Ceratostigma plumbaginoides, Dwarf Plumbago, is a low growing groundcover perennial with oval fresh green leaves that turn a striking bronze-red in fall, and these sweet little gentian blue flowers appear mid-summer to mid-fall. . . . #ceratostigma #ceratostigmaplumbaginoides #dwarfplumbago #plumbago #plumbagoflowers #blueflowers #gentianblue #perennials #perennial #perennialgarden #perennialgardening #perennialflowers #groundcover #groundcoverplants (at The Highlands) https://www.instagram.com/p/CUDubyjBjNW/?utm_medium=tumblr

There really aren’t many plants, especially hardy, species plants, with an orange as vibrant and pure as Calendula officinalis (Common Marigold). Today’s #oneadayplant . Maybe Berberis darwinii and Pilosella aurantiaca (Fox and Cubs). Either way, I should say, I generally don’t love orange as a colour, but in these three plants I think it is magnificent! . The purest colours have a majestic quality, often producing their own light. This is no exception. On a dull day, it will shine out like little lanterns. . Over the years, plants seem to have become shorter than they used to be. I don’t think it is because I am taller. I think it might be a consequence of deliberate seed selection, but rather than be 60-75cm tall (2’ - 21/2’) tall, they are commonly not more than 45cm (18”) tall. A pity. Still gorgeous though. . They are a ‘mostly’ hardy biennial (In truth, a short lived perennial) and are naturalised in Southern England, but grow happily anywhere in the UK. Their perennial nature is tested in colder and particularly wetter climates, where they may be better suited to being treated as an annual. . I love this plant. Sprinkle petals into salads. Watch the pollinating insects visit the flowers over a very long season - realistically from May to the first frosts. 🐝 🦋 . Bake in the sun and grow with grasses and bright blues (maybe Anchusa ‘Loddon Royalist’ or later in the season with Ceratostigma plumbaginoides. . #calendula #potmarigold #orange #berberisdarwinii #pilosellaaurantiaca #foxandcubs #calendulaofficinalis #anchusaloddonroyalist #ceratostigmaplumbaginoides #flowers #plants #plantingdesign #iplantsman #plantcombinations #colourcontrasts #complementarycolours #purecolours #orange #colour #colourtheory #bees #butterflies #pollinators #pollinatorfriendly #salads #edible #growyourown #gyo #slowfood #garden (at Crowborough, East Sussex) https://www.instagram.com/p/CCS5qYogAxK/?igshid=1wan6b7u4q5hk
