vesta, aster is a librarian, & the others have their canon jobs but i made clover Specifically a translator.)

anyway but. jessa. she’s not full certified, she doesn’t want to work for the gov’t, she wants to be a professor/researcher. she specializes in illusion magic & has a minor in healing because wouldnt it be Morally Correct to learn to heal if you have that capability, but it’s not her passion. her passion is in illusions used for non-ward purposes like glamours & theater backdrops & etc, and on multi-sense illusions (so like a dreamscape in real life, essentially, which is Hypothetically Possible). to what extent does an illusion you can feel differ from actual shapeshifting? this kind of thing etc.

like i said already jessa teaches; she teaches some beginner illusory magic classes as well as a section of the intro course like lasko. she is friends with lasko actually; she finds him to be intelligent and kind and generally endearing; she has a lot of patience with him that she wouldn’t necessarily afford others in his position and in turn he finds her super cool but she intimidates the fuck out of him lmao

of course it isnt like it’s too difficult to intimidate lasko, but he has reason here. jessa can be Intense. she is autistic & she has a usually flat affect that can come across a little angry & she talks very carefully and precisely (if she doesn’t it all comes out very fast and jumbled, so if she’s talking about something she loves without pre-planning like she would for a lecture she’ll get all mixed up, or if she’s having an argument or something) and asks a Lot Of Questions so it can be kind of A Lot (lovingly) to talk to her if you dont know her well. she’s also a very thorough listener & has like a metal trap brain. if you told someone else a year ago your favorite dessert was mint ice cream while she was in the room and listening, she still knows that and will (think to) buy you it on your birthday

jessa and emery know each other as well, through lasko. emery took the same healing classes with her and so when emery is doing that Inadvisable classload involving advanced healing immediately, lasko asks her to help him and she does her best, acting as a study buddy & interventionist from time to time. her help really helped em get through that nightmare semester and they keep in touch with her afterwards too. they get coffee together a lot and jessa complains to him about the administration while emery plots to introduce her to damien

jessa is a good teacher, and it’s something she likes to do; this is one of the primary bonding points between her and avior, talking about their various students and about the ways in which their two teaching jobs are wildly different. he wants to introduce her to the demons he shepherded when they get out since she’s heard so much about them, even though jessa & eridanus will be an chaotic disaster of a relationship being the 20 questions machines they are. they are going to infodump back and forth for hours and he is going to sit there and watch them with heart eyes

Universal Newborn Screening for Congenital Heart Defects

Board-certified interventional cardiologist Gregory Sampognaro, MD, has treated patients in private practice and medical centers for nearly two decades. As a trained interventionist, Dr. Gregory Sampognaro focuses on screening and diagnosing congenital health defects in high-risk patients, including infants. About one percent of infants are born with a heart defect. About a quarter of these newborns will have defects so serious that they will require surgery before their first birthday. Since infants with severe heart defects can become seriously ill without treatment, it is critical that the condition be diagnosed as soon as possible. For this reason, the Secretary of Health and Human Services advises that all newborns undergo screening before being discharged from the hospital. As part of the screening process, a physician will measure the newborn’s oxygen saturation by using a neonatal pulse oximeter. Abnormally low blood oxygen levels can indicate the presence of a severe heart defect. Babies who fail the initial screening will be further examined by a cardiologist and possibly referred for an echocardiogram.
